JONES ADDRESSES MEDIA ON GARBAGE BAG DAY FOR RIDERS

REGINA - Saskatchewan Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones held his post-season news conference on Monday at Mosaic Stadium and afterwards, his players cleaned out their lockers and headed home on Garbage Bag Day. The Riders' 2017 season ended on Sunday with a 25-21 last-minute loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Division Final at BMO Field.

Here are some notes:

1 - Although the club doubled its win total from 2016 to 2017 (5 wins to 10), Chris Jones said the end of this season doesn't sting any less than last year. He said the Riders' defense "didn't show up" on the Argos' final drive which lead to the winning touchdown. As far as the team's inability to counter Toronto's blitz-happy game plan on Sunday, Jones said he hadn't looked at the team's play on offense as closely yet. They said they all need to be better coming back next year.

2 - Jones was to address the team one final time immediately after the news conference and said he loves this group and they have as much character as any team he's had. He added that it's premature to list what deficiencies or roster holes they have heading into the off-season.

3 - The GM said there are "13 or so" pending free agents but personnel staff John Murphy, Jeremy O'Day and Mike Davis are working on that as we speak. He said he'd like to have the biggest majority of this year's team back in 2018.

4 - Regarding the non-call on the hit to QB Kevin Glenn in the first quarter leading to a pick six by Toronto's Terrance Plummer, Jones said he's been checking the rule book ever since and that definitely should've been a penalty. However he wanted to make it clear that the non-call wasn't the reason the Riders lost the game.

5 - Regarding the play of QB Kevin Glenn, Jones said everyone wants to point the finger of blame at Glenn but they wouldn't have won the Eastern Semifinal at Ottawa without him.

6 - Jones said, "We want Kevin Glenn back next year. He's a tremendous character guy. We'll sit down and discuss it."

7 - Jones revealed that they've had preliminary contract extension talks with QB Brandon Bridge. He said that it's a good sign that Bridge's agent approached the team with a proposal. Jones said Bridge likes it here, and likes his teammates and coaches.

8 - As far as the coaching staff goes, Jones expects all coaches to be back in 2018 but won't stand in the way of anyone advancing their career. Regarding himself, Jones said he "loves it here" and that he'll be meeting with President Craig Reynolds on Tuesday to discuss an extension.

9 - Regarding Duron Carter, Jones said he'll meet with Duron to discuss his plans for the future. He's scheduled to become a free agent in February and he'll garner plenty of interest from the NFL on both offense and defense.

10 - In conclusion, Jones said "It starts at the top. We didn't make enough plays down the stretch to advance and that's on me."

11 - Duron Carter addressed reporters and said it's always been his dream to play in the NFL. If an opportunity presents itself and it's the right situation, he'd be excited to explore it on either offense or defense.

12 - Glenn said he plans to be back in 2018 and expects to be the starter. Regarding the non-call for Roughing The Passer, KG smirked, "I've seen other QBs get that call. I'll leave it at that."

Most definitely the Riders didn't get it done yesterday and so close does not count at the end of a game. Win or go home so they go home. However I for one was prepared to take it in stride if they did not win yesterday. A Grey Cup experience for the team would have been so awesome but I don't believe they are quite ready to be a championship team. There are a few holes to fill next year and then look out. The rebuild in my opinion is 3/4 done. If the majority of the team buys into the system for another year our chances will be a whole lot better a year from now. Well done 2017 Riders, Coaches and Management. See you in the spring!

Please NO MORE time spent on Kevin Glenn. He constantly lays eggs in the post-season and did so again yesterday. How much more evidence do you need? 17 seasons and counting.

Please make a real investment in the QB position. Defence alone does not win championships, as we witnessed on Sunday.

Great season by the team. They gave us a lot to cheer about. The future looks bright for us next year.

Our D was stellar yesterday, gave the offence the ball on 3 turnovers and held them pretty well all night except that last drive. You cant ask the D to do much more than that.

Im really concerned at the fact Jones said Glenn will be back, I think thats going to be a really hard sell for the fans. Glenn played a great first half of the season but was not even close to that level after his injury. Pulled 7 out the last 9 games or something speaks volumes. Glenn played a great game last week in Ottawa and gave everyone a little hope, but in the end history repeated itself and Glenn was Glenn. 3 horrendous interceptions that led to 17 Argo points and thats your ball game. Kevin Glenn is just a very mentally soft athlete its just that simple. The bigger the game the worse he is. Ive never seen a player fold in big games time after time like this guy has. Its really remarkable. All 3 of those interceptions were just unbelievably bad decisions and even worse throws. Just brutal. There is a reason Glenn has never won a championship and he reminded everyone that yesterday. This team is on the rise and they will never get to that next level with Glenn at the helm. How many times does he have to prove that? Glenn is a great teammate and the consummate pro but he should never be a teams starting quarterback. If this team wants to take the next step in 2018 Glenn cannot be part of the equation.

Cannot believe how little crticism Jones is facing for his bungling of the qb situation. He didnt bring in qb's that were up to the task, and also managed them terribly, in game.

The offensive output from the Riders was PUTRID yesterday, save for one drive by Bridge. Unnaceptable and yet, Jones is more or less being praised. Any other year an offensive dud like that would get ripped apart around here.

On top of it all Sounds like we'll likely see more Kevin Glenn next year....sigh. The guy is a plug, please move on.

Bulletin for all Riderville buffoons;

Get it through your thick buffoon skulls, we have a starting qb, his name is... Mr. Kevin Glenn. If your not satisfied with that, go cheer for somebody else. Mr. Kevin Glenn is the Saskatchewan Roughriders starting qb till further notice!

Anyone blaming the Refs,is failing to recognize the Riders complete lack of offensive production for the majority of that football game. The refs did not decide that game, and the Glenn hit was marginal at best, call couldve gone either way. Suck it up already.

Nothing wrong with having Glenn back, but time for him to evolve.

I'm ok with having Glenn back, I expect his to be a back up mentoring role next year. He will be pushed just like every other quarterback.

If Tom Brady can still play at age 40, why not Glenn at 39? He has a good future as our team's starter.

Despite the East Division loss, Saskatchewan Roughriders Football is back to being a perenial powerhouse team/organization to be reckoned with ala the 1960's 70's teams who contended for the CFL Grey Cup every year. Thank you "Craig, Chris, John" and "all players" who contributed 2017.

Maybe it's time to have Glenn evolve as as some type of coach, but under no circumstances would any mentally competent manager want him back as a starter. They could have won in Ottawa with any type of competent QB. It was not big coup for Glenn or the team. Jones was very coy saying he wanted him back but fell far short of saying he wanted him back as the starter. At his age and limited success when it counted, he should just do everybody a favour and hang em up!

Hey Rod, it looks like Willie J has signed today!! According to 3downnation anyway, there is a full article saying so. Is that true!!
Also it seems Leader Post writer Vanstone is not impressed with Jones, again according to his article in the LP today. He said he was a failure and did not earn his money (I paraphrased)!! Thoughts?? Arent you and him buddies?

Riders get the consolation prize of being the (second) most improved team from last season. Unfortunately in the playoffs they met up with the winner in that category. Although if the game were played at Mosaic, maybe the outcome would've been different. But being on the upswing isn't so bad.

My end of the season evaluation. Mc adoo needs to be gone the o line coach needs to be gone. The o line of Campbell labatte Clark dyakowski is decent Coleman needs to be gone. The core group is good enough to provide protection if you have plays called with extra blocking once in awhile , don't abandon the run. It's crucial. Thank God the esks cut steel and Montreal cut johnson b.c. cut edam. Kacy Rodgers can't cover a dead dog let alone a receiver. Chris Jones still can't find new talent no matter how many mini camps he runs. The first one is next week. Don't sign him to a extension he is going nowhere in the in the cfl. Nobody else wants him. He I wants to win a nother grey cup here. That should open some doors in the ncaa and allow him to move back to the states and run the whole football operation from top to bottom. Because he can't trust anybody else to doing anything right. For example he is vp of football operations ,gm, head coach, defensive coordinator, head scout. Sounds like dictator. As Don Matthews said I guess I'm the head dick. Fits Jones to a tee.

Having KG as our starting QB this season was an excellent decision by CJ. He definitely had his “up and down” games but that is common in most QB’s. He is a class act and a definite mentor to our young, inexperienced pivots . The Riders did as well as they did this season with his work and experience and assistance from B.B. It would be great to see what Marquise Williams can offer the team........I hope he stays in Rider Nation and is helped along by Kevin. A great year in the trenches and we can only look forward to more of the same......and MORE.....in 2018!

Chris Jones got the job done. - he cut all the grey hairs who did a collective nothing with other teams. He does it he's a villain. Don Mathews and Wally Buono do it those guys are smart.

I wonder if Craig Reynolds knew they had a meeting scheduled to discuss an extension? B.C Lions job is open - I don't think this will be a negotiation so much as Chris Jones telling Craig Reynolds what he and his staff will be making. Craig Reynolds will say no - then it's on to B.C or the NFL.

There's only one way to go in Saskatchewan and that's down so I hope Chris Jones stays. It would not shock me in the least if he parlays this into a better job without the scrutiny.

He has proven he can and will win anywhere.

Sure let's give KG year 18 to choke again.

What the hell was with all those air horns on Sunday? They were annoying to say the least while watching the game on tv. I can't imagine what it was like for the players and coaches on the field. Aren't those things banned in stadiums? There is a special place in hell for those clowns wearing blue...

GIVE MR. CHRIS JONES A CONTRACT EXTENSION ASAP! HE DONE US GOOD! MORE TO COME! GREY CUP CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE HORIZON!

Anonymous said...

There's no where near the 'Rider Pride' there was a few years ago. Chris Jones has polarized the 'Rider Nation' and I'm sure Craig Reynolds has figured this out and I doubt there'll be an extension in the near future.

Jeez with your analogy on Kevin Glen then ... What; what about Mike Reilly the great EE QB. Who lead the league in passing and all that is great in the CFL. Didn’t get it done in 2016 out East. He didn’t get it done again this year in the West. Plus he didn’t get it done in 2013 and 2014. So the EE should probably move on past Mike as well. Right?
What took place in Toronto had far more to do with the coaching decisions than it did with Kevin Glen. One play dude, one defensive stop on 3rd and five and your not flapping your yap talking garbage. If it wasn’t for Kevin Glen the Riders never get close to 10-8. Nor do they beat Ottawa in Ottawa against Trevor Harris. This was Kevin’s 1st year as a starter on the Riders and look what he did. Wining is a 2way street. The coaches have to put the players in a position to excel. The OC did not do that for the Toronto game.

Typical loud mouth SK fan who has no idea about the QB position. Instead the ignorant Rider fan would rather run QBs out of town. Why not? It’s only been the Hicksville thing to do going back as far as anyone can remember. The sad part is each new generation of fan did not have to sit through the audition of 7 to 11 years of bad QB after another.
No QB would have excelled in Toronto with the OCs game plan. MacAdoo did not have the answers, couldn’t make proper adjustments and could not protect the QB with that Oline. So grow up and learn football before you start tarring and feathering QBs. This Province really does have a whole lot of backwoods people who have the same mentality as lynch mobs from the 17-18 hundreds. Stupidity at its finest. All you pea brain GMs who feel you know more than the coaches and GMs. Social media may be convenient. However it has brought the ugliness of man to the forefront. Everything is uglier since the inception of social media

Why stop there. Just fire everybody. If I may, your assessment for a team that improved from 5-13 to 10-8 and made it to one play away from being in the Grey Cup. You want to create uncertainty and disrespect through the coaching staff and the team itself.
Sorry but you are the one that should be gone. Your analogy is one for disaster. Not team building and team chemistry. Grow up a bit and learn before you start throwing people under the bus.
Man I’d hate to work in your world.

Comparing Glenn to Brady is like comparing an NFL QB to a high school QB. Brady is a multiple champion who always rises to the challenge in a big game. Brady will go down IN HISTORY as the best QB ever to play the game.

Glenn in the other hand is a proven choker when it comes to the big game. 5-9 in the post season. 6/13 for 87 yards and 3 picks on Sunday. He absolutely cost us an opportunity to win this game. Yes it’s true that he was a big part of getting us into the playoffs and restoring Rider Pride after 2.5 seasons of garbage. But every snap Glenn takes in 2018 is delaying the development of our next real starter. Glenn may get you into the playoffs. But he’s proven time and time again that he will NEVER win you a championship. That overthrow for a pick intended for Roosevelt after Willie Jefferson got us a turnover on Sunday was as awful an interception as you will ever see in a playoff game.

STATS TELL THE STORY

Glenn sucks. Season tickets since the 80's by the way.

Check glenns career playoff record and stats and let me know how you feel after doing a little homework.

Chris Jones is still under contract for next year. Why panic and give him an extension now? I would prefer to wait and see what the financial statements tell us. Jones appears to go through money like a drunken sailor. This is how the Riders continually end up paying huge salaries to coaches who are no longer here. I would also like to wait until perhaps midway through next season to see what their position in the standings is and whether the team is continuing to progress. At this point, the Riders were 10 and 8, which was only good enough for fourth in the west and a cross over into the playoffs. They did beat Ottawa in the playoffs; Ottawa, the youngest team in the league. The Riders themselves are the second oldest team in the league, which usually does not make a team sustainably successful. The Rider's QBs are some of the worst rated in the league. Basically, this year the Riders were "moderately successful ".

Gord +1. Definition of insanity doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Glenn's had 17 cracks at it. We all know Hufnagel is the best and he blew Glenn out after he choked in 2012. That was a 15-3 team I believe. Glenn should be a backup at best. Give the rock to BB, Adams and Williams who also has the tools and promise.

George Porge said...

Hufnagel didn't "blow Glenn out" after the 2012 playoffs; Glenn remained in Calgary in 2013 and started all but five of games that season. Glenn was taken by Ottawa in the expansion draft because only one QB could be protected (Calgary decided to protect their young, unproven backup QB in that draft as Glenn was getting older and the other QB we had was always hurt).

A little ironic that two of the game changers in the East final were Shaun Lemon and Armanti Edwards, both were with the Riders. That just shows how good a talent evaluator Jones is. That really came back to bite Chris Jones.

I am looking forward to next year. It is nice to see that there will only be a few holes to fill and not a total rebuild. Congrats to coach Jones and his staff and players on a great year. We are going to be a force to reckon with next year!! For all you Glenn haters out there, he is a great mentor to those young quarterbacks and a proven leader in and out of the locker room. I still believe that his hand wasn’t 100 percent thus the poor throws in the final. Excited for what next year will bring.

Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Jones, Mr. Murphy!

Oh brother.

Edwards (American) was traded for Dyakowski (Canadian).

Often you will see teams trade from a position of strength (receivers) for a position of weakness (OL).

Does that clear that up for you troll

Anonymous said...

Jones is saying he wants Glenn back in case he doesn't land Franklin or Collaros. I assure you if he can get either one he will only bring Glenn back as a mentor and nothing else BUT he is smart to not say "We want Kevin back in case we don't get anyone better"

Anonymous said...

HAHAHA seriously? You care compare Glenn to Brady? Please turn off your laptop, drop the crack pipe and go away!
