10 THINGS FOR FAMOSO NEAPOLITAN PIZZERIA

1 - FAST TIMES: The hysteria around the Saskatchewan Roughriders right now is a little hard to comprehend. At 1-2 and on a 2-game losing streak, it's not a positive hysteria. Why are people jumping off buildings and demanding Coach Chris Jones be fired so early in the season? Likely because so much more was expected, and because the Riders lost to previously-winless Montreal in Week 3. But so far in 2018, a lot of things have happened beyond the team's control. They are in "regroup" mode right now.

2 - MAYBERRY: I'm still trying to figure out why there's such an intense dislike for Chris Jones in the 306. Some say it's because he isn't "folksy" enough for them, and maybe they're miffed that he didn't come speak at their BBQ or sports dinner. The ironic thing is that Chris Jones is more folksy than Andy Griffith and Barney Fife put together. Unfortunately no one ever gets to see that side of him.

3 - THE WAY I SEE IT: Jones would rather spend those off-season weekends holding free agent camps across the USA rather than crisscross Saskatchewan, speaking at banquets in the dead of winter. (That's okay. I'm happy to do it). The problem for the Riders right now is that they aren't winning, so for the time being, Jones's M.O. has backfired. Honestly I thought this franchise was built to withstand the loss of the #1 QB and/or a rookie boundary corner. However without the services of Zach Collaros and Nick Marshall, the roof has collapsed. For now.

1881 Scarth St. Regina, 306-789-0011
4 - TWO WAYS: This is why we see Jones use so many players in all three facets of the game during training camp. He wants to see who has versatility in the event that the team is in a bind, like 1000-yard WR Duron Carter playing CB. And, as of Tuesday, Jones continued to defend his flamboyant superstar.

"Duron's only played 4 games at DB. He's not Superman," Jones snickered. "They talk bad about him when he gives up a play to a very, very good football player in both Ottawa (Diontae Spencer) and most recently Chris Williams. Those are good players. Anybody would struggle against those guys. (People) only question it simply because it's Duron."

I admire Jones' refusal to give up on people.

5 - THIS WEEK: The Riders only had two practices on this short week and one was a mild jog-through and the other was closed to the media and public. So we don't know who's lining up where or when. But if Carter is lost to the offense again, expect another steady diet of Naaman Roosevelt. The President was targeted 13 times last week, one shy of his career high. At least two of those targets - maybe three - went for interceptions.

6 - NUMBERS: CFL Game Notes for Week 4 had some delicious facts. The last time the Riders started 3 different QBs in 3 weeks was in the fall of 2014. They were Tino Sunseri, Seth Doege and Kerry Joseph. *shudder* That's why I'm scratching my head at the furor in the Rider Nation right now. We've been through MUCH worse than this 1-2 start over the years.

7 - MORE NOTES: RB Jerome Messam dressed, but didn't have a single carry last week and that hasn't happened since 2014 (59 games ago) ... KR/PR Christion Jones is on pace for 3,000 combined yards this year and the only other Rider to ever do that is Corey Holmes (aka C-Murder) ... K Brett Lauther leads the CFL with 8 FGs and has made his last 8 in a row.

8 - D-FENCE: The Roughriders' defense held Montreal to thirteen 2-and-outs last week which is by far the most by any CFL club over the past five years. Could it be there is a method to Defensive Coordinator Chris Jones' madness?

9 - MASSOLI OIL: The QB of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is a remarkable story. Having looked pedestrian for much of his CFL career, he has now thrown for 300+ yards in each of his last 8 games. One more will tie a CFL record held by Sam "The Rifle" Etcheverry and Kent Austin. The reason for his turnaround? "June Jones," says the Voice of the Ticats Marshall Ferguson, alluding to the Head Coach of the Tabbies.

10 - JUST NOTES: Run, don't walk, to the movie Uncle Drew at your local theatre. Kyrie Irving should get an Academy Award for his portrayal of a senior citizen hoops star. His supporting cast of Shaquille O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson et al had my jaw on the floor. Two thumbs up from the MMG. We'll probably go again ... God speed to new Humboldt Broncos Head Coach Nathan Oystrick of Regina. He's got a tough job up there. We are anxiously awaiting the announcement of his coaching staff ... World Cup. Can't get into it ... NHL Free Agent Frenzy. Can't get into it ... We have Gluten Free pizza crust at Famoso. Ask for it ... Go Riders!

Y'er welcome

It's part of your job description, you're paid to like Chris Jones. It's kind of like Ralph Goodale has to pretend he likes Justin Trudeau.

🤣 That’s good. 👍🏼

That is good. Still pissed of about the loss, but I won’t quit as a fan until the players do.....and that isn’t going to happen. Go Riders!

Some Rider Fans need to realize that for the most part the coaches believe in what they are doing, and not question every little aspect of the game. As fans we want to win,as coaches, you have to win, and they want to win more than we do as fans, their coaching lives depend on it.
People complain on CJ salary, well what do you think DD and Hufnagel, and whomever is VIP of Football Operation receive in salary. Chris Jones having all three jobs probably saves the Riders money.
Be a true Rider Fan and be positive.

Good thing they just came out of training camp when they had all that time to get their act together like real teams do.

How can you spin any positivity on this! We lost to a totally inept team and showed we were more inept than they were.
Our defense didn't stop them, they dropped passes etc, etc, etc
The off season training camps are a waste of time and money!. We are getting little if any good players. All we do is sign other teams rejects!
Duron has shown he is unable to cover receivers yet Jones sticks with him. Surly Murphy and O'Day can find a quality Corner back or are they also inept. Why are we saving Messam. We should be more concerned about winning and making the playoffs!
The crossover will be reversed if we don't start playing better

Year 3 of a rebuild and Jones still shuffling players in and out of his line-up. All those Florida mini-camps and him not finding a backup DB better than his star reciever, paying an injury prone QB that was awful last year and that has 3 concussiins 400k and you cant understand the hysteria? Gimme a break

SWC.... BAAAAAHAHAHAHA

IT SEEMS LIKE GM CJ DOES A LOT OF STRANGE THINGS THAT PEOPLE DON'T EXPECT... I THINK THAT MAKES IT EASIER TO CRITICIZE HIM...

SOME ARE EASY TO NOTICE... LIKE CUTTING PRODUCTIVE VETS IN FAVOUR OF CHEAPER UNPROVEN PPL... NOT TOO MANY TEAMS CUTTING THEIR 1000 YARD RECEIVERS. SOME PEOPLE VALUE HAVING SOME GREAT CHARACTER/LOCKER ROOM TYPE GUYS. JONES CLEARLY DOES NOT. AND THE MYSTERIOUS BELIEF THAT DURON IS THE BEST AVAILABLE DB.

INTERESTING BACKGROUND POINTS FROM THE POST GAME:... NOT BACKUP O LINEMEN... NO BACKUP DB?? WHAT?!

8 - MAYBE THAT IS A POSITIVE FOR THE D... BUT THEY MOSTLY HELD OFF THE LEAST EFFECTIVE OFFENCE IN THE LEAGUE (HOPEFULLY, I DON'T NEED TO SAY BESIDES OURS)... I WOULDN'T CELEBRATE THAT TOOO HARD.

THE OFFENCE HAS BEEN PRETTY LACKLUSTER THROUGHOUT THE JONES ERA... IS IT A LACK OF QB? LAST YEAR IT WASN'T LACK OF RECEIVERS... WE HAVE ALL KINDS OF RB'S... IT HAS SURPRISED ME FOR A WHILE NOW THAT MCADOO DOESN'T TAKE MORE HEAT... THERE SEEMS TO BE MINIMAL TAILORING OF THE OFFENCE TO FIT WITH OUR PPL.. AND NOT MUCH CREATIVITY.

WHY WOULD WE RUN THE LITTLE GUY UP THE MIDDLE AND THEN SEND MESSAM AROUND THE EDGE? WHY WOULD WE USE MESSAM? NO SENSE PULLING YOUR TRAILER WITH A BIG TRUCK WHEN YOU CAN INCH IT ALONG WITH AN ACCCORD.

JONES'S REFUSAL TO GIVE UP ON PEOPLE?... THIS SEEMS TO BE VERY STRONGLY CORRELATED WITH MONEY... HE SEEMS TO BUY INTO WHOEVER IS CHEAP... I.E. IF YOU ARE ENOUGH IN A PAIN IN THE @$$ THAT NO TEAM WILL SIGN YOU SO WE CAN GET YOU CHEAP, YOU WILL BE HIS NEW FAVOURITE DB.

SK IS A CRAZY PLACE... A COUPLE WINS AND JONES IS EVERYONE'S HERO AGAIN, BUT WHEN YOU DO STRANGE THINGS AND THEY DON'T WORK, IT IS EASIER TO ATTRACT CRITICISM. HERE'S HOPING WE CAN BE A DECENT TEAM THIS YEAR.

IF WE ARE GOING TO BE BRUTAL, I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD RATHER BE BRUTAL WITH PLAYERS THEY LIKE.

I strongly disagree with your comment "But so far in 2018, a lot of things have happened beyond the team's control"

Obviously Jones didnt foresee an injury to the #1 QB, but to have no back up plan for one DB going down is completely on Jones. What other team in the league would be putting their offensive superstar on defence because 1 DB went down? Our offence is sputtering at the moment and one of our best playmakers on offence is on the defensive side of the ball, and getting beat horribly. Our lack of Oline depth is also all on Jones. He had all offseason to rectify that. We constantly hear about how many scouts we have on the ground searching for players and holding mini camps to find talent yet here we are scrapping the the bottom of the barrel to fill holes. This kind of stuff should not be happening on year 3 of a rebuild its completey ridiculous. His drafting has been suspect, his cuts have been suspect, his roster management has been suspect. Keeping Messam off the field because he wants to keep him fresh later on the season? Really? IF this keeps up there will be nothing to play for later on in the season. It just doesnt make sense. Someone explain to me what hes thinking because nobody else seems to know.

I agree with you that Rider fans have not taken to Chris Jones & it doesn't help that we have just lost two in a row!

Are you rocked Rod? People are livid because he’s using a Star WR, the most important offensive player on the team, on defense. It’s an absolutley mind boggling decision. To make matters worse, Carter is getting lit up at DB. The fact the team has 10+ Dlineman signed, but only 7 total DBs is pathetic. Complete mismanagement. How do you not see this??

Joe said...

Serious question...what is the plan if a DB goes down against Hamilton? Or heaven forbid...TWO DBs! Congratulations Messam, you've earned yourself a position in the secondary.

There is no widespread dislike of Christ Jones Rod. Real fans love him. #InJonesWeTrust. He has restored professionalism and excellence to this team, and pride. We've gone from 3 wins to 10 wins in 2 years. We've gone from last to fourth. We made the playoffs and almost made the GC. I'm sure attendance is near an all time high. Merchandise sales were up almost 10% last year. WE LOVE CHRIS JONES!

What you're seeing in Regina is a classic example of fake news. It's a creation of certain prominent members of the Regina media and their old boy cronies behind the scenes, and a small group of people who are working social media for all they're worth right now. These campaigns always manage to draw in some people, of course. Remember the birther campaign? That was proof that no matter how dumb or clearly false the campaign is, if you repeat something enough times some people are going to start believing it and repeating it. When the same group here did the same thing to Roy Shivers in 2006 it caught people off guard and was surprising and confusing. This time it is neither.

This time is different in a number of key ways. Last time Shivers had built a team full of young studs. This time our team is much more balanced, and that has been a key reason for our rapid rise, btw. Also remember that a lot of players are on short term contracts now, and a lot of them came here specifically to play for Jones. If the old boys and their cronies do manage to get rid of Jones you can be sure that Montreal will snap him up in a heartbeat, and that many of our stars will follow him there, just like they followed him here from Edmonton. And many the older players will just retire or retire soon. In short, if we lose Jones this team will be heading back to the basement fast. No flunky, Tillmanesque, puppet GM could to what Jones has done. So, real football fans out there. Are you going to let this happen again? Or are you/we going to speak up this time?

I have thus far and will always support this team, and it will likely be until my very last day, but at the same time, one should not be naive or just blindly follow some vanilla message or trumped up spiel as what is or is not going on; without getting personal, and keeping in mind or in perspective that this is not life or death, and is sports, we are all entitled to an opinion. So, I will say that as much as the local media should also be boosters of the club, they must at times call a spade a spade, and not try to put lipstick on a pig as they say. The bottom line is that Chris Jones has conducted himself in such a manner that he has made some enemies, an example being his decisions to cut loyal veterans, which could be accepted easier if the results were there in the field. But, once again, there has been another slow start, and I am sorry, but would you see the New England Patriots put their best talent or most exciting member of the receiving core at DB? Of course not. This continuing a decision simply cannot be justified. In addition, you do not win with out a quality QB. With Collaros out, the Riders have seem to be caught flat footed and would have been better off with the tandem of Glenn and Bridge sharing games (and that is not saying too much). If the team is 9-9 this year, and do not make the playoffs or only get one playoff games, I would say that Chris Jones' position should be seriously questioned going forward (I know it is being debated now, but knee here reactions solve absolutely nothing and reasonable time must be given to a plan). Once there had been three fill years at the helm though, and unless there is continuous progress, it could be time to part ways and look elsewhere for leadership on the field and in the room as well as a talent recruiter.

Can see what all the fuss is about right now , what position were we in last year at this time and came a play or so away from going to the Grey Cup. Let the man do his job already he certainly doesnt tell or care how you do your job .
