SCRUFFY'S THIS N' THAT

Welcome to Friday!  Here are the usual weekly thoughts running through my muddled mind, and as always they come in no particular order.

- You can't say the first week of 2018 was boring around here. Is it going to be like that for the rest of the year? If it is, sign me up!

- While there was optimism amongst those who cheer for the Rider green at the end of the season, that optimism seems to have increased with the acquisition of Zach Collaros. Anyone who wasn't calling for James Franklin was calling for Collaros, including me.

Collaros may have lost some or all of his confidence after the way things ended in Hamilton, but with the group he has to throw the ball to here and some good running backs, I can see him being the Collaros of old.  Does Chris Jones have a quarterback that can take him to the Grey Cup? We'll find out soon.

- What does it mean for the other QB's on the roster? I don't think it means anything.. I would fully expect Brandon Bridge to be the backup when the season starts with Vernon Adams Junior being number 3 and Marquise Williams continuing to learn.

Adams might be trade-bait and would likely garner the most value seeing he has more CFL experience.  As for Kevin Glenn, I don't think he was really surprised to see he no longer fits in the plans of the team. He probably knew that coming in because you knew the team wanted to get younger at QB.  He came in and had a season that exceeded the expectations of many.  He still has life in that 38 year old arm, and I would expect he has a home when the season starts.  Many think it would be ironic if he became an Eskimo so he could say he has played with all nine teams. With Franklin gone, would it surprise anyone to see Glenn end up in northern Alberta?

- Goodbye and thank you to Chris Getzlaf.  The popular Rider receiver called it a career Thursday with a very classy farewell address in which he addressed many including those who helped him along the way who are no longer with the organization.  One can only wonder how many games he played at Taylor Field starting in RMF and moving up to the Riders and one can only imagine what it must have been like for him on that magical November night when he hoisted the Grey Cup on that carpet he had played on for so many years.

During an appearance on 620 CKRM's Sportscage Thursday, I said to Getzlaf that there are kids playing minor football who want to be the next Chris Getzlaf.  I asked him who he wanted to be t when he started playing the game with his answer WAS Jason Clermont.  I only wonder if Mitch Picton grew up watching Getz wanting to be just like him.  He will likely get his chance.

- Speaking of class, how about Weston Dressler.  I had to do a double-take on Thursday to make sure that was him standing in the room beside some former teammates as Getzlaf said goodbye to the game.  I shouldn't have been surprised to see it, but the fact he plays for another team and was there did catch me off guard. However, once you remember the type of individual Dressler is, you shouldn't be surprised to see him do what he did.

- The NFL playoffs start this weekend.  I see Kansas City and Jacksonville winning in the AFC and I see New Orleans and Atlanta taking the NFC games.  The playoff experience and the hunger to get back for the Falcons will be enough to take out a very good Rams team, but a Rams team that could melt under the glare of the playoff heat.  When it comes to the Super Bowl, I am taking a Saints-Patriots matchup. Sorry Vikings fans!  Then again, maybe you should thank me.

- The Regina Pats are going to go back indoors. They scrapped the February outdoors game saying there were concerns about player safety and weather.  Fans were not happy with ticket prices, but should that really come as a surprise in Regina where everything is seemingly too expensive for some no matter the event.  While the Pats decide to make this move, I have to wonder how Hometown Hockey feels about it seeing they were coming here for the outdoor game, and I have to wonder what those on the Memorial Cup bid committee think knowing something the Pats said would happen in their bid package now isn't happening.  At the end of the day, I am sure Regina still would have won the bid outdoor game or not, and at the end of the day homecoming weekend will still be a huge success as will the Memorial Cup.

- Canada will play for gold tonight at the World Juniors. They are getting better and better as the tournament goes on. They clobbered the Czechs in the semis.  I don't know about you, but I am not disappointed to see them play Sweden. I'm not disappointed to see USA Hockey not get in the gold medal game at all.  They botched this tournament right from the get-go by sacrificing the integrity of the tournament for $$$$ by holding an outdoor game against a team they never should have been playing. Karma!

- Congratulations to Curtis Atkinson.  The former interim A-D at the U of R is now in charge of athletics at Thompson Rivers University.  Speaking of the U of R, its time for the Cougars to get back to work.  The basketball teams are home to Mount Royal tonight and tomorrow starting with the girls game at 6 each night.  Go down and check it out.

- Nazem Kadri ripped out part of Joe Thornton's beard? Did Joe even feel it? If so, OUCH!  Can you do that in the NHL? You can't pull hair, but is beard-pulling allowed?

- Have a great weekend!

"Fans were not happy with ticket prices, but should that really come as a surprise in Regina where everything is seemingly too expensive for some no matter the event." - Truest statement ever! Whine, whine, whine that's all some people know how to do...

Best statement on here--"Fans were not happy with ticket prices, but should that really come as a surprise in Regina where everything is seemingly too expensive for some no matter the event."

How true! People don't like the cost of going to a Pats game, a Riders game, they complain when a concert comes here because it costs too much.

Smokes and a 24 of Molsons are too much too, but does that stop you? Nope!

You hicks must think 20 bucks top should have been the cost for the outdoor game when you knew it would cost a lot just to get the rink installed.

Listening to Cattel on Sportscage makes me wonder how this ownership group became so successful. Very little thought went into the planning of this outdoor event. And only now did they have concerns about bad weather! The "it's not about making money" got a little tiring. Ticket price increases, elimination of senior and children pricing, elimination of the bring a friend tickets etc etc. They're business people its all about the money.

With the Pats it really was a question of style over substance. On the whole the hockey is much improved from the last regime. Having said that if a bid package is accepted and there are any changes then it should be revoked end of story. The team is .500 which is one thing and not the be all end all, but the other ancillary stuff changed the terms and they should lose it.

Know you were not a part of yesterday's show, but I am wondering if you had a chance to hear the appearance of Stacy Cattel. Could the Pats have someone who is more condescending and fake?

He actually tried to shovel it down our throats that there wasn't a backlash and there were positive comments about this move being made. Really? Who is he talking to? All you had to do was walk around the rink and hear what a failure this outdoor game was going to be because of the ticket prices.

Show some humility and admit you made a mistake on this. Don't tell me you looked at Buffalo and some other outdoor games and thought this could happen here. Did you think that wasn't the case when you first made the announcement? If Mr. Cattel thought he was fooling anyone with his interview, he would be wrong.

Scruffy, I have a New Years resolution for you. You host a call in show. As a courtesy to your callers and listeners please let your guests speak when they call in. You have a terrible habit of talking over people while they are trying to make a point. It’s incredibly irtitating. Listen to your last interview with Chris Jones as a latest example you talked over him for the first 20 seconds of the interview. You are the host, not the show. Thank you for your consideration, I would take this as a personal kindness on your part.

Cut Adams Jr., move Williams up to #3.

"Glenn knew they wanted to get younger at qb"...haha I hope they wanted to get younger than 39 years old.

Outdoor game was a Farce from the beginning. What if the temp got to plus 5 or 10 and they had to call the game because of the ice and say they sold 20,000 tickets and the temp dropped to 30 below and windy , what would they do then. Now they already have the nightmare of refunding the money to the sparse crowd of fans that purchased them. This is Saskatchewan or have you forgotten how unpredictable the weather could be here ? Also the crazy high ticket prices and you thought they would fill that stadium. Not in this life Baby, that just would not happen.

Why has no one taken the angle that Franklin was willing to wait until February to be a Roughrider? Was the Franklin signing a day after the Collaros trade just a coincidence?

Scrapping the outdoor game had nothing to do with weather (how do they know what it will be in February) or player safety (???) and everything to do with poor ticket sales and $$$ that QCSEG was going to lose - those comments in the press release were a laugher.

And no shame on Regina for failing to buy tickets. They were way too expensive for the entertainment value. I understand that those were the prices required to cover the costs, but the whole idea was doomed to fail given what you got for the price - tickets to see a junior hockey game and a bunch of old guys who used to play in the show.

Why don't your play-by-play folks in Edmonton follow Rod's example and set up a website and comment section for you guys so you don't have to troll in on Sasktachewan's best play-by-play guys site? Pretty sad when you think about it.

I also agree the outdoor game ticket prices were totally outrageous and knew it would be far from a sellout! I actually bought standing room tickets and was planning on sitting near center ice in one of the many empty seats! Also the memorial cup ticket prices are totally insane and I wont be buying into that event at those prices! Good luck with that one also QCSEG

For ALL those STILL thinking the end game is Toronto trading Franklin to Riders for Collaros, please read 3DownNation's article titled "QB James Franklin Says Riders Weren't On His Radar". Although Franklin is very polite about avoiding the issue he states "It is about going somewhere with an opportunity, a good place and being a good family environment". Harken back to Lalji's tweet Dec 3, essentially saying the fact Jones & Franklin were on the same team was not a positive in the Riders getting him. Think back that Jones denied putting in a trade offer for him. It's time to put the Franklin story to rest - for the last time, Franklin DOES NOT & DID NOT want to go to the Riders. Be happy with Collaros. He's a great QB. Not everyone wants to go to Regina. There's nothing wrong with that.

Anyone believing what Stacey Cattell had to say yesterday would be a fool for doing so. Is this the best the Pats can come up with?

Heyyyyyy, one of the Scruffy haters gave a name! YAYYYYYY!

Anonymous said...

What does an outdoor game in February have anything to do with memorial Cup??? laughable.

Anonymous said...

Just forget outdoor games. PERIOD

Outdoorfor Junior hockey is a tough sell. NHL has a different product and bigger populations to draw from.

Nothing to do with Memorial Cup.

Sorry Scruff...no Seahawks. The Steel might have something to say about your silly-ass prediction.

So who buys Molsons. This is Pilsner country!

Totally agree with you Scott Thompson. Scruffy, I think your favourite word is "I".

That guy for Pats Stacey Cattell was militant sounding, belittling to a bullying point to us common folk season ticket holders. I won't renew next year after hearing him on the sportscage.

It's been proven time and time again what a toxic environment Chris Jones has created with the riders. NO ONE wants to go there!
