DURANT SIGNS WITH WINNIPEG

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added veteran depth to the quarterback position by signing Darian Durant to a one-year contract on Saturday night.
Durant, a 12-year CFL veteran, is expected to play behind starter Matt Nichols.
"One of our objectives this off-season was to solidify depth at the quarterback position behind Matt Nichols,'' Bombers general manager Kyle Walters said in a release.
"Not only is Darian a veteran player in our league, but he brings a wealth of experience to our quarterback room and our locker-room. In many facets, it's a great addition for us, and we welcome Darian to the Bomber organization.''
The 35-year-old Durant spent last season with the Montreal Alouettes after 10 years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Montreal released him on Monday - a day before he was due to receive a $150,000 bonus. Durant signed a three-year, $1.25-million deal with Montreal after being acquired from the Roughriders.
The Alouettes struggled to a CFL-worst 3-15 record in 2017 and missed the playoffs for a third straight season. Durant threw for 3,233 yards with 15 TDs, but also had 16 interceptions.
He led Saskatchewan to three Grey Cup appearances and a Grey Cup victory in 2013.

Good for Darian, the last two years he's been behind the worst O-lines in the CFL. Best of luck Darian.

I'm happy for him and I hope he has a great season with a lot of team success just not against the Roughriders.

Darian and Weston .. together again! Watch for the Bombers to make a play on trading for Robb Bagg.

A backup with likely backup salary. Maybe more of a team player than some of us gave him credit for.

Durant won't even see the field he's done. Zach will lite it up here.

Darian won't even see the field, he's a clipboard holder in Winnipeg. Basic insurance package in the unlikely event Nichols goes down.

He will, long season and he'll get banged up.

The Riders will not be in serious trouble if Zack flops. We have Bridge still on other QBs as well.

I think Jones has done his homework. How much game film have any of us watched to see his mechanics etc. How many of us fans are connected with other coaches and GMs within the league to get the lowdown on players?

Let the football guys do the job that they are paid to do. Second guess them if you want after the season is complete but not before.

To post #1, were you in on the Zack negotiations? I'm amazed at how people who watch football in their rumpus room and chit chat at Tim Hortons know all about the inside knowledge of the Riders. Give us some insight on how you know everything but Jones seems to know nothing. Please enlighten us!! And why aren't you a GM in pro football?

An an Eskies fan I wish you could have come to the 2018 Grey Cup Champion Eskimos instead of Glenn ,but you are a great QB and a more amazing person I wish you all the best in The Peg hope you show up the riders every time you play them.Prove that you are worth more than the OVER PAID Collaros

The thought of him in blue bomber colours just made me puke in my mouth a little bit!! Happy for him hope he gets a chance to play. I think he's still got a little left in the tank!!!

Great news!

Anonymous said...

Oh yes’m he’s got lots left in the tank, and i’m Sure he’ll get a chance to play, the last 2 years for him we’re behind the 2 worst o lines in the league, This just made the west even more of a tight race. this just gave the bombers piece of mind, and maybe a good chance. They say you need 2 quarterbacks in this league and now they have 2. Excellent ones.

Matt Nichols is the starter and very little chance Darien plays.

Not sure how Durant fits in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg's offense is run first and dump off passes to the RB.

Durant has bounced those dump off passes at the feet of RBs forever!

Sure didn’t take long for him to land. Just made the bombers grey cup chances incredibly better ,

Good luck doubles!

"Winnipeg's offence is run....and dump". Absolutely agree. One reason Jones traded DD was because he couldn't complete any short passes & last I saw Durant he was throwing half a dozen consecutive short passes into the dirt in Montreal. The OL isn't his only problem. Let's be honest. Durant has been terrible since 2014 when he got injured. He's never been the same. Despite all his talk last year of still being a premium QB, he's not. DD may be trying to convince himself but even he must know. He was 9th in efficiency when NOT under pressure. He's having problems completing passes when the OL IS holding up. What else is ther to say. So Eskie fan, Glenn has his warts but be glad you got him, not Durant.

A very good signing, like Collaros he is leaving an awful situation and when given the chance again in a positive environment things will work out. Not sure when he will ever see the field, but that’s the life of the backup QB

The current plight of Durant and the Riders would have been so much different had not that arm injury to Durant taken place in WINNIPEG at the 2014 Banjo Bowl. A Grey Cup appearance had seemed quite possible then but soon everything turned to crap.

Durant had the Riders vying for first place at 8-2 when he was injured. He did not play in 2015. He had a good year statistically in 2016 despite Jones feilding a weak oline, and a revolving door receiving corps, leading to a CFL record for players on the roster in a season.

Montreal was a bad team, but Durant did not look good in 2017, Ill concede that. That is one bad year over his entire career. Keep hatin though!

You sound like you are trying to convince yourself that you know something about football.

Bombers GM Kyle Walters tried to get Kevin Glen for a song. Telling Glen they are not willing to spend that kind of money for a second QB. They need the money for elsewhere. Then they lose to the EE who stepped up. Then the sky was falling for Chicken Little Walters and he pays even more money for Durant than Glen. Plus he has now created a real issue between his starter and back up.
Glen would have been a better Bomber than Durant. For one reason Glen would have known his place. Where as now if I’m Nichols I’m thinking just a minute here. Your telling me this is my team. Yet you just signed a guy who has stated over and over that unequivocally he still wants to be a starter. Not once have the word back up been used by Darian Durant. It's not in his Vocabulary. It's only been other people’s words. Plus in the past Darian and LaPolice had a working relationship. If I’m Nichols I’m thinking… What a croque of crap! Now I am going to be thinking all the time what's really going on. They passed on Glen but went with Durant who wants to be a starter. There is no doubt that psychologically it's going to effected some of Nichols decisions both on and off the field. Bombers have made a HUGE MISTAKE signing Durant. On top of all of this. In SK Durant publically stated several times that he completely disliked Bomber fans. An exact time when Durant stated how much he despised Bomber fans was when Bomber fans covered the Saskatchewan #1 highway sign that welcomes you to Saskatchewan with “Welcome to Swaggerville”. You could see it and hear it in his voice. Durant hated everything to do with Winnipeg. He never ever spoke that way about any other team or fans!
Glen has a way better arm than Durant arm now after the 2014 Inury. Glen never has and never will be anything but a supportive team player. Instead Winnipeg now has more of a non supportive me 1st player.
D U R A N T
Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad choice.

If you actually read the article, Walters said the Bombers need depth behind Matt Nichols. Everyone, including Durant, knows that he is there as a backup. Nichols knows it is his team. I am sure he is confident enough to be comfortable with Durant on the sidelines. There is no conflict there except in your mind.
I doubt there are any Rider players that like Bomber fans; no more then Bomber fans like Rider fans. Yet there are players that have gone from one team to another and it takes about a day to appreciate the loud and boisterous crowd where they now walk the sidelines. Durant will be fine in Winnipeg. And let's face it, "Swaggerville" was ill advised and fans and players from.across the league hated it.
If the Bombers make it to the playoffs, there is no doubt in my mind that I would rather have Durant behind Nichols then Glenn. In 17 years, Glenn has proven that he is not a playoff quarterback that you want to hang your hopes on. Durant has had some of his best games in playoffs. As to why Jones cut Durant, he has cut a lot of good players so that is anyone's guess.

durante your no goode!

Morgan said...

He's only a team player because he has no choice now.

Morgan said...

Hahaha here's that whiney bitter Eskimos fan again!!! Cry cry cry little baby!!!

Morgan said...

So very true!!! Sheets and Cates both developed lower back problems from bending over so often to catch his low passes!!!

Morgan said...

How do you explain 2011 Then? Was that a good year for Durant? There's a reason that his qb rating is below 90 over his career. He just isn't that good.

"In Jones We Trust"

Anonymous said...

Haha. Keep hatin bud. Glenn sucks. He's a career playoff choke job and showed it again last year.

Anonymous said...

Really! Outside of the IN JONES WE TRUST got old 2 years ago, have you got anything to add? The genius CAP manager has 2 QB's who potentially will gobble up $800 grand in CAP space. Genius! Paid $190K for a lineman who had it handed to him by old buddy Hughes in one half in Calgary, not to mention 3 sacks allowed in the final by Lemon, who Jones cut for nothing. Genius! How's LaFrance with the 6 figure salary working out? The best RB's are imports. Genius! It appears Collaros took Jones to the cleaners with 430K in gtd money. I'll take 225K up front before I play a down, please. And only 1 year, please. The bidding can start in 2019. Show me some love if you want me to stay. Genius! Collaros & Bridge can both walk if they want to. In Jones You Trust?? You set the bar awfully low. Come into the lot. I have a real nice used Lada for you. It's a steal, honest. Trust me.

And the Anon spouts off once again without any proof. Throwing out numbers of salaries, have you seen their contracts? Go settle down and back to your own teams site. But in any case i am sure you are a nice person just need somewhere to air your grievences.

" IN MR. JONES WE TRUST"

Nice addition!

Uhhh...pretty easily. 2011 was the gong show Greg Marshall experiment that tanked, with Ken Miller in a weird VP position alongside taman. There were plenty of issues that year, including a stagnant roster.

How do you explain Durants record and results in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012,2013 and 2014 and his place as #2 all time with the Riders in most QB stats?
