CAPITAL GMC RECAP: ROUGHRIDERS 38 BLUE BOMBERS 24

REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders are quickly becoming one of the hottest teams in the CFL.

Kevin Glenn threw three touchdown passes as the Riders beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 38-24 on Sunday for their third straight win.

The three-game winning streak has Saskatchewan above .500 at 5-4 and tied for fourth place in the West Division with the B.C. Lions. Saskatchewan trails Winnipeg and Edmonton, both tied for second place, by just four points.

"We're just running our plays and everybody is in sync right now,'' said Riders receiver Duron Carter. "When a football team is in sync, it's hard to stop. Any play that we run is breaking through. We're making a lot of plays right now and we're a tough team to stop.''

Glenn has been the catalyst during the hot stretch. Saskatchewan has scored 133 points, averaged 44 points per game, over the past three contests.

Glenn, who was 26 of 36 for 386 yards against Winnipeg, connected with Naaman Roosevelt and Rob Bagg for first-quarter touchdowns. Backup quarterback Vernon Adams added a rushing touchdown that pushed the Riders ahead 24-3 after the opening quarter.

Glenn hooked up with Carter in the second quarter on a 17-yard touchdown reception - his team-leading seventh major score - and Tyler Crapigna's two field goals gave the home team a 34-16 lead at halftime.

"Say that a team comes out and scores three quick touchdowns and it's 21-0, you would probably bet your money that that team was going to win the game,'' Glenn said. "It doesn't matter who's playing, if a team has a fast start like that, typically you can control the game.''

Taking advantage of field position helped too.

"We're starting fast and making sure we're taking advantage of the opportunities,'' Glenn added. "The defence set us up in the red zone a couple of times. If we only come away with field goals instead of touchdowns then it might be a different game.''

The score and the noise from the sellout crowd at Mosaic Stadium was a deflating combination for the Blue Bombers, who slipped to 7-3.

"That's never how you want to start a game,'' said safety Taylor Loffler. "Once you dig yourself a hole like that it's pretty tough to climb out. We had a good run toward the end, but we had a lot to overcome and that makes it hard on everyone.''

The Riders' balanced attack on offence proved difficult for Winnipeg. Three Saskatchewan receivers - Bakari Grant (139 yards), Roosevelt (119 yards) and Carter (101 yards) - eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

"We're really comfortable with what we have,'' Carter said. "As a receiver group, we're not selfish at all. We're always making sure we have the best matchups out there and KG (Glenn) is just finding us. We always have trust in KG to find us.''

Winnipeg found traction in the second quarter when quarterback Matt Nichols engineered three scoring drives. A 13-yard touchdown pass to Timothy Flanders and two field goals from Justin Medlock helped cut into the Saskatchewan lead late in the first half.

After the Winnipeg defence limited the Riders to a field goal in the third quarter, the Blue Bombers offence continued to rally in the fourth.

A 10-yard touchdown reception from Andrew Harris brought the visitors to within 14 points at 37-23. But that was as close as the Blue Bombers came to pulling off an improbable come-from-behind victory.

Nichols finished 35 of 47 for 364 yards. Harris led the Blue Bombers with 10 receptions for 72 yards. Flanders had 78 receiving yards, Weston Dressler added 64 yards on six catches and Darvin Adams had the second Winnipeg touchdown.

The same two teams meet in Winnipeg on Saturday.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM CHRIS JONES

- We played good football. When you give up 400 yards offense, you can never say you played great. We need to eliminate the big plays they had.

- You've got to play two halves. That's why there's four quarters. We have to learn to shut them down when we get up.

- Last week was a pretty good start in Edmonton too. I'd rather execute over four quarters than to blow them out early and then hang on at the finish line.  You don't have to be Superman out there. Just do your job. Be in the right place and give great effort.

- It's a lot easier calling defensive plays when you're watching your offense move the ball down the field and score points.

- The crowd is always impressive. Fan day was impressive yesterday. Whenever you talk about our fans, it's always impressive.

- We (the coaching staff) wouldn't have come here if that wasn't the case. Quite honestly, we'd have stayed in Edmonton. We had it pretty good. But here when people get up in the morning, they want to read something on the internet about their football team. That's what makes it special here.

- We had our back up against the wall and we had something to prove. We're not asking anybody to play a perfect game. Just do the things you're asked. Other than that, play fast and have fun.

- We've got an awful good football team. To say we've got everything we need, that would be premature. We had holes in Edmonton too. But it's up to other teams to find those holes.

- Ed Gainey made a big play early, and then he made a really big play late when they went to a guy that's hot for them. He's a really good football player.

- KG played very well tonight. He was 70-something percent, throwing it really well. He didn't miss many throws tonight and he had a few drops. He's playing very well. He broke the team down tonight and you can see that the guys are rallying behind him. He's such a high-character guy. He's there regardless, and that's why we like him.

- Winnipeg's a loud place to go play. Even the old stadium was loud. We've got practice with noise this week. We had two offside penalties at home as it is, so we have to be better in that area.

Only 4 points in 2nd half good win but have to put the foot on the throat and finish stronger

Games over, boys played well, now rest for a couple days then peddle to the metal for another beat down to the bummers

Just keep correcting mistakes and we are in every game. Mike O'Shea will have some new looks next week and injuries are starting to add up so everyone needs to have another "best" game. Great exciting game to watch! And here is absolutely nothing wrong with the play by play Rod and Luc, keep up the good work.

May we force feed crow to the "Fire Chris Jones and bring back Darian Durant" crowd pretty please?

Occasionally you learn things lining up at the urinal such as:

Bomber fans are very impressed with the quality of our new stadium compared to their own.

The colours used for the "New House, Same Home" cards were those of the former wooden benches at Taylor Field.

Fans love Carter and Roosevelt.

It's a very good win because it has now put us 5-4 in the first half of the season. If we can be as good or better than that in the second half, it translates to at least 10 wins and perhaps more. That will get us into a playoff position no doubt.

The parade of Jones haters are conspicuous by there absence on the blog.

There was much to like about the game but also much to be concerned about. Defence has to tighten up because giving up 400 yards of offence is not a recipe for continued success. Too many big plays against. However if the offence would have done just a little bit in the 2nd half, perhaps some of those big plays against wouldn't have happened. Still lots of work to do.

All in all I will take these every weekend.

Ya dude! Like didn't you realize those Winnipeg radio guys were drunk! Ya'all need to come hang with Roddy,Luc and Rider Nation!

Does anyone know the story behind the decision of both team's players to meet at center field for a group hug BEFORE the game? This is something that happens AFTER the game. What was going on? It seemed unprecedented in any football game I have ever witnessed.

The photos of Rider D-line players faking injuries on the 3-Down Nation site (and laughing on the field to rub it in)to stop the Bomber hurry-up offense on two occasions is troubling. Riders don't need to cheat the rules to win.

Great victory, soundly defeating the hottest team in the league. And another sellout. Noticeably absent here are the Jones haters and Durant whiners. Newsflash people: Chris Jones knows what he's doing. These past 3 games are no coincidence. We are now seeing the fruits of the TOTAL teardown and rebuild. Those without the stomach or patience to have faith in the master plan - see ya! I guess you have already gone.....crickets...

Wonderful choice by ESPN Classics to show the 2007 Labour Day Classic tonight! Kevin Glenn looks good throwing for the Bombers and with hair to boot. Mo Lloyd, a young John Chick, Old 96'er, Taylor Field hysteria .. what a walk down memory lane!

Agree with the first poster. The Bomber play by play guys are horrible.

But great job as always Rod.

This is what Bomber fans were reading in Winnipeg. Ha... What a Joke::
During a post-game discussion, Harris was annoyed by the number of Roughriders players who suffered injuries when the Blue Bombers were trying to get into their hurry-up offence.
“I mean I just feel like every time we went hurry-up, one of their defensive linemen would have a cramp,” said Harris. “It was a bit of a coincidence every time that happened. I don’t know if it was part of the game plan or that actually was happening. But it was definitely pissing me off.”
Harris wasn’t the only one frustrated by the Roughriders possible tactics.
“It was pretty easy to see what was happening,” said Blue Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols.

I also saw the 3-DownNation photos of our poor injured linemen laughing about it and our trainers yuking it up when a guy is supposedly in pain.

Remember last year when Chris Jones supposedly told Dave Dickensen to "Win with class"? Maybe Jones should practice what he preaches!

Those D-linemen faking cramps just to stymie the hurry-up offense are disgusting tactics.

Chris Jones is once again embarrassing the CFL and I'm thinking that kind of crap is Commissioner Ambrosie's next challenge.

Probably best to stop the comments calling out SK fans that don't like Chris Jones. They still love the Riders. Until these last 3 games they had a season and a half of just the opposite. Let's cheer together like the team playing together. Become Saskatchewan Strong.
3 solid Victories certainly has everyone sitting up and taking notice. Next weekend is another big test as it will be an aggressive and loud crowd and down right mean play from the Bombers. Certainly a recipe to roll over and play dead.
3 weeks the men (not kids; coaches quit calling them kids. It sounds bloody ridiculous) have played like STUDS. They have certainly deserved to wear the [=S=] All I can say to the team is keep playing hard and fast and smart. Eventually you will show every non believer you are for real. Go into Winnipeg and take away the victory to cross one more item off the list.

If we'd had stuck with the old boys club, as some here wanted to do, we'd be stuck in another malaise like the 80's and 90's. Reynolds knew what he was doing by brining in a guy who knows how to win and brings people with him who also know winning. Those holding a grudge for him cutting their stars need to suck it up. This is a business and Jones has proven he knew what he was doing. Consider this: if we'd had kept Dressler and his cap hit we wouldn't be able to sign two guys like Carter and Grant. Same with Doubles and his monster salary he wanted.

Love the three game win streak but let's not plan the parade just yet. Like many I'm not really a Jones fan but nothing beats winning. Having said that Jones isn't doing this all by himself. If Kevin Glenn goes down then let's see how much you like Jones. Anyway the game was great and the first Labour Day game had lots of excitement. Very apparent the Riders linebacking corps are the weak link in this D. Hopefully some NFL cuts will find their way up here. Also I absolutely hate rushing 3 D linemen. It NEVER works and eventually a QB like Nichols will find an open receiver. Finally, the O line is much better of late. Getting Dan Clark out of there helps. If Glenn has time he will pick most D's apart with this outstanding group of receivers. Probably the best in the league.
The game in the 'Peg could be one for the ages.

This was a great game to watch because we got up early and never let go of the lead. The fact that Winnipeg was starting to make a comeback lets us know there are still things to correct and get better at but the to do list is getting smaller.

Anonymous said...

Several of us have told you numerous times. It is not having cut or traded fan favorites but the manner in which it was done. These actions can be done with class and respect or done as Jones did them, with arrogance and belittlement; so unnecessary. Men in positions of authority should learn to work with class, respect for those under him and some humility. Jones showed none of those in dealing with several players, even some that he himself brought in. That is why he will never ever have the respect of some of us. There is nothing for us to "suck up" , as you put it. Jones demanded class from Dicky but has absolutely none himself. I can not name one class act from him since he arrived.

Have to say I got a chuckle out of some of the Bomber fans at the game. A big, tough looking women sitting in our section had a nasty frown on her face while sitting decked out in her Bomber jersey. What set her apart was two wonderful big shiny buttons on her jersey. One said "ARGOS SUCK" and the other "RIDERS SUCK". No one was going to trash talk her!

Ken Miller always conspicuously called his players "the men".

And the way he himself answered questions immediately after the devastating 2009 Grey Cup loss showed that he truly was a man.

(And he wouldn't have pulled stunts like faking injuries and embarrassing the CFL.)

Granted, his last year may not have ended well, but Ken Miller will always be one of my favourite Riders.

Yeah, cuz no team has ever faked an injury. Maybe O'Shea should look in the mirror. Suck it up Winnipeg, you got your ass handed to you.

On another matter, do Regina police not patrol Pil Country? I see enough of them in the stadium, but those idiots in the endzone wearing blue yesterday were asking for their ass to get handed to them.

Some of you obviously never watch any other football games but Rider games or Manitoba fans watching Bomber games.
The Riders probably should have just crushed the bombers esophagus hen they had their foot on the Bombers throat. When your up 24-3 you as a team now how the ability to control the speed of the game. The Riders chose to control the ball and the game clock instead of going hard. The positive of slowing down the game to average game speed once you have a substantial lead is it usually prevents injuries. The draw back is the competing team feels they are gaining momentum and start to implement other tactics to try and make a comeback. So it's up to the defence to show them who is in control. I see this style of play or tactics used all the time. Only piss poor losers use it as an excuse. Yet that same team complaining will use the exact same tactic to their advantage as early as the very next game.
I watch a lot of football and the practise of slowing down an offence trying to go into hurry up offence is used everywhere all the time. It's not like SK stopped every hurry up offensive play. The Bombers used several hurry up plays.
We will never know in the the 1st half of the game if in fact one of the 2 stoppages was in fact for cramping. No one can read a persons intent. The second half single play that stopped the hurry up was a player in a cast. Keep in mind that the player going down has to sit out for 3 plays. That's a huge risk as your back up comes in for those 3 plays. Your really gambling. If it's really a cramp or a hand in a cast. 3 plays are nough time to recover.
The fact is SK kicked Bomber Butt on this "Any Given Sunday" and it's up to the Bombers to return the favor next week. The way the Riders are presently playing. I highly doubt that will happen. I expect next week's rematch in Winnipeg (not calling the rematch that derogatory racist name) might as well call it "Water Mellon Bowl" or a few other racist names it could be called. Why use a comment from an ex-player\kickers who purpousley intended bigotry in his statement. Picking on the Hill Folks to make a statement for 2 Prairie rivals needs to stop. We are changing the names of teams. Change the name of this rematch. Truthfully the proper name for bragging rights should be the "Pride of the Prairie" rematch.

A fan who cares about others.

Ive been saying it all along - its not just what you do, its also how you do it. The disrespect Jones displayed towards career riders is the issue. The repeated faking of injuries by the Rider defence yesterday is another example of why its hard to support a guy with those types of philosophies.

Ill give him this, the team appears to have turned a corner, and just in the nick of time.

Anonymous said...

Thats fine - then Jones should have simply stated that and thanked those players for their time here and moved on. He instead low balled them during negotiations and publically insulted one of them. That is the issue.

Anonymous said...

Once again the I hate everything group is on here. Not me, I see all the blemishes of our team but they are way less than they used to be and mostly do to missed assignments against a team playing their best football in a few years. Rest up team, next week will be a tough one but you walked into Edmonton and BC and proved you can play with the top teams in their stadium. Watch your game film and we'll see you in a week.

Anonymous said...

And you can prove this how?

Anonymous said...

What proof do you have the injuries are fake?

Anonymous said...

I don't know if we will win the noise battle that TSN is doing cause of the way the stadiums are constructed. Winnipeg has a curvy metal roof that reverberates the noise more than our sound absorbing teflon roof. Don't get me wrong, we were loud and proud yesterday but two different structures. We make more noise but they have to amplify or manufacture their noise thru the structure to make it louder. But what would be nice is to know our stadium was louder at the end of the game then theirs after this upcoming game as the Riders win in Winnipeg and keep their fans quiet.

Anonymous said...

Yes. I have had real bad cramps and it is more than five or ten minutes before you are ready to walk away with an ear to ear grin.

Another great day at the new Taylor Field. Another Rider win and a Bomber loss and great weather. Does it get any better. Go Riders!!

Anonymous said...

Who says the injuries were Fake? cry baby losers! Are you therapists?
The only player that Jones said was mediocre was Durant and the proof is in the pudding!
Jones released high paid players because their agent refused to negotiate.
Jones released them very early so they could catch on with other teams. How is this insulting.
Are you negative nellies upset because his plans are working and you have your head stuck where the sun doesn't shine?
Why do people still bring up names from the past (Miller) who had some limited success? I liked the guy to but that water is long under the bridge.
Where are all the commenters who said Riders would not win any games, would lose all games against the west and never win on the road against the west?

Loved the one hand catch by Carter. Fantastic game to watch and best Rider team to watch in 4 years. It's just fantastic!

No, Jones said that Doubles had performed as an average quarterback. The stats and Doubles' play over this current season seemed to prove him right. I guess, though, that Jones will never be in your good books just cause you hold a grudge over that.

If you think that the way that Jones handled Dressler, Chick, Getzlaf and Durant was classy, intelligent and displayed good leadership, then you also would have been among those that booed the great Ron Lancaster, had you been old enough at the time. There are just things that adults hopefully know how to handle with class and respect, be it personal or business related. Jones does not have that talent. He knows only arrogance fed by his huge ego.
