CAPITAL LINCOLN RECAP: BLUE BOMBERS 48 ROUGHRIDERS 28

WINNIPEG - Receiver Clarence Denmark and linebacker Maurice Leggett each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers halted the Saskatchewan Roughriders' three-game win streak with a 48-28 victory on Saturday.

Leggett returned a punt 97 yards for a TD and also intercepted Riders quarterback Kevin Glenn and ran 54 yards for a major in front of a sold-out crowd of 33,134 at Investors Group Field.

Denmark grabbed TD passes of 12 and 18 yards from quarterback Matt Nichols as Winnipeg improved its record to 8-3.

Saskatchewan (5-5) also had some explosive plays in the rematch that failed to follow up on the Riders' 38-24 victory in last weekend's Labour Day Classic.

The Riders put up a pair of long catch-and-run touchdowns, an 88-yarder by Duron Carter and a 75-yard reception from Naaman Roosevelt.

Winnipeg's scoring also included backup quarterback Dan LeFevour plunging in for a one-yard major and receiver Ryan Lankford catching a 23-yard TD reception. Kicker Justin Medlock went wide on a 48-yard field-goal attempt, but hit one from 36 yards out. He made all six of his converts and added singles of 84, 85 and 90 yards.

Saskatchewan got a one-yard TD run from Winnipeg native Kienan LaFrance, who was replacing injured running back Cameron Marshall. Backup quarterback Brandon Bridge sprinted 10 yards for a score, leaping over the goal-line.

Riders kicker Tyler Crapigna was good on two converts. A two-point convert attempt on Roosevelt's TD failed, but was good on Bridge's score.

Nichols completed 24 of 37 pass attempts for 282 yards with three TDs and no interceptions. Glenn was 15 of 22 for 327 yards with two TDs and two picks, but didn't play the second half. Bridge went the rest of the way and was 4 of 8 for 67 yards and an interception.

The teams were tied 7-7 after the first quarter, but Winnipeg held leads of 29-20 lead at halftime and 38-28 after three quarters.

Saskatchewan's first drive of the game was cut short when Bombers linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox intercepted Glenn. It didn't lead to anything as Medlock went wide right on his 48-yard field-goal attempt.

Denmark caught his 12-yard TD pass at 6:29, but Saskatchewan responded with Carter's 88-yard burst down the sidelines as he evaded a tackle attempt by Bombers defensive back T.J. Heath. After his TD, Carter and several teammates did a dance on Winnipeg's goal-line.

In Saskatchewan's home win last weekend, Carter celebrated a TD with fans along the back wall of the end zone and was spit on by a Bombers fan. He said prior to the rematch that he was going to avoid the end zones at Investors Group Field.

Leggett's punt return for a TD ignited the second-quarter scoring. Usual returner Kevin Fogg appeared to act like the ball was coming to his side of the field to try to confuse the cover team.

Saskatchewan conceded a single to make it 15-7 Winnipeg at 7:03 of the second, but then fans were treated to three touchdowns.

In almost a repeat of the Carter TD, Glenn threw the first pass of the next series to Roosevelt, who missed tackles on his way 75 yards down the field for the TD.

Denmark then caught his sixth TD of the season, LaFrance ran in his one-yard TD and LeFevour plunged one yard with five seconds left in the first half.

Winnipeg's lead climbed to 38-20 midway through the third quarter off of a pair of Medlock singles and Leggett's interception for a TD, but Bridge made it a 10-point game with his TD run at 12:29.

The fourth quarter kicked off with Lankford's TD just 26 seconds into the frame and Medlock added his field goal for the 48-28 lead.

Notes: The CFL announced next year's CFL Week will be held in Winnipeg from March 22-25. The event features the league's combine, a Hall of Fame gala dinner to announce inductees and numerous fan activities.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM CHRIS JONES

- We failed to execute in a few areas and gave them field position that led to a touchdown. The field position is hidden in there but it's tough to overcome punt return TDs and pick sixes. You can't give those up, and short fields too. It makes it hard on your football team.

- They (Winnipeg) gave up two huge plays too. Had we not given them 21 points in other facets, it could've been a much tighter game. We just can't throw interceptions for TDs and give up returns for TDs. Against good teams, you can't do it.

- There's no update on Kevin Glenn. They don't think it's broke, but even that's premature. We'll have to wait and see what it is.

- With Brandon Bridge, with 3:00 to go when we threw the TD, we shoulda probably slowed it down and took our medicine. Unfortunately he threw that last interception. It's not the full playbook as Kevin has, but it's getting there.

LB HENOC MUAMBA

- It was a really good game, first and foremost. They played better than us and they executed more often than we did.  We each threw punches, but they made more plays. It'll be a matter of consistency if we're going to win these games.

- When we don't get the early lead like we did the past few games, we need to buckle up. All in all, it was a decent game. We did a lot of good things well but there will be a few things that we'd like to fix. It's a matter of focusing on the big picture, looking at where we've been and where we're going, and look ahead.

- In every game that we play, win or lose, there's always things to learn from. That's where we are in this season. It's just a matter of looking at this game, the positives and the negatives, and move forward. We feel confident.

WR NAAMAN ROOSEVELT

- We started off slow. Then we picked it up near the end of the first half but we needed to be better in the second half. They were very physical and played better than we did today.

- They definitely schemed us. They watched film and saw what we did. They did a good job of stopping what we do best.

- We knew the crowd would be crazy, with a lot of energy. I knew they weren't going to be the same team after what we did to them last week. We have to get our intensity up early. Our slow start early really messed us up.

There was no reason for the short kick, the game was in hand. But would have been awesome if it worked.

It would seem that the Riders were not aware how important this game is.

Mistakes, Mistakes, Mistakes. And lots of lack of execution. Not the same confident team from the last 3 games.

Matt Dunigan has to be the most irritating biased commentator on tv

Anonymous said...

Three areas cost the Riders the game 1) Questionable play calling and timing for both onside kicks give The Bombers great field position which led to TDs. 2)Blown calls by the refs in the pass interference (tripped on is own feet) and the unnecessary roughing on a clear tackle didn't help. 3) Bad positioning on kickoffs led to free points for the Bombers. Give the Bombers credit they came to play and the Riders didn't execute. No time to dwell, need to get refocused for a trip out East to play the Cats.

Someone should tell Matt his blue bloomers are showing.

I'm a Jones supporter but the turning point of the game for me was the short kick call in first half!

Take the 14 pts away from the Pick 6 and the Punt return where nobody knew where the ball was and It still was a winnable game. Those 2 fakes on a punt and a kickoff were ill timed for sure. But that Wpg defense is surely suspect and wont last long in the playoffs. Riders just have to stay tied or ahead of BC and they will get to the Grey Cup through the east. Sask and Calgary in the Grey Cup!!!

They out scored us big time thanks to the Terrible coaching calls of Jones and his very stupid short kick plays. We were in the game and now he is saying that because of interceptions and bad plays by the players we lost. Jones, take a deep breath and look at yourself in the mirror because "YOU BLEW THIS ONE" !.
Also Matt Dunigan should have been wearing a Bomber uniform with his sickening Bias so called broadcasting. Referees didn't help in this one and why did Jones keep his flag in his oicket all day. That also cost us.

Anonymous said...

So let's see what caused this loss. The refs were against us bombers had the wind all four quarters the sun kept shifting was in riders eyes all day. The bombers wouldn't allow the gopher in the stadium without a ticket... oh yes Roddy listening on the radio and had to keep adjusting the volume as your voice gets less enthustiac in fourth quarter. So bombers running out the clock kept it under 50. Only in a nine team league do you have crossover imagine nfl nhl or any serious league had a playoff system like that ...

Jones badly outcoached, one game closer to seeing his taillights.

when you have a 5'8" QB who has never been a winner, this is what you get. Bad reads, bad decisions, bad passes, and is never durable to be around when the chips are down. We traded for him, so this is where Vernon Adams has to change the game. It's time for people to realize Glenn will never be anything more than he has always been. Their QB played better than ours. That's why we lost!

Morgan said...

For the future, Craig Dickensen should refrain from calling short kicks until he gets some players who actually want to recover the kick. Tough to recover a kick when you get outwilled that badly. That play was the whole game in a nut shell... One team wanted the win and one team couldn't care less.

Darren Muller said...

Look Rider faithful. The Bombers came to play in every facet of the game. Yes we counterpunched but some ridiculous coaching decisions simply kept this game out of reach. Added to that a porous defence with a 3 man rush that will continue to give first downs quite obligingly on 2nd and whatever will lead to losses in any league. I had a bad feeling today and the Riders fulfilled that with ease. Maybe our defence was reading how good they are. Well the word GRIEVOUS!! Is applicable. Fans here love seeing opposing quarterbacks on their ass. Not sitting back all day in a lawn chair throwing strikes to wide open receivers. Do we have a Defensive Co Ordinator?

Anonymous said...

Wow. So many reasons. Maybe the hotel served them pulp free OJ and they didn't get their fibre, maybe carter had a moose allergy and we knew it, maybe we gave them a hard bench and the players' tushies were sore.

Anonymous said...

You complain about Dunnigan but yet the whole league has to put up with Green Glen Suitor whose waaaay to biased towards Sask. Guess you're only happy when the commentator is kissing your @$$

Anonymous said...

Jone's and crew were easily outcoached by O'Shea. The Bombers played harder and a little better on both sides of the line. Nichols was a better qb than Glen granted he had more time to throw. The noisy crowd helped. That is why the Bombers won.

I'll take substandard part time officiating over challenge flags every time. Although it baffles the mind how Andre and crew have never improved after all thes years.
Good luck to Winnipeg the rest of the way. The Riders may still make the playoffs. I hope to see a rematch then.

Just reading some posts and was listening to the post game show, just some comments I wanna make too...
1) relax a bit the riders are not as good some people think they are and not as bad as people think they are. Let's try and not over react one way or another, Winnipeg is a very good football team probably second best team in cfl, and going into back to back games, I think a split in the games was a very legit expectation

2). Coaching.... cue the Jones haters when the riders loose, kinda become predictable. I liked the onside attempt in the second, why save it for late in the game when the other team expects it? Bit of an element of surprise that could have turned the game around for the riders, just never worked out. The Riders had a lot going against them so why not?? 5 weeks ago looking into the stretch of 5 games the riders were facing and to go 3-2 I think is a good indication Chris Jones is doing a good job as a rider coach and a good job rebuilding this team. If it was so easy to rebuild and win in the cfl as some fans argue everyone would never loose. Trust the process

3) refs... yes they were inconsistent yesterday, and the big calls seem like they all went against the riders, but whining about them is as bad as the bomber fans whining about the fake injuries. CFL refs are real inconsistent, look every team gets jobbed by them once in a while we only remember the bad calls that go against the riders, and every team benifits from them once in a while but we don't remember and stew about those calls for days.

4) Kevin glenn... why is this guy not appreciated more? Look everyone knows he is a stop gap qb until the riders find their long term answer... seems to be the story of his career, but how many pro football players have played at a high level for 10 plus seasons? How many coaches and systems has this guy seen and adjusted to and found success and a way to keep his career alive In a results based industry? His career stats show he has been more then capable and the fact he has played on so many teams shows that smart football people have wanted Kevin Glenn on their team. Whenever this guy is done playing football, I would like to think he would have potential as a future coach in the CFL.

Outcoached!!!

Great catch by Robb Bagg!

I see all the trolls are out again. The ones that didn't have the balls to show up the last 3 games. Jones this and Kevin Glen that. Man you guys are as annoying as spitting blue bomber fans. You would be the same twerps calling for Dickenson and Bo's head after they lost to Montreal.
How did the Bombers do when they played in Regina? They didn't fair very well in a loud and hostile environment. Put your stupidity back in your pocket and save it for another day. When you go play into a loud and hostile environment full of backwoods, bad breathed and toothless fans like IGF in Winnipeg. It's a tough place to think and play. Hell the air has a stench from all of the bacteria gummed toothless fans. Up to this point. This new team hasn't faced the raw ugliness of the Bomber crowd when they are jacked up on Manitoba Bison piss they call beer. Last year no one figured the Riders were a threat. After having their asses handed to them last week. Both the Bombers and their fans were out for blood. Since they can't draw blood with no teeth. They had to use other means. Chalk it up to a learning experience.
Even once you start finding your groove as a team. You are going to get out played now and then.
The Bombers are in their 4th year of the OShea experiment. The Riders are in year 1.5
Take a chill pill.

Reality at its best

Winning the LDC doesn't actually mean a lot, losing the Banjo bowl doesn't actually mean a lot. All the talk of rebuild complete, hosting a playoff game, best team in the league etc was a little overblown. Maybe this week we can discuss football in an intelligent manner?

This was a typical Labor Day rematch, kick butt one week, get your butt kicked the next week. Too bad because we can all see the potential of our team but they are not a mature enough team to make mistakes that they do. Not too worried about this game but they have to start playing better consistently. Planning the touchdown celebrations before playing the football game, really? Defense, where were you yesterday? Special teams, major problems. Coaches, how about perfecting everyone's assignments before throwing in the trick plays. Let's just focus on next week and play good solid football without the drama, without the over the top celebrations, without trying to overthink the game. Come on Riders, you're better than this, start showing your fans you want to be playing football in Novenber.

Clay P said...

Simply amazing how when Riders lose a game, it is basically Jone's fault. Well whose fault was it here on Labour Day????????????
Riders won 3 in a row, & critic's where pretty quite. Lose one in 4 games & the so called arm chair coaches are all over the coaching staff & players.
Give me a break all you critics. Who won a pile of games last year & were outclassed, by a team that had not won anywhere near the amount of games, but one game , the Grey Cup . Anyway any team can win any game.
Do these critics want to go back to the old ways??

This is a last place team. Until that changes it is silly to talk about playoffs crossovers or Qb's of the future or past. Unless that changes it is another lost season. They are showing promise without a doubt but they are a last place team today. A rebuild can not be deemed a success while the team is in last place. Jone's genius shouldn't be worshipped while steering a last place team. You can be butt hurt about the Bomber fan's red cards but I heard a lot of joy late Friday and Saturday about how Lulay's injury was great for the riders...As for the crazed few who think this team is better without Glenn, you are about to get your wish

Scott Thompson said...

Well said Bart. They were simply outplayed and out coached. We missed Nick James up the middle. Hopefully we get some players back from the 6 soon. Kudos to the Bomber fans for giving their team a boost. Look out Tabbies the boys will be pissed next week.

Anonymous said...

Hey Mr. Blair, did the Bombers look like they were scared of playing the Riders? Didn't look like it.

Good loss for the Riders. Maybe brings them down to earth and they will get back to work. They were starting to get too cocky. A little humbling losing like that due to mistakes and lack of execution. Get back to playing with more urgency and intensity and not thinking it will just happen for them. Effort leads to reward and we didn't see enough of that on Saturday afternoon.

The reason you dont try the short kick is because it was an unnecessary risk to take at that point in the game. It handed momentum back to the bombers and they never looked back for the rest of the game.

Anonymous said...

Glenn threw a pick six that basically sealed the game for the bombers, so there's that.

Anonymous said...

Jones went back to his 'rush three' defense and Nichol had all day to find his receivers. Coaches decision, plain and simple.

Anonymous said...

Have to say it is the biggest mistake to make it only a one challenge a game rule...we depend on our refs making proper calls on the field, when have the refs went without making a dozen mistakes a game...absolute horrible to watch now when they are deciding the outcome of the game but since they did change it the riders have been winning mostly..seems that is what the riders did after whining about the salary cap...changes to the league to keep all rider nation from crying. What's next ridernation, a ten point lead so you babies can make play offs.

Veteran QB throwing an easy pick 6, two DB's dropping easy int's, dropping catchable balls, failing to cover a return because our cover team was too stupid to figure out what they were doing, no defensive front pressure etc etc… take your pick! Ultimately it was poor QB play that started the ball rolling. Some of the other things wouldn't have happened had Glenn done his job. This happens every year with him. It's a book to read if you want to know the outcome every time. Like the movie Groundhog Day!

Stop hacking on Saskatchewan's Head Coach! He's doing the best he can considering the talent the GM gave him to work with.

I have to agree with one of the comments regarding our punt cover team. In all my days of watching Pro football. I have never seen a group look so out of place like the cover team did on that Play. You know where the ball is being punted. Why would you follow a bunch of bomber players deception instead of looking to where the ball was to be kicked. You have a top notch punter and he places the ball where it's suppose to go. I sure hope every one on the Riders cover teams learned a lesson by embarrassing themself and never let something like that happen again.
As for blaming Glen for the pick six. The previous game Matt Nichols threw 2 INTs and one as a few yards short of a pick six. Here is the difference from Bomber media and Bomber fans compared to Rider Media and fans. The Media (especially CJME) bring the fans anger in towards the team. They run story's and scoups that make the angry fan lash out at the team and players.
In Winnipeg the Voice of the Bombers and Doug Brown Masterfully directed those same type of fans with their anger towards the Riders. By calling the Riders fakers and cheaters and despicable. They did a masterful job and that IGF crowd was so worked up towards the Riders and the Bombers went about their jobs all week with ZERO noise coming at them for their poor display at Mosaic.
So keep it up angry loud mouthed fans. Keep spewing your hatred towards the Riders Coaching staff and Rider players. It's such a pro active thing to do. It's going to help speed up the rebuild. Good grief!

Outcoached this time, and poor referee calls, but can't let the ref's be an excuse. The bomber's staff definitely made more of the proper adjustments to secure the win.

As far as QB's - I only seen Marquise Williams take a couple snaps, but he truly intrigued me and I would like to see more. So I realize this might be in a few years but I hope to see him play in the future.

Adams hasn't impressed me much, but all he has been given is run plays, and Bridge, I am impressed with his size and power but he looks "green", but the Winnipeg defense is a force for a rookie QB.
