RIDERS BACK TO WORK

OTTAWA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders held Day 1 of their work week on Tuesday afternoon at MNP Field at Carleton University in Ottawa. The team is staying in Eastern Canada between back-to-back games in Ottawa and Toronto.

Here are some notes:

1 - Running back Trent Richardson got most of the work with the first team offense and Head Coach & GM Chris Jones announced afterwards that the former NFL first round pick will make his CFL debut Saturday at Toronto. Jones said Richardson has shown his ability to be a quality back and isn't concerned about his blocking abilities. He said Richardson is a great "all-around" football player.

2 - Many Rider fans have asked how Richardson "looked" on Tuesday. It was tough to tell since the team wasn't in pads but he looks in shape and ready.

3 -The "Flyin' Hawaiian" Chad Owens saw work with the offense and also on punt returns but fans shouldn't read too much into that. This is the first week Owens is elligible to practice due to 6-game Injury List limitations so he's not a slam dunk to make his Rider debut against the Argos.

4 - The biggest reason for that is the numbers game. Incumbent returner Christion Jones is coming off his best game of the season - including a 97-yard punt return touchdown against the RedBlacks - and it's unlikely the Riders would de-activate him to make room for Owens.

Roosevelt
5 - Leading receiver Naaman Roosevelt ran with the 1's on offense after missing last week's game with a concussion. The Buffalo product told reporters that was the first concussion of his football career and he only felt affects of the hit for 24 hours afterwards (a headache).

6 - Roosevelt said he didn't feel the hit which knocked him out of the Riders Week 14 game by Calgary's Tunde Adeleke was dirty. Asked if he's concerned about possible CTE problems later in his life due to football, Roosevelt answered, "We're football players. We all are."

7 - Quarterback Kevin Glenn was back running the offense on Tuesday, as usual. Some fans felt some of Glenn's errant throws against Ottawa might've been due to a lingering hand injury but he said that was more due to the inclement conditions. Asked for a status update on his right hand, Glenn shrugged, "It is what it is."

8 - During his session with reporters, Chris Jones said he never once thought about pulling Kevin Glenn for Brandon Bridge in the Ottawa game despite trailing 17-0 in the third quarter.

9 - Jones said DE #99 A.C. Leonard suffered a lower body injury in the Ottawa game and has gone home to Regina to rehab. He was replaced by rookie Rakim Cox on Tuesday.

10 - It was a warm, sunny fall day in the nation's capital. It was 23 degrees Celsius with no wind. There were a dozen or so onlookers at Tuesday's practice at Carleton University. They included Ravens football players, students, and Rider fans from the area.

Saskatchewan will practice at Carleton on Wednesday (10:30 am) and Thursday (TBD) before bussing to Toronto Thursday evening. They'll hold a walk-through at Varsity Stadium at 11:00 am on Friday and it's open to the public.
Cameron Judge with Craig Dickenson

11 - Regarding the bizarre Twitter rant that rookie first round pick Cameron Judge went on Saturday night, Jones said Judge is rehabbing his shoulder injury in Los Angeles, living with his father. Jones spoke with the player, his agent and his family after his Twitter comments and said Judge is doing well and is expected to rejoin the team next week.

12 - Regarding 7-6 Saskatchewan's game against the 7-7 Argonauts Saturday in Toronto, Chris Jones had some fun with Argos Defensive Coordinator Corey Chamblin who oversees the CFL's #2 defense. Jones said he isn't surprised with what Chamblin's doing with Toronto's defense because "he's a very good coach".

Jones then smiled and said he's known Chamblin since he was 18 when he recruited him to Tennessee Tech. "He's a big spoiled kid," Jones chuckled. "His Mama spoiled him when he was young."

Are you sure Jones was joking about Chamblin's mother spoiling him?

The new Ottawa [formerly Sk] Roughriders practice on Parliment Hill, kool! Now if only they would hiphenate to Rough Riders.

Anonymous said...

Only the riders and their fans make a big deal about practising on parliment hill all other real football teams dont care about those little mickey mouse things but because its the riders its a big deal

Anonymous said...

This article has nothing to do with parliament hill practise. It seems you two guys are obsessed with it and are the ones who bring it up. Jealous much?

Anonymous said...

Jealous? Of the Riders? Hahaha that's so laughable. Riders are the Worst franchise in the CFL with the worst fans. Dream on lol

Anonymous said...

After seeing that ugly performance in Ottawa last week, one surely wishes that Ottawa would have won that game. Am I wrong??

Anonymous said...

If you aren't jealous why do you read a rider based blog and then comment on things rider fans discuss and rant about not caring about something like practice on the hill but still care enough to read it and comment. What's the matter nobody cares about your team whoever they are. I don't even know if other teams have blogs dedicated to them I doubt it haha. Now that's laughable.

Again showing that Rider ignorance and arrogance. Of course other teams have blogs, what kind of asinine comment is that? I read this space to see what crackpot theories and other self absorbed bs the homer Rod comes up with. Plus never said I was the same anon, just another incorrect assumption by Rider fans...laughable just like their team

It is because no matter what the article is on any given website the riders fans ALWAYS have to put in their 2 cents worth even though the article has nothing to do with the CFL team who has the fewest Grey Cups even though they been around over 100 plus years .Even though I have live here my entire life I will NEVER cheer for this so called team.

Anonymous said...

Oh their probably stunned red and white fans. Dumbfounded why they can’t get the same support, we do. They have to come on your web, because no bother teams give a rats as.... about their own teams fans.

Anonymous said...

What's laughable is that the riders sell more merchandise then the other eight teams put together hahaha. That's hilarious give yourselves a round of applause. We are arrogant because we can be. Why don't you spend more time supporting your team and don't worry about us.

Morgan said...

Tsk tsk tsk... So very jealous. Your name calling and inaccurate labelling tells us all we need to know.

Morgan said...

You just need to add a little white to your giddy up and you'll be accepted with open arms in riderville seeing as your already bright green with envy!

Anonymous said...

That's because the Riders sellout and put heir logo on every piece of cheap Chinese crap ever created. Anything to make a buck, guess the other teams have a little more respect for their logos but then again there's more history and success behind the other 8 not the stench of failure. I do support my team loud proud and talwaus there, my fandom isn't about how much $ I'm willing to spend, sometimes it's not always there for people. Rider fans will go on other teams boards and give their 2 cents but then get upset and whine when other teams fans come on theirs and give their 2 cents. Typical

Jealous of what being tied with the U of Toronto in grey cups when they haven't played for it in 70/80 years? Cheering for the most futile team in league history? Enlighten me.

Anonymous said...

Arrogant because we can be? Wow that comment sums you greenies up perfectly. I don't know how your heads fit through doors when they're that swelled for no reason. You have NOTHING to be arrogant about...you're Rider fans

Eskimos are still circling the drain to the west division basement. Montreal has always been flushed away. But I think anyone who knows football saw this coming. Edmonton lacks depth throughout their lineup and all it took to bury them were a few key injuries. The Als never had the talent to begin with. Durant is old and washed up and he was their best offensive player on the depth chart in week 1... You know you're in trouble when...

This so-called "Anonymous" person obviously has a BIG problem--exemplified not only by the trail of comments left...but also by the fact that he/she/them is hiding behind the 'Anonymous' moniker, rather than having the courage to use a real name.
"Typical"

Exactly Heather. Your words describe the out of Province troll very well.
Love the fact he tries to sell himself as a local. It would seem the term “Friendly Manitoba” is nothing more than a facade.

Morgan said...

You're as jealous as they come bud. You know your crap team will never even be a shell of what the riders and their fans are! Best team in the league with the best fans in the league! It feels oh so good to be the league's flagship franchise 😁

Anonymous said...

Wrong again greenie, definitely not from Manitoba...another swing and a miss from Saskatchewan. Ever get tired of being wrong/losing? especially when you play my Stamps hahaha 0-2

Morgan said...

Oh you cheer for the stamps... Great fans you guys have (haha). Enjoy your old crappy empty stadium! Also, enjoy the first place finishes without grey cups... You guys are notorious for it lol. Go Riders Go!!!

Anonymous said...

Still have more GC in the last 25 years then you have in your sad history haha at least we have sustained regular season success and GC success. Thanks for coming out greenie, another swing and a miss but then again you guys should be used to missing

Anonymous said...

Haha how did the grey cup go last year "choke" why can't your great quarterback win the big games. Grey cups you have on us but as far as fans go we have more fans in a small town of a hundred people then you do all together. What does winning do if nobody cares if you win or lose.

Anonymous said...

How sweet it will be to be the first team in cfl history to crossover to the east and take the cup from the beast side. And shut some of these jealous idiot haters up.
Riders are by far the team that gets the most attention for a good reason.

Anonymous said...

How exactly are you the flagship franchise? Because you slap your logo on everything and people buy it? Because you believe it in your deluded minds? Flagship franchises have rich and storied histories, not ones filled with futility such as the Riders. Experience more than you obscure province and you'll be enlightened I promise you

Morgan said...

Flagship franchise because the league wouldn't exist without us. Calgary is the least important team in the CFL. Worst fans in the league. Crappiest franchise in league history as well. Longtime losing tradition in cow town. Now go give your horse a bath you jealous loser!

Anonymous said...

Wouldn't Exist without you? Save the Rider telethons say otherwise bud. You just say Calgary is the crappiest since that's my team. If I had said I was from Edmonton or Winnipeg you'd say the Esks or BB we're the worst, that's why that doesn't sting at all ;). Look west good son and you'll see a true winner. Can't argue with results and nothin better than us in the last 25 years :)

Morgan said...

The telethons that were 3 decades ago? When the league was a financial mess without a proper salary cap in place. Since the cap was instated the riders have dominated. Suddenly you big city losers with deep pocketed owners couldn't buy cups anymore. Get down from your high horse. You look like a complete fool trying to argue with me! #owned

Anonymous said...

Really could've sworn there was a few in the late 90's. Actually I KNOW there was so don't make up facts to sound better. I hardly think I look like a fool, if anything I believe you're wearing that hat. Who does a little "#owned" and expects to be taken seriously lol. I hardly think I'm on the high horse, it's Rider fans that need to be taken back to reality (the reality your team just isn't that good). Thanks for the debate but I can clearly see there's no reasoning with you.

Anonymous said...

It's real easy to stand by a winner, the Rider's and there fans personify true heart and perseverance. When Calgary starts to slide, and they will start to slide, attendance will drop and the only sell outs will be when the Rider's show up and half the stadium is green. I'd be upset with the Rider's and their fans too, if their fans filled my stadium for home games.

The Rider's are money, home and away, check out the 2016 stats, highest home average, highest away average for attendance.

It's funny that the since the salary cap era started the Stamps and the Rider's have the same amount of Grey Cups and visits.

Keep pounding away on that brick wall though. You're making a fool of yourself on a public form. You've stepped into a place where you aren't welcome and started throwing blind digital punches with your keyboard. You're an embarrassment. Classic angry Albertan. Always looking for a fight and for a way to feel better about yourself. Let's go take a Wizz on some rider fans. How dare they stand by their team. I should go remind them they need to knock it off and should stop being so passionate so us un-passionate crappy fans don't feel so bad about ourselves. Don't worry you're from Alberta. You're the best at everything and Saskatchewan is the worst. Need me to stroke your ego some more you pathetic loser?
