Keith Hershmiller Photography
Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats fell 4-1 in Game 3 of their first round playoff series with Swift Current on Monday night at the Brandt Centre.

With the victory, the Broncos grabbed a 2-1 lead in the Best-of-7 Eastern Conference Quarterfinal.

The Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from Colby Sissons and Glenn Gawdin.

The game stayed that way until five minutes into the third when Tanner Nagel put home a rebound to make it 3-0 Swift Current.

Emil Oksanen got that goal back for the Pats, his first of the playoffs, but just 42 seconds after that Glenn Gawdin snapped home his second of the night to make it 4-1 and that was the final score.

Regina outshot Swift Current 40-24 in the loss. The powerplay was 0/5 and the penalty kill 4/5.

Ryan Kubic made 20 saves for the Pats, Stuart Skinner 39 for Swift Current.

Quick Hits
- Emil Oksanen scored his first career playoff goal in the defeat.
- Regina is now 17 for 20 on the penalty kill in the series.
- Jesse Gabrielle played in his first game of the series on Monday night.
- The game was a sellout at 6484.

Beautiful game

After Pas didn't score on that early PP where they had a lot of good scoring chances it seemed to take the intensity out of their game and the Regiment. Two "seeing eye" goals by the Broncos and it was all but over, with Skinner standing tall combined with no puck luck by Pats.

Not much body work for either Team tonight which made it look like a regular season game rather than a playoff game so fairly boring.

Pats need to get it in gear and start playing (hitting and scoring) like they want to extend their playoff season.

Get'r done on Wednesday boys!

I wonder how many minutes Steel and Mahura logged in that game? If the Broncos can somehow manage to get an early lead on Wednesday and once again force Paddock to double shift his star players for the entire game, I can't imagine they are going to have much gas left in the tank by Friday.

40 shots on goal and 35 from the outside. Absolutely nobody was willing to consistently go to the front of the net. The Broncos put everything low along the ice yet the Pats continue to try to shoot high into the goalie bread basket. The Pats best players have not shown up consistently in this series, not even close. The team assembled by Paddock isn't near good enough and he is being out-coached by Viveros. It's one thing to have a ton of talent made available by the work of former GM's. It's another thing to build something on your own and have the players buy in and pay the price the way Swift Current is. This thing is over in 5 games. The players and coaching staff are in the Hollywood mode knowing they have a spot already locked up and there is nothing to play for. Over in 5 no doubt.

Well it wasn't 5-1, but 4-1 is close.

SC D playing more physical than Regina D. Its as simple as that.

Anonymous said...

Broncos basically using 4 D, Don't you need to bang them all night, instead 4th line hardly plays!! What happened too the heavy game? Seattle style...

Pats don't care if they win or not, they've got a free ride to the Memorial cup.

pats will never win over the broncos by playing dump and chase hockey, why not carry it in and drive to the net, possibly forcing some penalties, instead of just shooting wildly fro all over.40 shots are no good if they are from poor angles and long dump shots. never going to beat skinner on those. cmon pats suck it up, hit somebody and outhustle the broncos.

Nobody who gets a free ride ever accomplishes anything. The free ride will deliver zero results. If they can't make the grade in the WHL playoffs, they won't do anything against the best in the country. Good teams with good coaches. The Pats played a great perimeter game last night. Maybe they should start sending two guys to the front of the net on PP's,. Regardless the country club attitude has set in and that was clear fro everyone to see. Paddock wouldn't play the bottom 6 because they are so bad. The top two lines played all night. Way to kill your stars. All the Broncos did was lay back and block shots and the Pats couldn't even do that. Lots of problem with the Pats personnel top to bottom. Poor job building this team. More pretenders than contenders from what they showed last night.

Mr Weppler, I disagree with your description of the Bronco's first two goals as being 'seeing eye' goals. If one of the Pat's dozens of shots from the point last night had bounced off three players and then found its way into the net, that would be a seeing eye goal. The first goal by Scissons was a one timer from pretty much the same place Hebig scored his second goal at the iPlex the other night - was Hebig's goal also 'seeing eye'? The second goal wasn't even a shot at all; Estephan waited and picked his passing lane before intentionally feeding it through that spot to Gawdin - no element of luck involved there. As for the lack of 'body work', that's what happens when Paddock has to put players on the ice who can actually play hockey as opposed to sending out players like Platt, Sidaway, and Mahovlich. Any guesses why those guys are even on the team?

I put my comment on here about an hour ago and still no show. WHY? I am not running anyone down, just a few comments on how I was run down yesterday with my Prediction on last night's game.......Limpton.

Morgan said...

The series should be 3-0 in favor of regina. Swift Current doesn't even belong in these playoffs. Flukey flukey flukey...

Rintin17 said...

Come on Morgan, they may out shoot the Broncos but their shots are garbage shots from the outside and in the crest of Skinner. Easy saves when no one gets in front and you shoot at the guts of the goalie. Many PP's last night and all they do is pass around and miss the net when they do shoot. Need to shoot low and get rebounds. Pats are done in Rd 1 rest up for the Mem cup.

Andrew Wiens said...

Rintin17, Morgan knows that; he just makes those kinds of outrageous statements to try and get a rise out of the Broncos fans he knows frequent this site. Just watch, he will respond to my post but not make any effort to try to grapple with yours.

Limpton, you should stop your whining and make a prediction about Wednesday's game with your name on the post. An actual prediction involves elements of risk and reward; your risk if you sign your name is that you might be wrong and the rest of us will be able to say nah, nah, nu, nah, nah to you the next day. Your reward is that you get to say the same thing to us the next day if we doubted you (plus the satisfaction of taking a risk and being right). If I were you I would make a prediction using a gmail account because it then makes extremely unlikely that someone else can make a prediction for you. For instance, maybe somebody wants to make you look bad so they affix your name to an anonymous post predicting the Broncos will win 9-0 tomorrow. If, on the other hand, you want to make me look bad you have to be able to figure out my gmail password, which I think is reasonably unlikely.

Limpton said...

Wiensie... I can see it bothers you that my Prediction was so close. You had mentioned that "NO ONE FROM SPEEDY CREEK WOULD MAKE A PREDICTION LIKE THAT" ! Well you are wrong again Buddy . Next time I will be right on and then you will Have to ask Mr. Weppler for more advice. lol

Windsor won the cup last year and didn't even win one game in first round last year! i t really doesn't matter if pats play well or not in this series lt only really matters what happens in may and Broncos we will see if you join us!

Pats are done like dinner and Broncos in 5 as I predicted 5 or 6 games. You do not win playoff series when you can only score 3 goals in 9 periods of hockey! Also top notch goaltending is everything which they didn't seem to learn from last year.

Anonymous said...

Pats WILL win this series. Book it. Swift current will never beat Pats in a 7 game series. Enjoy the victory!

The pats can and perhaps will prevail but they as a group have to sell out, particularly on defence. It's an area the coaching staff hasn't spent enough time on this year or last. A wasted year last year and heading towards another this year.

Here is part of a comment from Regan Bartel the Kelowna PBP guy……………

The Rockets have given up 14 goals in two games. While needing to play cleaner in their own zone, defending isn't purely the defencemen's responsibility. The forwards play a massive part in defending. If the forwards are going to cheat the zone and leave prematurely before puck possession is established, you are not playing for the better good of the team. I don't like it. "It is selfish hockey." You MUST defend first. "NHL coaches won't touch you with a 10 foot pole if you don't commit to defending". I will be watching that very closely in game three and won't be afraid to tell you on the radio who is committed and who is cheating.

Maybe the Pats should be paying attention because I think the Broncos are...

Limpton, I can see that you only pick and choose what you read in my posts. Why would it bother me that your 'prediction' was close when I have already stated previously that, as a Broncos fan, I would be very happy to be wrong about it? If I think the Broncos are going to be in a one goal game and they actually win by 3 - fantastic. Also, I see that you did a lot of loud talking in your last post but have still offered no prediction regarding the score of Wednesday's game. Why don't you put your money where your mouth is and tell me what the score of game 4 will be; if you get it right, kudos to you. You act so indignant that I haven't given your 5-1 'prediction' any respect, but if the Broncos had actually lost 2-1 to the Pats chances are we would not have heard a peep out of you since. As an ANONYMOUS 'prediction' you can just take credit for it when you are right (like you are trying to do now) and silently ignore it when you are wrong. By the way, why would I be ashamed to 'ask Mr Weppler for advice'. I might disagree with him on some things, but if he knows something that I don't (like the details of crease violations), I am quite happy to ask his opinion. Maybe reread the previous game thread and you will see what I mean.

Wiens, you should start your own Blog in Swift Current if that is really where you live. Some people can't get 2 words in here with you taking up all the space. Give us a break and have a rest.

Anonymous said...

Yes enough already Wiens. We have all had enough of your know it all comments. You come across as an arrogant know it all and life really must be boring in Swifty if you feel the need to post on here multiple times in a day. Go back to your seat behind the Broncos bench and give it a rest already!

Anyone who regulars this blog knows that you have the mindset of a bully and a dictator Andrew. You're opinion is factual in your demented mind and all others who you disagree with are idiots and morons and wrong. In my opinion, the pats dominated the first games in more than just shots. Physically as well. If you didn't see that then too bad I guess. Time to grow up.
