ROB BAGG: "IT'S GONNA BE A LONG DAY FOR ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS"

Rob Bagg on Wednesday
48 hours prior to Darian Durant's first return to Saskatchewan as a member of the Montreal Alouettes, the amp was already building for "The Return of Darian".

Rider fans were talking about it as early as Monday, and news media outlets are ramping up their coverage as kickoff nears.

However as far as the Saskatchewan Roughriders are concerned, they're planning a rude welcome for Durant and the Alouettes as Saskatchewan looks for its 10th win of the season.

"It's not like I'm game planning for (former Rider greats)," offered veteran receiver Rob Bagg on Wednesday. "I have full trust that my defense is going to show up. Unfortunately I think it's gonna be a long day for one of my best friends."

Durant has already been tabbed as the starting quarterback for the 3-13 Alouettes for Friday's game (7:30 pm, TSN, 620 CKRM Rider Network). The Riders feel the franchise great will be given his proper due prior to kickoff.

"He was a very good player for a long time for this organization," Riders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones said on Wednesday. "He did a lot of good things. Regardless of who they play at quarterback, we're just gonna line up and play good football."

As far as both sides seem to be concerned, the tenous nature of Durant's departure last January seems to be water under the bridge 10 months later.

"Times have changed but certainly while he was here, I think he'll be looked upon as a big part of our success in the 2000s and beyond," Bagg continued. "I think he'll be greeted appropriately but I think he'll turn into a visitor by the second series."

One of Durant's closest friends is veteran Rider receiver Chris Getzlaf. While Getzlaf will remain on the practice roster for Friday's game, he knows Durant will be excited for his return to Regina.

"I think he's looking forward to it," Getzlaf said. "He's a legend here. There's no doubt about it. The career that he had in Saskatchewan is nothing short of amazing. I'm sure he's looking forward to the chance to play in this beautiful new facility."

But, still, the Riders don't feel the need to roll out the welcome mat. The focus this week has been on dominating the Alouettes, and not getting caught in a "trap game"

"In pro football, anyone can win on any given day," Rob Bagg revealed. "I've always believed that. In 2011, Winnipeg had a great season but we beat them twice that year. If you don't prepare and you don't take people seriously - everybody has talent at this level - you need to prepare properly."

NOTES: Chris Jones announced on Wednesday that running back Cameron Marshall, receiver Naaman Roosevelt and linebacker Sam Eguavoen will all miss this game due to injury ... Jones maintained that Duron Carter will see action on both offense and defense in this game.

Just hoping the crowd makes lots of noise every time DD is on the field. One round of ovation, then multiple rounds of whatever so he can't hear a thing. Riders need to win so I hope they take it serious.

It will be fun to have Darian back in town, wish the best for him.

So Chris Jones has toned down his diatribe.

"He was a very good player for a long time for this organization," Riders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones said.

It seems phony, being cordial doesn't suit Jones and it hasn't induced me to like him any more than I never did.

Hey Roddy, I know you will be at the final farewell, bring down the walls at old Mosaic on Friday at 1:00 pm. I think they are doing some mini implosions or something like that.....but the 1:00 pm event is actually a perfect time of day for Darian Durant to also show up to say goodbye to the old stadium. Its not far from his hotel and that time of day is likely rest time before going to the new stadium so if you see DD perhaps invite him out. That would be pretty cool don't ya think??

You are no Rider fan .. hit & run ...sheesh ..

"Diatribe" sounds to me more like "telling it how it is". How could you not agree that Durant was "a very good player for a long time"?? He won us a Grey Cup for crying out loud. Since then, he has been "average at best" and is trending in a downward spiral. Diatribe I think not...what a phony you are anonymous, signed anonymous

Nobody cares whether you like Coach Jones or not. Nobody.

"Nobody cares whether you like Coach Jones or not. Nobody."

The bean counter cares.
For a decade I probably averaged $400 in the Rider Store besides game tickets. There was lots of 'green' under our Christmas tree.
I still follow and pull for the Riders but since Chris Jones hit town I haven't spent 5 cents in the store.

Don't you mean Mr.Jones...get a grip bahahaha

I care, very much. I respect Durant. He was very good for the Rider franchise. Jones has split the Rider fans into those that support him and those that don't.

I agree ..Coach Jones had No Love for Durant. Its 2 faced for him to even comment in my opinion.

Who is nobody? I don't care for coach Jones either...never will. I have always been a Roughie fan...since back to pre 1966... but not a coach Jones fan.

I don't think the Rider organization is missing your 400 dollars you spend in the Rider Store. LOL
I will make up for it....

It's easy to get caught up in not liking someone new running the Riders. Especially when he unceremoniously dumps the 2 most favourite players. One on offence and one on defence. On top of that completely ignores the camp of a Canadian and Regina born receiver looking to resign. Then the new Coach gets fined not once, not twice but 3 times in his 1st year.
After an ugly 5 win season negotiations go awry with the starting QB and he trades the QB away the beginning of the Calender year. Then gets fined again the beginning of the 2nd year.
So all of that combined would make a closed minded person despise the new coach and GM. Those who have chosen not to like Jones but have an open mind will listen and start to realize that Chris Jones is doing exactly what he was hired to do.
Upon taking over a 3-15 team in the off season of 2015-16 He quickly offered 2 players that were consuming 1/10th of a 45 man roster new contracts that would fall in line to build a wining team. They declined because they wanted more so they were released. Jones did not resign Getzlaf at the going rate of $170K because Chris was no longer worth that kind of money. Jones has proved he was right in all 3. Weston and Chick both signed for $80K less in Winnipeg and Hamilton. No body else was prepared to pay that kind of money. Which is why the Riders were 3-15. Again Chris GetzlF sat for a long time until the injured EE signed Getzlaf at a lot less. Then only played Chris in a medium roll last year and nothing this year.
Once all the Darian fans removed their loyalty glasses and witnessed his play in Montreal. Again Chris Jones was 110% dead on. Durant is not worth the money Durant thinks he worth.
The fines that came hard and fast from the commissioners office put a serious black mark on our league. Every other team has at one time or another done the exact same thing. Heck Austin brought in more players a few years before and we didn't hear a peep.
If I was a betting man I would bet that the actions of our commissioners office on the treatment of the SK Roughriders is probably one of the huge black marks that saw Oridge resign early this season. He was nothing more than a puppet for a few that had their own personal agendas.
Now with all of the crap that Chris Jones has had to endure from some of the media. Mainly CJME and the Regina & Saskatoon Newspapers)(owned by the same company and influenced from CJME) Plus 3 Down Nation's conspiracy Theroy writers and Arash Madani. It's a wonderful at all that Cheis Jones has his team looking at an 11 Win season.
If you can't open your mind to the possibilities right here and right now. Then you are only hurting yourself.
They say that an open mind is the essence of intellect. So I would suggest a closed mind is the opposite. Open your mind and see what Chris Jones has accomplished in so little time.
I have done that and I have changed my mind completely. As I was a complainer with no patience what so ever. Not anymore... Now I am a 110% believer in Chris Jones and his staff.
Chris Jones took a 4-14 Edmonton team and turned it around to 14-4 and won a Grey Cup in just his second year.
Chris Jones has taken a 3-15 Riders team and will probably be 11-7 in just over a week at seasons end.
If you don't like the man and his methods. How can you not like his record. I for one have always Loved the team and liked the players. Some fans get that backwards. They like the team and love the players. That my friends is a bad idea. Players and coaches will come and go but the [=S=] will live forever. Love your team and appreciate the talent.
Go Riders Go

I follow along very closely. Where did Coach Jones actually disrespect Darian? Or do people just not like when he said facts.

The Riders need to show up and play smash mouth football on Friday.Put DD into the turf early, that is if he even plays.
This is a important game for the riders to dominate all aspects of the game, get the W and move on.
Even though he isn't playing here anymore,DD is still flogging out his signed Rough Rider merchandise online,it is and always was about the $$$ folks.

3RD and 1 You are 100% correct. But remember a lot of people who add comments here are nothing but sh-t disturbers for other teams and out of province turds.

Anonymous said...

Of course the players want the money...do you go to work for something else.

Wow...must have some time on your hands or maybe thinking of publishing this lmao

I've already more than made up for $400 that you apparently won't spend.

Sheesh part time fans.

Somebody doesnt understand how business works. Are u gonna buy the lotto tickets im not buying this year?

The ONE thing Jones could have done to change my mind on him would have been to roll out the welcome matt for Darian - some sort of PK Subban style tribute beforw kickoff. Send him off qith respect, versus the gong show from the off season.

We'll see what happens, but I doubt anything like that will. Something like that shows class and has no impact on the game itself.

Anonymous said...

The ONLY thing that keeps me hating on Jones is not that he dumped Durant - but HOW he did it. The public insults were classless and unneceasary. Really upsetting to see DD's time here end that way.

Until Jones acknowledges that, Ill dislike him. The likelihood of Jones publically acknowledging he made mistakes in how he treated Durant is virtually nil. A classy and deliberiate tribute to DD prior to kickoff would go a long way.

How much u wanna bet, something like that Doesnt happen?

Anonymous said...

No one cares if you don't like Jones. $400? Seriously?

And for the first time in several years this team is fun to watch, and it is Jones' team.

Anonymous said...

You're out to lunch. Jones comments were unfair, classless and most importantly UNNECESSARY. If negotiations broke down, publically say "thanks for your service","were going in another direction" and move on. What you dont do is stomp your feet and start calling names because you didnt get your way.

Its that kind of behaviour that turn people off of Jones

It is interesting how season ticket holders are trying to dump tickets to the Montreal game. You can get cheap tickets for the game. Not as many people want to see Montreal and the 7:30 start doesn't help. A 1 or 2 pm game would help ticket sales for sure.

Trying to remove the top of the head can opener approach. Forceably opening up the close minded. Maybe if some people have it written right in front of them. They might get it... they might change their mind on Chris Jones and fall back in sports live with their team. Plus it pisses off the out of Province Trolls. Right, Donkey\White horse\ Cal Gary!!
If Rider fans can’t see what’s going on. Especially when it’s written and put right in front of them. Then they will remain closed minded and really miss out.

I agree DD should be brought on with a standing "O" because he did do some great things while leading the Riders to a Grey Cup. He did want to win badly every time he took the field and was prepared to do whatever needed to be done to accomplish that. Unfortunately the injuries took away what could have been comparable years of success for himself and the Team, and as a result Jones saw something in DD that few (fans especially) were willing to admit...DD's best years were behind him.
The result is where we are today...the Jones-built Team is starting to roll and Dressler, Chick, DD, etc. are almost forgotten. They brought us a lot of memories but we need to look forward to new memories brought by current/future players. The past is the past.
Go Riders!

To anon "Wow...must have some time on your hands" so do you if you read it. I agree with 3rd and 1 and as I have stated previously the crow I'm eating is delicious. Jones is not in a popularity contest and as he said about the player awards these are things voted on so again popularity. All he cares about is winning and that is a culture he has brought to the team.

Who cares about Durant's Past? Who cares about who or what Jones did, said or is doing. Let's just focus on what the Riders are doing, and will do in their next 2 games leading up to the playoffs. Players and Coaches seem to think that is the way to do it, so lets as Fans think the same way. What is done is done now let's look forward to WHAT HAS TO BE DONE.

Well said. Totally agree with most it. I am still not a huge fan of all if our coaches. I think our offensive coordinator could be doing a better job but can't complain about getting to the play offs. Go Riders go

Durant is the greatest q.b. We’ve ever. Had , these guys slamming him aren’t rider fans, they have to be fans from other teams trying to drag the riders down, no rider fan would talk about a super rider star like that. Welcome back Darian, Soon you will be coaching the riders

Well, it's a little off-putting that so many are making their complaints under the guise of "Anonymity" (is that a technical issue, or is it your own choice not to reveal your names?) I commend 3rd and 1 for not doing so, and also for the most cogent and admirable post that I have seen for a long time! I cannot fathom those who claim that Chris Jones "insulted" Darian, called him names, or otherwise personally attacked him. He spoke only of Darian's record in explaining part of the reason for his departure (the other part was the salary issue). But all that is past--and I would hope that all who attend in person tomorrow will--no matter what their current views are--take the high road and welcome Darian back cordially, before getting behind our current team!

Anonymous said...

I too will never support Chris Jones. I have always been a Rider supporter but we have never before had a coach who infuriated me with his treatment of several Rider players. He had the right to trade or cut anyone he wanted to but he did not have the right to do so with arrogance and ignorance. He has also been the most embarrassing coach ever with his statements and record setting fines. As long as Jones is here, I have eight other teams to cheer for.

Anonymous said...

Darian Durant's legacy will live a he77 of a lot longer than Chris Jones memories around here. Remember we're starting over next year, Kevin Glenn will be a year slower and free agent Brandon Bridge will be playing where he's wanted.

Anonymous said...

To Willie: class and respect and winning do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Adrian Leusink said...

No, Chris Jones hasn't toned down anything. I think what you're seeing is that he doesn't seem to dwell on what he said months ago when he makes tough decisions. He moves forward and just keeps building a playoff contender.

OldBaldGuy said...

Haters gonna hate. Jones did the things the Als did not do...that is weed outthe older more expensive players and built a base from the ground up. To those who refuse to show up or provide support, please provide me with trauma professionals to calm my grief.

Adrian Leusink said...

Jones said Durant had achieved moderate success here. 10 or so seasons and 1 Grey Cup win is moderately successful. Imagine where we would be right now if Jones said Durant was very successful and we need to pay him $500K.

Your position is akin to being mad at the dentist who resolved your horrible toothache - because his anaesthetic needle hurt a little bit.

I’m surprised bagg is still here I guess he’s Canadian though. Although he’s hardly used in the new offence. This team is all about imports. Canadians are 2nd class players. We’ll see where bridge ends up next year that will tell it all.
