COORS LIGHT RECAP: HURRICANES 6 PATS 2

Keith Hershmiller Photography
REGINA - The Pats' woes continued Saturday night. The return of defenceman Josh Mahura from Canada's World Junior tryout camp meant little as the Queen City Kids succumbed 6-2 to the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes, extending their losing streak to three games.

The teams traded goals in the first period - including Robbie Holmes' 7th of the season for Regina - and it was 1-1 after one.

The Hurricanes broke loose for four second period goals to up their lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes. Starting Pats goalie was lifted at the point, turning in a 23-save performance on 28 shots.

Each team scored in the third - including Matt Bradley's 21st of the season - and the 'Canes skated off with the lopsided victory. Back-up goalie Max Paddock stopped 8 of 9 shots in relief of Brown.

Regina was outshot 37-35 while going 0/4 on the powerplay and 3/7 on the penalty kill.

The Pats went 1-3-1 on their five-game homestand.

The attendance was 6171 in the Brandt Centre.

The Pats (16-16-3) conclude a 3-game weekend Sunday in Saskatoon in a 4:00 pm faceoff on Access TV and 620 CKRM.

OK. Up to now, I have tried to be as respectful as possible in relation to the Pats in this their Memorial Cup host season. However, this game tonight was putrid. Should it have been the low point of the year, fine, as it is better to happen now than at or during playoff time. However, look at the Pats result tonight, with Mahura back, the overager in net, and just without Steel. Awful.

Terrible team with terrible uniforms wow!

There was total lack of desire tonight. I saw average goaltending, defence that was letting guys standing in front of net untouched, lack of playmaking upfront, undisciplined penalties by vets and there is no chemistry on this team. Steele alone isn't going to change things drastically we need minimum 5-6 players brought in to make them competitive. Never seen so many people that couldn't wait for the 50/50 to be drawn so they can get out of the rink. I hope the Christmas break helps them refocus but I think Paddock needs to get busy!

Question I have is why hasn’t there been a single trade yet? MJ and Swift have each made there high flying teams better. Pats need a complete over haul!! This team will be very fortunate to even make the playoffs.
Other teams in the league are going to have the Pats exactly where they want them. Give us this this and that or go to the golf course before the Mem Cup starts. IMO I don’t care what they do they have no chance at winning a WHL championship, if lucky they make playoffs and get bounced first round. If they are only going to make trades not to embarrass themselves of not making playoffs they may as well not make any and go with what they have. May as well save your draft picks and the little talent there is for the future.

This all started 1 year ago. At the start of the year last year that group of kids was as good as it gets. Paddock then went and traded the core and depth of that team and this is the result. Paddock has lost the trust of all his players and we see where it has led them. The Pats dressing room is a toxic place right now and Paddock should be held responsible.

Yea that was a tough one to watch for sure. Boys just didn't have it and it seemed every time there was a rebound it ended up a Canes stick and into the back of the net. We couldn't do the same on the few rebounds Skinner gave up, and Canes PP drove the last stake in. Brown didn't get much help either in front of the net with Pats being bystanders. Could be another washout in Sktn today if they don't get their act together.

JP said there will be changes so I am sure the players are as interested in that as us Fans are...there will be less pressure from one standpoint after Jan 10th. Things may start happening as soon as next week when the WHL Xmas break starts. Will be an interesting next 3 weeks.

As for the attendance 6200.Every game 5000 are counted in as sold season tickets so it's false, let's actually count the scans that come in the door game by game to get a real attendance so quit falsifying the attendance numbers.

Looks good when every game is around the 6000 mark as attendance so rest of the league looks at the Pats commenting great attendance. If there were on Friday and Saturday games a total of 6200 per game I was in the wrong arena.

As far as I am concerned after the 50/50 draw the only effort displayed were the fans in the parking lot trying to get home early.

As I have said in the past blogs about 6 weeks ago a complete rebuild and comments were made you are crazy a rebuild in a Memorial cup season guess I was right.

Let's face it the talent is not there,no chemistry, and a lack of self discipline has cost this team the season. There are only a few players who want to be here and are trying every game but the rest of the dead weight must go .Sounds harsh but frustration has taken over on my kindness.

John Paddock has a plan you can tell in his comments after last night's embarrassing effort. Players on this team be ready as your futures will change dramatically. This team has a ton of great kids with a lot of potential as for what is happening is like finding the answer to where is flight 370.

Pats better win in Saskatoon Sunday afternoon or it'd doo doo time. Speaking of Saskatoon, how on earth can they have ave home attendance of 3,668 in 15 games? Moose Jaw has ave 3,513 in 18 home games and they have 1/4 the population of Saskatoon. I guess Saskatoon has really turned into a little Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary Lacrosse/Cricket city.

This continues to be comical. Two wasted home games against two weak opponents. You can't make chicken salad out of chicken S&*t. This lineup is a non playoff lineup. The Russian defenseman #2 is awful. Seriously, you can pull better players out of any small town in Saskatchewan - yet this is their import pick. The Rider coaches and management would be run out of town if they performed like this on a year where they were hosting the Grey Cup. Paddock has been given a free pass from the media and fans thus far - WHY?? He hasn't brought one player into this lineup this year that makes people want to buy a ticket. Friday and Saturday night the rink was half full - the fans are staying away because they don't compete and it's downright boring. I can't see how they can make major improvements - as they have no real major assets to trade. Not holding my breath!

"First and Last year season ticket holder". Really that shows you were only in it for the seat at the Memorial Cup, you are just looking for an excuse for not supporting them after this year anyway! The rest of us true fans will be there to support them for years to come. See Ya!

Some of you Season Ticket holders that are complaining are probably most of the ones that bought season tickets just so they would get seats for the Memorial Cup. Right now the Pats are going through Rough Times just like teams do in the NHL but it won't stay like that forever they will bounce back some but probably not enough to be a Memorial Cup contender unless they make some very big moves in the near future. To the Anon regarding Saskatoon small crowds, where have you been? It has been like that for years in Saskatoon , the only time crowds get bigger and better are when the team is winning far more than when they are losing . Just check your stats on every WHL game every night and you will see what I mean. Regina is showing big crowds every home game because of the Season tickets that they have sold NOT how many are actually there . Just remember it isn't only Regina that does this they all do it. Be patient some wins will come but don't expect them to be as good as last year because it is not close to being the same team.

THIS HAS JUST BEEN ANNOUNCED ON TSN::::
Regina Pats defenceman Josh Mahura, who was cut by Team Canada on Friday, will be rejoining the group for pre-tournament games this week. Dante Fabbro is dealing with a lower-body injury.

I actually feel bad for the players. Imagine being a teen and deal with this kind of backlash.

Knew it would be hard to repeat last season's success, especially with all the talent that we lost due to graduations. But it has been a larger drop off than expected by the team. Twelve losses all last year and by Christmas we have sixteen and counting. This team is in major trouble, and it will take a miracle for them to be a competitive team come May. How many teams will actually help the Pats knowing they can have a weak opponent during the Mem Cup and make it an easier road to at least a semi final berth that week.

Looks like two months of practice to get to play three games, four if they can actually win a round robin game unless they happen to pull a rabbit out of a hat and somehow string a few wins together and win a tainted Cup. This 100th year maybe a sad, forgettable one instead of a memorable one. Might have to hope Moose Jaw makes its all the way so I can gouge their fans when selling my expensive Mem Cup tickets.

Breaking news Mahura gone back to world juniors hours ago.

There was a lack of desire, poor talent etc etc etc. I don't blame the kids entirely. You can't treat these kids like pro players. These are teenagers. It's hard to get your teenager up to go to school, take out the garbage, or put his dirty clothes in the hamper. You need to be on them regularly if not all the time. A Junior hockey team player is no different. Being stoic on the bench with no sense of concern or urgency transfers to the players. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

This is the fourth year of this rebuild and things don't look good. We have yet to win a WHL Championship, Memorial Cup. Only one season where we've been above the .500 range. So the "one" season of 52 wins is enough to hang your hat on forever! The GM has the ability to move a player on that the coach doesn't see as a fit. If there are character issues then it's up the GM to address it, if it's a talent issue then ditto.., if its's a coaching issue the GM can change that, if it's a scouting issue the GM can change that.

We were all expecting a bit of a drop off but nobody seen this free fall coming. Waiting on Wagner and Jost probably put this rebuild way behind. It would have been easier and cheaper to fill holes 6-8 weeks ago. For the present this is a very sore situation that has really affected the fan base. Pride in the team is dropping, people leaving early and still the team hasn't got the message. It's incumbent on the GM to go out and deal whomever is needed to be moved, use whatever picks are there to be used, prospects etc to ice a quality club that we the fans deserve. anything less is cheating us.

To be a young player with the pats in the memorial cup would be a disaster. Scouts will want to see the best of the best, teams won't let up making it difficult for any young pat player to make any impression other than they are the players on a very poor team. This is not fair to them.

Now Pats without Steel and Mahura until Mid-January, hahahahaha Patsies are toast

Stupid penalties again tonight...but never any consequence...there is a way to get a message through its called sitting your butt on the bench...or have a view from the stands...

At this point it is better for the franchise to admit they are going to be pretty low on talent and concentrate on being super healthy while other teams go through a meat grinder of a playoffs to meet in the Memorial Cup. It is better than selling the 4 or 5 years of draft picks its going to take to trade you way to a upper tier team. Make a couple of character moves before the deadline & wrap your top guys in bubble wrap from mid Feb on.
