REGINA - Craig Dickenson has settled on a defensive co-ordinator.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach announced Friday that defensive back coach Jason Shivers has been promoted to the post. He replaces Chris Jones, who resigned as the club's vice-president of football operations, general manager, head coach and defensive co-ordinator to become an assistant coach with the NFL's Cleveland Browns.
"I have had the opportunity to work alongside Jason for several years now,'' Dickenson said in a statement. "He is a very intelligent coach and communicator.
"He earns the players respect and they feed off his energy and work ethic.''
Shivers is entering his fourth season with Saskatchewan.
"I look forward to continuing to work with this coaching staff and the talented group of players,'' Shivers said. "Saskatchewan is a great place to be a coach and I can't wait to get back to work.''
Shivers played defensive back in the CFL with Toronto (2007-09) and Hamilton (2010-11) before entering the coaching ranks with the Argonauts in 2013 before spending two seasons in Edmonton, winning a Grey Cup in 2015.

Took a long time. Are we running with 10 coaches now after complaining about only being allowed 11??? Expected they would name a DB coach to fill out staff at the same time. This long to name a DC who's right on your team & only interview a day or 2 ago? It's not like there were a lot of candidates available. So here we are a month after Jones left & we still haven't completed the coaching staff. At this rate, will we be making offers to free agents after they've already signed elsewhere. Looks like a lot of overthink going on here.

Good signing. Doubly good as Benevides wasn’t chosen.
I hope somehow McAdo can find a map showing him a way out of town.
His inability to stretch the opposing defense down the field was a huge stumbling block last year. Doubly sad when he had a mobile strong-armed gb in Bridge twiddling his thumbs.

The extra coaching spot is for a quarterback coach.

Anon 1 make zero sense. In 1 Month we have a new GM a new Head Coach and a new DC. To me that is full speed ahead. Its not like you name all 3 at the same time. One has to hire the next. Well done Riders!
I am super glad that we hire Jason as the DC as he knows the Chris Jones Defence better than anyone. We probably wont lose much of a step.
Also many F.A's are going to wait out the new CBA. So dont hold your breath on a lot of them.

Hey, anon #3, Steve Walsh is the qb coach. He may have been part of the reason our offence was so bad last year.
He does not know the CFL game, the NFL maybe.

Well, to my point, we need someone who knows the game ie, Kevin glen. Someone who played the game, after a year of coach, he might have a better handle on it, in year 2 they had Jackson, and Glenn and bridge did very well. Exit , coach Jackson, and the riders didn’t fair so well when Collaros was out, they didn’t seem to know what to do with bridge ( not like when jurious Jackson was coach. But who knows who the q.b.’s will be anyways? All the teams could look quite different this year.
