ALOUETTES RELEASE DARIAN DURANT

MONTREAL -The Montreal Alouettes released veteran quarterback Darian Durant on Monday, the day before he was scheduled to receive a significant bonus.

Durant, 35, was due a $150,000 roster bonus Tuesday.
Durant signed a three-year, $1.25-million deal with Montreal after being acquired from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Montreal posted a CFL-worst 3-15 record last season, missing the playoffs for a third straight season.
Durant threw for 3,233 yards with 15 TDs but also had 16 interceptions.

On Saturday, Montreal signed former NFL starter Josh Freeman to a two-year deal.

When Mike Sherman was hired as Montreal's head coach Dec. 20 he wouldn't commit to Durant, adding the starting job was "up for grabs.''

He just wasn't THAT good folks...

Not worth the money. Reality bites. On the plus side, DD did the right thing not restructuring the deal. He can do that with anyone. Now we see if Collaros restructures before his bonus is due Feb 1. I would think so, but what has he got to lose? If he gets released the Riders have to outbid the Als. He's not getting his old money back either way. Same situation as DD.

Yes he was good. 2009-2013 he took the Riders to 3 Grey Cups in 5 years. Had won the 2009 Grey Cup if some dumb Rider realized he didn’t belong in the field and cost the team the 2009 GC. He was just fine in 2013 and got the Riders to the Western Final on his back. Printers had been shut down.
Then things went downhill after Injuries.
So don’t say he wasn’t good. He’s just not good right now.

No shaft, his time was up 3 years ago.

If Durant thinks for one moment he has something left in the tank, he's sadly mistaken. But,,, the stupid blue bombers of winnipeg wait with open arms looking for compititon to theit club starting qb position.

No surprise. Writing was on the wall with a new coach and the signing of Freeman (not that he will make the team). I really can't think of a team he may end up with. If he does sign it will be as a backup but will need to take a huge pay cut. Time for Darian to consider life after football.

I disagree, he was good, very good. But Father Time is undefeated.

Amend to say:

He just wasn't THAT good folks after his 2014 & 2015 injury cycle ...

I agree with the above poster. He didn't get the shaft he just wasn't that good. His overall CFL record does not lie. He also throws fellow coaches and teammates under the bus and does not take the blame. So glad the day he was traded away from this team! Good riddance and I will be making sure i'm not at the game down the road whenever he is inducted to the plaza! I would take any present day starting qb in the CFL before Durant. IMO he got what he deserved the way he acted and played in MTL even though he played for an idiot GM!!

I will always be a Darian Durant fan, regardless of the year he had in Montreal.

Wow. What a difference a year makes. DD gets traded, signs huge deal with Als,and everyone in Rider nation wants to run Jones out of town. I guess all athletes have a best before date.Clearly his best years are now behind him.
Riderville still feels bad for him for the bad year he had and we wish him
all the best wherever he may end up. Its just too bad that he ended up in a grease fire in Montreal and it just doesn't seem right for his career to be on the downside. He was never the same after those two major injuries.

Ah, those football gods at it again...

Thanks Scott!

You know Darian was a pretty good QB for us. Yes he wasn't the same after the injuries but why do we need to pile on him now?

Look there's no point discussing it as it's known.

Let's remember the good times and forget the bad. This book is closed!

If he is so good Scott as you say why does Durant have a losing record in the CFL? Durant was never any good! And don't say 2013 because any qb could of won with that team around him. Most of the good qbs i know have winning records in CFL NFL or even College. The older I get i start to see why other teams laugh at Rider fans and there messed up thinking and comments! Why are so many Rider fans totally out to lunch so much more than other teams fans? And yes I am a Rider fan but hate to admit it sometimes. Durant got his well deserved Karma!!!

Anonymous said...

I think he just wanted out of the als, no different than all the coaches who turned them down, he can restructure where ever he gets a chance, or. He can go coach down south if he’s done up here .

Anonymous said...

Pro sports is strange. On one hand it is always said that its a team game. Then it is said he wasn't that good because his win/loss record etc etc. DD lost (injuries?) what he had to offer and that was the ability to escape and run. Once that is gone you need a top O line for success.

DD gave Rider fans a HUGE amount of entertaining football. Then fans dump on him. (Or is it only the kids of those who once booed Lancaster)

There is no quarterback in this league that would have looked good in the greáse fire that Montreal was last year and the same can be said for the Riders in 2016. Durant is classy, never three anyone under the bus but Jones did throw Durant under a bus.
Doubles took the Riders to three Grey Cups, won one and would have won two if it had not been for Kavis Reed. For a franchise with only four cups, that is very good. He is second in Rider passing yards. For anyone saying that he never was good, I think your memory is bad. He was a hero and icon here until Chris Jones told you he wasn't. And you all believed Jones.

Anonymous said...

It didn't end well in Sask with his demands on salary, but he will always be a Rider great in the history books.

Anonymous said...

Glenn has a job, Durant doesn't. Where ya' at Jones haters?

Anonymous said...

I think it was -18 C in that 2013 Western Final against B.C. I watched this man put an entire team on his back and single handedly win that game. I then watched this man QB the team to the Grey Cup Championship in Regina.

Darian Durant was the greatest Quarterback on the greatest team ever assembled. How he goes out of the CFL is completely moot.

Now here is the lesson learned. I can't tell him what to do I can only advise. If he chooses to retire then he should leave and not look back. Ron Lancaster, Kent Austin, Kerry Joseph were all pushed out of Dodge.

Take your 2 Grey Cups rings, and go live a good life.

Durant was an excellent q.b. For the riders. W/L records mean nothing, when the crunch came down he won, i’m Still not convinced that he’s done, since he’s been back he’s never been with a decent team, the riders o line sucked jones’s First year and the whole als team sucked last year. I’m thinking if he got on a decent team he would still have some years left. I don’t think anyone’s jumping to play for the als at this point in time. Long live DD one of the greatest riders to ever play for the riders. Go DD

Anonymous said...

Thanks Darian you played QB for the Riders in their greatest era. Four Grey Cup games in seven years and you took us to three of them.

When the o-line played out you never had a chance and that's not on you although the kids of the people that booed Lancaster don't realize it.

Anonymous said...

Glen has a job because he plays for peanuts, those are the kind of guys that bring the rest of the players salaries down. I wonder what the other players think of that.

Anonymous said...

'Doubles' earned the new nickname of 'Triples' in 2013 when he started his third Grey Cup game.

Anonymous said...

i actually wonder when people will start apologizing to chris jones and thank him for having the foresight and bravado to do whats right and firstly ask durant to take a pay cut in 2016 then trade him in 2017.

there is no doubt darian did some amazing things in his time with the riders and was a key contributor in 2013. but if anyone believes he was ever a top flight cfl quarterback they are nothing more than a blind rider fan. only twice a division all star, never a league all star. never a league award nominee. only twice the teams outstanding player.

and now likely ends his career as a full time starter with a record of 61-66. that's an average of six wins a year and 3,100 yards but a respectable 17 touchdown passes.

as time passes and reality surfaces people will realise that players like ricky ray, kevin glenn, bo levi mitchell and mike reilly all had amzaing career while durant's was, well, moderately successful.

Scott Thompson said...

You don’t end up in second for pretty much all franchise passing categories without being nit only good, but very good. My only problem with Darian was the optics of his “leadership” or lack thereof. He never appeared to shoulder responsibility or accountability well, he was not a mentor, or so it appeared. Still the second best qb this franchise had, better than Kent Austin. See you in the plaza Darian good luck in your future endeavours.

The 2013 club may have been the greatest Rider team ever assembled but FAR from the greatest team ever assembled. It was a 3rd place club. Yes, they would have lost to BC if DD didn't run the ball himself putting up close to 100 yards the last qtr. Nobody else was getting it done on offence. The great teams led by Flutie & Moon would have handily beat that club. It will always live on in Rider lore but get serious. How many HOF'ers do you think will come out of that team? Rider fans seem to know little about the rest of the CFL constantly overvaluing their own players & undervaluing others. It's when they leave the truth comes out. "He was never any good to begin with". Riigghht! And Bridge is the latest great QB in waiting in Regina - until he leaves. Then he's the bum. Worst fans in the league. You read it here all the time how they look at former players - Chick, Dressler, Getzlaf.

Anonymous said...

Haha - like you know what he has left in his tank. Was a tough situation last year with a bad team and I dont think his heart was in it out there. Doesnt mean he's done.

Anonymous said...

So don't admit it. Go cheer for another team of you don't like it nobody is forcing you to be a rider fan. We are better off without fan like you.

Anonymous said...

Chris Jones's 2016 Rider team just wasnt THAT good.

Anonymous said...

Haha - so you were the guy who was brooding all those years he was starting here and winning. Was funny to hear some of you finally let out your anger out in the stands when he was here last year with the Alouettes.

Anonymous said...

Hear!Hear!

Anonymous said...

The idea that the injuries changed him are totally false. He had a good 2016 statistically, considering the team Jones put together. What changed him was the falling out with Jones, and the nastiness of how his time here ended. He did not look like his heart was in it last year, which was sad to see.

Anonymous said...

I havent checked his stats, but if thats true, Durant has a losing record for three reasons - 2011, 2016 and 2017.

If you want to say any QB could have won in 2013, then you also have to recognize that any qb would lose most of their games on those teams. Cant have it both ways, bub.

Anonymous said...

Right here! Jones bungling of the qb situation cost the Riders in the playoffs!

Glenn, was Glenn throwing 3 picks in the EDF and Jones looks like he's lost with 3 qb changes in the game. Don't you forget it.

Also, playing for all 9 teams and having 0 grey cups is not a good thing.

Anonymous said...

Haters gonna hate boys. Don't let the negative comments form the negative people with hate in their lives get u down.

Us true fans know what Darian did. We remember 09. And 10. And we especially remember 13. Especially against BC. That performance won us the Grey Cup.

Darian was the second best QB in Sask Roughriders history. But yeah...he was no good lol

Anonymous said...

Will always respect DD and laugh at his haters. He had his weaknesses, sure. But the man was and is a warrior, leader and winner. The way Jones classlessly blamed him for the TEAM record in 2016 and publically insulted him, will never sit well with me.

Ill keep my season tickets, and suport the team in general. But I will not spend an extra dime on merchandise, xmas gifts, lotto tickets, etc, until jones is gone, or (fat chance of this)Jones admits that behaviour was a mistake, whenever that may be.I just cant respect a guy like that, win or lose.

Thank you Darian for being part of Rider Nation. You QB a Grey Cup in 2013, and came close on a couple of other games. True Rider fans won’t forget you.

Darian Durant ... great, excellent, good, the best ...
with that kind of prevalent mentality, no wonder that organization only has 4 championship titles in a 100+ year history.
Darian Durant - not a good qb period, not even close. He may have had a moment here or there, but hey! who doesn't?
Best Roughriders qb? easy - Kent Austin without a doubt. Cerebral smarts, a good arm, a pure genuine qb if there ever was one. Ron Lancaster second ... just on desire alone to get the job done, to win games consistently year after year.
Darian Durant ... a year after year, game after game of inconsistency on the field of play. A man who would rather rolls his eyes in blame at teammates when it was he himself who should have owned it. Darian Durant, he left on his own terms, chose not to resign with the Roughriders when given the chance after a real professional football evaluation determined his skill set not conducive to his player contract, a contract recklessly provided by a giddy clueless previous regime of Hopson, Taman, O'Day, Chamblin. A player contract based on loyalty not field skills.
Darian Durant ... a man who just couldn't get it, never did have it ... the pre-requisite skill set to lead a professional football team on and off the field of play. A greedy man who now is left to wallow in his own decisions. Hmmm ... wonder if he'll own up to that?

Too many anon hater comments. DD did beat better Stamps teams in the WestFinal to get the the GC in 2009, 2010, 2013 and should have won 2. the 2010 team was an inferior team and probably shouldn't have been there. So he could get it done in crunch time before the injuries. He was really good when it counted. Lancaster was easily the best the franchise had. Before my time but look at the teams win/loss record when he was QB. He would go like 14-2, 12-4 etc. Austin had the stats but if you throw short passes every down of course you will. He only won 1 as a QB. he was probably 3rd best. anyways why slag DD. Dumb. Hes not a Rider no point hating just to show your ignorance.

Anonymous said...

This guy sums it up well! ^^^^^

Anonymous said...

Not what Kent Austin said about him , I guess some people just don’t like other people but Durant will always be a great rider , own up to that.

Anonymous said...

I know a qb that couldn't have won with that team... Kevin Glenn hahahahaha

Anonymous said...

The Durant lovers are out in full force today! I'm actually embarrassed to be a rider fan associated with majority of the clueless Rider fan base. Rider fans just seem to accept losing and refuse to face facts. Its mind boggling how clueless most of you all are! At least we have a coach now who doesn't didn't want overpaid players with losing records!!!!

Lol

What is Chris jones record with the riders. Not very f******* good.

Anonymous said...

You dont need bravado to handle player personnel issues. In fact that is the biggest reason why many people dislike and struggle to support Jones. No aplologies coming his way.

Durant's W/L record took a HUGE hit over the last 2 seasons, which has as much or more to do with the rosters that Chris Jones and Kavis Reed put together as it does with Durant's play. He had a solid statistical year in 2017 despite Jones fielding a weak oline and record number of players.

Kevin Glenn being compared in the same sentence as Ricky Ray? Shows what you know.

Anonymous said...

Haha, you're delusional.

Anonymous said...

We have a coach now who thought Kevin Glenn was the answer, and Glenn proceeded to do what he always does in the playoffs. Lose.

Anonymous said...

I too am embarrassed to be a Rider fan. At this point, the years that Durant had a decent O line and team around him, from 2008 to 2013, the Riders were more successful than any time in recent history. Three Grey Cup appearances. One win. All with Durant at the pivot. None of those years were the Riders in fourth or fifth place in the west. Yet now, a lot of you claim that Durant never was any good. A bad QB does not take a team to three Grey Cup games in five years. It is embarrassing that so called Rider fans now have turned on Durant like a rabid dog. And have the nerve to call anyone that still acknowledges what Durant did for this team "clueless and naive". Check put history. Those years were some of the most successfull the Riders have ever had.
As for Jones, after two years, he still has a losing record here. Just barely got his team into the playoffs, only through a crossover. No one can see into the future to know what will happen next season but so far he is only "moderately successful ". Sorry, but "numbers don't lie". Who is clueless and naive to think that Jones is so wonderful when he has done very little up to now? He has two more years to prove it but hasn't yet.

Anonymous said...

Show some class....I can't believe all of the DD bashers who profess to be Rider fans.
He gave you his heart and soul for the better part of a decade. That decade rivals the George and Ronnie era. In other words the best two decades in Rider history.
Oh well, I guess your Grandfather bashed Ronnie, bitterness runs in families.

Anonymous said...

Darian should land somewhere. Not the same after the 2014 2014 injuries. Would have liked to see him retire a Rider but thats pro sports. he gave us a lot of entertaining football and a Grey Cup. So how many Rider QB's can say that. if he retires I hope its with he class he showed with the Riders.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Scott!

Anonymous said...

If Darian Durant had any brains he'd use them and accept a restructured $75,000.** pre year player contract from Montreal based on playing time. If he can't contribute to the cause, $40,000.**. or be cut yet again. Enough said!

Anonymous said...

Durant will land somewhere and jones will be gone in 2 years, he’ll up and begone on his own, take it to the bank.
