RIDERS PRACTICE AT U OF R

The Saskatchewan Roughriders held Day 1 of their practice week at the U of R Rams field on Wednesday due to clean-up from Sunday's Guns N' Roses concert at Mosaic Stadium.

Here are some notes:

- Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones said they added Canadian kicker Brett Lauther to add depth at that position. Back-up kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk is currently on the 6-game Injured List.

- The team also announced this week they've released defensive end Mike McAdoo, who was acquired from Hamilton in the Ricky Collins trade. Jones said McAdoo wasn't in football shape.

- Rookie punt returner Christion Jones was injured in Friday's 54-31 win at Edmonton. Veterans Nic Demski and Chad Owens split reps at that position and Demski said they haven't been told who will return punts in Sunday's Labour Day Classic versus Winnipeg (2:00 pm, TSN, 620 CKRM).

- Asked about the team's current 2-game winning streak, Jones said he's been saying all year that they have a good team. It was just a matter of putting all facets together in a game and they've done that in their past two victories.

- Asked if the Riders have turned the corner, Jones said they hope so.

- Jones was asked about the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' controversial hiring of reviled coach Art Briles this week but he said "It's not my place to say". Quarterback Kevin Glenn was asked about it as well, and his response was "No comment".

- Meanwhile Glenn threw some gas on the fire that is the debate over who has the CFL's loudest fans: Winnipeg or Saskatchewan?

"Oh Rider fans. Most definitely. It's just the way it is," Glenn answered immediately. "I hate to say it and have all the Winnipeg fans see it, because I played there. But I'll be honest. It's Rider fans."

I asked Glenn if he would answer the same way if he was still playing for Winnipeg.

"Probably so but I probably would've lied and said Bomber fans," Glenn continued. "The Bomber fans understand, seriously. If I was in blue, I would've lied and said Bomber fans, but it would've been a lie."

- Let the games begin!

I am a Jones backer BUT why trade a very good receiver for an out for shape player and then release him? Was there no homework done?

Do we get any compensation for McAdoo?

I have not been a Jones fan but I have to admit I could be very wrong about this guy. They beat the hell out of my beloved Lions but I thought perhaps my Lions had a bad game. But now the Eskimos game and I'm starting to believe Jones may be the answer in Sask after all. I spend time in Sask every summer and Rider fans are the best in the league HANDS DOWN! I was in Rock Glenn (population a few hundred at most) a year ago and as usual, riders gear, flags and signs all over town. If you had our 60,000 seat stadium you'd fill it every game most likely. We can't manage 25000 unless the Riders are in town. So it's been hard to watch the team struggle in recent years and when they hired Jones I thought it would be a disaster. So it's good to see the fans gets some fantastic wins and to see the Riders play well. Go Lions!

Another brilliant move by Chris Jones general manager.

Kevin Glenn doesn't know if he's coming or going, he's fibbing the local yokal toothless hicks in Saskatchewan as "all world facility" Investors Group Field Stadium in Winnipeg is the best venue, loudest venue in all of Canada.

A very good receiver? Maybe, but he couldn't crack our line-up and wouldn't sign the 6-game injury list waiver (i don't blame him).
He would need to be released or activated. Who comes out of the line-up?

Jones the GM fleeced again!

I was in winnipeg for the Eskies Bombers game and their fans are the LOUDEST. In the cfl HANDS DOWN ,riders a distant 2nd or 3rd if they are lucky

Holley cannot even make it on the field so what is all the Ricky Collins nonsense. Riders are stacked at receiver. It was either cut him, cheat him on the injury list, or trade him for peanuts so he gets a shot at a CFL career, not something in the card in Sask.

Move on

IGF is falling apart

Riders got a 6th round pick for Collins.

JPR said...

Yah its great with the falling apart concrete, water flowing in when it rains yah its a real jem.

Anonymous said...

OH, pulleaze! The depth at import behind their starting 4 is Owens. Deep receiving group my arse. Yeah they got a 6th riound pick but gave up a 7th. Another bad trade. If Jones gave away Glenn for nothing, all the Jones lovers would say he won that trade too. Wok are you kidding?

How about the toothless hicks in Manitoba?? LOL

Riders will come out and Kick the Blum Bloomers asses on Sunday and it will be the Loudest Crowd ever. Back to Blum Bloomer country the following week and the game will be closer but Riders will still come out strong and show the non believers what we are all about with a close win and a much quieter crowd in Manitoba Country. " GO RIDERS GO".

No WR depth you say? Right, so there Caleb Holley who would be a starter on many other CFL teams, Chad Owens, Antwane Grant who's on the PR and started one game earlier this season, plus Christion Jones the returner ( when healthy is also a backup WR and RB. So yes we are really going to miss that 5th backup import WR who couldn't make our roster.

JPR actually come and take a look. It's all interlocking brick now no concrete. Thanks for showing your ignorance.

You do not have he loudest fans, plain and simple. You are not Canada's team, plain and simple. You will not win on Sunday, plain and simple. The delusion is strong in Riderville this year...more than normal. You cannot even come up with your own jokes. You just take the ones that the WHOLE country use on you and try to turn them around, sad but hey that's Suckskatchewan for ya

^^^ Go for a long walk dude.

Is Moncrief back? Needed to cover Harris. Couldn't Jones have packaged Collins with something and got something back better than a PR guy who he cut? Not sure on his GM skills, but he has recruited some real athletes. Maybe Murphy should do the trades..

Anonymous said...

Why Rod? You and your indoctrinated Rider fans call out every team in the league and then get pissed when the other teams fans call you out? Guess this confirms Rider fans can dish it out but certainly can't take it

stephen preston said...

There was no room for Collins on the roster - that's the price of having such a deep WR group and needing to start two NI receivers because of the Oline.

Glad to see I'm in your head Rod, otherwise why do you continue to respond. Unless of course you know that it's all been smoke and mirrors the last 2 weeks and the true Riders will be exposed on Sunday by the mighty Blue.

BombersJets said...

Well at the very least, the rivalry between the Bombers and Riders seems to be back with certainty! I'm not going to come on here and say Bombers fans are louder or which stadium is better (i've been to both and they are clearly the 2 best in the league), but i will say that i think that the next 2 weeks will be 2 very competitive games that finally matter! Us prairie fans have suffered enough over the years where often by Labour Day these games are largely irrelveant in the standings for one if not both teams. Glad to see that's changed and I look forward to 2 hotly contested matchups! Go Blue!

I wish we'd get rid of glenn for nothing. He bores me, even when he plays well.

Don't Reply to so many of these JERKS Rod , that are so ignorant they probably don't know the difference between a Football and a Sanitary Napkin Pad. it seems the more you respond the worse they get. Go Riders. And Rod you do a great job on here as it is so keep it up Bud.

Hey Rod. What a bunch of loonaticks on the blog today.
The anti Rider fan's should go somewhere else. You & the rest of the Rider supporters don't need this crap.

You have Carter, Grant, Roosevelt & Holley as your usual starting 4 imports when you aren't using 3 import OL. Backups - Owens & A. Grant. That's not depth. Owens is well past his best before date & A. Grant is who??? So, in other words if you had injuries like the Eskimos, for example, where they are without Bowman, Hazleton & Zylstra for a few games, their top 3 receivers, they can bring in a Mitchell & Williams who both have multiple 100 yard games & Stafford. If you lose Grant, Roosevelt & Carter - your top 3, you're going to play with Holley, Owens & A. Grant. That's your depth????? If you think there is any similarity there & you're going to scare anyone with those 3, good luck. The same goes for your National depth at receiver. Lose Bagg & Demski & you're toast. 34 year old Cory Watson has 120 more YAC yards than those 2 combined. Williams, 4th on the depth chart in Edmonton, has more 100 yard games than Carter, B. Grant, Roosevelt, Holley, Demski & Bagg COMBINED. You guys don't know what depth is, seriously.

RE; LOUDEST STADIUM CHALLENGE,
Solution to who has the loudest stadium, bring out the noise meters, measure the decibels. Winnipeg wins with it's fanbase hands down. Bombers also have the nicest stadium in Canada bar none. Saskatchewan, their stadium (bland outdated design) falls to 3rd behind BC Place. BUT... Regina stadium a vast improvement upgrade over what they once had, kudos.

I'd be upset too if I were coming up on 3 decades without a cup. Rider fans have been there, haven't had to worry about that for a while. Bomber fans are riding high with a seemingly good season so far, we'll see how well they fair coming into our house, with the team clicking like they are. LDC has always been on the side of the Rider's!

Last two games our Defense has been lights out, letting the majority of the points accumulate in garbage time. Offense the same, Marshall showing he can be a premiere back in this league, Carter and Roosevelt showing why they are elite receivers. Special teams scoring points for us. Everything is working as it should be.

We have been told that we couldn't win against West teams, we have twice in a row now. We can't win in the West on the road, same result, taking out Edmonton in Commonwealth. The Rider's secondary has tightened up over the first time we played, and the offense has gotten better.

Fact is Saskatchewan has the widest spread fan base, the loudest fans, and the best stadium in the league. We be rolling, and Bombers will be the next ones to fall.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Riders have the LOUDEST fans - you can't get them to shut up about how great they are. Wpg may be on a drought in Cups but it doesn't stretch 105 years. I think 4 cups in that time & 15 participation awards isn't too much to write home about. No need for a thumb in Regina if it comes to counting championships.

Anonymous said...

Yup Winnipeg did real well right up to 1990. 26 years since a cup, that's gotta hurt. I'm hoping they keep that streak alive!

Go Rider's!

Our stadium is better than yours! Oh yah, my stadium is louder than yours! Well, with that theme being covered you might say, how about instead focusing on the fact that we are going to have two teams who are playing well meet in two meaningful games in two weeks. Enjoy!
