UNIVERSAL COLLISION CENTRE RECAP: REDBLACKS 33 RIDERS 32

REGINA - The Ottawa Redblacks are heating up at the right time.

Quarterback Trevor Harris and the Ottawa Redblacks came-from-behind for an improbable 33-32 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night that earned the defending Grey Cup champions a playoff berth for the third consecutive year.

Harris marched the Redblacks to two late fourth quarter touchdowns and Ryan Lindley's one-yard TD run with two seconds remaining secured the win.

"This league is about just getting into the dance and getting hot late,'' Harris said after his team improved to 7-9-1 and moved into first place in the East Division. "Tonight was not pretty. We didn't have our best offensively, defensively or on special teams. But we found a way to win.

"I'm sure Saskatchewan is sick right now because they outplayed us tonight.''

The Riders (8-7) had won six of their previous eight games after a dismal 2-4 start to the year.

Defensive back Ed Gainey said his team's performance late in the fourth quarter reminded him of the early stages of the season.

"We need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot,'' Gainey said. "This is just another episode of what we looked like at the beginning of the season. We keep getting penalties to keep drives going or penalties that back us up. We just have to do better.''

Saskatchewan assumed a 32-20 lead with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter. That's when Harris and company pushed back.

Harris hooked up with Greg Ellingson for an 11-yard touchdown with 3:09 remaining to cut the deficit to five.

The Ottawa defence forced a Saskatchewan punt on the ensuing possession, and Harris repeated his previous drive.

Three straight completions moved the ball to the Saskatchewan nine-yard line. Harris looked again for Ellingson deep, but Gainey was flagged for pass interference and the ball moved to the one-yard line to set up Lindley's score.

"We had the game right where we wanted it,'' Gainey said. "We just couldn't find a way to execute at the end of the game. They kept fighting, kept coming at us and eventually came out victorious.''

Harris completed 17-of-33 pass attempts for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He was without the services of Brad Sinopoli, while Ellingson - the league's leading receiver - was limited to just two catches for 13 yards.

Still, Harris was proud of the character his teammates showed on the road.

"It doesn't bother us where we play,'' Harris said. "We're a tight-knit group and I think we're getting better at the right time and hopefully we can go into the playoffs on a great note.''

On the flipside, Kevin Glenn responded with a solid performance after getting pulled from the previous game. Glenn threw for 387 yards on 29-for-39 pass attempts. Duron Carter enjoyed a monster performance with 11 catches for 231 yards.

With the loss, the Riders failed to clinch a playoff berth. Their magic number to earn a playoff spot is "1".

Now, they'll travel to Calgary next week with hopes of a road win over a team they're winless against this season.

"We're very frustrated. We get into situations like this that are supposed to propel us higher in the standings and we just need to take advantage of it,'' Gainey said. "We need to keep fighting.''

Tyler Crapigna kicked six field goals for Saskatchewan.

CHRIS JONES POSTGAME COMMENTS

- When you make enough mistakes to leave people in the game, have to kick field goals, take penalties to extend their drives, and leave their offense on the field, situationally we have to be better.

- Did our players think they had it won? You'd have to ask them.

- You watched the game. You tell me how it slipped away. We get a turnover with five minutes to go and the game's probably over. But we take a penalty, and then can't cover in man coverage. That's why we lost the game.

Pathetic……………….

Riders choked on their own press clippings this week.

questionable offensive play calling when the Riders got into the red zone.

Defence played too lax on Ottawa's last 2 drives

Playoff teams who exit early have these types of issues

I'm so stoked having Kevin Glenn leading drives for field goals.

Anonymous said...

Riders won't even make the playoffs with Glenn throwing interceptions like he's done his whole career.

Anonymous said...

Jones is riding an old, worn out horse because his ego is bigger than his brains. If I was Bridge, I'd bolt next year and Jones can ride Glenn again in 2018. Franklin ain't leaving Edm.

Oh boy .. haven't seen the replay yet but on the pick six I swore I saw holly WIDE open nearby for an eternity. . And the pick in the end zone. . Ugh like the worst possible picks spoiled a good performance by Glenn .. that and costly costly penalties. I thought we were the better team shooting ourselves in the foot time and again. They got what thy deserved and hope they get er together. The sun will rise tomorrow but that one stings.

Outcoached again!

RIDERS CHOKE!!!! Fire Jones!!?!

Anonymous said...

Pretty clear this team is prepared to live and die with Glenn throwing the interceptions into the playoffs. Good luck with that. Bridge is crap. All he does is throw darts and TD's. Best trade him and sign Glenn to a long term.

Anonymous said...

Rebuild complete?

Anonymous said...

Rider futility right up there with Hamilton.

ggopher said...

The interceptions were not necessarily Glenn's fault. On the pick for a TD, the receiver wasn't even going for the ball. And in the endzone it was probably a wrong route. There is a lot more to it then just the stats. Glenn had a great game today.

Too many field goals. left too many points on field. Blowing 12 point lead with 5 min left inexcusable. killer penalties on Ottawa drive. Caught napping on fake punt. Riders could have buried them in first half.Pathetic choke......nothing more to say.

Keep up the mortal kombat celebrations after every catch. Very stampederish. Yuck.

Glen throws like an old man. Takes too long and has a bad rainbow to his passes. Let's give the young blood Air Canada bridge a good shot.

Rocker said...

Are you serious, fire Jones makes know sense, we gave one away but we also stole one in Ottawa. That's the way it goes sometimes. We just need to score touchdowns instead of 6 field goals

Anonymous said...

Glad they lost. If u don't think it's better that the head to the playoffs through the east your delusional

Anonymous said...

Like rats off a sinking ship the Rider "faithful" will be jumping off the bandwagon after this one. Riders proved who they were tonight while another team showed how winners put games away

Anonymous said...

The same things that hurt the team early are surfacing once again. Mistakes, penalties, poor defence. However the biggest reason the team failed is because Jones continues to ride a dead horse. If he had checked out Glenn's history of performance, winning and championships; it would be there for him to see. When you are not efficient in the red zone and throw picks pic 6's as a part of your repertoire, you going to lose more times than not when the chips are down. Glenn has never got it done and never will but Jones's ego is too big to admit it. No team has ever gone anywhere under Glenn and never will. The poor defence under a defensive guru is a little more than puzzling. Team and management let the fans down and should hand their heads in shame. What happened out there was shameful.

Anonymous said...

Even with Duran Carter catching passes, it's boring watching Kevin Glenn.

Anonymous said...

Best not hope to get in through the crossover in the east over going to Winnipeg.

Anonymous said...

Wow one game barely lost and all the idiots work their computers from their parents basements. It's only one loss and it would be an easier route to the Grey Cup game through the east so what is the problem? Take a breath and realize the sky is not falling. And why are you blaming Jones for everything?

Anonymous said...

Now the riders are in 4th place bring on the excuses now?

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, that’s what Kevin glen does the most in these games, maybe that’s why he plays for $200,000 a year. Pick 6, too many drives for field goals.

Anonymous said...

Good lesson for the Riders to learn from. If one of the field goals is a TD, they are 9 and 6...Not the first team to blow a lead and won't be the last.. They still control their own destiny. No worries. This humbling experience will help them in the playoffs..

Scott Thompson said...

The d blew it, not Jones.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, it's always the coaches fault. This loss is on the players. If they do their jobs the Riders win.

Anonymous said...

Give credit to Harris in the last 5 minutes. He was throwing darts. Pin point accuracy but then again he had time to have a coffee the D was so laid back. Why not try the "prevent D"? Oh wait that is the 3 man rush with DB's who can't cover man. No wonder if the QB has 15 seconds to find an open receiver.....BLITZ occasionally Hello Jones.

Hope this is a wake up call. Keep the pressure on when you are leading!! One more thing. How can the run game be mildly successful when every run play starts 7 yards deep from the shotgun. Shotgun draw is the only running play? How about the old fashioned way? You remember QB under centre with 2 backs in the I formation.Nobody uses that anymore so Defenses don't know how to line up,etc. Ya I know I am old.

Anonymous said...

Year 2 of rebuild and playoff bound but typical rider fans want to win every game by 50 points and the grey cup. All you glen haters only have 3 more games and playoffs to enjoy his play. Just enjoy the game because at the end of the day it's just a game.

Anonymous said...

Jones ego is way too stubborn to put in Bridge. He would have had to eat his words about Kevin the worn out qb is the starter bull crap. Glenn has thrown the untimely interception his whole career. To listen him wane on in the media like he's got a boatload of championships is sickening. He was given prime field position off turnovers and kick returns and thinks he can bury Ottawa with field goals and pick sixes.

Anonymous said...

THAT WAS A DAMN GOOD GAME DESPITE THE LOSS. CAN'T WIN EM ALL, A WIN COMING UP NEXT GAME.

GO ROUGHRIDERS!

Anonymous said...

I hope the team feels the same way we feel this morning. Losing the game the way we did is hard to get over but maybe a wake up call is in order. There were entertaining points in the game for sure and tons of potential for big plays but miscues and penalties just keep happening. The team has grown a lot since the beginning of the season but like Chris Jones said post game, this loss is no different than game 1 against Montreal. We are a good team but not good enough to play 60 full minutes of football. Unless this team plays to their full potential the rest of the way we are not going anywhere. Perhaps the most disappointing loss of the season in my opinion, but there are three games left to correct the mistakes and get into the playoffs. It starts next week with Calgary. They are winning by waiting for teams to make mistakes then capitalizing on them, which is what Ottawa did to us. They are good but can be beat. Hamilton came so close. What a great motivation that can be for the Riders to bounce back and beat The #1 team. Not saying it'll be easy but they can do it, just depends which Rider team shows up for the game.

Anonymous said...

Omg the Riders let them off but there was also a number of key calls by the referees that were complete garbage...and that last pass interference must of been a ghost because we were right there and it was obviously a gift...the referees should be over ridden in a review or you need to allow challenges all the way to zero seconds...alllowing the bitches to decide outcomes instead of the players performance is crap

Anonymous said...

Kevin Glenn is Henry Burris a year ago. Struggling at times, but still able to manage games for the most part. Two qbs earn the coaches vote of confidance and the wins begin to happen. Given the chance, Kevin Glenn's veteran presence will be the difference come playoff time. It worked for Henry last year.

Terrific game, great job Riders

Anonymous said...

So many coaches on this site. Chris Jones has to be looking over his shoulder. We stole one in Ottawa, they returned the favour in Regina.

Anonymous said...

Why is Jones billed as a 'defensive guru'?

Anonymous said...

Glenn is not Burris. Not even close. Glenn is now 100-102 as a starter. Burris is 277-229 with 3 Grey Cups.

Playing well between the 20 yard lines does not win games. Bridge goes in, all of a sudden we have a run game with not only him but our RBs too. The defence has to respect the rush. They don’t with Glenn in.

At the end of the day, Jones has to make some tough decisions regarding his QB. Yes the defence choked at the end. But when you hold the ball for 38 mins and come away with 6 FGs and 2 of those from the 6 and 9 yard lines, that’s on the offence.

We are going nowhere with Glenn. He’s stunk since the Banjo Bowl. Everyone but our arrogant head coach can see it. Everyone has cut or traded Kevin Glenn. What we saw from him last night is what I expected to see from him all season.

Anonymous said...

Because hes in charge of everything. He has four job titles.

Anonymous said...

None of the field goals were touchdowns. Field goals are worth three points. Touchdowns are worth six.

Anonymous said...

Who is the defensive coordinator?

Anonymous said...

The buck stops with Jones. He wants to be in charge of everything, he has to be accountable for everything.

Anonymous said...

Camt wait until glenn is gone. Win or lose, its boring to watch.

Anonymous said...

Jones has hitched his wagon to Glenn come hell or 6 field goals. Bye Bye 2017.

Anonymous said...

The Daily coordinator calls the scheme. It's up to the players to execute the scheme. The PLAYERS failed.

Anonymous said...

The defending grey cup champs showed up last night. Riders made too many mistakes on offense, defense, and special teams to win. Ottawa also won the coaching battle in this one. Good reality check for the green and white all around. Richardson played pretty well. He and Bridge playing together may be a force to be reckoned with.

If Bridge put in that kind of can't score touchdowns kind of performance Jones would have him on the bench so fast.

lee said...

No worries, but i am wondering where Glenn was on that fake punt why was he not covering that receiver???

Anonymous said...

Be serious. Glen couldn't tackle a smurf.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Jeff Fairholm, I agree 100 percent about Duron Carter. The man is a phenomenal player but he is also a very self absorbed player at times. The choreographed celebrations are stupid and so are the exaggerated celebration after every catch. Do your job, be the phenomenal player you can be, run, catch the ball, set the ball down and go back to the huddle where the rest of the team is preparing for the next play. You don't need to chat up the other team after every series and you don't need to be in the middle of every skirmish. You are destined for great things if you keep focused on the big picture. Stop embarrassing your team.

Anonymous said...

Jones failed to call the rigjt scheme.

Anonymous said...

In the end we lost a game we should have won..
After winning two weeks ago.a game we likely shouldn't have.

To me.the loss is actually two pass plays called from the 6. Run and kill time.

That said... if we score a td we r nlt having this talk.

In 89 ane 07 we had devastating losses and used it to build.as a team and win the grey cup...

Here is hoping

Lewis Grant said...

The INTs were probably not Glenn's fault.

At $200K we are getting excellent value for Glenn. Most starters in the league are twice that. Glenn's stats are in the same range as Ray, Reilly, BLM - only Nichols and Lulay are clearly better.

I'm cheering for Bridge as much as anybody, but I also want to win games. Glenn is proven. He may not be a star but he can manage the game. Is than any worse than Nealon Greene, Kerry Joseph, Darian Durant?

We went 2 for 3 in the Ottawa/Toronto games, which is about what we deserved. This team is good not great, which is better than I was expecting at this point.

Anonymous said...

All riders had to do with that last drive is pound the ball and take time off the clock. But our idiotic offensive coach decides to throw 2 incompletions and then we have to punt. Ottawa had no time outs and we could have at least run time off the clock. A lot of blame on coaching. Jones even said he should have changed plays to a run.

Anonymous said...

The OC is Steven McAdoo, he calls the plays. He hates the running game.

FIRE JONES..................NOW!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

The first thing the Riders have to do is claim Mosiac Stadium as theirs. For Pete's sake they've lost three games there. With the crowd noise taking away audibles for the visitors and also causing offside penalties the Riders should never lose at home. It's supposed to be an advantage.

Anonymous said...

If there ever was a game that symbolize the saying, "Stats are for losers.", this was the game. Time of Possession, Passing Yardage, Carter's receiving, no question who you think would win. But I guess a pick six, too many field goals, and some bad play calls will cost you. Probably should not have won the game in Ottawa, but we should have won this one.

And I am a Kevin Glenn fan, but you do see why he hasn't been able to win a Grey Cup. Good statistics, but doesn't seem to be able to rise to the next level of leading a team when it really counts enough times. It is win one, lose one. That sounds moderately successful.

And this o line is very mediocre or moderately successful. They can't seem to run block very well.

As Jauch strap Clime stated on TSN. The Riders need to lose a few games. Then they can sneak in through the East.
They have already proved that they can win in Toronto and Ottawa. So why not?? In the West Winnipeg is going to look after things at home with the help of their fans. Then Calgary is going to dispose of Winnipeg.
Come the play offs. If SK gies through the East. The Riders could travel to Ottawa. Then stay their for the East semi, the East final and then stun Bo the loud mouth Twitter Ho in the 2017 Grey Cup. We all get to watch the spoiled Texas Ginger point his finger at the players around himself for losing their composure and the game to the Jolly Green Giants.
Then the team can come back to SK to show off the 2017 Grey Cup. Just before the majority head South of the 49th Parallel. Going home as the 2017 CFL Champions.
A Movie already written. Just needing dedicated participants (new actors) willing to sacrifice “anything” (dignity and all) to make it on the big screen.

In all fairness, the riders have improved vastly this year, they need a running back , back up. And I would like to see bridge play more as he’s starting to show more, perhaps they should split playing time as glen moves over to take more of a support role ???
