RIDERS, COLLAROS AGREE TO NEW DEAL

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced international quarterback Zach Collaros has agreed to a new contract for the 2018 season.

The Riders recently acquired Collaros in a trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The 29-year-old University of Cincinnati product is a veteran of six CFL seasons. After spending his first two years with the Toronto Argonauts, Collaros signed with Hamilton in January, 2014 as a free agent.

Over the last four seasons with the Ti-Cats, Collaros has completed 930 of 1,396 passes (66.6%) for 11,342 yards and 66 touchdowns in starting 43 of 53 regular-season games. He also started two playoff games and the 2014 Grey Cup.

Collaros was named the Tiger-Cats’ nominee as Most Outstanding Player in 2014 and 2015.

He won his first career Grey Cup in 2012 as a backup quarterback with Toronto.

Good news, now we can get back to work. Big things coming to the green and white this year. Let's go

Why because you picked up happy feet?

Cant wait for the season to start now. We desperately needed a starting qb and should be able to compete in the west for a home playoff game!

Sounds like $460,000 guaranteed money , isn’t that a little overboard for jones’s Appetite ???
Could be wrong thoughts, just what I heard on radio.

Another fine job by Chris Jones. I can hear the gnashing of teeth in Edmonton.

This is great news.
Now let’s get Carter on the dotted line for more than one year.

1,2, 5 year deal ?? Not much info here.

Think Collaros fit into the magic Rider position salary or was that adjusted up a little. Better leave some money for o-line protection for Zach

Anonymous said...

As is usual for cfl no monies mentioned . What did he sign for and how much more than Glenn is his salary? So if you pay him more who takes the pay cut. Everything depends on salary cap and yet can't find out how much room each team has. What is big secret about payroll as other major leagues have team salaries published.

Interesting. If he does well, he can write his own ticket with a team of his choice next year, which may or may not be the Riders. There will be 3 out of the playoffs so I think It's a smart move on his part. Now there's 2 guys getting, potentially, starter's money. I'm sure Collaros will be the guy but a lot of money in QB's. Collaros always said he wanted to stay in the East. Makes me wonder how 2019 will play out.

Great job to the management team for pulling off both the trade and contract negotiation. Let’s get to work! Go Riders!

At 14 years of age my daughter just got interested in the riders this past year. She says she is going to talk to the riders to get her favourite player signed...Duran Carter....anyone know how that signing is going??

Congratulating Jones for a job well done is a bit over the top. First, they wanted at least a 2 year deal. Collaros can now walk after one & got $430,000 hard money with $225,000 up front. Since this is similar to Bridge with Brandon's based upon incentives, Bridge is not going to play much. Collaros isn't getting paid guaranteed money to ride the pines & the more Bridge plays the more likely QB costs go up because he may earn some incentives. Collaros has long stated he only wanted to play in the East. That could change. But if it doesn't, it may be bye bye Riders after a year. The better year he has, the more suitors come calling. As for Brandon, is he going to believe what he was told this year come next year? He has no legitimate chance at starting. That is pretty obvious even to him based upon his tweet earlier today. He knows he's been had. No matter what happens this year, next year management is going to have to convince at least one of them to sign a longer term deal. Collaros & Bridge will hold all the cards. So, you are congratulating management for what? Signing your QB & backup to $800K of salary? Rider Nation certainly doesn't set the bar high for Mr. Jones. You deserve better based upon the money he's making.

Haha...yeah so heart broken with Reilly at helm,Gable in the back and probably one if not the best receiving corps in the league even without Zylstra.

TSN reports 1 year deal at $430K guaranteed. Any truth Roddy?

Bridge will get to play ... in the event of an injury to Collaros ... similar to the situation with Mike Reilly, Matt Nichols, Ricky Ray, Bo Levi, and Trevor Harris.

Why would teeth be gnashing in Edmonton?? We could care less what happens with the Riders......We have the #1 ranked quarterback in Mike Reilly (and don't you forget that) and now we have a #1 backup in Kevin Glenn (and don't you forget that). We got nothing to worry about........our team is set for a Grey Cup run this year in our very own Commonwealth Stadium (just making sure you don't forget that). Chow!!

I thought Jones would never pay a QB $450,000 .... tired of losing I guess.

WHY WOULD TEETH BE GNASHING, you say you could care less about the riders. Yet here you are reading our blog. Chow right back at you!

"We could care less what happens with the Riders"

So says the people from other teams that continue to come here to troll.

Well I think since he’s injury prone now , his play has been below moderately successfull. In the last year I would judge from what I see. A lot of money for this which I thought was way over jones $ 200,000 max for quarterback.

Brandon Bridge will ask for a trade by mid season if not before the season. 430,000 for guy that tanked bad last season and this a great job done by Jones? Great philosophy Sask and to boot you just hurt the relationship of Sask with Bridge as he was a bright spot for you guys. You guys just signed your new Darian Durant...a tank job making big bucks...congrats.

Don’t kid yourself, I can see jones trading bridge now, I don’t think he’ll want a Canadian q.b.

Yeh but, Collaros is on a record setting pace. He's now lost 12 consecutive starts, lose 2 or 3 more and that CFL record will be untouchable.
Besides that Jones burned Bridge pardon the pun.

Can’t help but agree, and where is jones, no where to be found or seen.

Anonymous said...

Bridge will be better off somewhere else, you can just tell that jones doesn’t seem to favour bridge , it in his comments all the time, get out Brandon. The riders are good for creating news, but Toronto gets to win all the grey cups.

430k for Collaros? Jones is a moron.

That’s why you’re a perennial basement dweller (or close to it) in the West Division......and also why you’ve only got 4 grey cups in over 100 years in an 8 or 9 team league. CHOW!!!

$430K guaranteed is an absolute ripoff. When we traded for Collaros without having already renegotiated the contract, I wrote on this blog that it was madness, because now Collaros held all the cards in negotiations. To quote a former poster here, Y'er welcome.

How is Collaros any better than Drew Willy after he got benched in Winnipeg? We don't even know that he's any better than Kevin Glenn.

As for Bridge, yes, he does have some room for improvement. But will he get any chance to improve on the field now? What if we alienate Bridge, and then Collaros turns out to be a dud (I'd put the chances at at least 40%)? What then? Marvin Graves?

Ride fans always complain about other team's fans on their stories. Funny. Yet Rider fans were ALL OVER the Franklin items on 3DownNation. What does an item on an Eskimo player traded to the Argos have to do with the Riders? Outside of the fact Sunderland said he was never getting traded to Regina & Franklin said Riders were never on his radar. Yet on this blog there was still the secret plot that the Riders signed Collaros so the could trade him to Toronto for Franklin. If you don't want fans commenting on the Riders, don't comment on other teams.

Anonymous said...

I did find it strange that Franklin waited to sign with Argos until the day after the Collaros trade. Seems like Riders were the only other reason to wait until February?

Zylstra had that honour and there were others ahead of Carter also so you know.

Of course Franklin said the Riders were never on his radar. Before Franklin was traded to Toronto. NO TEAM was able to talk to Franklin or his Agent. He was owned lock stock and barrel to the EE. If anyone had approached his Agent they would have been fined. So Franklin had no idea who really wanted him. If Franklin would have said that there was great interest from Rider GM Chris Jones. That would have instantly been a Chris Jones fine for tampering.
Had Collaros not become available to Chris Jones then I’m pretty confident we all would have seen Franklin waiting for free agency to see if it would have driven up his stock value. Once Jones signed Collaros to which Jones had far more knowledge and game film. As Jones always states; it’s all different in there when the bullets are flying. It was a no brainer for Chris Jones to get Collaros as Jones played a big part in bringing Collaros to the league.
It still seems a little ironic that Franklin signed with TO only a few days after the Riders signing of Collaros. Maybe it’s just coincidental but we will never know.
What I am discouraged by is this contract that Jones and Oday have given to Collaros. It’s basically conceding that he is the starting QB for SK. I honestly wanted to see Zack win it out at camp.
I want to see the future of Brandon Bridge to be as bright as possible. In a SK uniform as well. I’m not sure what happened behind the scenes but what we all heard, saw and then heard again with the contract and then it’s outcome dosent jive with what Chris Jones had been saying. That was the starting QB has to compete and earn that position iat camp. At $460K. I sure hope $160K is all performance based incentive money.
Listen... I have no doubt that Zack will win out in camp. Bridge is good but he’s not quite there just yet. Brandon knows he has to stick to the script and stop over improvising on the called plays. Too many times Bridge gets happy feet and rolls out way too soon. To many times Brandon is throwing dangerous passes across his body. Attempting passes like that eventually get you into trouble. He just shouldn’t be doing that. Simply put, they are much to easy to pick off. Once Brandon can stick to the play book and execute those exact plays at a high level. He will become a real leader and a solid CFL all star QB.
When you read comments that suggest Brandon is playing high school style of football. That’s what they mean. That Brandon is making up the play after the snap instead of executing how the play is drawn up.
2018 is going to be fun. I enjoy all the Western teams talent and the passion of the fans. Except the ones that are just looking to negatively start something

Anonymous said...

Lewis your speculating at best. Truthfully
you have no idea if Brandon Bridge is upset. Your just posting your own ideas but they are seriously flawed my friend. They have no merit whatsoever. Simply self serving nonsense. All Brandin has said to Farnhan Larkin in a response tweet is that Brandon has learned a lot about Free Agency. Which is a positive thing. It’s a 1 year contract. Why would he ask for a trade? That makes no sense what so ever.
Brandon was not promised anything. Other than he will be given a chance to compete for the starting job. That will be the case. If Brandon truly beats out Collaros in camp. Then Bridge will be the starter. That’s not going to happen just yet.
Brandon is young and learning and has really good potential. He is not at the point to take over as the starter and be the leader of a team. Bridge is still learning how to execute. Too much of Brandon’s play right now is Brandon over reacting to pressure and prematurely moving the pocket or out right scrambling. That will change with time and experience. Once Brandon can run an offence by sticking to the play and the actual game plan... then he will become a starter
Brandon is not going to ask for a trade! SK and Chris Jones gave Brandiin another chance after he failed in Montreal.
Brandon is on a one year deal. Wake up people, Brandon Bridge has not proved he is a starting QB just yet. He is exactly where he should be. Neck and neck with an excellent QB in Collaros who is just going into his prime. 1st Bridge watched, listened and learned from Kevin Glen. No he will do the same with Zack Collaros. It is the perfect situation for Brandon Bridge to learn and become the best that he can be!!!

If any of you truthfully know anything about football. You would know that Zacks unsuccessful season was due to the system and Kent Austin in Hamilton. Everything there fell into place to negatively effect the QB position. No Offensive line what to speak of. Collaros was running for his life. It was just the wrong system for everyone. Both the Offence and Defence coordinators were different from the previous 2 years. Nothing was working and Kent was calling out the players publicly and Kent lost the locker room.
It was very recently pointed out on 3 Down Nation by a poster that calls himself Jeff Garcia’s Agent. That Zacks numbers after he returned from injury were excellent.... Collaros returned from his ACL injury week 8 in 2016, he produced the numbers following the remainder of the year: 10 Starts, 232-347 66.8%, 2938 yds, 18 TD, 8 INT, 100.8 passer rating. Over 18 games, that translates to 5288 yds, 32 TD, 14 INT. Those are MOP caliber numbers(look at Reilly’s numbers from this season).
When June Jones took over last season. They changed the horrible Oline. They ceremoniously gave away their best RB CJ Gable and Dend John Chick to the EE for a song and dance. They replaced Gable with a fancy dancer speedster RB that really fit June Jones offence. All of this was a real eye opener to the rest of the players. Then June Jones made speedy B a receiver instead of just a return man. Brandon Banks has over 1000 yards receiving the last 10 games. Jones had revamped Hamilton and gave Masolli good protection and speed inside and outside to work with.
No QB would have succeeded in the 1st 8 games on the 2017 Hamilton team. Not even Bo Mitchell. On the flip side, If Zack would have been given the same opportunity as Masoli did after June Jones switched everything up. Zack would have succeeded very well. Unfortunately Austin had all but given up on Zack because of Collaros’s contract was to become the #1 paid player in the league. Zack is good and will be great again. However he has to prove himself to everyone that he’s even worth the contract he has now. If he’s not Brandon Bridge will eventually take over.

Auggy Doggy

Teams will go after Collaros hard, just like they were with Kevin Glenn. Pressure, Pressure, Pressure. Can Zach handle it now after all the injuries and will he get frustrated like he did in Hamilton? We shall see. I'm skeptical on whether Zach can handle the pressure that will be thrown at him on and off the field. If you think Hamilton and Kent Austin are bad putting pressure to win, wait until you play in Saskatchewan.

I am really surprised riders paid $400000 plus for Collaros. Last year all the talk was that there position salary limits in order to achieve a
balance of team talent. And Collaros has looked really awful since his injury. Why is he worth so much money now?

But my faith in Jones was restored last year. The riders fielded an excellent team and were 20 seconds from a grey cup appearance. That was a hellova improvement from previous 2 years and fun to cheer again.

I remember watching Collaros in 2014 and 2015 and he was the best qb in the league. If he plays like that with the riders I will have my answer to the question of why so much money. That is what I am hoping for. Can’t wait for season to start!

Rider Woman Prider said...

I hear you Bart and I agree. The dollar amount is contrary to what Jones has been saying these past 2 years. Maybe it was more of a Chris Jones way to say that Durant wasn’t worth those kind of numbers. Now that my eyes have been opened I have to agree. But obviously there are QBs around that are worth that kind of money.
The comment before yours is hilarious. Dudes like that really need to read. Zack was playing behind the second worst Oline in the CFL first half of 2017. On every pass play the protection broke down and Zack was running for his life. 1st thing June Jones did was retool the complette O-line.
Zack proved in TO and Hamilton if he has a supporting cast around him. He will be dangerous to the competing defence. Zack can handle pressure as good as any QB and better than most. But NO QB can work in a scheme that has no protection and no running game. That was Hamilton first half 2017. That is not SK... the Riders have his supporting cast.
Look out for the Riders Zack Attack 2018. He’s going to be one bad ass to competing defences.

You can blame Kent Austin all you want for Zack's twelve games of bad ball but who was on the sidelines for all of the success Zack had...the same Kent Austin so what your saying is garbage and excuse for Zack. He simply was not good at any point and maybe Kent's schemes had part of it but Zach's play was bad, if your being picked and going incomplete that much It's not because your coach is bad...It's because you are(Zack) also. Zack has had a number of concussions and you can tell with his interviews...he had bad happy feet and threw very badly as I watched many of his games. He couldn't hit targets, threw many picks due to trying to make something out of nothing and looked plain uncomfortable with his happy feet. Austin was moved off the sidelines because Zack was his guy and that was going no where...Jones came in and did the right thing and put him as a back up...when Zack came in for June Jones he looked just as bad as he did with Austin last year. Excuses are never good but.

The Riders results last year were moderately successful.

That's all fine but the Rider's O line was not good last year. Only Montreal and B.C. had a worse O line then the Riders last year. With the money being paid to Collaros and Bridge, how much money is left to improve the O line? Keep in mind that they have not yet signed Campbell, their left tackle. If they do sign him, he has a two game suspension to serve.
Last year, Jones said he had to save money on a QB so that he could get a better O line. So this year, he will try to save money on the O line because he paid too much to his quarterbacks? Sounds like a vicious circle to me. Conflicting stories from one year to the next. Is he that desperate or actually changes his philosophy every year?

3rd & 1, spin it however you want. Saying the Riders were never on his radar has nothing to do with teams being unable to negotiate with him. I'm looking for a new job but Google isn't on my radar. That implies that other companies ARE as I am thinking about future employers. Rider fans were still giddy about Franklin even after he signed with Toronto & paid no attention to Farhan Lalji's tweet Dec 3 which basically said the relationship he had with Jones was a detriment. Further proof - read Franklin's comments on cfl.ca where he goes back to an incident during the Labour Day game in Calgary where a coach, still with the Riders, pulled him off the field & berated him, something reported in the Edmonton media the next day. This still bothers him to this day. Lastly, he signed early for less money so DUH! Not just me, but many reported on this blog that once he was traded to TO he was going to sign there. Durant was traded & signed weeks before becoming a free agent last year. Reilly was traded & signed Jan 31, days before free agency. BC traded Adams to the Als - signed. How did the Collaros trade have anything to do with it? 1) Mtl would drive up his value 2) Collaros JUST signed this week. Franklin could have waited to Feb 2, if he wanted to, & see if the Riders paid Collaros' bonus & kept him or if they released him. Why sign before Feb 2? There was no rush & you'd have a Rider team under pressure to sign somebody or look like dummies for giving up a #10. Frankin WANTED to sign with Toronto. All your theories are nonsense just like Jones brought Franklin to the league (sorry, he was on Esks neg list before Jones was hired). He brought Collaros to the CFL. Since Collaros & Jones both arrived in TO for the 2012 season I'm pretty sure Collaros was on the neg list before Jones got there. Jones get's way too much credit. The GM's decide who ultimately comes to camp with some input from coaches, not the assistant coaches. Jones is a defense guy & that's where his input would come from. Who they should bring in on offence is the privy of the HC & OC. Believe it or not, there are certain boundaries within the coaching group so, no, don't buy that line just to pump Jones' tires.

Anonymous said...

The O line was re-tooled...that's funny because 4 of the O-line show 18 games played and 4 with part season played which means most of the year they had the same O-line...Tony Washington was the only upgrade and he struggled at the start after being traded. Zach was bad because he can't scramble and seems to shuffle his feet in the same spot in the pocket which leaves him making bad decisions, bad throws and being sacked. Masoli was on the run enough but he was smart enough to realize when to ditch the ball, take the ball himself or throw on the run and he was damn good at it which left Collaros a deserved 2nd best.

Would some genius please explain to me how a defensive coach (Chris Jones) played a big part in bringing a rookie to the offense (namely quarterback Zack Collarus)
On second thought, don't bother explaining it because it's BS and 3rd and one lost all credibility.

Last Anon the facts are no one really knows if Jones was seriously considering Franklin or not. All I did was suggest a different view point. If Jones was interested in Franklin and was willing to pay him healthy and some how Franklin was informed of that. Do you not think Franklin would have at least tried free Agency. I would think he probably would have.
So many people think the know the answers to things. Then there’s the Trolls that come on are forcibly rude in stating they know. When again know one really knows. Everyone is simply stating a point of view. Some people take things way to seriously. and both look and sound like jack asses. Like the old saying goes. Opinions are like azxholes. Everybody has one.

I’m reading above that June Jones retooled the Oline. I don’t read where anyone states June Jones replaced the Oline with other players. I think some people must think the word retool means replace.
I do remember reading a few articles on how June Jones run and shoot allowed the QB along with the Oline and the RB to work much better in unison to avoid the heavy pressure the QB faced the first 8 games.
If some people don’t think that June Jones made the difference when he stepped in and it was simply the play of Masolli. That’s not very smart.
You know I’m not even sure why I just wrote this. As any social media sports blogs these days are nothing but a bunch of competitive hate. With one person reading one article and another person reading a different article and then the hate just goes back and forth.

Collaros had Jones bent over backwards. If he didn't pay him 430,000 he could just wait till free agency where I'm sure the Als would have paid him. No money for Carter now.
