SPORTSNET: REGINA COULD HOST NHL OUTDOOR GAME

Earlier this year the WHL’s Regina Pats were forced to move scheduled outdoor games at Mosaic Stadium indoors because of poor ticket sales and weather.

The NHL was planning to send staff members to the contests, as the league is searching for Canadian venues to hold outdoor games, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman. He noted during Saturday night’s Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada that there’s still hope Regina could land an outdoor game.

“I do think Regina is one of the places the NHL is considering for a future outdoor game in Canada,” Friedman said.

Mosaic Stadium is home to the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and it opened in 2016.

Ottawa and New York have hosted outdoor games this season, while on Saturday night the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Washington Captials during an outdoor contest in Annapolis, Md.

So far next season the league has scheduled two more outdoor games. The next edition of the Winter Classic will happen on Jan. 1, 2019 with the Chicago Blackhawks taking on the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame. That will be followed by a Stadium Series game on Feb. 23, 2019 between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sask weather too unpredictable for this proposal. Also the Insurance liabilities would be through the roof, in this case, no roof.

Not to mention the fact people are too cheap in this town to put down the $150 to go.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to watch a pre season NHL game at ridiculous prices outside? Give your head a shake and don't accuse fans as being cheap when they are just being smart

WHL SASK teams round robin...all 5 teams in a mini tourney for the Sask Championship...(for instance)...
Doable?

Outdoor games have run their course. And who wants to see those God awful Leaf jerseys again ... ever!

Reginans don't want to pay for anything. They think all this stuff that comes here should be for free. Smart? NO! Cheap? YES!

How would they bring the teams in by sled. The airport in Regina isn't big enough for a helicopter so forget it. Such a DUMB, DUMB idea anyway.

Tickets for the outdoor game Saturday night started at 115 dollars. People here aren't going to pay that for the cheapest seats because they're cheap.

Name one current NHLer who actually played outdoor hockey. Time to give up on this fade.

Seems to be the worst possible place to watch a hockey game. Too far from the action, can't see the puck etc., not to mention sitting in the cold. Playing outdoors is great, being a spectator is not.

The nays have it. Nay to a NHL outdoor game Regina Mosaic.

Anonymous 1....that's the point of an outdoor game "no roof"

Beware NHL! The Regina folks snubbed the Pats ownership when they tried an outdoor game and you will get the same door shut in your face.
