10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR UNIVERSAL COLLISION CENTRE

1 - CARTER GATE: It's clear we'll never know all the details surrounding Monday's Rider practice fight between Duron Carter and Sam Williams. That's fine because it's "internal" but the team wants it made clear that Duron is NOT the bad guy in all this. There have been several reports that Carter has rubbed some of his teammates the wrong way but, hey, I know there were players on the Regina Pats who didn't care for Jordan Eberle back in the day. Meh. You can't please everybody.

2 - MORE ON CARTER: If you go by the adage, "Judge people by the way they treat you", then I have nothing but great things to say about Duron Carter. It's clear by watching him play that he's just out there having a blast. He's never been in trouble away from the field - in fact he's sensational in the community - so there's a lot here that simply doesn't add up. To this point he's been a tremendous addition to the football club.

3 - STILL MORE: TSN and Sportsnet have both reported that Monday's fight was either "encouraged" or "orchestrated" by the Rider coaching staff. I find that hard to believe and saw no evidence of it  And, frankly, if that were the case, then why not wait until Tuesday's closed practice where the tussle could've been staged behind locked gates? Again, a lot is not adding up but if this team needed a shake-up, they got it.

4 - "TEACHABLE MOMENTS": I love this new buzz word in sports for "mistakes". There were a lot of teachable moments in last week's 33-32 home loss to Ottawa but I saw a silver lining in it all. This team will NOT take its eye off the ball the rest of the way, and in the CFL Playoffs. Chris Jones seemed to see a letdown like this coming by telling his players, "Don't read your press clippings". But they did and just like we learned in 4H, you have to learn to do by doing. The best part about a mistake is the opportunity to try it again.

5 - BETTER SAFE: Rider fans were alarmed when they saw security personnel armed with assault rifles at Friday's game. That was a first for little ol' Saskatchewan. But rather than being afraid, that should make you feel SAFER! However it sucks that terrorism is now on our doorstep.

6 - WELCOME BACK GETZ: Having Chris Getzlaf back in the proper Green & White just feels right. Who knows how much gas he has left in the tank but he's appeared lightning fast in practice this week. His wisdom and talents may just be what the doctor ordered for the Riders during the stretch drive and playoffs. See: Jason Clermont and Geroy Simon.

7 - BRRRRRR: It was a chilly one at Friday's Rider game and Captain Obvious says it's going to get a whole lot colder. However it was pointed out that if the CFL is going to make the wise decision to avoid NFL Sundays in the fall then, late Friday and Saturday night games are going to be the consequence. So bundle up, and then enjoy the couch on Sundays. Clearly we can't have it both ways.

8 - VIVA LAS VEGAS: A guy named "Wolfy" asked me this week if I was surprised at the record-setting start by the Vegas Golden Knights out of the gate. Of course I had to say no, and you've read why over the past several weeks in this space. They look as fast as any team. An NHL scout told me recently that the VGK braintrust of McPhee, Gallant, et al have earned the right not to be questioned and now here they stand atop the Western Conference with 10 points. Now about those Oilers...

9 - GO PATS GO: The Regina Pats are 5-4-1 and host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday. (I'll have the TV call with Martin Smith and Darren Dupont on Access at 7 pm). The club is finding its way but, at this point, clearly isn't the special team that won 52 games last year. But they turn it on when they need to, and will be fine. As a side note, fans sure seem to love the 4:00 pm starts on Sunday because the arena was jammed for Sunday's 3-2 OT win over Edmonton. Whomever came up with that idea should take a bow.

10 - LOCALLY: The Regina Thunder visit the Saskatoon Hilltops in the PFC Final on Sunday in another chapter in their storied rivalry. The two clubs split the season series and there will be a huge contingent of Regina football fans headed to SMF Field for the clash ... Meanwhile the U of R Rams (4-2) host the Calgary Dinos on Saturday at 2:00 at Mosaic Stadium. With a playoff berth already clinched, Steve Bryce's club will be looking to fine tune against the top team in the conference.

Y'er welcome,
RP

With Duron Carter there are two ways you can look at it. Nick Saban has stated that mediocre people have a problem with high achievers. With the exception of Duron Carter and a few others this roster is chalked full of mediocre underachievers as their record indicates. Second if he draws unwanted attention to himself his Duron being Duron act can be taken as a modern day minstrel show which rubs people the wrong way.

He’s arguably one of the most athletically skilled receivers to play in the CFL. Does he give them a better chance to win when he plays vs not, yes. Then the rest doesn’t matter. If professional players are distracted by a little media attention then they should be on the team.

The bigger question of the week was, with the game on the line why throw the pass to anyone but Carter last weekend. He caught for over 200 yards put the ball in his hands. The guy steps his game up under pressure. One more first down wins that game give the ball to your best player.

Terrorism is more than on the doorstep the current baffoon in ottawa seems to want to throw open the doors and welcome them with open arms.

Imagine having guns make you feel safer...don't guns kill people? I remember when Aldag retired they gave him a hunting rifle wrapped in a Saskatchewan flag...when Aldag raised his arm the wind unraveled the flag exposing the rifle...the crowd went wild cheering...Thank God I don't live in a loonie bin like California...

What a stupid comment. Guns in the WRONG hands kill people while guns in the right hands prevent it.

Guns do not prevent anything unless in law enforcement hands!!!!!!!!!!

Roughriders have a real gift in a dynamic player and life force like Duron Carter. He is still young and will only get better as he matures. The CFL and TSN can use more entertaining personalities like his given the tough competition for the entertainment dollar these days. He has earned his way onto my list as favourite football player.

Hello! They are still guns! Are there bad guns and good guns? The vast majority of assaults are from people being stabbed here in Sask...are knives the problem or are the people the problem? Doh!

Tell that to Jews who lived in Nazi Germany.

Just a question for you Rod....in your interview with Arash Madani, he pretty much contradicted everything you said about Carter in this column. Why don't you push back on that a bit? For example, Arash spun the meeting that Jones apparently had with Cris Carter in Toronto into a negative....if you have seen such positive things about how Jones and Duron have been interacting, why didn't you state that?

You are a heck of a lot closer to the situation than Madani, so I don't know why you take his word as authoritative.

My take on all this is Hilltops will TOP Regina. Wheaties will down Patsies and Carter will score 2 touchdowns as the Riders defeat Calgary.

I keep a shotgun at the farm.....wife knows how to use it! Law enforcement is 40 minutes away!

Agreed! I thought Madani was creating a story out of nothing! The guy really is quite a drama queen!

Steve from Victoria, It is unfortunate that some in the media feel the need to dig for negativity in covering the CFL. Why can't they promote the great game that it is instead of looking for issues that are not important in the grand scheme. All this because of an altercation at a Rider football practise. One the headlines on the Sportsnet webpage was about an altercation between 2 Chicago Bulls player which resulted with one suffering a broken jaw after being punched by a team-mate. I would think given the number of professional sports teams in North America there are probably altercations on a daily basis, but they don't get the coverage that an altercation between Carter and Williams did. Shame on those in the media that feel it necessary to look for bad in people!

Only thing bigger than Carters ego is his mouth. Of course the Riders signed him, dumpster fires have to stick together. He has no class and this just fuels that arguement inspite of the "lipstick" this "professional" organization tries to thrown on the proverbial pig. You will get destroyed on Friday by a good football team. You can reply all you want and insult me but you know it's true. I welcome the peanut gallery's forthcoming attempt at trying to insult me. Know that I laugh almost as hard at that as I do for your team

Shoguns and hunting rifles are ok but there is no need for auto, semi auto, assault rifles and pistols. Go ahead and use your shotgun and see what happens. ( Colton Bushie)

this topic went off the rails fast.

How about just win...if you gotta have a disagreement with a co-worker, then do it, sort it out, and get back to work!

You are more likely to kill a family member than a murderous criminal with that shotgun. But yes police should be carrying assault rifles. They should be armed to the nines at all times.

When did players brawling in practise become such a big deal? From what I understand it happens in training camp every year. Duron Carter likes to yap and if some player on the team decided he'd heard enough yapping there were likely some punches thrown. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. Love the guy as a receiver but he could definitely irritate the heck out of people around him. Hopefully this is all behind them now.

Conspiracy theory ...

Tweet: That was fun while it lasted ... love yall.

A few hours later hes out with the RECEIVERS - seemingly unfazed when the world outside is going bananas.

Then at first sight of practice he's on defence. Could it be he was saying it was fun being a receiver?

Think about it. The Riders said all along the tweet was way overblown.

Do you really think Riders won't continue to use Carter as a receiver? Give your head a shake. At present he is our leading receiver and Jones is not an idiot. There is an immediate need for a corner and Duran already has some reps there which a new [player would not have
