10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR CAPITAL FORD QUICK LANE

1 - FAREWELL: It's fitting the Riders won Friday night on the same day the Grand Ol' Lady came down. No stadium in Canada has hosted more pro football games than Taylor Field but now she's just a memory. I was there Friday to pay my respects but thought the image of the grandstand toppling over was undignified. (Like an old man falling over on his face). I know it had to be done, but wish I hadn't looked.

2 - FAREWELL #2: The Riders always do it right and their video tribute to Darian Durant Friday was as unexpected as it was classy. They - to my recollection - have never done that before, for anyone. Did anyone see Ken Miller Friday night btw? I think Darian could've chosen his words more carefully last week but hey, he's an emotional guy. And I don't think that's the last game he'll play at New Mosaic Stadium as a visitor.

3 - TEACHABLE MOMENTS: The Riders are getting them all out now. Bakari Grant's hotdog move in the second quarter which cost the team a TD and himself 1000 yards was a microcosm of the night. The Riders are getting away with little things that could kill them in the playoffs but at least they're learning the lessons now. In two weeks' time, there will be no do-overs.

4 - RIDER MATH: The final week of the season is at hand and it's not as confusing as it appears. If the Riders beat Edmonton on Saturday in Regina, they're assured of finishing third. It's that simple. However if the Eskimos win, not only do they have a shot at clinching second, they're assured of at least third and the Riders will finish fourth and crossover into the East for the playoffs. I hope I have that right. Maybe it's more confusing that I thought.

5 - EAST OR WEST?: I guess we'll find out what road the Riders want to take based on the roster they field in Week 20. No matter who's in the lineup, I expect them to give 100% effort but this week's game doesn't have a "playoff" feel. To a man, the players feel either road to the Grey Cup will be difficult and don't have a preference. Personally I'd like to go East, but that's just for better and longer road trips (not because the opponents would be easier). Plus, I'd love to see a Saskatchewan-Calgary Grey Cup.

6 - SHUT YOUR MOUTH!: One of the most memorable radio calls of my career was entirely impromptu, even if many listeners thought it was staged. How could it have been? In my wildest dreams I never thought Duron Carter would record a Pick 6 against Bo Levi Mitchell in Calgary last week so when he did, I was stunned. But I was also so happy Duron was cramming it right down BLM's throat since Bo had been bullying him earlier in the week. I'm glad the call was the talk of the CFL, but it certainly wasn't rehearsed.

7 - LOOKING AHEAD: But not too far ahead. The Riders liberally rotated all three of their QBs in Friday's win over Montreal and although it seemed chaotic, Chris Jones said they had a plan. He's just not prepared to divulge what that plan is. The Riders are in remarkable shape at QB heading into the playoffs (see Winnipeg, who can't win without Matt Nichols). This trio is egoless and just wants a ring. The off-season is an entirely other thing and you'll want to have your popcorn handy for free agency. But that can wait.

8 - GREY CUP SOLDOUT: A few people have asked me if it's a coincidence that the Riders are back in the playoffs and the Grey Cup is soldout a month in advance. I'd like to think we're not arrogant enough to believe that, but maybe it's NOT a coincidence. If this is the case, then the entire CFL should be kissing the feet of Chris Jones for getting Canada's Team back in The Dance.

9 - SPEAKING OF: Chris Jones is doing remarkable things with Duron Carter in more ways than one. Is DC89 the first player in CFL history to be a Player of the Week on both sides of the ball? I'd guess so. Carter is gregarious, verbose, unpredictable and out-of-this-world talented (sort of like Odell Willis). And Jones was able to harness Odell in Edmonton long enough to win a Grey Cup and turn him into an All Star. It appears he's doing the same thing with Duron. Is the NFL paying attention? To ALL of them?

10 - LOCK DOWN JONES: There's talk that Chris Jones should be presented with a contract extension NOW since he delivered a playoff berth in Year 2 of the rebuild. The Nervous Nancies think that if Jones delivers a Grey Cup this year, he'll have the Riders by the you-know-whats and hold them for ransom. It's a tough call for Craig Reynolds. Jones didn't deliver a home playoff game this year, although that would have seemed impossible. Methinks this talk can wait till the off-season, but it's not my call and I'm glad for that.

Y'er welcome,
RP

Loved it when Carter had the pick six from big mouth Bo. Seems the stamps are stumbling which doesn't hurt too many people. Good to see Dick the Dick and big mouth Bo losing

In my opinion, the Riders rebuild also included Murphy who seems to have a knack finding or even judging existing cut players who would perform well for Jones. Would the Riders be successful if he wasn't on board?
Offer Jones an extension now? Really a tough call but if they do what about Murphy too? (Although I am not sure when his expires.)The caution is sometimes it seems after the contract is extended they don't seem to preform as well and get fired leaving years of salary for the team to eat. Hello Cory Chamblin and several others.
That being said in my opinion it would be best to negotiate near the end of a contract, just in case says this Rider fan for life.

Wow I'd hardly call what Mitchell said on Twitter bullying... lol

Imagine how it must be for sports fans in Montreal these days. Habs suck as bad as the Alouettes. Oh how the mighty have fallen!

Wow...Chris Jones turned Odell Willis into and all-star...that is straight uniformed bs and don't you dare try and give Jones that credit cause it is very untrue. Odell Willis was already an all-star in Winnipeg and that was way before Jones...go take a look at his career and stats...he was a all-star first in Winnipeg. Green Glasses are sure tough to see through or grey immediately put you over the .08 level.

Duron Carter was just as mouthy and arrogant as BLM in that exchange.
"Shut your mouth" is not a quote I would be proud of having repeated around the league.
The Riders may have been Canada's team when they were a more modest bunch. For example, under Ken Miller. Who could hate Gramps? Even the 89 team when they were viewed as a hard working blue collar team. Under Jones, the Riders are going the other way. Even some long time Rider fans from Saskatchèwan refuse to cheer for Jones and he has not exactly endeared himself around the country with some of his comments and actions.
I hardly think it is the Riders making the playoffs that sold out the Grey Cup. Another shot of arrogance from Rider Nation. After all, they are not even filling their new stadium lately. Give Ottawa some credit.
Kiss Jones' feet indeed! Not going to happen.

I have a lot of respect for Dickenson. Mostly because of the way he ran head first post concussion taking out the Riders in a West semi years ago. Recently his comments about his players minding their own business was aimed at Bo without singling him out.

Chris Jones far superior than highest payed NFL head coach Sean Payton who rakes in 8 million per year, so give Mr. Jones 10 million, he's that good. All teams in the CFL can chip in to keep a good man in the league. He just might be able to rotate as a rover giving the other 8 franchises gm/hc advice on how to win.

A Grey Cup sellout when capacity is 36000 isn't exactly something to write home about.

Not a peg fan bud and sorry to hurt your feelings Rod but anyone that knows the CFL, knows that Odell Willis was a star way before Jones. Sorry to have to call you out Rod but maybe you should go for a walk and get some fresh air...also read the stats and history of Odell Willis before writing an untrue statement.

Hey readers, I was just reading that ole donkey boy from Calgary has welched on his bet with Lancaster/Reed. Loser was to not post on sites anymore but it looks like donkey has turned out to be a liar with 0 credibility. Typical stamp fan, ohhhhh the real stamp fans must be soooooooo proud of this guy.

As far as Odell goes, it was his character not his play that was the problem in earlier years. He was a problem in the dressing room from what I understand. Not sure about now. Hopefully people are not too hard on Bakari Grant for celebrating too soon. It was a lesson to those players who focus too much on the celebration for sure but I for one have been very thankful to have Bakari here this year. His play has been terrific this year.

Hey AnonyMOUSE,
Hate to break it to you but nobody cares about your opinion, especially when it comes time to spout your verbal diarrhea on this site. Fire up your Xbox and stay in the basement until we tell you it's time to come up! Or maybe brush your tooth and have a bath, probably haven't done either in awhile!

mark my word on this one....Durant will be in Calgary and Bo will be a back up. That is after he tanks hit again in the playoffs. He is the king of coughing up a horker in the playoffs.

Didn't Jones sign a 5 year deal?

Meaning that he still has 3 more after this year is done, and there shouldn't be any worry about him leaving.

Oh pulleaze! It's obvious you're a homer, Rod, but Ottawa has supported their team very well & are as crazy about their team as anybody. The 2010 Grey Cup set a record for fastest sell out - 3 days - all 63,317 tickets. This was a dozen days before the 1st pre-season game. Nobody knew who was going to be in the Grey Cup game that year at the time. Are you going to give all the credit to Rider fans for the sell out? Maybe the organizers in Edmonton had something to do with it. Check out CFL attendance figures for 2009, the year prior, to see that the Riders were 3rd in attendance despite appearing in the Grey Cup that year, a whopping 6,000 fans/game less than the 2 Alberta cities. So maybe going into 2010 the record GC sellout of 3 days had something to do with fans in Alberta. The Ottawa RedBlacks set a franchise record for season ticket sales this year. With the RedBlacks winning last year & season ticketholders getting 1st crack at tickets, the majority of tickets will be held by Ottawa fans. There are other teams with a shot at the Cup & their fans also buy tickets. We RedBlacks don't hold tickets just for you. You get alloted a share of tickets, just like everybody else. We all know you guys are full of yourselves but get real.

I hope you never see DD play in Mosiac again. I was always a DD fan but I hate it when athletes play too long.

It was Hervey that was the reason for change on Odell Willis not Jones, Jones was there a year after Willis.

If there are fans that still hate Jones in this province, it’s that old superiority complex, plain and simple. Same reason why guys like Roy Shivers haven’t been chosen for the Plaza of Honour yet. Good on Reynolds for not listening to the old boys club and hiring Jones in the first place.

Jones has a four-year contract, IIRC. There is plenty of time between now and then to talk about an extension, if it's warranted. One season at 3 games over .500 is FAR too soon to talk about an extension. Let's see what the playoffs and next year bring.

I'm not generally a fan of BLM, but I thought he took his lumps pretty graciously, giving credit to Carter. I gained at least a little respect for him.

Jones can advise everyone how to win???? Excuse me but his team is in 4th. Trestman had a completely rebuilt team & has more wins than Jones did his 1st year. Jones had the same # of wins as June Jones has in his 1st 8 games, not 18 like Chris Jones had last year. Give your heads a shake. This may surprise you but nobody in Edmonton misses Jones. Jones doesn't stay in 1 place long. If the US colleges come calling it's bye bye Regina. He'll take the money & run. Haven't you been paying attention to his career?

After last years Grey Cup disaster in Toronto. It is welcoming news to hear the Grey Cup is sold out. Odel Willis while and all star, was a complete Jack Ass in Winnipeg. Remember his comments during the 2011 Grey Cup? Jones I'm sure had to put extra meetings in with Willis just like he is now with Carter.

Anonymous said...

Jones was not there at the start with Willis in Edmonton, Hervey was. Hervey had most of the dealings with players...one of the main reasons Jones didn't want to stay, because he wanted more pull then he had and Hervey would not allow it. If you paid enough attention to the Esks as I do then you would know that Hervey took care of any problem players on the team.

Anonymous said...

You don't even know your own teams coach contract but yet you know about Willis...Chris Jones signed a 3 year deal, google it and find all the news feeds stating it.

Anonymous said...

Sorry dude your wrong. All the EE has to do was offer Jones the GMs job. Which you might as well have. Because the all powerful Hervey doomed learned. Your not more powerful that the President or the league.
Jones will remain in SK until the NFL calls him. Which I doubt they ever will.
Toronto does not have to deal with finding s new QB. Without Ricky Ray Treatman is nothing. Just like he was in Chicago.
June Jones gets 6 of his wins against a piss poor East division. Again has the advantage of sitting an over paid QB. The Tigercats has no where to go but up. 60-1 against Calgary. Then shine gets to play the first few games against struggling east teams.

10 - LOCK DOWN JONES:

Chris Jones has had two years to solidify our QB situation and he hasn't even started. Next year Kevin Glenn will be a year older and a year slower and Vince Young will still be in Texas. Brandon Bridge becomes a free agent in February so he could be anywhere. That leaves Vernon Adams, do you find that worthy of a contract extension?

Anonymous said...

who says people lose there arrogance or even have arrogance per se because they are not doing what you want? Quitting booze is first a simple first step then it's all about character defects and how to live an okay life. Sober is quitting booze. Sobriety is learning to live life and now wade into the swamp without it driving you crazy, and recovery is when you simply laugh at the swamp and sleep knowing you've turned it over and it's not in your hands anymore.

Dear Kiss feet,

There's a new sheriff in town, Mr. Jones the name, Mr. Chris Jones.

There is no way Jones can do anything with the QB situation year one. Durant was under a guaranteed contract. Play or don’t play. Didn’t matter. Plus the fans were already up in arms over releasing Chick, Dressler and not resigning Getzlaf. After watching a dismal performance by Durant in 2016. Then and only then was the fan base ready to see something else happen at QB. Plus Darians play in Montreal has proved Jones right.
To get the Riders at double the wins of the previous year is a miracle. The last time the Riders had an 11 win season was when Taman purchased a team so far over the cap Taman had to pay players into the following year in different positions on the team. Re: Gerry Simon was moved to the front office and was paid his other 2013 50% plus his second year 2014 as an office worker all in 2014. That was only one of the crazy things Taman did to afford winning the Grey Cup at home.
Jones has the cap well under control now. So yes he has done a fantastic job. Even with the QB situation. Brandon Bridge is here. Every player has a contract expiry date. Even Bo Levi or Mike Reilly. So why be concerned about that. If Jones wants Bridge here in 2018 he will resign him. The Riders are under a solid Coaching and Management team.
Wake up and support them and remove that aroma of stink and hatred.
