10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR FAMOSO PIZZERIA

1 - BRING EM OUT: It's alarming, and even a little disturbing, that on CFL Draft Week the most talked-about thing in the 306 is Duron Carter's Tweet saying the Roughriders' Bring Em Out anthem is "tired and corny". Everyone seems to have an opinion on Duron's opinion yet no one can name one player expected to go in the first round of Thursday's Draft. My thoughts on Duron's Tweet? The Riders' entrance music is just fine.

2 - THE DRAFT: TSN's Duane Forde told a conference call on Tuesday that he expects Mark Chapman to be the #1 overall pick by Montreal Thursday night. To that, Scruffy responded "The guy who shot John Lennon?" Holy smokes. In my 20 years of covering this Draft very closely, it's never had a lower profile than it does right now.

3 - WHO'S AT FAULT?: Everyone wants to point the finger these days but it's hard in this case. The CFL has done nothing wrong. They market their own players well and it's not the CFL's responsibility to promote university players. It darn sure isn't TSN's fault. They've been televising the first few rounds of the Draft for years and will again this year. Can you blame the universities? It's difficult when they have no budget and their stands are empty. But it's time to turn this thing around.

4 - THE SOLUTION: TV rules the universe. So by hook or by crook U-Sport needs to get its football games on television and a network that's accessible (Access/Shaw). Why did we fall in love with Stampede Wrestling and its characters The Dynamite Kid, The Cuban Assasin, J.R. Foley and Ed Whalen back in the day? Because it was on TV every Saturday AND IT WASN'T EVEN LIVE! I first learned of the NLL because TSN carried the games decades ago. Meanwhile the NLL boasted 1-million viewers of the Champion's Cup Final last year on Twitter. Let's get with it. And then you fans need to watch.

5 - NOAH'S ARC: Aside from who the Riders pick on Thursday - they own the #5 overall pick - the thing I'm most interested to see is if or when Rams quarterback Noah Picton is selected. He was the MVP of Canadian university football just two years ago and could aptly be named "the Doug Flutie of U-Sport". The only knock on him is his size (he's listed at 5'9" while Flutie was measured at 5'8" and fashioned a great career). Noah, to me, is the story of this year's Draft from a Regina perspective.

6 - NEW YORK, NEW YORK: I'm not going to be around for the Draft anyway. I'll be following it on my Iphone as I'm headed to Manhattan for training from Hightower Associates. When I return, I'll be a trained Interventionist. Cris Carter already is. Don't know what that is? Watch the hit show Intervention on A&E. A huge thanks to my Recovery sponsors Fine Foods, Milk2Go Sport and CJ Evans Home Design for making this weekend possible. It's expensive, but I can't remember ever being so excited for anything like I am for this.

7 - MASONRY: Rider Radio CKRM's Michael Ball Tweeted that U of S Huskies QB Mason Nyhus - a Riffel Royals grad - has been invited to participate in Roughriders training camp as part of the CFL's Canadian QB development program. Mason's father is Perry Nyhus, the long-time CKRM drive time host. See you at camp Mase!

8 - SAVE A HORSE: Applause to the Swift Current Broncos for advancing to the WHL Final for the first time since 1993. Here's hoping they win the whole thing and end up in the Memorial Cup in three weeks in Regina. It's all positive vibes for the Broncos from here because the Saskatchewan WHL championship drought needs to end. And if the Brandt Centre is filled with Broncos fans for the M.C., so be it. The only question is: how good of a chance do they stand against Everett?

9 - HUMBOLDT STRONG: It's coming up on a month since the Humboldt Broncos crash but the devastation remains and will for a very, very long time. The Humboldt Strong T-shirts from 22 Fresh are now available in all Saskatchewan Co-ops and online from the 22 Fresh website. If you're wondering how else you can help the cause, this is a good way. ... You may also want to attend the Benefit Hockey Game in Regina for the Broncos' Adam Herold on Friday, May 11 at the Cooperators Arena. Adam's Pat Canadians teammates and Pat C's alumni will lace them up to raise funds for the Herold family and Adam's legacy.

10 - NOTES: Tuesday night's Winnipeg Jets 7-4 victory over Nashville was just like their season: up and down but mostly WILD. How can't you be pulling for the Jets to win the Stanley Cup if you're from neighbouring Saskatchewan? I am, but I know others are not. ... I'm winning lots of bets on the Vegas Golden Knights. Alas, they shall be my team and I won't worry about being called a hipster. ... The latest hot rumour is that the Seattle NHL owners are after Kelly McCrimmon as their GM. ... Another one: Alberta Golden Bears coach Serge Lajoie is expected to be the next Head Coach of the Saskatoon Blades. ... Join Mick McGeough, Jim McKenzie and me in Estevan on Thursday, May 10 for the Bruins annual Sports Dinner. I promise you, it'll be a riot! Call the Bruins office for tickets at 306-634-7730.

Y'er welcome,
RP

I hope the best for Picton but would be surprised if he is selected. At 5'8", 177 give a pound or two he's strictly training camp fodder. More likely he gets an invite somewhere but no team is likely to take him in the early rounds - wasted pick. Someone may take a flyer on him late. Outside of Glenn (backup) & Durant (backup), both 5'10", hard to find a QB under 6' & Glenn weighs in around 205, Durant around 215. Masoli isn't the tallest guy around in the league but weighs in over 220. Picton would get killed out there. Gotta be realistic, Rod. You may be seeing more USports QB's with tryouts but he's too small. When Lancaster played, your DE's were 210. Big David Fennell was a 250 lb DT. Different game today. ZERO chance he ever starts anywhere.

The TiCats are having a draft party in Hamilton so why are the Riders not having one. C'mon marketing dept. team up with the 4 Seasons and have one. I'll be watching it all on TSN. I really enjoy the coverage

Interesting take on TV, Rod. Kids these days get their fixes on different channels than your regular TV. NFL viewership is way down on TV but it's more popular than ever through social media etc.. My niece constantly tells me to cut the cable. We had dinner last night with a couple our age who watch Netflix & that's it. In fact, our friday morning coffee group all have Netflix although some of them also have cable. I gotta be honest. If it's a nice evening with the longer days & it's a choice between going to the stadium or shooting a round of golf with a couple of friends, the football game loses. You can say I'm not a true fan but rather out getting some sun & walking the course than plunked down in a crowded stadium watching a game. Doesn't make me less a fan - can catch it later. Unless of course, Rod, you believe the only TRUE fans have to be there. That would leave out most of Saskatchewan, right?

Then stream the games. Which they currently aren't doing either.

I still have trouble getting on the Jets bandwagon and I live in MB! Instead, I'd like to see Mike Fisher have one last chance.

I believe that the Bring em out intro was the best in 2013 year. The premix was not 6 different songs mixed together. 2016 was good two with the opening premix showing Taylor Field's historical pictures while it vamped up.

I can't remember the "This is our game" opening year, but it was my favorite CFL opening ever.

maybe I am getting old and don't have the short attention span for 3 sec clips of multiple songs. Pick a tune a live by it.

Honestly i think the players should have input in the intro tune.

I went and played golf after work and pvr'd the Jets game.

Still can’t believe Rod is cheering for a team that has Kelly McCrimmon on it.

Maybe need the Sports Cage out in Swift for the finals?

GO BRUINS!!!! Everyone seems to forget that Saskatchewan has a LOT of Bruins fans living here!

Rod. Canada West had 15 games on Telus,SaskTel and MTS last season using a traditional broadcast model.

Quite a few other games were available via the in house feeds on Max and to my knowledge all games are streamed on Canada West TV.

Is it really a problem that the CFL draft is not the over-hyped monstrosity that the NHL and NFL drafts have become?

Anonymous said...

I wonder if part of the issue about getting excited for the CFL draft has something to do with the larger number of Canadians being shown interest by the NFL? The team could pick the best player available and we may never see him on the field.

I'm a CFL fan and I really don't give a crap about the draft. Never watched it and quite likely never will. Probably 98% of CFL fans are in the same boat. This is not really something that needs to be corrected IMO.

People pay some attention to the NHL/NFL drafts because they're familiar with the names from WJHC hockey or NCAA football. CFL draft picks are almost all anonymous and are never 'stars' on draft day itself.

It's no big deal really. You can like the CFL without giving a crap about watching the draft.

Corny is the Saskatchewan way! Just be glad we are not Winnipegish. Bring em out!

Anonymous said...

Well then, move to Saskatchewan where you can cheer on the Riders and the Storm and will sleep better not worrying about the Jets and the Blum Bloomers.

Just looked at the Pats bantam draft picks for tomorrow……absolutely horrible management of assets.

I wonder if the lack of interest in the CFL draft is related to the number of good Canadian players seeking employment in the NFL? It's not easy getting excited about drafting a highly rated player that we may never see on the field.

I know it's a money thing but if TSN could televise a couple CIS football games per week that would be huge! Maybe make it a double header with a CFL game? I would also love to see the Vanier Cup included with Grey Cup in the host city. Play Vanier Saturday night and Grey Cup on Sunday. That would be an awesome weekend of Canadian football! Well anyways keep up the great work Roddy

Pulling for the Jet's!whaaaaat? I remember you saying earlier in the year "nothing about the Jet's excites me" and you bet lunch the leafs would go farther in the playoff's..That's ok Pedersen I alway's figured you were a little wishy washy, Just don't start cheering for the Bombers on their Grey Cup run or TSN will have to find you a Job in God's city.....:)...Benny & the Jets!

Mr.Underwood HA.. don't you think he's blessed enough?

The changes that the NFL is planning to make on kick-offs are worth a careful look by the CFL, especially the change that does not allow running starts for the team kicking off.

Anonymous said...

It's the prospects, they are not good enough. The players coming out of the CFL draft this last five years have been very unremarkable. Where have the Brent Johnson, Ben Cahoon, Andy Fantuz, type players been? There have also been very few good O-lineman to come out of the draft this last five years as well. If the CFL draft starts producing some good players, I'd care a bit more. Out of the almost 100 players that are drafted, maybe 2 will be good players at best in the CFL. The rest will be Shamori Williams caliber.

Every Rams game was on sask tel max in hd along with one other canwest game each week, but you seem to have some kind of alliance with Access.

The "Bring'em out" intro needs to go - so Taylor Field-ish

Pt #10. The more successful Vegas is the bigger joke the NHL becomes.

Dont mind the Bring em out but that wheat song at 3rd quarter has to go , Paint the world Green would be my choice or anything else for that matter

Vegas didn't happen by accident. The NHL finally allowed an expansion team to have a legitimate shot to ice a competitive team. .500 would have been nice and made for a good story. What a team does with the format given is another thing. They got George McPhee who in turn got Kelly McCrimmon. Dog crap franchises like Florida fires a guy like Gerard Gallant, and a class organization like Vegas hires him. This did not happen by accident, what happened was Vegas has shown in starts at the top with Foley and it filers on down. Teams like Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Florida, Dallas and about six others might want to take note on how to run a franchise. Toronto turns it around in 3 years with Shanahan and Lamourello - big shock that happened - not.

I enjoy watching Duron Carter it's just to bad he isn't going to be here long term because his act is getting very old.

The CFL can only dream about having an expansion team.
