RIDERS ACQUIRE ZACH COLLAROS
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats sent quarterback Zach Collaros to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Wednesday for a second-round draft choice, shedding salary and adding to their stockpile of draft picks.
The trade comes amid a report Hamilton is close to re-signing quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who made 10 starts last season and saw action in every game. The Ticats also have former NCAA star Johnny Manziel on their negotiation list, with a green light from the CFL to sign him.
Saskatchewan gave up the 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft to get Collaros, a former Ticat starter who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in September 2015.
The Riders acquired the pick in the deal that sent quarterback Darian Durant to Montreal.
The Tiger-Cats now hold the second, 10th, 11th and 15th overall selections in the 2018 CFL draft. Hamilton has nine picks in all in the May 3 draft.
For Saskatchewan, Collaros joins a quarterbacking corps that includes Canadian Brandon Bridge and veteran Kevin Glenn.
The 29-year-old Collaros started eight games in 2017, completing 167 of 266 passes for 1,767 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
In 59 career CFL games with Toronto and Hamilton, the six-foot 219-pounder has thrown for 13,759 yards and 83 touchdowns. Collaros was the Tiger-Cats' nominee for Most Outstanding Player in 2014 and 2015.
"I am happy for Zach to land on his feet with on Wednesday a chance to be on a good team that can compete for a championship, and not a rebuilding situation,'' Hamilton coach June Jones said in a statement.
"As I said during the season, Zach was put into a difficult situation, as was I, and he handled himself as a true pro. He came to work every day and tried to be the best he could be. Zach was an asset to me and our team in the areas he could control. There is no question in my mind had he gotten his chance again to play for me, he would have been successful.
"I saw enough in practice and witnessed his work ethic to know he is a tough kid and a winner. As I told him, this is a business. Zach understands the game, and the business. I wish him all the best and so does everyone in our organization.''
As for Manziel, the CFL announced in late December that it would approve a contract for the controversial QB if one was negotiated.
"We appreciate the CFL office and commissioner Randy Ambrosie's due diligence in this matter,'' the Ticats said at the time. "We also recognize Johnny Manziel for thus far demonstrating the attributes necessary to continue his career in our great league. We will have no further comment at this time.''
The 25-year-old was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy while at Texas A&M but failed to impress in the NFL with Cleveland as stories about his off-field activities overshadowed his play.
Hamilton finished out of the playoffs last season at 6-12-0. Saskatchewan (10-8-0) lost 25-21 to Toronto in the Eastern final after crossing over and beating Ottawa in the semifinal.
The Riders finished fifth in passing yards (5,416) during the 2017 regular season but lead the league in passing TDs (35).

What an awful trade...the fact that you gave up any assets for a contract that is this terrible is insulting to the fanbase. Hamilton was going to have to cut him to make room for Manziel.
And now you're stuck with that contract on the cap. Not to mention how poorly he's played in his last 10 starts.
- Angry Fan in Flin Flon
I'm sure Brandon Bridge is REALLY happy he signed that contract extension now.
I'll pump your tires a bit here Roddy, you predicted a few weeks ago you thought that Collaros would end up being the Riders starting QB in 2018, while he hasn't won the starting job yet, this is a pretty big step in that direction.
Nice acquisition. Collaros needed a change from Hamilton and he appears to be healthy. If we can provide consistent o line protection Collaros won't disappoint. Will be interesting to see if salary negotiations are friendly, because Jones won't pay his current wage. Very good QB, regardless. Now - does Kevin Glenn stay in Riderville?
Be interested to see the huge pay-cut he took to sign...because Jones won't pay near what he made in Hamilton.
Just when I was liking Jones, he pulls this garbage of a trade. I hope Bridge proves all wrong and earns the starting job.
You keep him upright and healthy - with that O-Line, Receiving Corps and Trent Richardson as RB. The Roughriders just won the West Division, home playoff game and are booked for the Grey Cup.
Hall of Famer Kevin Glenn just got replaced yet again.
Real Flin Flon. Collaros will undoubtedly restructure his contract. Chill dude this is a positive move and Jones is too smart to pay whay Hamilton was paying
Mr. Collaros has never proven that he is a starting QB. This is going to be interesting in 2018!
Wait....wasn't Vince Young announced last January? I am starting to notice a trend here.....
IMAGIRL
Glenn will probably hang around as a QB Coach or something like that . I don't think we will see him as a starter or even a back up anymore. He might ask for a trade that is if anyone wants him.
Now do they flip him to Toronto?
yes i agree dont think for a second he will continue to receive his slated salary.
he was traded for the draft pick we got for darian id say low risk
he is not a free agent so we have until roster day to restructure or trade or release
lots of time to see what he has and go from there
Glenn will become a QB i would assume (yes i know what that spells) or be traded to a team for a mentor-ship back up role
i believe as our QB situation no one is a real definite starter i am all for a qb battle in training camp
Never proven he was a starter? Wasn't he an All star and mop candidate before injuries derailed him in like 2014 2015
I can't believe the amount of bitchers on this blog. You complain because we don't have a starting QB, you bitch because Bridge is only good as a back-up, you bitch because we don't trade for a starting QB. Jones is making all the positive moves and you still BITCH. Chill out and see what happens to an underachieving QB with good coaching. NUFF SAID
Collaros looked lousy and uncoachabe last year. Could be a tire fire
Bart
Glenn to Edmonton. They need a backup now and they are hosting the Grey Cup. Then Glenn will have played for every team in the CFL. Atlantic Schooners in 2020?
Thai is great news. Chris Jones continues to make the Riders better.
And for those of u worried about Bridge. If a professional athlete dosent want to compete for a job he should go work at WalMart. This should only make Bridge better. Successful teams In the CFL have two starting caliber QB's.
Getting Collaros is ok, at least the KG experiment is over. That one never ends well. Think the 10th overall was too high a price though. Jones best canadians are older he needs some good drafts. Hard to win having Dyakowski block Micah Johnson and Sewell.
Great pick up, I guess I’m alone with this thought?
People in Sask wouldn't be happy unless God himself was our quarterback. Sheesh
One of the BEST moves to date by Jones. The moron trolls can go to hell. Just stupid people.
You can never have too much depth at QB. If Bridge was to assume starters position and fail by five games in the mob would be calling for Jones head….again. Kevin Glenn is a trooper but he has never won the big prizes when it counted….never. So who would we have had? No experienced QB that's what.
They have no doubt already discussed his contract and that will be taken care of. Hamilton will run with the Manziel thing…good luck with that.
We just got one of the best starters in the CFL and people actually want to bitch? Unbelievable! For the first time in a while we have a real strong QB situation with lots of depth. You know the the thing we've been bitching about and envying other teams that did. Time to give it a rest.
This is an incredibly good trade for an excellent QB. Collaras and Bridge give the Riders championship caliber talent at the position. If the O-line plays great then the future looks bright and hopefully we won't have to hear Rod bark out "Down Goes Collaros" on too many occasions.
As our good friend Arash has pointed out, the draft pick traded for Collaros was the one picked up from Montreal for Durant last year, so it looks like a trade of the aging Durant for a younger starter in Collaros.
Another worn out horse, no one else wants, in the stable. Just the way the Riders like 'em.
Quite a contrast in the statement June Jones made after this trade compared to what Chris Jones said after dumping Darian Durant.
Moderate Success
Collaros is important as it provides the Riders with a QB that can put the Riders closer to the other Western teams at that position, all who have very good and experienced QB's. Perhaps a run for 1st place or a home play-off is now a real possibility. Go Riders!
If he's afraid of competition then he's not going to last.
Why is this a garbage trade?
Just the facts folks. Not bitching. Hope to see the Collaros of 2014 and 2015. Not the one I watched early last year who was benched for half the season. Happy to see him in green and white. Good competition for Bridge.
Bart
Absolutely astute comments. Finally, some logic.
Whoa whoa whoa... there's no room for that kind of level-headed logical thinking on this thread. Don't you know that in order to post on here it has to be the worst possible thing Jones is a moron and Collaros is a bum? There's absolutely no place for Common Sense on here.
Good trade. We need a veteran here as Glenn is aging fast. If O line stays healthy and with all our good receivers we should be ok. Tiger cats had a lot of injuries at receiver last year. He should fit in very well with our offence.
Where can a person find out cfl salaries by team. Spotrac has the 4 major leagues salary by player and team. Where do we find cfl surely not by listening to informed media. I am wondering where the extra 250,000 comes from difference of Zac contract and Glenn.
Could this be a set up for another trade, this time with the Argos? Collaros for Franklin? Hamilton won't trade with Toronto and Edmonton won't trade with Saskatchewan. Both teams get the QB they want. Ray and Glenn retire.
Could happen.
Either way, I'm happy with the QB situation in Riderville. Well done team.
You don't know much football do you buddy?
Huh! Never proven that he's a starting QB?
I'm not sure what football league you've been watching then.
I'm noticing a trend as well and that's our staff looking where ever possible to find a quality QB. Thank gòd for that.
Vince Young cost them nothing more than a plane ticket. It didn't work out but if it did...bonus.
Let the football people make the football decisions.
This could not have been said much better.
I swear we complain and are negative just for the sake of it in this province.
No I'd say your in the majority.
People that are negative and complain tend to be the ones doing the most complaining on message boards etc.
People that are happy wont run around posting on message boards.
Try and get honest reviews for things online sometimes. Satisfied customers don't always write reviews.
God did play for the Roughriders once upon a time. If only "The Sask. Football God Mr. Kent Austin" could turn back time and come back to qb the Roughriders. On second thought... he probably could come back as a player and win a GC or two. Grey Cups galore guaranteed at his age, happy Riderville.
Collaros hasn't signed anything. His contract is good for another year. The Riders are obligated to take over his present contract unless they can convince him to renegotiate. Collaros has said that he will not renegotiate. But then again , he also said that he wants to stay in the east. It will be interesting.
to Tinhead 296:
What gives you the idea that veteran QB KG is "aging fast"?? He ages at the same rate all the rest of us do?? 1 us minute = 1 KG minute, 1 us hour = 1 KG hour......yada yada yada
Glenn will not become an Eskimo...they have Zach Kline and Eli Jenkins for the future coming, no reason to have Kevin Glenn in the Green and Gold. They aren't signing him just so he can say he played on all teams either so give it up.
Calling people trolls and stupid because they don't like the trade seems foolish on your part bud...the way Collaros played last year was horrid and unless his contract gets restructured to pay him for how he played because paying big bucks for that return will leave you where Hamilton was after the first part. He simply was the reason they never made play-offs period...and yes it was all on him and Masoli proved it.
CM... look at it like this. Chris Jones just traded the draft pick he got for Darrian Durant. So basically we traded Durant for Collaros with a Seadon in between.
Of course Collaros will have his contract restructured, its happening right now as we speak you buffoon! Do you think for one moment Mr. Chris Jones makes a trade without doing his due diligence, he's not Taman making a trade for the sake of making a trade! Saskatchewan now has a bonafide qb. As for Bridge, he's off to Toronto for the playing rights to Franklin. Roughriders in good shape moving forward with what they have (Adams, Glenn, Williams) plus training camp invites.
Sorry you are 100% wrong. If Kent Austin would have remained as the HC. You could have put Bo Levi Mitchell in there and they would have continued to lose. It was the system that failed. Losing 60-0 to Calgary had nothing to do with the QB position.
Read up on June Jones before you make self serving comments. A complete system change is what saved the Cats. June put in Masoli to change the look. Not because he didn’t believe in Collaros.
Why do so many of you fricken people feel you know more than the people who get paid to do this.
Everything about this is positive. We traded the draft pick from Durant for Collaros. Zack will most likely restructure his contract and we have Bridge and Collaros competing for the starting job.
I remember how many people bitched when we signed Brandin Bridge as another cast off.
The anti-Collaros troll should fess up to the fact that he is an Edmonton Eskimo fan habitually posting multiple comments here today om this thread, still upset to be stuck with Jason Maas and freaking out again that Jones is doing some good things in Riderville - heading towards excellence, away from mediocrity.
Agree Glenn isn"t a good fit for Edmonton. Why do Rider fans think everyone is interested in their castoffs. I can't believe there are STILL some fans talking about Jones trading Collaros to TO for Franklin. Franklin doesn't have to sign with Riders. Why on earth would he want to be part of a competition with Bridge if he' so good? And if Ray retires, Franklin would sign in TO where there would be no Bridge to compete with? It's pretty obvious that anyone who is still pining for Franklin has little faith in Bridge. He isn't bringing Collaros over to play backup. Jones had him in TO in 2012. He needed a 1st stringer which Bridge isn't & if Collaros renegotiates, he will want more money than Bridge. Probably a contract heavy on incentives. Otherwise the have to release him & he becomes a free agent to sign with one of the other interested clubs. He'd be a very good QB for the riders. Enough of the Franklin puppy love.
I dont have a quote but Naylor said on twitter that he is currently negotiating with the Riders as we speak.
Vikings Help Riders ... Set to Sign Edmonton's Brandon Zylstra!
Go Vikings , Go Riders.
"In Jones We Trust"
Collaris is due for a $200,000 bonus on Feb 1 on his existing contract.
He'll be either re-signed with a new contract or released by the end of January.
Collaros wont stay healthy.
Vince Young,haha.
Its only a good pickup if we pay him half what his contract is. If Im not mistaken he was the highest paid qb when he signed it and has been hurt or underpeforming ever since.
Collaros was terrible last year and has no real accomplishments to his name - he's been moderately successful at best, plus he's injury prone. You're logic is flawed.
Life long rider fan here - very underwhelmed by this trade. Collaros has shown hes very injury prone and sucked last year. What has he really ever done?
Trade Colaros for Nichols
Negative nellies and foreign fan trolls certainly have their shorts in a knot on here today. Great trade for everyone involved. Hamilton's gets to move on, Riders get an experienced, high performing quarterback who enters 2018 highly motivated with a chip on his shoulder. GREAT TRADE, WITHOUT QUESTION.
to anonymous:
If at the end of this season and the start of 2019 season that you think Glenn is still our starter than we are in real trouble.
Schmos fans. So funny.
to anonymous:
Do you not realize that father time is catching up with Glenn? Sure we all age the same, but an armchair QB can be 90 yrs old for that matter. I am talking about pro athletes here who play the game of football. Give your head a shake.
Listening to the Sportscage while reading the comments here. By the sounds of the people (especially the host) on there, might as well just hand the 2018 Grey Cup to the Riders RIGHT NOW!
Not a good trade... because Collaros would have been released by Ticats due to his huge contract, which would allow the Riders a chance to pick him up without giving up a draft pick (especially one as high as 10th ... Don't care even if it came from Montreal for Durant!)
Why would Bombers trade Nichols for Collaros? Again assuming Jones is smart & everybody else is stupid.
Welcome to Saskatchewan Mr. Zack Collaros.
Thank you Mr. Jones, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Reynolds.
El@
Collaros was an illegal block penalty away from a Grey Cup championship. He's a proven winner.
LF
I was about to complain about complaining about the complainers too.
LF
Wow, is it just cause the weather is warmer that the nuts and know-it-alls all come out to bitch and complain? Unreal. The trade makes nothing but sense and anyone with half a brain can see that. Some people really need to get a life.
Rex
Collaros had better be taking a MAJOR pay cut. Even half of his earlier salary is probably too much.
Even then, we may have traded a 10th overall for the next Drew Willy (and we potentially could have had Collaros for nothing).
Collaros had one good year and hasn't shown much since. He had better not be handed the starting job - it will probably be a disaster if he is.
As for KG, I imagine this is it for him as a Rider (and possibly a CFLer?). I suppose he didn't do much to help his case over the last half of the year. But I still kinda feel that he's gotten a raw deal so many times. Pro sports can give great glory, but it's also merciless.
Typical Sportscage. When Luc rated his coaches this week with the 4 Western rivals in the botyom 4 thst tells you all you need to know about the "expert" opinions coming from there. The newby in Mtl who has never coached a CFL game ramked above Buono, the winningest coach who has missed one playoff? Based upon what? His last 2 years coaching a high school club to a poor record? Luc's usual anti-Esk bias comes in by ranking Maas last despite fielding the best offence in the league 3 years running & compiling a 12-6 record with the first CFL club ever to have over a $1MM payroll on injured players. And of course Dave Dickenson only won 28 games the past 2 years. These are guys who can't hold a candle to a CFL rookie who coached teens the past 2 years? Hard to fathom this coming from a guy who actually played in the league at one time. Talk about being blinded by bias & disrespecting the coaches in this league. And you wonder why the Riders are laughed at? Win the Cup in 2018? Of course they will. At the Sportscage they're working on their record 3rd consecutive January Grey Cup victory. Drink up boys. The Kool-Aid's on the house.
Imagine bitchin about the guys that are bitchin...lol
Quick, can anyone name tenth round selections that went on and did something significant while starting in the CFL?
2nd last ANON that's funny. That coaches list was a joke. June Jones calling a deep end zone pass on the 2 yard line against the Riders costing them a win. How is he better than Dickenson? Luc is a good analyst who is learning but when he misses he is like Bob Uecker. Just a little bit outside. I remember at seasons end he said who wouldn't want KG? Lol! well Hufnagel, Popp, Desjardins, Buono and now Chris Jones. Probably the 5 best GM's in the league. We all knew KG wouldn't get it done, and the sad thing was the team around him was good enough. Hope Bridge is ok with this and ready to compete. He has the talent, probably lacking the intangibles (hard work, leadership etc.) that Collaros or KG brings.
Like I told you rider fans...you will not see James Franklin and it's now confirmed that Toronto has signed him on a 2 year contract...thanks for showing how uninformed you are.
Second last Anon bitchin about the SportsCage.
Your statement "" And you wonder why the Riders are laughed at"" You and your little circle jerk buddies are the only ones laughing. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are currently and have been for years and will continue to be the most successful franchise in the CFL. All other teams are trying anything they can to copy what SK is doing. So you and your tug each other Brothers keep circling up and laughing. While the Riders continue to build a competitive football team. All the while the Rider fans are attending games in the top CFL Stadium
Yesterday on the cage, Luc said that there isn't a quarterback in the CFL that doesn't want to play for the Riders. He followed that statement up with the question "Why wouldn't they?" I can think of several reasons. If that were true then all these quarterbacks would go to free agency and come banging on the Riders door. That green koolaid must be getting a bit too strong.
I never heard Luc rating the coaches but let me guess. I bet he put Chris Jones as number one.
Riders have been competitive for years? Ummm...the previous 3 seasons before 2017 were competitive lol. Also you were strong for about an 8 year window...2005 to 2013 but previous of that more on the losing side and by a margin I believe. Your fans are competitive not your team lol.
A grey cup finalist isnt even moderately successful. Proves nothing.
"Most successful franchise in the CFL"
[4GC in 100+ year history, huh!]
"Rider fans are attending games in the top CFL Stadium"
[huh? Mosaic Stadium, design flawed! A mismash of pizza slice section seating, no true effective circular bowl design. Unsafe, wrong location, no parking, prone to flooding damages, inadequate water fountains etc etc etc ...
The Eskimo fan posting his silly drivel over and over needs to get a life away from his keyboard!
Above Anonymous wrote, Rider fans attending games in the top CFL stadium.
Sorry Bub!!!! Not even close, as that distinction belongs to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan base with their world class Investors Group Field Stadium. World class!!!!
Ya well most people posting on here are competent and you are not.
Facts hurt you rider fans so get over it. Here is a fact also for you about your competitive team...Riders team history record 568 wins with 601 losses with 4 grey cups...is that what competitive means to you. Edmonton 668 wins with 476 losses and 14 grey cups...have a good day.
and not only that, Edmonton has the #1 rated quarterback in Mike Reilly. We won't need Kevin Glenn here......after all, look at how much Franklin played while he was here....just barely.
Relax Edmonton loser. It is simply speculation that as a backup for a year when you are going to host a GC you have a proven dude....no one is wanting him to play but if Reilly went down for 3 to 4 weeks would you not rather have a vet? If not then you deserve whatever you end up with dumbass
Actually if it isn't making a huge difference on playoff position I would rather have the two young guys play a couple few games. Your also classy name calling...your probably 40 with a grade one mentality by the sounds of it.
