RIDERS ACQUIRE CHARLESTON HUGHES, V.A. GOES TO TICATS

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired international defensive lineman Charleston Hughes from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in exchange for international quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.

The Tiger-Cats had acquired Hughes from the Calgary Stampeders in an earlier transaction.

Hughes (6’1 – 246) is a veteran of 10 CFL seasons after originally joining the Stampeders in June, 2008.

Over the last ten seasons, Hughes has registered 412 defensive tackles, 99 quarterback sacks, 38 special-teams tackles and 23 forced fumbles. He’s also appeared in 11 career playoff games and four Grey Cup games.

In 2017, the 34-year-old Hughes registered 41 defensive tackles, 11 quarterback sacks, two tackles for loss and one forced fumble.

Hughes was named a CFL All-Star in 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017 while being named a West Division All-Star in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015-17.

He won Grey Cup championships while with the Stampeders in 2008 and 2014.

Adams was acquired by the Riders in August, 2017 and went on to dress for 11 games as a backup quarterback.

Hmmm...this comes with a price tag and one that won't get re-negotiated. Willie Jefferson not signed yet...how can they manage to give him big money.

Love this move !!! Hughes can still bring the HEAT

Good move. Hopefully Jefferson signs soon. We need help on the D line. AC Leonard not that good.

wonder if he will retire.

So much for trading to other division only to come back. Same thing with Willis. What's next? Collaros for Franklin?

Great move Mr. Jones! Defense wins championships!!

Very nice move by Jones. Adams wouldn't have played except in short yardage situations. We have 2 good QBs and 2 more for future. Absolutely nothing wrong here.

Charleston Hughes was the acchilles heel, thorn in the side all these years against the Roughriders on behalf of the Stampeders. Roughriders now have him on their side pending player, club management agreement. Kudos Chris Jones, John Murphy. Great move for the team 2018+!

Here's my prediction. He retire's by March, such is the rider way.

Adams sucks anyways. No idea why they brought him in last year. Figured he'd be cut in camp.

Ive been sayin Marquise Williams has what it takes to be the next one all along. Watch.

And I have not said that about one Rider backup since seeing Durant in the 08 preaseason.

on the face of it getting the name Hughes sounds good. But hes 34, and you didn't do well in the trading swap in terms of what you gave up for Adams and what Tillman gave up for Hughes. Plus Huf usually is right when he toasts you you are close to the end (see Lewis, Reynolds etc.) Id prefer they save the $ and sign Tommie Campbell or Ciante Evans. There are DE's out there like Victor Butler. 5+ years NFL too expensive to keep in the NFL that need a place to play. Im 50/50 on this

I thought Don M was smarter than that! What a maroon!

KINDA SEEMS LIKE JUNE JONES HAS BEEN LISTENING TO HIS BUDDY ETCH ON THIS ONE... WASNT IT HIM WHO TOUTED ADAMS AS THE BEST QB ON THE RIDER ROSTER LAST YEAR... WHOLE SAYING THAT HAMILTON WOULD BE WAAAY BETTET UNDER JUNE... WELL HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT JUNE

Is Hughes going to be willing to have his sack numbers drop because in the defensive scheme the riders run the d-ends are asked to do alot more things than just rush the qb, or will it be a Shawn Lemon/ Justin Capicotti situation where they didn't fit or didn't like the scheme and asked to moved?

Chick was 33, too expensive & too old. Jones declared he was building a young team for the future. So he goes out & gets a 34 year old DL, who is going to be dynamite & is not too old. Rider logic. In return, when Adams came that apparently was a steal but Jones never did anything with him. Now he has Collaros & Bridge on one year deals, ticked off Bridge, & in 2019 both can walk if they like. OR, knowing there is little on the roster at QB, demand a ransom for signing again. So this is a "great move". Of course it is - in the land of gophers everything he does turns to gold. What happened to that "young" team he was building? Take a look around at your roster on cfl.ca. You have 14 players 30 or over & 7 29 year olds turning 30 during the coming season. The Als, whom everyone calls old, have 22 players 30 or over & 1 29 year old turning 30. In other words, they only have 2 more players than the Riders in that bracket. Getting older all the time guys. It's Grey Cup or bust. Good luck, because if you don't make it this year, I don't like your chances going forward. This doesn't look like a rebuild. This looks like Taman all over again.

Happiest man on this trade. Derek Dennis!

He has one year on the contract and 35 this year...bravo lol.

Lewis Grant said...

Uh......

So we have Zach Collaros, he of the recent 0-12 record. We also have an increasingly disgruntled Brandon Bridge.

It's not inconceivable that both of them are gone by this time next year. Adams would have been good insurance. (Jim Popp, no dummy, paid a first-rounder to get Adams...surely he's got some potential.)

I think Hughes has still got it, so that's good. But for how long? And is he worth the money? And whose money does he take? Because we HAVE to re-sign Willie Jefferson - he's young, and Derek Taylor showed that he's likely the best D-lineman in the entire country.

Sure, there's a small chance this all works out - but there are a lot of red flags.

One of the best DL ever and the Riders now have him. What is the problem? Why not wait until the real season starts before condemning this trade? I for one love it !!

Anonymous said...

So much for building for 'sustained success'.

Anonymous said...

No news of having signed Campbell so they have no left tackle at this point.

Anonymous said...

If Hughes can keep healthy and in the type of great shape like NFL D-line stars 36 year old Cam Wake and 38 year old James Harrison, then this could be a good deal. Also, Hughes goes from a dump in McMahon Stadium to the luxurious Mosaic Stadium, bound to help him stay motivated.

Well said, Lewis. One of the few Rider fans that doesn't get carried away with blind devotion.

Anonymous said...

Talk about Hughes going from the penthouse in Calgary to the outhouse in riderville ,poor guy goes from first to 4th place within hours

I wouldn't take the criticism too seriously Don M. After hearing how great a DL, along with everything else we have, being the #1 Cup contender already from Rod, I pick up the Leader Post & find out we had a weak DL & the Riders made an emphatic statement with this move. What? Again? The same emphatic statement as when Collaros arrived? How many emphatic statements can one take? So, Rod, should Ambrose bring rhe Cup on his tour to Regina & place it in your trophy case? What happens if we don't win & our FA QB's leave next year? Of course that can't happen? We'd have Taman all over again. So much for that young team built for long term success. 21 players either 30 or over or turning 30 during the season & we're busy trading youth for guys nearing the end. Yup - an emphatic statement the rebuild is over & the Taman era is here again. Meanwhile in TO, Popp rebuilt a young club in one year. That was the hope with throwing the big bucks at CJ,wasn't it? I know Rider fans bought it as I heard at least 1 emphatic Grey Cup prediction when he arrived. So Don M., what you said.

Brad said...

Riders just resigned Jefferson!!!! Look out for that pass rush now!!

Brad said...

Lol, you can possibly be referring to McMahon as a penthouse, worst stadium in the league, and Hughes probably just got sick of bo Levi jus like everyone else

Oh boy, this and Willie Jefferson tweeting that he's staying a Rider Sat morning, what a D line the Riders have for 2018 #IsItMayYet ??

Anonymous said...

Those believing this is a bad move like Don M are probably eagerly awaiting another column of brilliance from Brandon Maguire or whatever his name is.

Oh man, Hughes and Jefferson on the ends! Watch out Darian in Winnipeg if you ever get to play.

Never mind age anon kids. Hughes has legend worthy numbers to back him up. And if you had watched him play last year you’d have noticed he is still a beast on the field. So happy he is now in green and white along with Collaros. Great job by the Murphy O’day and Jones.
