MASSIVE FALLOUT FROM LABOUR DAY CLASSIC 2017

This doesn't come off looking very good for Winnipeg.

In the aftermath of Sunday's 38-24 Saskatchewan win over Winnipeg in Labour Day Classic LIV at Mosaic Stadium, there are at least two separate incidents of lewd behavior by Blue Bombers fans.

Rider receiver Duron Carter has gone on a Twitter tirade accusing a Blue Bomber fan of spitting on him after his second quarter touchdown in the south endzone.

Carter went to celebrate with Rider fans situated in the front row of Pil Country and then - let's be honest - he taunted Winnipeg fans in the southwest corner of the stadium. That's when the heinous act allegedly occurred.

Carter said the "spitter" was wearing blue & gold facepaint.

And then, in a separate incident, a grainy photo appears to show a Winnipeg fan reaching out to contact beloved Roughriders mascot Gainer The Gopher as he passed by in the Gainer Mobile after a Saskatchewan touchdown in the same endzone.

It's not clear if the Bomber fan was trying to strike Gainer, rip off the head of his uniform, or pull him out of his cart. Either way, it was a disturbing act of violence.

Responding via text message on Monday, Gainer The Gopher said he's unable to comment on the situation publicly due to club policy. However he did seem shaken by the incident.

A Roughriders team spokesman said on Monday that, as of now, the club is not investigating the incident nor pursuing criminal charges.

In an interview with CBC on Monday, reporter Alicia Bridges asked me if I'd like to see assault charges brought against the perpetrators if they are identified. My response was "Absolutely".

The Roughriders will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Banjo Bowl on Saturday at Investors Group Field in a 1:00 pm Sask Time kickoff on TSN and the 620 CKRM Roughriders Radio Network.

Typical Rod. Stirring up the shit pot again.

While I am not condoning the fans from Winnipeg for these actions, roughrider nation better not be too quick to point the finger. As a Stamps fan living in Regina, I quit wearing my Stamps jersey to games 4 years ago. By nature, I am quiet and non-confrontational. I cheer positive events for my team, and don't believe in rubbing it in unless you are a close friend. I have had beer dumped on me, atrocious language in the presence of children, and even one gentleman shoved me after a Stamps TD. I have enjoyed the games much more without wearing my team colours. I have made the decision to give new Mosaic a chance wearing my Stamps jersey. I am hoping 4 years has matured Rider nation.

Is it true, that in order to be a Bomber fan,you need a grade eight education, live in a trailer park and have no teeth!

Brad McNeil said...

Been a Rider fan all my life and was a season ticket holder for many years, and been to games in both Winnipeg and Regina. I have seen the crap happen in both places. All you are doing Rod is giving the Bombers even more bulletin board material. The guy got removed from the stadium. Move on.

A Stamps fan living in Regina! You poor bastard!

Call it whatever you want Brad. Trying to rip Gainers head of is assault. In fact, spitting on someone is also assault.

So Rods just not supposed to talk about it. He's the voice of the Riders for crying out loud.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure you know what the word "lewd" means, Rod...

Unless these Bomber fans are bigger sickos than I'd imagined.

Actually, the spitting incident took place before the game began. Carter went down to Pil Country after player intros and was high-fiving Rider fans along the edge when a Bomber fan spit on him. Carter immediately ran over and got security to deal with it. The Bomber fan turned and quickly walked down to the west side of Pil Country and hid in the mass of Bomber fans down there. Not sure what happened after that but I don't think security actually caught him.

This will get the Blum Bloomer Fans Boiling and because of it they will quite likely out do us on the noise meter thanks to Mr. Pedersen. And when he reads this it probably wont get printed anyway.

Anonymous said...

That's horrible behavior from the Rider fans. Behavior such as this should result in ejection from the stadium. No matter which team or stadium. I am a Rider fan and do not agree with this behavior. As I am sure of that 99% of fans would agree with me.

Give it a rest McNeil.

Hey Brad did Rod steal your girlfriend at some point in your life? This was an ugly incident and it should be reported. Nowhere did Rod say all WPG fans are like this. He said it makes them all look bad and it does. Just like the guy who threw crap on McCallum's lawn made us all look bad too. If there's anyone raising a fuss and stirring the pot, it's YOU.

When the mascot is driving by on a motor vehicle and you try to pull him off, that is attempted murder and this fan should be imprisoned.

What's wrong with these Bomber fans? Can they not just enjoy a romantic weekend with there first cousin in our beautiful city.

Anonymous said...

Lol way to go Rod. You single handily lost us the noise competition. The stupidity of some comments on here.

1). Who cares.
2). Win the game. That's all that matters.

Talking with sister in Winnipeg and Brown has been on all morning talking about the terrible fans in Regina and how awful Jones has bad mouthed their #7. Sisters comments were anyone that talks ike that should be run out of town..Told her that done of that has been heard in Regina this morning but maybe I just hadn't heard it.

I very rarely see Stamp fans or any other opposing team fans treated unfairly at Mosaic. There is always going to be ribbing but isn't that the fun of it? I have a friend who's a Stamps fan come to a game at Mosaic and he had a great time with the Rider fans. If you act like a jerk be prepared to be treated badly.

Too bad the actions of a couple tools overshadows the positive details of the majority of bomber fans that come to Regina on their dime have good natured fun and put lots of money into local economy at hotels, restaurants, bars, gas stations ect.

I honestly would really hope if the shoe was on the other foot and I am guessing there has been ugly actions of rider fans in Winnipeg in the past, I would hope it would not get put to media labelling rider nation with the same brush....

Brad McNeil said...

I just think you are all over-reacting. If something similar happens in Winnipeg everyone will be on here defending the Rider fan. I just think this is something Rod chose to report to get a rise out of people and I guess it worked for me. I very much realize why I regret ever posting on here again and why I quit doing it years ago. Back to my cave and I have nothing against Rod in fact I very much enjoy him as a broadcaster. I just dislike his attitude sometimes.

Lol...you have got 2 be kidding me! I don't condone the behaviour by either fan, but let's not make this a bigger deal than it is. EVERY game there is an idiot or 2 in EVERY stadium, to say we need to start charging these dummies or "imprisoning" them is ludicrous. Throw them out and move on.
Hopefully the roll continues in "The Peg" next weekend! Go Green!

Anonymous said...

Quite the "Massive Fallout", no comment from the mascot and team isn't investigating or pursuing any of it.

To the anonymous stamps fan living in Regina. My husband was wearing his Rider hat at a grocery store in Calgary when a little old lady told him he had his *(&^% nerve to wear that hat there. There's been plenty of times some idiot has called him out just because he chooses to wear his team's colors. Not surprising since the only thing worse than a bomber fan is a stamps fan.

Brad Rod dosent have to stir anything. This was all over social media before Rod posted it. Chill man, Rods just doing his Site justice by keeping up with current events. He's not after the Bomber fans or Winnipeg.
Heck iI live the Bomber Rider rivalry. As long as we all keep it clean.

It goes twofold. For the season opener on the concourse a Winnipeg fan got in a fight with a Rider fan and guess what the glue was that propelled that. Massive alcohol consumption. I've seen people in the stands where other team's jersey's and nobody bothers them. It's when the booze is flying, the mouths get going, and they stand out there on the concourse starting stuff then it escalates into hooliganism. Enjoy the CFL and enjoy the games and stay off the sauce.

Pat Belitski said...

I have actually been in 2 confrontations at Rider games both on Labour Day. Once with a Bomber fan even before the game started who was beyond drunk and wouldn't leave my seat. He took a couple swings at me before I looked after it and one other incident during the game. That's why I stopped going to Labour day games and sold my tickets. I will likely never attend one again. Not worth going when that stuff happens.
Everyone should be allowed to cheat and wear their teams jersey without fear of abuse. Good natured rubbing is all a part of the fun. But swearing or physical violence has no place in the stands. Charge them all and lifetime bans from ALL CFL stadiums I say

Anonymous said...

Just go to the game in Winnipeg if you want to and yell and cheer as loud as you can for our Riders. Honestly, the Pil section is the old university section and things likely get a little crazy over there. If there is a problem with a fan he will be found and dealt with I'm sure, doesn't mean you stoop to their level when you go to their stadium. Duron Carter needs to focus on next weeks game and I hope when he has his talk with Coach Jones he is reminded to do so.

My suggestion is let's all cool out Jets. Hopefully Rod realizes that this article only gives the Bombers and their fans more amunition to kick ass next weekend.
I think if the Sports cage wants to discuss this. Great... but the longer it's in print the crappier it becomes for the Riders and Rider fans next weekend in Winnipeg.
Let's keep it clean and represent your team and fan base with class Riderville.

Every fan base has some idiots in it and act stupid including Rider fans. That being said I didn't see any Bomber fans being mistreated yesterday at all. I know from personal experience being in Winnipeg they were, well lets just say not as classy winning. Been at other stadiums, but Winnipeg was definitely the worse. I expect some ribbing but they go to far, it is only a game, a place to have some fun and escape from life for awhile. We could have really rubbed it in yesterday and from the end of the first quarter on but I didn't see anything after the game inside or outside the stadium. Thankfully Buzz and Boomer didn't assault Gainer.

Why does half the crowd have to be pissed out of their face to be a football game ? I don’t see it at hockey games. I would never take a kid to a cfl game , ever.

Rider fans must start a petition to have a special federal prosecutor appointed to get to the bottom of Gophergate! We need to ensure that there was no conspiracy by Putin and the Bomber President to bring harm to Gainer and distract Rider fans from what is going on in the field of play.

Justice For Gainer!

Down With Bomber Fans!

Boo Baby Boo!

I agree with this, hockey and baseball are my favourite sports. I have travelled to several places and I have not seen the booze flow as freely a at a Rider game. I don't understand going to games and getting out of control. I am there to watch the game.

The team and Gainer are not following up on it at all and it's a "massive fallout"? It's high school hyperbole time in here I guess.

Ohh boy.. way to paint an entire fan base with one brush stroke Pedersen. As a Bomber fan this kind of stuff just makes me embarrassed. I personally had a great time at the Canada Day game out in Regina and felt very welcomed. If you're going in to enemy territory you have to be ready for some good natured ribbing but you also have to respect the environment you're going into. I hope that any Rider fans coming east this weekend enjoy the weekend to the fullest and that the Banjo Bowl ends up as one of the best games of the season!

I been going to games for years and I can attest to the fact that there are NO bad apples among the Rider faithful at the games. Green apples, yes .. but bad apples, no. Our fans hold their liquor very well and are too engaged in the play on the field to be up to any hanky panky in the stands.

Anonymous said...

I've been to mosaic in my Bomber blue before and been spat on, food thrown at me, punched/hit and personal insults beyond normal sports ribbong hurled at me by Rider fans all unprovoked. There are bad apples in every fan base so enough of the holier than thou attitude Rod. Not all Bomber fans are represented by this moron, just as I know not all Rider fans are represented by the idiots who hurled items at me. Also I hardly believe Duron Carter is in a position to speak to ANYONE else's character given his own issues in the past.

Anonymous said...

Ive heard from a very reliable source that the bomber fans were trying to climb all over the 2 new statues of ronnie and george i really hope this is not the case show some class bombers fans

Anonymous said...

I'm a Bomber fan, I get things yelled and thrown at me (cause I chirp the Rider fans while my team is getting their ass kicked), but I won't paint Rider fans for giving me what I deserved with the same brush stroke.

Please don't point out those 2 fans who spat on Carter and clothes lined Gainer. It somehow makes them appear to be even worse fans than the rest of us dumb Bomber fans who do stupid things at other teams stadiums. Its ok for us to treat other teams fans like crap while they're in Winnipeg, even if they don't do anything to provoke it, because we're Winnipeg'ers and we just are that special kinda stupid.

These 2 incidents make just make the rest of us dumb Bomber fans look like we have some sort of intelligence and manners. WE DON"T APPRECIATE YOU POINTING THIS OUT!

Oh well, here's to the banjo bowl...

You can guarantee if this was involving a Rider fan the tone of this article woukd be a lot different, if it was even written at all.

Sorry but my experience with Bomber fans coming to Regina has been poor! Like a bunch of drunken college kids! The yearly drunken road trip! Always a few hotel rooms end up trashed!

Caesar said...

There are stupid fans in every stadium!! But, it's the reason we don't go to the game in Wpg!
The fan should definitely be charged, both of them, and then move on. You can't paint every fan with the same brush. Booze does this to early games, especially with good weather! Haha, fine them, and move on. Make them give a public apology as well!

I can definitely agree with you, I have been a Bomber fan all my life even since I am living in Regina, and this year I didn't renew my season tickets because of the Rider fans. At every Labour Day game since 2008, I have had beer cans, cups, food, etc thrown at me. Threats, swearing challenges to fight, and worse. I have tried to put up with it to make the most of going to the games but it removed all the fun out of going. Even at the other games when I would be attending, the fans continued their terrible behavior towards me because of the one game per year when my team played here and I wore my jersey. Absolutely terrible behavior but not surprising from Rider Nation.

Anonymous said...

As a Bomber Fan from Winnipeg I have been to almost every labour day in Regina for the last 8 years, last year will be the last time I step foot in Regina, as a Bomber fan at least. Every labour day we were taunted and had stuff thrown at us. I had my bomber hat ripped off my head a few years ago to which a Rider fan decided to rip off the visor. Last year we were followed back to the Delta hotel where we were staying by a group of guys that were trying to get us to fight. Delta had to call security to kick them out because of how aggressive they were. Lets be real here crappy Rider fans are no better than crappy Bomber fans. After this whole incident in Regina, I would not want to be a Rider Fan at IGF.

Where do people in Saskatchewan get the whole inbred joke from Manitoba? It's literally a stereotype of your god awful province that you direct back at Bomber fans because you're unoriginal and lack creativity. 104 decibels for peak? That's cute, especially for the second best fans LOL.

Anonymous said...

You obviously didn't read my comment that said I've been spat on in Mosaic so very Reginaish would be a better statement for you to make. I don't have to go away at your behest. Also contrary to the cousin/sibling marrying rules in Saskatchewan we actually have laws to prevent inbreeding in Manitoba...most civilized places do

Any Rider fans going to banjo bowl make sure you bring a waterproof hat for your child. Actually even if your a bomber fan. Who knows who those "smart" fans in Winnipeg will dump a beer on.

Ok holier than thou Bobmber fans. Your crappy fans, in your crappy 'new' stadium are just as bad. And based on your reaction to getting crushed in Regina this weekend (pouting, whining, crying) I guarantee you there will be excessive cry baby retaliation. Retaliation for what? Getting stomped on the field? I had been planning to come to Winnipeg for the game this weekend, but I know what it will be like. It'll make Mosaic feel like Disneyland. Plans changed, I'll watch on tv and just read about Bomber fan stupidity for the following week. Especially after losing again next weekend.

Everything about Winnipeg is awful. Everything.

Hey stinkeeed bomber fan. Unlike all your tootles fans watching TSN and getting the times to cheer. The fans that attend games were sitting in their seats watching the Ridets unhinge the Bombers.
If TSN is going to call out a fair competition. Then lay out the rules before hand. Not while your nose picking bomber fans are sitting in front of their standard definition 25 year old RCA CRT televisions.
Much like the way Winnipeg's downtown looks and feels. TSN made an ugly mess of this.

I've been lucky enough to visit every WHL rink, every Canadian NHL and CFL stadium, more than half of the MLB ball parks as well as a handful of college football games.

Regina sports fans are the worst in Canada. Maybe North America. There is no close second. Good natured heckling is common in most places, but Regina people are straight up assholes. Dumping beer on people, swearing with little kids present, throwing garbage on the playing surface and picking fights are just some of the pleasantries out of town fans get the most of in Regina. People will argue this point, but Regina will prove me right when the city embarrasses itself at this season's Memorial Cup. A shit show in Regina is guaranteed with any sport.

OMG glad school started back today so all you morons who actually have the time to comment on such juvenile schoolyard behavior can go sit in the corner in kindergarten..grow-up people seriously...I'm embarrassed to be a CFL fan for either team today if you people are my peers..good god get a life.

"Regina sports fans are the worst in Canada. Maybe North America. " you have NOT travelled as much as you say. Have you been to Southside Chicago? The Bronx? OAKLAND. Peaceful Seattle? I could go on.
