COORS LIGHT RECAP: BRONCOS TAKE GAME 7

Ed Fonger/SCBroncos.com
SWIFT CURRENT - The Regina Pats fell 3-2 in a hotly contested Game 7 in Swift Current on Monday night and lost their first round series four games to three to the Broncos.

The Pats opened the scoring in the first when Cameron Hebig picked up his sixth of the post-season.
The Broncos responded with 8:46 left in the frame and it was 1-1 after 1.

In the second, Swift Current scored two straight to lead 3-1 but Robbie Holmes drew Regina to within a goal and it was 3-2 heading to the third.

In the final frame, the Pats outshot Swift Current 14-4 but could not find the tying goal and fell 3-2.

Regina outshot the Broncos 38-21, the powerplay went 0/1 and Regina did not have a penalty kill.

Sam Steel led the offence with two assists while Ryan Kubic made 18 saves.

The Broncos now advance to Round 2 and will play the winner of Moose Jaw-Prince Albert. Game 7 in that series goes Tuesday night at Mosaic Place.

The Pats will now wait 46 days before their next game, the opener of the 2018 Memorial Cup in Regina when the host team takes on the OHL champions on Friday, May 18.

Typical of the season. No want, drive or courage. The only two guys who went to the net tonight for the Pats scored. Skinner didn't have a tough save all night. 30 shots from the outside, and on the PP they didn't even get one through to the net. You are going to get beat up going to the net and it was obvious not many on the Pats wanted that. Weak defensive breakdowns cost two goals and one weak one bu Kubic. Does anyone actually think they will ever have a sniff against Sault St Marie? Poorly constructed team.

Broncos knees were sure shaking tonight!

Congrats to the Broncos...we scared you a little I am sure.

That was a great game...I thought more of this series would be that intense and exciting.

Not all bad as I think if Pats win they likely go all the way to the WHL Final, and are so tired they fall flat in the Memorial Cup, like Seattle last year.

Bring on the Warriors-Broncos series...hopefully Access will cover it too!!

Out in the 1st round shouldn't be in the memorial cup

Damn proud of the Pats for what they accomplished this season minus Wagner and Brooks. They definitely didn't play like a team that had an automatic berth in the Memorial Cup. It was a tall order going up against Swift Current and their three superstar centres. Windsor hosted and won the cup last year (and they too lost in 7 in the first round). Hopefully the Pats can continue that trend. If I can be allowed one negative, I don't understand why the WHL has to follow the NHL with every rule change (specifically on off-the-ice issues). This WHL season proves that the wildcard format is a sham and needs to change. The Pats worked their butts off to finish third and got a strong opponent in the playoffs while the Wheat Kings conveniently forgot how to play hockey the last two months of the season and have a cakewalk to the East Finals. But hey, no one in the WHL or NHL league offices care what I think, so I'll just happily look forward to May 18th when the Pats open the Memorial Cup against Sault Ste. Marie?

The pats are invited to a year wind up tournament but their season is over. A first round loss and whole lot of unanswered questions on why this season turned out so crappy. The Pats were disciplined last night so the question is why couldn't they have been all year and what a difference that would have made. You could see problems right out of the gate but management never reacted to it and that was a huge mistake. They waited too long to improve the team and sold the farm when they did. Now the the type and quality of moves shows big gaps. Average goaltending, no grit, and the size of the team was too small. In the two seasons just completed the HC/GM have provided very little in results compared to the talent that they began with and expectations. The reason this team exists is the work of Parker and Lang. Now they have nothing to show for it but a depleted prospect list and a loss of far too many draft picks. :Lean times ahead and nothing to show for it. We could have accomplished what just happened without selling the farm. Resources have been mishandled and frittered away. This is not an elite franchise. It's too bad the ownership group didn't look at the hockey operations people a little closer. A lot of fans feel they've been robbed and scammed. Time to re-evaluate the hockey people. They are not the best by a long shot. Huge mistakes and no results. After all they took over a an Eastern Division Pennant winning club and four years later, they're out in the first round. Success and growth…ya right.

ROD PEDERSEN TWICE VOTED CANADA'S NUMBER ONE SPORTS BLOG:

Tell me Rod how did you get that title with just Regina support? I know you won't publish this but think for a moment, you used to be the voice of the Raiders but are now exclusively "Regina sports"???

Another very flukey win for swift current in this series. This seemed to be the theme of the series: Pats badly outplay the Broncos but somehow swift current steals a win. See you at the Memorial Cup swift current... not likely! Go Pats Go!!!

A Regina Retail store has a Special on MATTRESSES today for all Patsy Fans so they can use them for "Crying Towels" !.

The Band Wagon's tires will go completely flat today after that LOSS last night . There should be some dandy quotes on here today like for instance Mr. Weppler's " Not all bad as I think if Pats win they likely go all the way to the WHL Final, ( Anon) and are so tired they fall flat in the Memorial Cup, like Seattle last year, and Another very flukey win for swift current in this series." Come on you guys they got beat by a better team , a team that was ahead of them all season long in the standings. Now with 46 days off until they play again, "Don't get your hopes up , it just ain't going to happen.

Voice of the Raiders...you're an idiot go back to hiding under your bridge ya loser troll. Pats played a hell of a series hats off to them, they proved they will be able to hold their own in the Memorial Cup.

Not a flukey win for Swift. They proved all year that they are a team to contend but had a let down towards the end of the season and not such a good first round. You can bet that will change .Happens to most teams one time or another . Good teams find a way to win when they have to and that is what Swift did . The Pats however are a team that was put together to try and contend . They did there best but hey who knows they are in the Memorial Cup and could win it all .

Out in the 1st round----shouldn't be in the Memorial CuP!!

Tell that to last year's Windsor Spitfires----the 2017 Memorial Cup champs after a 44 day absence.

Good on the Pats for taking the number 4 team in Canada to a game 7. But now the pats can practice for 7 weeks until memorial cup.

Always tough to lose a game 7. Broncos overall are the better team, good luck to them the rest of the way. As for the Pats, if they can play like that during the Memorial Cup they have a chance. As usual the playoff system can be part to blame to have 2 good teams play each other right away and one has to bow out while either the Tigers or Wheat Kings will advance. How hard is it to just have the top 8 teams in each conference advance. 1 plays 8 and so on, and if the bottom 4 teams win so be it.

Great series!!!

Congrats to Swift.

Nothing really to be said. Pats played awesome as did swift. I feel the Pats were the better team last night but it doesn’t matter.

Poor format where top teams square off in the first round but...... it is what it is

Paddock put a hell of a team together at the trade deadline. It's unfortunate they are out in round one but they just took one of the top ranked teams to seven games and could have won that series.
They have proven they deserve to be in the Memorial Cup and can make some noise.

Or Raiders....

The worst thing that ever happened to the Pats was being so good last year! Narrow minded people only cared about being mem cup hosts. the pats should have pushed all their chips in last year as that was the only realistic shot.

on the flip side if fans only cared about 2018 then they should have moved Brooks, Hobbs and Leedahl last year for more ammo this season.

Can't have it both ways!

Congrats to Swift Current and to the Pats for a hard-fought series! Taking the #4 team in Canada to 7 games speaks volumes of how well the Pats were playing and gelling after being patched together at the trade deadline.

I have confidence they will get healthy, practice hard and fit in nicely at the Memorial Cup.

It was a great centennial season and I'm proud to have witnessed it.

PS. Go Raiders. Please knock out Moose Jaw tonight!

GO PATS!!

Another season has ended and once again a whole bunch of unfulfilled expectations. One first round exit, Two second round exits a league final are the results. Hardly the stuff of champions. Soundly like the Parker era. It's a good thing they have a spot in the Memorial Cup because they sure weren't built to win their way there. The coaches and players were in a country club mentality all season. Players were undisciplined and the coaches let it happen. Weak play was tolerated because they had a spot in the big tournament. Nobody cares that it was close because it really wasn't. Swift Current played tough and didn't make many mistakes. or taken needless penalties. The Pats played undisciplined and made a horrid number of mistakes. Swift had numerous good scoring chances. The Pats had few. The Broncos were the far better team with far better coaching and management. That's the reason. The Pats were fortunate it got to seven games. Now they have to wait for year end tournament and go for pizza. Two wasted seasons and now on tot he hard times. Thanks so much. Brandon is poised to win the Central division after trading their two best players away. Their young goalie is playing lights out. Our veteran did not. Brandon could well meet the East division winner in the final. Never know after that! Stories from two different qualities of management. Winners and losers. Once again the Pats have shown what side they are on.

So many classless commenters on here who need to grow up a bit and remember that these are junior teams with mostly kids playing on them, enjoy the game and lighten up a bit

Your world is so pitiful. Are you the GM of your kid's soccer team or what?

You have an exceptional broadcast team for your Raiders up there in PA. I've listened to them... they're Very Good!! Have them do the same as Roddy did and start up a sports blog site. Sitting in the basement at Mom and Dad's place and bitching about it doesn't make any sense.

Didn't take long for this blog to drop to the bottom of the page. Pats must have been eliminated last night.

You don't mind our support getting you the number one sports blog in Canada...so it's an only Regina site now? The Pats, Media and fans show their typical arrogant selves that the Universe only exists to please them. Nothing better than to have Swift knock off the Rats.

Anonymous said...

Yeah they are not legitimate champions when they got to sit out 3 rounds of league playoffs and wait to play teams that battled and EARNED their way in.

Anonymous said...

Well guess what the mem cup needs a host every year, check. The Regina pats were the better team in round one but they lost to a very good swift team, check. I don't think the pats sold there future, after the trade deadline next year the pats will be back in the running the following year. Finally we were treated to good hockey for the second half of the season and playoffs. Can't wait for the mem cup go pats go.

Not at all. Join the bandwagon. It's a great sports blog site. Number 1 for good reason. Keeps thumbs active in basements all over CANADA!!

If you knew your facts you would know that the Pat's didn't know they would be hosting the Memorial Cup until after the trade deadline. So they had to try to plan for both scenerios.
