RIDERS READY FOR MONTREAL, DURANT SPEAKS

REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes have held their day-before walkthroughs at Mosaic Stadium in advance of Friday's game (7:30 pm Sask Time, TSN, 620 Rider Radio Network). Here are some notes from their media sessions:

ALOUETTES QUARTERBACK DARIAN DURANT

- "I hope it's a nice warm reception for sure. I hope Rider Nation appreciates my time here, appreciates what I've done for this franchise. I really hope everyone stands and gives me a warm ovation because I think I deserve it. I wish the other guys that are on different teams could be here to receive it with me because I couldn't have done it without those guys. They know who they are. It should be nice. I'm expecting a nice one for sure."

- "I'm excited! I'm excited to play and get another opportunity to play football and compete against some old friends. I guess if you could put it into one word, that would be it."

- "I'm not nervous. I don't really get nervous anymore. Maybe butterflies. I'm just really excited to come out here and play, enjoy the atmosphere and experience it from a different point of view. I've never had to deal with the crowd noise here so I'm really excited to see what it will be."

ROUGHRIDERS HEAD COACH & GM CHRIS JONES

- Jones said they're not in any position to take the 3-13 Alouettes - or any team - for granted. He said his memory isn't great but he knows his team hasn't been perfect recently. Montreal has a lot of proud veteran players who will play as hard as they possibly can. John Bowman's tears over missing the playoffs weren't fake.

- Even though a playoff spot has been clinched, there's still plenty of work to do. They need to prepare for every scenario, and prepare for every team who will be in the playoffs because the match-ups haven't yet been set. In the weeks ahead, they'll prepare for their current opponent plus their future opponents.

- Darian Durant has been a very good player in this league for a long time and did great things for the Saskatchewan franchise. Other than that he'd prefer to not discuss the Durant situation any more because the trade was a long time ago. "Darian was a good player, no doubt," Jones said.

- Brandon Bridge is a dynamic player. He was the 7th-rated QB for the NFL Draft in his draft class, higher than any other current CFL quarterback. Jarious Jackson has been working with him to get the ball out of his hands quicker. He's missed some throws in situations where they really could've used completions. He's got work to do, but he's going to be a really good player.

- Jones wouldn't discuss re-signing Brandon Bridge in the off-season. The Riders are worried about the task at hand and will get to Bridge's contract situation when it's in the forefront.

- Regarding the demolition of Taylor Field on Friday, Jones said it was a fun place to go into and a tough place to play. He's got four or five great stories of barbs from Rider fans over the years, but none really stand out as #1.

ROUGHRIDERS QUARTERBACK KEVIN GLENN

- He's not sure why he wasn't good enough for Montreal. Everybody has an opinion on who they like and who they don't like. He's not the only player in CFL history who's been shown the door. Anthony Calvillo went through that in Las Vegas and Hamilton. It depends on the organization and who's coaching.

- Brandon Bridge is a very good quarterback. Glenn's seen a ton of growth out of him going back to their days together in Montreal. The maturity is evident, plus his efforts to get better at the things that he needs to get better at. He's a sponge.

- Bridge needs to get better at not just throwing the football, but managing the game and being a coach on the field. To get to the next level, he needs to show leadership in the locker room and get more consistent at making plays when the opportunities present themselves. He needs to get to a point where that's second nature. Arm strength gets young quarterbacks out of trouble but to have a long career, they need to use their head and not their feet. That all goes into being a great quarterback.

- Bridge can get better in doing interviews and the best way to do that is by doing more of them. Glenn will continue to coach him up in that area.

- There's a lot of excitement in the locker room now that a playoff spot has been clinched. It had been a long time since the Riders won a game in Calgary. You can see through social media that this is a very exciting time for everybody.

Thank you Chris Jones for not walking away from the Rider organization in sheer frustration. Who knows how things unfold from here on in but the excitement of watching Rider games is back and the anticipation to see what they can do each and every week is bringing fans back for sure. 2013 seems like so long ago and yet here we are about to head into playoffs where anything can happen for any team. Thank you.

So Roddy.. you ask3s on the cage the other day why some of us don't like DD. The first few comments speak volumes. "I hope Rider Nation appreciates my time here, appreciates what I've done for this franchise. I really hope everyone stands and gives me a warm ovation because I think I deserve it. "
That sums it up.....I DESERVE IT...bullshit you maybe think it but dont say it.

Here is Darian full of himself - who expects (or at least says it out loud) a standing ovation if you have earned it the fans will give it - don't request it. I was a Darian supporter and appreciate what he did for the Riders. Having said that he is a bit all about ME and it has shown often this year when things have gone off the rails in Montreal.

Jeez ... give the anti DD stuff a rest already! I have been a fan through many (MANY) QBs. Had the glory days with Ronnie and DD. Other than that it was almost 'one offs' here and there. Those two guys were dedicated to this team. Yet there are those who dissed both of them. They gave everything they had to give and deserve to be honored. Don't like this comment or that comment? Don't like those honest enough to say what they think? In pro sports I find that a rare treat but I guess some can't handle it.

I was going to give DD a standing ovation tomorrow, because i wanted to, not because, he requested it. Poor Doubles, now he totally lacks any confidence in a great player he was.

Anonymous said...

a "mediocre" ovation will suffice!

Anonymous said...

He never requested it, he simply said I hope they do and think he deserves it. Start throwing stones at him cause that is his opinion and how he feels, he won one of the four Grey Cups you guys have and kept you guys as a team to beat, sure not all by himself but he had a big part as most Qb's do. Have some respect for a guy that gave a lot to your team rather then be disrespectful...he has a right to his own thoughts and opinions even if you don't like them so get over it...hope the rest of Sask has more respect then the two bloggers up top, what a disgrace.

Yes so called fans who come on here and slam Darian are absolutely not rider fans. They are nothing but the negative nannies who are always on here slamming riders, probably from other teams trying to knock the franchise off kilter. Go home I hope rod blocks you out. Negative nanny

I’m sure Darian will be back here when jones is gone starting his coaching carreer

I find it disrespectful for him to go on how he deserves it! The fans know what he did for this organization and would of shown it. The right thing that he should of said would of been: I would be thrilled and appreciate the moment if the fans gave me a standing ovation. I'm here to play football and try to help my team win

Anonymous said...

Darian thinks he deserves it!!! WOW!! Who says that except a conceded SOB. I am a DD fan but his comments make me not want to stand and give him some respect. Boy oh boy he sure could have commented way better than that. Let the people dictate what respect he gets, saying it turns people off.

Give him a standing O, then when the game starts yell so loud he cant hear so we stomp the Als into the ground, that starting with Darian. Sorry, but the green and white is what I cheer for not an ex QB

Someone ban Mitchell Blair from asking stupid question after stupid question.

So much better to hear Duron Carter's name all over the place the last two weeks, bumping out Trump and giving Canadians a break.

DD will be back in the CFL next year. He might be a backup possibly but I'd be shocked if he didn't come back. His O-line was awful this year and receivers were very lame too

These guys slamming Darian won’t even be at the -game. They are all couch potatoes who sit at home and complain constantly about Darian. They won’t even go to the games. Jones will be long gone and Darian will be back to coach the riders.

________________________________

I didn't post anything previously but as a fan it is my right to slam DD and yes I still would be a Rider fan.

The poster who stated this forgets that not all fans have to kiss the butt of every Rider player past nd present to gain entrance into the Rider fan club. Never was a DD fan, his self-centered comments and actions over the past several years solidified that feeling. I cheer for the Riders team, not necessarily a particular player. I have respect for certain players on the Riders (and players on other teams) and how they go about playing the game (DD is not one of them).

None of the above makes me any less of a Rider fan, than the butt kisser who pasted the above comment.

Tomorrow lets all give DD the loudest booo that an opposing teams player deserves.

Great show today RP. Beats listening to those other idiots!

Listen to the daily scrums and you will see McCormick is the king of stupid questions. Just another reason why my LP subscription is no more.

You have no rights as a fan to do anything but cheer for the team, why do you think you have rights to bash someone just because you bought a ticket once, your so lame

>>His Oline was awful and receivers very lame<<
That’s been a common theme on teams where the QB is paid the kind of money Durant wants.
Last few years in SK after DD got his big money.
8-10
3-15
5-13
Montreal presently at 3-13... There seems to be a pattern.

After listening to how wound up Rod and Mitchell were on yesterday’s Sports Cage. Upset over dumb callers bitching on Durant’s past career here in SK. I get it as some were ridiculous. What the callers proved is that they truly know nothing about professional football. Especially stating that Darian didn’t groom a back up. Considering that has never been and will never be the job of the starting QB.
After everything that was said to point out how dumb SK fans can be. I want to suggest how dumb it was to set up Darian with the Question about what he expects for a welcome. All the work that was done to show and protect Darians dignity was flushed with this question. I’ve stuck up for DD so many times. Then his actions at the end of the 1st game in Montreal. When we as fans were still reeling in the missed field goal loss but 20 seconds earlier. To see his actions then listening to him about how the football Gods were basically on his side made my stomach turn. His timing on that was extremely poor. Now these comments... I hope everyone stands and gives me a warm ovation because I deserve it.... Man Darian you are your own worst enemy. Plus you can thank Mitchell Blair for setting you up to fall.
I would suggest that the question should have never been asked. It dosent matter what Darian thinks or expects. He is no longer affiliated with the Riders. It’s what the fans of the Riders feel like giving him. I wanted to give Darian a warm welcome. Now I don’t want too. I don’t want to give a cold welcome either. Do I am not going to do anything other than watch the competing QB take the field.
Next time you want to help out an ex player. Maybe think it through before you set them up! Just saying!

So what , Ron Lancaster never groomed a back up either, that statement means zero.

Anonymous said...

Durant back here coaching when he's done? NO THANKS! Did once ever see him helping his backups when he was hurt on the side lines? He was as far away from them as he could be. That shows he's not coach material.

I’m not into berating a player or booing someone who has left. But to tell someone they have no right to say Anything in a free Country just doesn’t make sense.
Whether you and I agree with it or not. It’s the entertainment business. Entertainment evokes emotions and often escalated peoples feelings. With that being said. They have every right to express their feelings out loud. Be it good or bad.

Anonymous said...

Haha - nice try
8-10: was 8-2 before he got injured
3-15: he played 1/2 of 1 game. This was Kevin Glenn's season.
5-13 : year 1 of Jones tear down.

Your "pattern" is suspect.

If you boo Durant, you embarrass the whole Rider nation. Get some class. Everyone still remembers that Ronnie was booed at Taylor Field. That embarrassment never goes away. Never. If you want to be the best fans in the world, as dome of you claim to be, you will give the QB that won the Grey Cup that everyone claims was the best day in Rider history his due. If you boo Durant, you make all of Rider Nation look like a bunch of classless, disrespectful idiots to the rest of the league. If you feel the need to boo him, do us all a favour and stay at home and boo him from your couch.

CFL Fan said...

If we boo Durant, we are booing an opponent's player. Many of us were never Durant fans, but we were always Rider fans-since the mid-60s in my case-so you have zero right to dictate terms to us. Durant was an overrated QB who played on a Rider TEAM. Never lose sight of that reality.

Anonymous said...

That is a crappy argument they booed Ronnie Lancaster while he was still a rider that is an absolutely ridiculous argument.

Anonymous said...

Your hypocrisy is so ridiculous. You can slam Chris Jones all you want but people can't criticize Durant. You're an absolute idiot If You Don't See how hypocritical your stand is.

Anonymous said...

Can I please have a standing ovation too??? Please, please pleeeeeeaase?? I`ve never had one before, but I think I really really deserve one. I really really hope everyone stands and gives me one.....why?? because I really really deserve one. It's all about me.

Anonymous said...

There is nothing suspect about those numbers. Those are the numbers of the last 3 years Durant was here. What ever the situation was. It was neverKevin Glens team or season. Spin Doctor
Those 3 years of Durants employment with a total of 16 wins. Cost the Riders 1.5 Million Dollars.

Anonymous said...

Nice that they didn't print the question that Darian was too answer.... social media at it's finest

Maybe the question was - Hey Darian do you think you will getting a standing ovation and do you think you deserve one?
Dumb Questions to begin with...
Just like the dumb question they asked Glenn - why did Montreal get rid of you - stupid its football - and then throwing Bridge under the bus with those comments for everyone to read. Instead of saying he is a rookie QB and needs work, fine tuning - lets just say all those things - that will do lots for his confidence - stupid...stupid all over the place in this article.

Not saying the answers are not the truth - but stupid questions lead to stupid answers and what a waste of time reading....

Honestly Jones had the best answers of all....

My thoughts FWIW

What does it matter that Ronnie was still a Rider when he was booed? He also won a Grey Cup here, one of only four. It still was a classless, arrogant act. Durant no longer plays heŕe so you only have to watch him play here once this year. There will be a lot of disappointed, embarrassed and angry people in Rider nation if this man is booed.

How many overly sensitive Trudeau supporters can there be?

What the hell does Trudeau have to do with this, other than more stupidity?
