10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR SOBER BOWL CANADA

1 - BREAKING NEWS: It's funny the things you learn sitting on a beach in Mexico. Just this morning I learned former Roughrider LS Levi Steinhauer has been hired as the strength & conditioning coach for the Korean badminton and ping pong teams at the Olympics. Levi Steinhauer - a Moose Jaw product - is an Olympian!

2 - WILD CARD: The latest buzz in the CFL surrounds Argos RB James Wilder Jr. who's threatening to boycott the 2018 season unless Toronto lets him out of his contract to sign in the NFL. Sorry kid, you're not the first to be in this situation and you won't be the last. NFL agents have called CFL rules "archaic" - and that may be true - but they were drafted by some very smart men to have the league's best interests at heart. I hope he sits.

3 - RIDERS FAVOURITES?: So many people have asked how the trade for Zach Collaros affects the Riders' Grey Cup chances in 2018? Personally, I feel Collaros makes Saskatchewan the #1 contender and that's the truth. However the Vegas odds look this way: Calgary 350-1, Edmonton 500-1, Toronto 600-1, Saskatchewan/BC/Winnipeg/Hamilton 700-1, Ottawa 1000-1, Montreal 1200-1.

4 - BURNING BRIDGE: Apparently Brandon Bridge literally was burning once he learned that Zach Collaros signed for $430,000 for this season (we have no idea what Bridge is scheduled to earn). In careful analysis, we feel Bridge should be upset at no one but himself and his agent. We were stunned they opened contract talks before the season was over and even more stunned they did the deal before Christmas. Not seeing what was available on the open market is just bad business. Now let's get this all behind us and look forward, not back.

5 - SO LONG BOBBY V: It was a rough week on the Rider Nation, whatwith the passing of Bob Vespaziani and Jack Urness. Condolences to the families of both, however I never had the pleasure of meeting Jack. Bobby V, on the other hand, was someone I spent A LOT of time with when he was Roy Shivers' righthand man. He'd always introduce the Rider PR man, himself and me as the "Bobby B Three" when we were checking in at airports and hotels. ("You haven't heard of us? We're the hottest musical trio on tour!" he'd say). Bobby V was a fountain of football knowledge and a devoted family man. He will be missed so much.

In the circle of life, congrats to Weston and Tegan Dressler on the birth of Cooper James Dressler!

6 - SUPER BOWL 52: It's the Super Bowl championship so of course we'll be watching the big game from Minnesota but, to me, the match-up is so ho-hum. Can you imagine if it was Jacksonville-Minnesota?? North America would be going bonkers! Now it's the Eagles and their annoying fanbase against the Patriots, whom we all feel like we know personally after so many trips to The Dance. The match-up is good, but not great.

7 - SUPER BOWL CANADA: Tune into the CBC News at 6:00 pm as they're doing a story on our inaugural Sober Bowl Canada at Tony Roma's on February 4. Thanks Jill Morgan! Sober Bowl is a family-friendly, alcohol-free party to watch the Super Bowl and mingle with CFL personalities. There will be a Nacho & Chili Bar, Mocktails and prizes! The idea is to keep Saskatchewan roads safe and promote family time. All proceeds go to Oxford House Society of Saskatchewan. Win/Win/Win. Thanks Saputo Dairy of sponsoring. Email pedersenrecovery@aol.com for tickets.

8 - TONY ROMO: It's another popular question these days: Do you like Tony Romo's colour commentary on NFL broadcasts on CBS? I couldn't decide for the longest time but have concluded that 'yes', I do. When it comes to broadcasting, I'm a staunch traditionalist but Tony has come in on fire and done it his way. It's refreshing and entertaining. My only question is, if he can predict every play before it happens, why don't the Cowboys hire him as Defensive Coordinator?

9 - GO PATS GO: The 2017-18 Regina Pats have turned into a box of chocolates. (You never know what you're going to get). But to me, that's incredibly entertaining and is what junior hockey is supposed to be about; unpredictability. Here's what I'm fascinated to see: If John Paddock can motivate and pull these guys together in time for the playoffs and Memorial Cup. It's crystal clear that they're good enough, but they embarrassed themselves to start last Friday's game against Moose Jaw. This is turning out to be a lot of fun!

10 - GOLDEN KNIGHTS: The expansion Vegas NHL team is - by far - the talk of the NHL right now, leading the Western Conference at the All Star break. They say the Golden Knights have completely changed that city. I can't wait to get down there to see for myself. My only pet peeve is that NHL insiders say, "The Golden Knights play like it's the playoffs every night". Great! But with an average NHL salary of $2.4M, why can't every team play balls out for 82 games? That's one of the biggest problems with the NHL that I have.
And there's no bandwagon-jumping here! You know I was on the Vegas bandwagon from Day 1!

Y'er welcome,
RP

Haha, number one for the Grey Cup with Zach Collaros...based on what? He hasn't done anything to prove he is that guy.

Rod,
Badminton and Table tennis are not sports on the Winter Olympic program. These events are in the Summer Olympics...so he will be a part of the 2020 games in Tokyo.

James Wilder should sit as unless you were Jerome Messam truth be told I couldn't tell you another RB that is a must have. In Rider history I didn't see George Reed but we had two - Wes Cates and Korey Sheets past that RBs are interchangeable. I heard he was going to work construction? Someone will have to explain to me why these guys all go to college as I'm not sure what that translates to post academic/football.

The Roughriders should be favorites because Calgary is essentially the Brandon Wheat Kings of the CFL. You could pick them every year but as time goes by they really don't get it done. As long as Ricky Ray is in the CFL and Marc Trestman is coaching that's who I am going with. The East doesn't' seem as chewed up every year, they toil in obscurity and get hot at the right time. Once those Western teams pound on each other I think at the end they are mentally and physically worn down.

The best thing Bridge can do is, train hard, play hard, earn the starting job (or when Collaros gets hurt, which he will again) Bridge will take over and prove to the Rider organization that he is their guy. If he does that and, get's the team a Grey Cup or close to it, next year he can walk in and say $300 - 500K or see you later!!!

I saw a game in Vegas a few weeks ago (Rangers/Knights) and in true Vegas fashion they put on quite the show, and fans are really into it. It is pure entertainment and a great arena right behind the New York New York Hotel. Be prepared to pay $13us for a beer and $22 for a Margarita (yes $22us) Having said that it wasn't sold out and probably 20% - 25% at the game were Ranger fans. Thought he Vegas were very vocal all game, it was fun to be at. Was a great experience, I would go back, probably helps that they do have a good exciting team to watch. I also went to the Ranger/Coyotes game the night before in Phoenix. (I'm a Rangers fan) The quicker the NHL pulls out of Phoenix the better. Arena was maybe 65-70% full, half were Ranger fans who cheered louder when they scored than Coyote fans did. Seats in the Gila River Arena are in bad shape, dirty with rips in them. As usual in some USA markets high school and university volleyball got more coverage on TV than the Coyotes did. Time to pull the plug Mr. Bettman!

Not a Romo fan as a player but he does a great job on TV. He knows the game and what teams should and will do in certain situations, and it is amazing how often he mentions a particular play the team with the ball should be executing....and they run it!!

Two things, first is that jury deliberations start today for Ronald Gasser in the Joe McKnight murder. I've been following closely and I have no idea how this is going to end, but I don't have a good feeling on getting a guilty verdict. Just saying. I understand gun laws very well. To get 12 jurors to unanimously agree that Gasser murdered McKnight (as defined by the law and not someone's sentiment or personal opinion) I think will be tough.

Ramon Antonio Vargas is a New Orleans news man who has been in the courtroom and tweeting good coverage, @RVargasAdvocate if you're interested and want to follow how this ends.

Second, watch the Philly fans go after Brady and the Patriots. This could become a major story. Philly fans are going to camp in the airport when the Patriots arrive, they are going to camp in the Patriots hotel, in the restaurants they eat in, the Patriots are going to have to lock down to avoid them. The Philly fans are relentless and merciless.

And since the Patriots are convicted cheaters, they're going to hear it for that as well. Which I think is great.

Love Tony Romo's work on the NFL telecasts. Perfect sense of humour. Best one out there. Hope the people in charge put him up as the replacement for Gruden on Monday Night Football.

Jim Popp has a full-blown crisis on his hands in Toronto and its going to hurt the CFL. The Victor Butler article on 3 Down Nation is the latest blow. Someone need to talk some sense into old Jim!

Are those Grey Cup odds of: A) Making it to the Grey Cup or B) Winning

If it's winning, the odds for Calgary Chokepeders should be 35000-1

Ha, sorry Stinks fans but you know it's true.

Two comments. Point 3. Last time you picked Riders for the Grey Cup was 2016, Rod. Considerably more subdued last year but I guess going from last to 4th has brought out the Grey Cup talk again. So, Rod, no offence but what took you so long? Bodog has the odds about right. Point 4. Depends what Bridge was promised. I can guess since Jones keeps saying both know there will be a competition, which is true in the sense that all 4 QB's kept will be competing for the #1 job. But Bridge & Collaros & Jones know it's Collaros' job to keep. Who was it that said Jones REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted Collaros. Oh yeah, you! He's not paying Zach 225K up front to sit on the bench. But Brandon is mad because he was promised more as per Jones" "competition" comments still going on, which is basically a lie. He knows he was duped. Wonder what happens in a year if Zach decides to go elsewhere, maybe back East where his ties & Toronto teacher girlfriend are? Will Bridge sign again? Fool me once yadda yadda. I know Rider Nation doesn't believe the obvious, but this is why players who played for Jones get disenchanted with him. That's why Nichols wasn't an option last year, why the big FA's available in Edmonton stayed, not followed, when he left. It's why Franklin was never going to Regina. He has no loyalty to players. And that's why he is such a lightning rod among Rider fans. If you don't get the Cup and, say, you're looking for a QB next year, the pressure will be on Jones big time. Now there's an easy prediction.

Not a Stamps fan but for the person saying that they simply don't get it done is not really thinking straight seeing the Riders have 4 Grey Cups in just over 100 years of football...like be seriously think of how many the Stamps have in comparison. I guess the Riders never get it done either...FACT.

Brandon Bridge essentially just did what Henry Burris didn't do. When you have the opportunity to go to the free market you go. This doesn't mean you have to take offers, but at 29 if Collaros is healthy then Bridge gets to be the next Adrian MacPherson. Rule 1 there is no loyalty anywhere in life - not football, not business, not personal connections. Things exist in the moment and are fluid. Lesson learned young man.

Free open family gathering for friends of Bill W to watch the Super Bowl at Alano Club. Pot luck applies there is always to much food but come along and we follow the 7th tradition. What you can give you give, what you can't give in dollars come have a good time enjoy fellowship and pass it on down the line when you can. Save your $30 this is more fun. Plus this is not about making money and having a sober event in a bar.

At least they can make it there to try for it...where your riders are at home watching it as usual.

Fact

Bridge won more games in 2017 than Zach, and Zach hasn't won a game in a long long time.....I think he is 0-12 - guess we will find out who is a better quarterback.

"Collaros has done nothing to prove he's the guy" tell me, friend, which colour Crayon is the tastiest?

Anonymous said...

#2 Wilder

Jim Popp is wrong with his stance and he's tarnishing the CFL for doing it. You too Rod, maybe not in small print but in the big picture you're wrong.

Anonymous said...

I put the majority of the blame on the CFLPA for the sad James Wilder Jr. situation. The big cap increase of the last CBA only benefited QB's and Canadian Offensive Lineman. There contracts got fatter and the league minimum, which the majority of players earn, barely budged. The CFLPA needs better leadership to serve all its members.

Anonymous said...

How come a team can terminate a contract any time but the player can't? Thought this was a free country .

Anonymous said...

Now that Gruden is gone Romo is the most annoying color man on NFL broadcasts.

Anonymous said...

Rod, since I have been coming to your site you have cheered for the Stars, Coyotes and now the Vegas Knights. I assume that you will change again shortly. Maybe , to appease the sports networks you should try a Canadian team. Go Blues!

It's a beautiful time to be a regina sports fan. The pats are rolling as usual and are getting ready to host and hoist the Memorial Cup. Meanwhile, the riders have built the most powerful team in the CFL and are poised to head to Alberta's dumpy capital city to contend for the Grey Cup! Oh baby it's good to be in Regina!!! Also, it'll be oh so enjoyable to see the pats lay a wooping on the swift current Broncos in their home and home series this weekend... Time for the Broncos to get a big dose of reality and to be brought back to earth!!!

Morgan.... You should change your Prescriptions as soon as possible. They seem to have you thinking that the world is going to change by the sounds of it. Regina will NOT sweep the Broncos but may possibly split . Pats Hoisting the Memorial Cup just ain't going to happen and you know it.Saskatchewan hoisting the Grey Cup would be nice but very unlikely also . So once you have had those prescriptions changed possibly you will come back down to earth.

joey how do you know the pats wouldn't be hoisting the memorial cup are you god i think not!
