10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR CAPITAL GMC

10 Things I Think I Think

1 - REBUILD COMPLETE: I made that declaration at the conclusion of Saskatchewan's 38-24 CFL win over Winnipeg in the Labour Day Classic. Although Coach Chris Jones called it "premature", I still feel that way. One-and-a-half years into this rebuild, the Riders can now compete (and beat) West Division teams and are a team we can be proud of. Getting to the top of the mountain is another story entirely.

2 - MOVING ON UP: It's undeniable that this team has made major strides under Chris Jones. At 5-4, they're now out of the West Division basement for the first time since the Harper Administration and, as of today, they're in a playoff spot. The scary thing for the rest of the CFL is that the Rider players feel they're just getting started. They now possess the only thing they were missing: confidence.

3 - SPITS & GIGGLES: Duron Carter is a much better man than me. The star Rider receiver says he was spat upon by a Bomber fan on Sunday but the fan's ejection from the game is punishment enough. If someone did that to me, I'd lose my ever-loving mind. I feel that's the most heinous act of disrespect, not to mention the potential spreading of disease.

4 - "FAKING": The Blue Bombers say the Riders were faking injuries to slow down the game on Sunday and the Riders say they weren't. Now there's a CFL investigation into the matter. What will they find? NOTHING. This has been going on for at least 30 years and I'm shocked Winnipeg actually thinks that's why they lost the game.

And need we remind the Bombers and their radio crew that Matt Miller's "flop" against the Argonauts cost their own fan  "Karen" $1-million?

5 - UNDER PROTEST: If Saskatchewan loses TSN's contest for the CFL's loudest stadium this week, I will NOT acknowledge the results. TSN didn't announce the criteria until DURING the telecast of the Labour Day Classic! Winnipeg fans were able to watch, sit back, and plot how to win the contest in Week 12. Weak sauce.

6 - ROCKY, ROCKY, ROCKY: One of the great stories of Labour Day lore is Rider QB Rocky Butler who, in his first career start, rushed for 3 TD's to lead Sask to an upset win over the Bombers in 2002. Rocky is now working as a QB coach at Position Specific Training at his alma mater Hofstra University in New York.

7 - PARADISE CITY: I heard Evraz Place and the City of Regina wrung up a cool $1-million in liquor sales at last week's Guns N' Roses show. That's in ONE night. More shows anyone?

8 - BRING HER BACK: The Saskatchewan Roughriders are 2-0 when Teagan Littlechief sings Oh Canada. Pats fans will know she helped the Pats on their way to the WHL Final last year as she's the regular anthem singer at the Brandt Centre. Here's hoping we see Teagan the rest of the way! What's her magic?!

9 - JOHN FRENZY: Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Lynch turns 80 today. There was a campaign and petition a few years ago to get the football maven inducted into the Plaza of Honour but it fell on deaf ears. I've accepted that the Plaza won't honour Saskatchewan media personalities, but don't care for the policy.

10 - JUST NOTES: Thanks to the Pats for handing out lineups outside their Neutral Zone Store at weekend games. It's a lost gesture in sports ... The Pats host Brandon on Saturday ... The Rams cleaned up on UBC 36-20 in Week 1 at Mosaic Stadium and LB Nick Cross was named Defensive Player of the Week. Regina is at Calgary on Friday ... And it's the Game of the Year for the Regina Thunder on Saturday as they visit the Saskatoon Hilltops.

Y'er Welcome

This fan noise competition is flawed I agree! Is this a Suitor thing? because he really seems to be the guy most excited about it! I actually found his ranting about it to be very annoying during the LDC telecast by TSN. Means nothing to me, just win baby!

4 - Faking injuries is a common practice in every sport....so no Blue Bomber has ever done that? Yeah right!

5 - As long as the Riders play like they did Sunday, Bomber fans will spend more time booing their own team and making snakes out of their beer cups.

7 - I still say they should have spent the money and put a retractable roof on the new stadium, they could fill it with concerts and events year round! But sadly it will sit empty generating no major revenue from December through April. With the extra cost of the roof, the stadium could hold more events and possibly be paid off faster. So all those winter concerts will continue to go to Saskatoon.

Agree with Luc. rebuild not complete until they win a championship. Also, Calgary wins like this every week, so no need to get overhyped just yet. That said, believe Riders will win again this week. The reason it wont be larger is no Marshall. He is good. Can someone ask Jones when is Moncrief back and why isn't AJ Jefferson in the lineup. Seems crazy that carter is the backup cornerback and kick returner when the team is dressing so many DLinemen. Surely Jefferson has more value than Longino.

Any injury updates?

#4 "Faking" You are going to see what you are paid to see Rod but it doesn't mean it's what actually happened.

Ambrosie is trying to speed up the game, that's why he changed the challenge rule. Now you are endorsing slowing it down?

That's good progressive thinking, LOL.

#9 John Frenzy;

You campaigning to get Lynch into the Plaza is akin to politicians giving them selves a raise.

Anonymous said...

Of course they faked injury!! Nobody should get indignant that we are accused!! Big deal!

They created the miss 3 play rule, because it's standard operating procedure to fake injury!! Every league in virtually every sport uses it somewhere.

Maybe they need to bump it up to 5 plays. Needs to be adjusted if lots of abuse occurs.

#5. Come on Rod, what does it matter when the noise criteria was announced? Peg fans wouldn't have made a difference here anyway. Stop being childish. By the way I am a lifelong Rider fan. (73 years old) I agree with most things you write here but I think you are wrong on this one. Just saying

The next time Teagan Littlechief sings the national anthem at a Rider game, she should be invited to perform a couple of songs a half time. She has an amazing voice, and it would be a lot more entertaining than a watermelon-eating contest!

Anonymous said...

Teagan I believe was also the singer for Game 6 of the Pats/T-Birds series. So that one didn't work out.

Anonymous said...

Dumb comment! Nothing childish here! His comments reflect poor planning by TSN that gives Winnipeg the advantage! But who really cares!.....Riders need to win!

Anonymous said...

Suitor is getting tired! TSN needs some new blood! Remember Ronnie when he did CBC? He was great!

Anonymous said...

"How dumb can you be"

Suggestion for half time at next years LDC.
Have a whine off with Bomber fans, I'm sure you'll find some real gems.
- We would have won the Grey Cup if our quarterback wasn't
hurt .... waaaaaa
- We would have won if the Riders weren't faking injuries ...
waaaaaa
The sound meter would be off the chart with laughter.

Bands do not do stadium tours in the winter, only in the spring, summer and fall. The winter concerts that go to Saskatoon are because they have a large "arena". The bands travelling in the winter only bring their arena video screens, speakers, setup, etc., and would not play in Mosaic even if we had a roof. Now if we get a larger arena then Saskatoon they will come to Regina instead of Saskatoon.

Anonymous said...

Lynch as a broadcaster, has done more to support and defend this team than many of the "builders" who at times decide to remain silent rather than tarnish their reputation!

Team rebuild;
Close but not there yet. Saskatchewan Roughriders team won't be allowed to stagnate under Chris Jones direction so don't get too attached to your favorite players like the fanbase did under the last loser regime who held on far too long to certain old overpriced athletes past their prime. Chris Jones and company are always on the lookout for the next one. So sit back, enjoy the ride, Its only going to get better in the very near future.

Your comment makes no sense! Not very smart when it comes to football are you!

The fact that people seem to be cognizant and potentially concerned about the results of the 'noise debate' is what I find troubling. We know what we are; we are loud, proud and the self - annointed proudest fans in the league (which is likely true). That being said, I could care less if the Bombers fans make more noise this weekend. I care about our position in the standings which means winning the games on the field, not the media friendly side games.

The guy from Porcupine Plain was pretty good at the anthem too. Both of them are better than Jeff. He tried to hard to be a Johnny Reid type.

Wonder if Lynch will offer up an apology to Jones and to Reynolds as well. He was venting last year that "this would never happen under a Jim Hopson administration. Someone ought to remind Lynch that it was the Hopson administration that created the mess and it's taken Reynolds/Jones this long to clean it up. All the while being crapped on by the fair weather fans in this province. Mind you, Lynch is simply looking after his Old Boys Club colleagues. May they never be given the chance to run this team ever again.

Haven't even officially lost the loudest fans contest and already you're crying about the results, typical Suckskatchewan behaviour. Rod you have to be the biggest moron that covers the cfl. For someone whose teams "rebuild complete" you certainly whine a lot about anything that doesn't seem to give the Riders an unfair advantage. You talk a lot of talk Rod but no substance to back it up. You will lose on Saturday and take your rightful place in the basement of the west standings.

#4 I am more concerned with their centre "Jerking" before each snap.

That looked flipping stupid, and it is ridiculous that they let that go. He wasn't pointing to anything on defence, and was definitely an attempt to draw the defence offside.

Anonymous said...

Moose Jaw Warriors have been providing line up sheets to fans as they enter the rink for years. Pats are just now catching on? So Regiaish.

Anonymous said...

Time to dig out some clips from the archives of John Lynch from the 70's when he was doing Rider games and getting exited about a play during a Rider vs Bomber game or going on a rank.

Anonymous said...

The rebuild is over for sure, but as with every team good or bad, the tweaking never ends and the injuries need to be plugged in with top notch talent.

Anonymous said...

The Eskimos signing of Derel Walker is a huge one! This puts them at par with the Riders and Lions for best receiving core. They may soon be in a position to beat the Stamps in the race for the Grey Cup should Bowman and others get healthy.

Anonymous said...

The noise competition means diddly squat in the CFL standings. Loud is loud and if you don't make adjustments for loud noise you likely struggle in the game. A focused team figures out how to win no matter what. A petty vengeful team plays to get revenge but doesn't always play smart. Hopefully we are the more focused team. Hanging on to silly little distractions will not help.

So who gets the profits from the liquor sales at the concert and concessions. It's my understanding that Evraz takes these profits and the city doesn't.

Anonymous said...

Evraz is a City Run organization nit-wit. They are essentially one and the same.

There's a clip on TSN.ca called 3 Downs, all you brainwashed green lettuce eating blindmen should watch it. It's Dave Naylor and Matthew Scianetti discussing the Riders 'faking' and Chris Jones' lack of ethics.

If my Grand Daughter was just turning 3 I could read this column to her as a BED TIME STORY. Most of you on here are So CHILDISH it is pitiful. As for you Rod, Keep up the good work.

Whiney Rider fans on here...what else is new. You are the saddest province with the saddest fans in all of Canada. You really need to learn some humility. If 1/10 of the BS the Riders have pulled was done by anyone else you can bet the Crider fans would be screaming bloody murder but it's ok for you to cheat and break the rules. Pathetic just like your football team #Riderssuck

Anonymous said...

I am very surprised that Mr. Gunderson's Yorkton does not know that the Hopson era of the Riders was one with the second most sustained success of any 10 year period in Rider's 100 year history: 3 Grey Cup appearances with a home Grey Cup win, first place in the west, beating the Stamps in the playoffs etc. But for the 13t man, Mr. Hopson would have another Grey Cup ring in his collection. It makes one wonder if Mr. GY has some weird personal beef with Mr. JH or perhaps he was denied entry to the "old boys" club. Some one mail Mr GY a copy of Jim's book please.

Does anyone other than idiots listen to Naylor or Scanetti. They are idiots on the Toronto Sports Channel. Its a shame a good sports channel hires idiots like them

Hey Doug Brown,

Just because no one reads your article doesn't mean you have to comment here.

Maybe ask why u lost...not about so called fake injuries....this is the reason you haven't won a championship for almost three decades.

Anonymous said...

I went to the Free Press page and read Doug Brown's blog and every word of it made sense. Ambrosie will deal with it ASAP. Mark my words, before the end of the season injured players will have to miss 5 or 6 plays instead of 3.

Win with class.

This was an act of war upon RiderNation, be prepared Winnipeg like North Korea is for the USA invasion this weekend.

Hopson was an awesome Rider president and gets credit for his achievements from everybody except the Gundersons.
Players and fans loved him. He won.

Great work as always

Anonymous said...

Well that's fine then. Every team does it. Every team will pay. Your point

Anonymous said...

Brown"s a moron. Coming from a team that had sand kicked in it's face and were soundly thrashed. This was a game they though they had a chance of winning…good luck with that. Whine about anything is the Winnipeg mantra…very Winnipegish!

Ambrosie will come up with nothing because nothing happened. Just some sour grapes by his hometown Bombers. Don't like him very much at any rate.

Riders are on their way but still need a franchise QB because Glenn won't last the year..he never has.

Lyle Pederson said...

Lynch ... aka ... John Frenzy ... Is a Rider icon. He has been a fan's fan for all the years I have been a Rider supporter. He is truly a 'builder' who personifies the ultimate of fan passion for the Riders.

Anonymous said...

Some anon posted; "Ambrosie will come up with nothing because nothing happened."

Why would you comment when it's obvious you didn't watch the game?

DB

Anonymous said...

Why because he's not @$$ kissing the "mighty Riders"? Like pull your head outta your backside. He's done nothing to favor Winnipeg. Again with the conspiracy theories from the tin foil hat brigade. There are 8 other teams in the league that matter not just whatever the deluded fans of Sask want

Anonymous said...

The bombers are in big trouble this coming weekend.Jones will have his troops ready to turn it up a notch.
As far as the noise goes..even a well constructed roof built to conduct sound won't help this team out.And the rider fans will be very loud in Winnipeg as they are in every stadium in north America.

Anonymous said...

"the rider fans will be very loud in Winnipeg as they are in every stadium in north America."

Yeh, right, dream on.

There's college games down south that have twice the crowd the Riders have ever drawn.
