CARTER TO START AT CORNER AGAINST STAMPS

Duron Carter on Wednesday

REGINA - Duron Carter is going to be very busy Friday night.

Head coach/GM Chris Jones said Wednesday that Carter will see action on both sides of the ball Friday night when Saskatchewan visit the Calgary Stampeders. Carter, the Roughriders' leading receiver, practised at cornerback with the starting defence Wednesday as well as with the second-team offence.

"He's going to play a bunch of football,'' Jones told reporters in Regina. "He's going to be a tired young man after this football game.

"Will he play every snap on offence? No. Will he play every defensive snap? No. But he's going to play a lot of football.''

Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell took to social media to warn Carter that he can expect a lot of action when he's on defence.

"Don't do it Duron.. you'll get 25 balls thrown at you,'' Mitchell tweeted.

Carter is Saskatchewan's receiving leader with 1,037 yards from 72 catches with eight TDs. It marks the first time in four CFL seasons Carter has cracked the 1,000-yard plateau.

But the six-foot-five, 205-pound Carter - whose father, Cris, is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame - is being pressed into duty on defence with defensive backs Sam Williams - who's listed on Saskatchewan's practice roster - Kacy Rodgers II and Chris Lyles all down. As well, veteran defensive back Otha Foster III is on the six-game injured list.

Carter has never started on defence but has seen action in the secondary. He played there in Saskatchewan's 41-8 win over the B.C. Lions on Aug. 13 as well as its 27-24 road win over the Toronto Argonauts on Oct. 7.

"He's been practising there all year,'' Jones said. "He's played in different games this year for us defensively.

"He's very instinctual and quite honestly I'm not sure he's a better corner than he is a receiver. We don't have anybody else to put in there. All of our guys are hurt.''

On Monday, Carter and Williams were involved in an altercation. There were reports a coach encouraged Carter and Williams to continue fighting and that once the melee ended that Carter and fellow receiver Bakari Grant - who tried to break things up - wouldn't play another game this season with the Riders and the club was making arrangements to fly them both out of Regina.

On Tuesday, Jones acknowledged an incident occurred between Carter and Williams but downplayed the significance of it. Jones wouldn't comment on a coach's reported involvement in the altercation or what, if any, discipline would come as a result.

Friday night's game is important for both teams.

Calgary (13-1-1) can clinch first in the West Division with a victory while Saskatchewan (8-6) could cement a playoff berth with a victory. The Stampeders are 2-0 this season versus the Riders and riding an 11-game win streak.

Calgary has been unbeatable at home of late, having won its last 17 straight games at McMahon Stadium. The Stampeders are also 7-0 within the West Division while Saskatchewan is 3-5.

"A lot of people have tried to figure that out,'' Jones said when asked how a team goes about beating Calgary. "You have to play good, solid football I know that.

"You've got to stop the run, you've got to force them into second-and-long situations, you've got to play good on special teams. You've got to go there and play all three phases at a very high level.''

Geez, Carter "getting off of Twitter to focus on a playoff run." is the FIRST mature thing he's done since he got here. After all, who started this whole sh*tstorm by tweeting "It was fun while it lasted... love y'all.''
And geez, I hope by "focus" he means that he'll stop all his immature antics on the field. Yapping at the opposing player/team, his "Invisible Woman from Fantastic 4" act/pose after any catch, leading off those ridiculous touchdown prances when he or a teammate scores a touchdown, etc etc.
I'll believe it when I see it, however, his ego and his mouth are too big.......so I'm not optimistic. He does have a lot of growing up to do.....

So Rider management cannot find, or bring in qualified defense secondary personnel to replace injured players?

You know everyone has a right to complain, but if you don't like the man, simple... focus on someone else. No one says you have to like what he does.

Simple fact he has a ton of talent. Does he make first down jesture's yup, but he can also back it up by making the first downs. He brings a flair to the game. This is "entertainment" You do not have to like it, you don't have to like him. Simple solution... follow someone else.

Personally I am looking forward to seeing him play both sides. Hey Dion Sanders (ever here of him), he was flashy, he was out spoken. He could back it up as well. He also played both ways....

Read between the lines. This is the undisclosed internal punishment that everyone was looking to hear of. If we can escape this game relatively healthy, we'll be in good position to roll Montreal and Edmonton and go through the East.

He's tall and fast, should have a good idea what a receiver is thinking and the patterns they run. It'll work out or it won't. Defence better get some good pressure on Bo!

Papa Cris Carter comes to Saskatchewan next season as a offense/qb part time consultant. Duron will be sure to behave. Duron_ a world class athlete you don't throw away or give away, bottom line. Lil Bo just wishes in jealously he had Duron Carter to throw to and he will get that chance this weekend in bunches. Watch out lil Bo weep, interceptions a coming. Duron Carter a phenom both sides of football in play.

Most REAL Rider fans were NOT looking for internal or any other punishment! We all want Carter to continue to star for the Riders. Also, nothing would be better than intercepting a few of BIG Mouth BO's passes. Now there is a really big mouth trouble maker but being a Stump, he gets away with it.

Maybe Sam Williams and Duron Carter are being punished. Sam doesn't get to play and Duron has to play Sam's role plus his own.

Wow if that was the punishment Anon #4 how does he get rewarded if he does great. Guess he'll be QB LOL. I doubt there is a player out there that doesn't look for more playing time and greater challenges.
As for flash etc, some never quit as per Milt on TSN. Doesn't mean they can't perform and personally I enjoy Carter 90% of the time. Aside from that he does great community work and the majority of fans love him because he responds to them.

Well if we can't beat Calgary at least really hurt them! Keep your head up Comish!

Got in a fight with the starting corner on Monday and takes his job on Wed.

It ain't bragging if you back it up.

Yes go carter , there’s only a few who are nasty, most of us like you.

I sure hope Friday night we witness Duron get a pick-six while on defense to go with a TD reception on offense. Such an accomplishment would be a very rare feat, almost up there with a Stampeder home loss!

Say what you want I think Jones is setting up to play the best he can. Wonder if we see Trent Richardson and Cameron Marshall in the same backfield. Would definitely mean Glenn gets back up blocking. With Denis going down and Clark coming in do we have enough O-line? Will St. John make the final lineup or do they go with an American O-lineman like Jarvis Harrison or Terran Vaughn. Still have room for another American either a DB or Receiver. Just throwing it out there going with the two American Running backs we could sit Greg Morris or Kienan Lafrance and play Chris Getzlaf and we all know what he has done for us against Calgary before. Waiting in anticipation for this weeks lineup. Carter as a corner gives us a lot of options. If he has an allstar game he has to go back to NFL. What a sad thing for us.

Where's the apology from Arash and who is his source?

Good luck. After the Stamps Durant & the Football Gods come to town. Yee Hah

This is not punishment.

You don't jeopardize your season to punish a player

Seriously?

Our 231 yard player is our best backup db?

I think jones is playing with Calgary and the fans and the media. What a waste of time.

I wonder what Junior Mertile is up to these days? Actually... I think I would stick with DC.

Should be fun watching him take on a pulling guard, a fullback or tackle a running back on a swing pass!! Just watch the stamps throw underneath him and make him tackle... Here comes Mess.

As much as I’ve done an about face and come to the side of respect for Chris Jones this year. I don’t like the idea of Carter playing both sides of the ball. It was ok in a pinch for part of the 4th Qtr. but not the whole game.
For one a player playing both ways depletes his energy much quicker. So not as energized means not as effective. The Riders need Carters big play on offence.
The idea that a professional football team has to use one of the leagues premier receivers to play corner looks like an unprepared team.
This isn’t High School were your talent level is not so deep to chose from. So you use some of your best athletes to play 2 ways. Besides no one in high school even notices that it’s taking place. Where as in pro sports it’s niticed big time and it looks juvenile. It’s things like this that continue to peg the CFL as no more than a low grade farm league. Even though that isn’t the case. Players like Ricky Williams, Cameron Wake, Jerrold Freeman and now Trent Richardson all realize the talent level in the CFL is much better than they ever anticipated. All of which didn’t have much respect for the CFL before hand but came to respect the League and the talent pool while playing here. Some even promote the CFL. Heard on the Spirts Cage yesterday that Cameron Wake wears BC Lions under clothing to remind himself how he was given an opportunity. Unfortunately the consensus with those who have never been associated with the league remember things like 2 teams having the same name in a 9 league team. Or one if the leagues premier receivers (Son of NFL legend Chris Carter) also plays corner. Which I’m sure Calgary is going to go after and they will expose his lack of time at that position.
What if Carter gets a season ending injury while playing corner? This is not very well thought out.

Concerned on several different levels

Those of us on the outside will never know what is going on inside a locker room. When you have guys from all over the US and Canada plus different ethnic and culturally backgrounds it would be unreasonable for everyone to get along. I would imagine that even on some of the Riders championship teams there were players that disliked other players.

In regards to Carter starting on the corner, that is a move that I am surprised at. On defense we have a player that coaches in the NFL thought was good enough to play corner in that league and if it was not due to injury odds are he would still be there. If you are wondering who I am talking, I am referring to Bouka, the Canadian DB that signed with the Riders a couple of months ago. He was with the Arizona Cardinals. To make things even better he is a Canadian. That provides the team more flexibility on the ratio.

Man I wish I was as positive as you guys. In case you haven’t noticed, Carter has not looked good as DB this year. Not to mention the stupidity of putting our best receiver on D which will subject him to embarrassment and injury against the best team in the league. I don’t understand the strategy by our coach. If they truly don’t have anyone to play due to injury, that’s on a John Murphy.

I hope it works out. I fully expect it won’t.

Hee hee! Haw haw! to the first anonymous poster, Carter's not imitating the Invisible Woman aka Sue Storm from the Fantastic 4 (good guess though). He's imitating a Street Fighter video game character. But yeah, I agree with you that it's pretty lame. One almost has to wonder if Cris Carter ever said "I've gotta have a LOOOOONNNGG talk with that boy!"

Anonymous said...

I see a bunch of you know it alls slagging Carter, and I will go out on a limb and say you're actually from another fanbase. Ask the kids, ill, handicapped, etc etc that he has selflessly given his time to what they think.

Go back to your armchairs.

Not many of you will remember the "old days" When Alan Ford played DB, running back/receiver and punted the ball. He played all 3 phases of the game. Of course the rosters were limited to around 32 to 36 players!

Anonymous said...

Why would he apologize. Jones did not refute anything that was reported. He only said he wont give details. Translation: it happened, as reported.

Anonymous said...

If Jones is just playing everyone and Carter doesn't really start at DB, this will be the best trolling in the history of trolling.

Whatever, it feels like this team is pretty tight from top to bottom. The skirmish was a football related one off. Exciting times in Riderville. Try and enjoy it.

I for one am loving it! We have a contender again with quite an interesting cast of characters. What's not to like? But yeah Carter tackling Messam on a swing pass? That I just gotta see.

Its great that he does that stuff. I commend him for it. He also has a history of conflict issues on the field and in the locker room,so we should all turn a blind eye to that because he's a good guy? This is what you get with Carter: great athleticism and lots of personality based distractions. Don't tell people to ignore the bad, just cause there's also good.
