SCRUFFY'S THIS N' THAT

Welcome to Friday!  Here are the usual weekly thoughts running through my muddled mind, and as always they come in no particular order.

 - Who is off to Innipeg? (No "W") The Rider Nation will do this weekend what Bomber fans did last and that is travel in support of their team. I just ask for you not to be as stupid as some of those in attendance at Mosaic last weekend.

In fact, if you are going and you have plans to be a complete and total idiot looking for trouble, just stay home and save the organization from being no better than the jackwagons who sat in Pil Country last weekend who thought it was cool to spit on Duron Carter while assaulting Gainer.

- Doug Brown, what an embarassment you've become! I believe "weepy blog article" was the way Jungle Jim Lang referred to it and that might be the most positive assessment coming from these parts. I always knew Scott Schultz was 10 times the defensive lineman he was, and he is 10 times the writer as well and I've never read anything penned by the "Old 96er".  If you really believe what you wrote down, you should seek medical advice immediately because you might have CTE.

It is real sad when teams that you were on did the same thing you accuse the Riders of AND your team president was one who would often jump offsides on 3rd down plays to keep the clock ticking. Guess you forgot about that didn't you Doug?

The most despicable thing on the field that involved the Bombers in the LDC was the Bombers themselves and that's fact.  If they don't play any better in the Banjo Bowl, be prepared for another loss.  You are better than that and so is the team you cover.  By the way, your former teammates Matt Dunigan and Milt Stegall think you are out to lunch too. They have no problem with anything that went down. Deal with it Doug!

- It sets up what should be a wild affair Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Field. Do the Riders stay on a roll or does Winnipeg bounce back from a less than stellar outing in the Labour Day Classic? If the /=S=/ get the "W", and they get it in convincing fashion as they did last Sunday, you will be able to say that perhaps this team could be putting themselves in a position to host a playoff game. You couldn't say that a while ago.  How things can change!

- Before the Riders play their big game on Saturday, the Regina Rams have a big game Friday night. They are in Calgary to play the Dinos in what will be Steve Bryce's first time patrolling the sidelines at McMahon Stadium. The Dinos are as tough at home as the Stampeders are. Calgary has been the class of Canada West for a long time and they show absolutely no sign of letting go of the hold they have on the conference.  The Rams knocked them off last year to get their season going, and I can see it happening again.

Sheldon Gray's D neutralized a good UBC team last week and I could see a repeat of that tonight.  If Noah Picton is Noah Picton, I see the Rams pulling off the upset and could you really label it that if they do? I'll have the call for you on 620 CKRM at 530 alongside Addison Richards who makes his debut behind the microphone. I know he is jacked up for it, and so am I.  I hope Mr. Richards knows what he is in for. Somehow I think he does!

- Let's not forget about the Thunder. The Hilltops schooled them in Week 1 and reminded them that they were in no mood to hear about having their reign atop the PJFC end from the team just a couple of hours south. The rematch goes Saturday in Saskatoon. We will see how Scott McAulay's team rebounds.

- Evraz Place is showing again this week why it has to be one of the best sports facilities in Canada.  The Riders are getting ready for the Bombers at Mosaic, the Pats are getting ready for the upcoming WHL season at the Brandt Centre and the Grand Slam of Curling is happening at the Co-Operators Centre. There has been a solid turnout at the CoC for the first event of the year on the curling schedule as rinks like Jennifer Jones, Rachel Homan, Brad Gushue and Kevin Koe take part.

Regina's Braeden Moskowy is also here playing with the Winnipeg rink skipped by Reid Carruthers. I was somewhat surprised when he said this is the first time he has curled competitively in Regina since he was in the junior ranks.  It would be hard not to pull for him if his rink made it to the Brier. Of course, it would be better if he were skipping a Saskatchewan team at said event, but he's quite comfy where he is and as he said to me on Wednesday, I'd love to be here for the Brier unless I'm representing Canada at the Olympics. That would be OK too.

- Are we really less than 30 days from the start of the NHL season?

- Week 1 NFL Lock of the Week --- Pittsburgh over Cleveland
NFL Upset of the Week -- Seahawks over Green Bay.

By the way my Super Bowl prediction is Seattle over Pittsburgh.

- Didn't see Kansas City winning outright in New England, but I did have them to cover. I certainly didn't start Alex Smith in one of my fantasy leagues though. SIGHHHH!!! Don't think  many people saw the Chiefs going into New England and destroying the Patriots.

- What are your expectations for the Pats? They certainly were the center of attention in the Queen City last year and for good reason after putting up 52 wins and getting to Game 6 of the WHL final before losing. This team isn't close to what that team was.  The rink will be full every night as fans watch this team go from night one to the Memorial Cup. What is the over under on wins? Is 40 too high?  I don't see this team making a lot of noise until after the WHL trade deadline.

- I can't wait for the baseball playoffs. There are a lot of very good teams that are going to battle it out to get to the World Series. It won't surprise me one bit if the same matchup we saw last year is what we see this year. What has happened to the Dodgers?

- Welcome back Jay and Dan! They still crack me up.  Their line this week previewing the Colts at Rams game where they said its Scott Tolzien against Jared Goff in the battle of QB's on no one's fantasy team was just pure gold.

That's all I got. Have a great weekend! Behave if you are going to Innipeg.  GO RIDERS!  GO SEAHAWKS!

"while assaulting Gainer.". Come on Scruffy, Gainer was never assaulted and you know it. A fan reached out of the stands but last I read was ,"No Contact was made, so quit building it up like it happened or it will happen if Gainer goes to Blum Bloomer town.

I am a little shocked by the use of the term CTE against Doug Brown. Especially with the recent report by McMaster University and the Hamilton Spectator. Many players just in their 40's are showing decreased brain capabilities. Ninety-five per cent of the players studied had decreased activity in a part of the prefrontal cortex believed to be associated with decision-making. I think Scruffy, you really should apologize for making light of CTE.

Doug Brown's piece in the Free Press was actually a good read. Understand his context as a homer and promoter. It's all good...just call it good fun. I did send him a note, suggesting that it sounds like he's admitting the Bombers were out-coached. He hasn't replied. Lol.
If the shoe drops on the Riders this weekend, no big deal. A nice run of late. But the football club plays what, 11 or 12 straight weeks now. No more bye weeks. It will be a challenge to stay completely healthy, which we are already seeing after the Labour Day win.
But, gotta keep the faith!

Innipeg....Loseipeg....Whineapeg. LOVE IT!! Good job Scruff. GO RAMS!!

the rules are in place even if injury is "faked" the player is out for 3 plays. takes any judgement away from refs on determining if injuries are real. so you are right, Bombers need to deal with the real reason they got their butt kicked as opposed to creating a diversion. Disagree with you on Doug Brown as a player though. Scott Schultz was good, but Brown was great. All Cdn, Hall of Famer, he was probably a better player than Schultz at both their peaks. Plus he didnt bail in mid season, which is a stain on Schultz. Ask Jones if Moncrief is in and if AJ Jefferson will be too. Too much fake injury talk not enough on the roster. Moncrief way better than Dargan from what I saw. And makes no sense that Carter is the backup cornerback and kick returner on the roster. Team is 1 injury away from an in game mess. Riders should win this game, they have better athletes and Bombers record is a bit of a mirage with all those freaky tight wins. They should be 5-5 probably.

Oh I just can't take it anymore. You have been calling out Doug Brown and the Bombers all week long and using that ridiculous whiny voice and all you have done is prove that you are no better than anything you complain about. How does a grown man such as yourself not see this? But I guess I'm no better than any of it, because I keep listening and keep reading. Rod, get some better co hosts please.

The video and picture evidence says otherwise you clown!

WOW….40 wins for the Pats this season!….that's a real come down from last year. Not saying you're wrong and in fact you might be spot on. The real concern is what's the CHL going to think about such a mediocre team hosting the Memorial Cup .The mistake Paddock made last season giving up all the first rounders for Mahura will come back to bite him. He has nothing to trade with.

Anonymous said...

If you think those injuries were not fake you had better get checked.

Anonymous said...

Sugesting Brown has CTE is tasteless.

Anonymous said...

Pats might struggle for the first month or so depending on when players from NHL camps get back. Paddock will make the right moves to make them contenders for the Memorial Cup. No point in hosting it if you don't have a legitimate shot at winning.

I think if Scruffy took time to read the extensive article in the September issue of The Walrus magazine by Brett Popplewell titled 'Head Games' he would not have tossed out CTE in his Stampede Wrestling style rank against Doug Brown. The Popplewell article is probably one of the best written so far about the CFL and player safety.

One of the tragic CFL stories covered by the article is that of Arland Bruce. His story began with a serious brain injury on Taylor Field exactly five years ago as outlined in the article. Sruffy was probably at the game when Bruce lay unconscious on the field for a period of time.

Scruffy is someone who is paid to cover the Riders and interact with players through interviews. His use of CTE in such a trivial way suggests that there is still serious shortcomings in the understanding by some media folk as to how sad and tragic brain injuries are, both for the player's future health and welfare and that of his family.

Shameful Mitch, CTE is nothing to joke about.

Anonymous said...

You're the lowest of the low Scruffy, to suggest Brown has CTE. Even if it was a joke, which I'm pretty sure it wasn't.

Anonymous said...

Have we really become this sensitive to everything that a simple joke/poke can't be made? Yes its a terrible disease but seriously? It's a joke people, like it or leave it, move on.

Anonymous said...

Who said scruffy had any taste?

Anonymous said...

Of course we faked a few injuries and every team does for the last 50 years. Big deal. It happens get over it. It's not illegal player sits out 3 plays done over with. Next game please.

Anonymous said...

Player's know the risk's involved in playing a violent game, and they are compensated accordingly. It's no different than a smoker who get's lung cancer and is surprised. Don't be surprised when you have brain injury after bashing your head against a wall. They choose to do it and get many perks from being a pro athlete. Don't feel sorry for them! I do feel sorry for scruffy tho, he has no excuse for his brain injury!

Anonymous said...

never mind CTE scruffy, I think you have to much MSG running through your brain!

Anonymous said...

Come on, Scruffy, drop the arrogance. Don't pretend the Riders wouldn't be upset if Winnipeg's so called injured players and the trainer were laughing before they even hit the sideline, when the Riders were trying to run a no huddle offence. You and your cohorts would be calling it "Winnipegish". I read the article by Doug Brown and did not find it embarrassing. Certainly no more embarrassing than Rider writers defending some of the questionable practices that have occurred in Rider nation in the last few years. You want Doug Brown to develop some class; try finding some in Riderville first.

Times change, attitudes change and things that wrte acceptable before become a thing if the past. It's called progress. So joking about a football player having CTE or being "brain-damaged" is not really socially acceptable anymore. Kind of like maling fun of someone with mental illness or deficiencies and calling them a "retard"

AND COMMENT OF THE YEAR GOES TO............

MSG comment guy!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Funny thing is Blair wouldn't say anything to Brown if they came face to face. In fact he'd be rushing home to change his knickers.

Anonymous said...

WOW. That CTE comment reminded me of school in the summer

-no class

I bet you wouldn't be too happy if he said to you :

"you should seek medical advice immediately because you might have type 2 diabetus" (said in a Wilford Brimley voice, RIP).

Anonymous said...

Initially, Blair, Pedersen and Jones used the Colin Thatcher defense (deny, deny, deny).
Now it's evolved to, 'yeh we did it but everybody does' for Blair and Pedersen although Jones has changed to, "It's not my place to judge or comment on that."
I'm betting the league changes the 'sit three plays' to five plays. All because Jones has to test every rule. He did $160,000 worth of testing last year.

these guys that get diagnosed with diseases were goofs long before they ever got sick or had a health issue.

Announcement coming that 2018 CFL Week will be in ... you guessed it: Winnipeg. I have an idea for a charity fund raiser. How about a cage match between Scruffy and Doug Brown. In any event, if Scruffy does go to Winnipeg to partake in the festivities it could be tense.

Anonymous said...

How is Scott Schultz 10 times the player that Doug Brown was ? Brown is a CFL hall of farmer and 8 time all star. Schultz is not in the hall of fame and was an all star once, how was he a better player ?

Anonymous said...

I'm not a guy who just talks about it, I'm all about it.

From the Engine that Drives In the 306, V8.

Anonymous said...

Because he's in the Pedersen clique and Blair and him are 2 of the worst homers in the game, given ckrm are the rights holders but they border on ridiculous. Blair wouldn't say a peep if Brown was in the same room.

Anonymous said...

maybe 40 wins heading into the new year....when everyone else comes back from either world jrs. or NHL ...they'll up that count

Anonymous said...

Scruffy you need to tone down the hate for everything, settle down man.

Anonymous said...

Mitch you actually believe the Bombers and the rest of the league are scared of playing the Riders. You made this ridiculous comment on air this week. In pro sports none of these teams and players would ever think that. They are all confident in their abilities and feel they can beat anybody and love that challenge of beating the best. Right now the Riders are feeling it and thankfully winning and playing well.

Do you think your Oilers are scared of playing the Pittsburgh Penguins? I would say no. They should be according to you cause they are the champions. And your Seahawks, would they be scared of playing the Patriots because they are Super Bowl Champions, No. More likely to be scared of playing Cleveland Browns or NY Jets if you want to be scared of playing someone and losing to those teams since they are so bad.

Here's what is funny

1) You clowns just don't get it. Hype and promotion are huge. Pedersen knows this, Brown knows this, Scruffy knows this. These guys would be great in WWE as heels. Why? They now what buttons to poke

2) All of these people going Scruffy wouldn't say anything if Doug Brown was in the same room. That is like you guys making comments under the moniker "anonymous". So funny, and so hilarious.

Keep up the outstanding work gents! Love it!

Brent S for the win!!So true! These thumb warriors are tough behind a keyboard hiding under the anonymous. They wouldn't have the sack to say that to Roddy, Scruffy, Luc or anyone. I would love to see those who want Carm back to say that to Rod and Luc in person. They won't.

GO RIDERS!!
