RIDERS STILL WAITING ON OWENS

The "Flyin' Hawaiian" is still grounded.

Veteran receiver/returner Chad Owens has been practicing at what appears to be full speed this week with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they prepare to visit the Edmonton Eskimos Friday night (7:30 pm, TSN, CKRM).

A nagging injury - believed to be lower body - has prevented the 35-year old from making his Saskatchewan debut after signing with the club this off-season.

And it appears he'll have to wait a little longer.

"I want to make sure that Chad is completely, 100% healthy," said Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones after Tuesday's closed practice. "I'm watching him very closely because I know what a fresh CO looks like. And then, when the opportunity comes at the right time, he'll go in the game."

So for the time being, the Roughriders are content to go with rookie Christion Jones returning punts. The freshman from the Alabama Crimson Tide program has been very impressive this season.

"He's averaging 19.9 per return," Jones said of his namesake. "He needs to make sure he fields all balls cleanly. He's certainly a confident player. He's learning our offense. He's certainly added a lot to our football team."

The Roughriders will hold an open practice on Wednesday at 11:00 am at Leibel Field. They'll depart for this week's game on Thursday.

Off topic Rod...

What's happening at the Brandt center these days?

Any word on the renos? I know there doing boards and glass. However what are they going to do with the million bucks they got to spruce it up?

Paint the stairs white like the last mem cup lol?

I'm not sure.

I wish they'd get rid of that BC Lions orange on all Evraz old buildings. Brandt makes blue farm augers (Pats colours)

I'm thinking they are shopping him around?

"He isnt 100%" wink wink nudge nudge.

Would be wonderful to see Owens in action are the Labour Day Classic!

Owens is 35, coming off injuries, sucking money out of the club. Just release him and move on.

What does "fresh CO" mean?

Didn't Allan Blakeney insist that the buildings be given an orange colour since his government was helping foot the tab?

hey if Christion Jones is learning from Chad, I have no problem with him being here long term. Christion Jones looked awesome so far. I am sure that I have not been so excited about our special team returns since Tristan Jackson or Corey Holmes did returns.

We'll see after the first ugly hit he takes, if he is still as brave as Owens or Holmes was.

I had those hopes for Owens when he was signed, but haven't see him yet.

I had heard the Brandt Centre was getting all new dressing rooms, media rooms and meeting rooms down under the stands at ice level.

Also, seating at the west end is in the works as well.

If Owens is on the 6 game injury list he costs nothing to the club...if otherwise then say he is sucking money out of the club but that isn't on him that is on Jones.

Surprising that the Riders would practice today on the grass field near old Taylor Field. Hope a player doesn't break an ankle in one of Gainer's buddies homes!

I agree. Every team seems to have an exciting young returner and Jones seems to be doing okay returning for the Riders. Yet they are waiting for a 35 year old to replace him. I really liked Chad Owens...five years ago. Jones can shop him around but I seriously doubt they will find a taker.

Someone's still paying him.. I believe you'd be referring to not counting against the cap. I look at him as an insurance body. We will see injuries at some point and he'll play

I think if one is on the 6 game injury list, the club still has to pay him.......I just think it doesn't count towards the salary cap for the team?????

A lot of GM's on the blog today...who cares about salary caps...what they are being paid...or if they go over the cap....remember when they won the cup and went over the cap...back then we called it a luxury tax.

Bill it is C for Chad.. O for Owens...it stemmed from the NFL star Terrel Owens being called TO.

...back when insiders called it a league bought colluded championship title.

So I guess that would be CO2 .. "Green" house gas ... - Chad Owens #2.
Rider fans will have a gas if we beat the Eskimos.
