RIDERS BACK TO WORK

So goes the life of Duron Carter.

One week after being fined by the CFL for a pregame altercation in Week 5 in Calgary, the flamboyant Saskatchewan receiver was named a CFL Player of the Week on Tuesday for a 9-reception, 131-yard, 2-touchdown performance in Week 6 versus Toronto.

The first of his two touchdowns is being called the Catch of the Year and has been replayed endlessly on highlight shows in both the Canada and the U.S.

"Yeahhhh when I'm involved it tends to do stuff like that," Carter smiled after Tuesday's practice. "I don't know why. I'm just glad it's getting a lot of attention, a lot of attention for the league, and hopefully everybody's watching the next game."

That next game is Saturday when the Riders visit the B.C. Lions (5:00 pm Sask Time, TSN, 620 CKRM Rider Radio Network).

Carter's father is Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter, who Duron says was watching Saturday's game with interest.

"He kind of just expects it," the younger Carter shrugged. "He said 'Finally!' That was his first text to me."

As the Riders show signs of life as the season progresses, Carter is emerging as one of the biggest stars on Canada's most popular football team. The Fort Lauderdale, FL product says Saskatchewan is starting to feel like home.

"Definitely. It's very homey," Carter grinned. "I feel like my charisma and the Rider Nation accepting me is sort of like a perfect match. I hope I can be here for awhile."

Meanwhile Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones seemed unimpressed by Carter's boast to the media that he hopes to top The Catch with a behind-the-back touchdown reception in the weeks ahead.

"Well let's just catch the football," Jones scorned. "When the ball is thrown, let's just catch the ball. If they happen to be great catches, then that's great. I don't think you ever say 'I'm gonna do this' or 'I'm gonna do that'. Let's just make the routine play."

As far as Carter's volatility goes - both positive and negative - Jones says that's just the way he is.

"He's a very excitable young man," Jones continued. "He's got a good heart. He really does. He means well. You just have to keep reminding him what the situations are and that type thing. We're just going day-by-day and week-by-week with him."

NOTES: Jones revealed that veteran kicker Tyler Crapigna will miss Saturday's game at BC with "a pull". He'll be replaced by sophomore Quinn Van Gylswyk - a Vancouver product ... Star returner Chad Owens has come off the 6-game Injured List and practiced on Tuesday but will not play against the Lions.

He should do a handstand and catch it with his legs.

Good comments by the coach, Duron Carter needs to use all that enthusiasm to be the best player he can be and it doesn't have to be flashy to be good. Take nothing away from a fabulous catch though, it was a great athletic play. Just want to say how much I respect Chris Jones for sticking to his game plan so far. Creating a competitive team has been a challenge and will continue to be for a while yet. Slowly we are seeing the progression.

We need Chad Owens getting back into the game. He's a game changer with a lot of experience while adding to the offence. Sask Roughriders going to be lethal dangerous when they have all their assets on the field of play clicking.

Go Roughriders!

The Eskies are gonna be more lethal than ANY CFL. Team once they get their 16 players healthy and clicking again .Oh wait they are already lethal dangerous at 5-0 and already the best team hands down ,by the way Carter only had one good game out of 5 and has a huge salary he doesnt scare ANYBODY.

Actually Carter was laughing when he made the comments about a behind the back catch. He followed that up by saying he was afraid of trying that and looking stupid if he flubbed it. Gotta love the media trying to get Jones all fired up by continuing to try to ask the question. I guess can't let the good story of him giving the ball to the young girl run for too long. Gotta stir up the pot with some controversy.

Thank you Rod! Had a completely miserable day. Drove back from Estevan and listened to the Cage. OMG, you, Myers and Scruffy had me laughing the whole way back.

Show as always is great!

Chad Owens a game changer? Maybe a few years ago guy. Doesn't sound like he will be suited up until after the bye week. If he has any impact post labour day I'd be surprised.

Hey Eskimos poster, no one is scared of the Eskimos either. Maybe some seals are but I don't think anyone else is "scared" in pro sports. Get real man.

Greg Morris is one of the CFL's top kick returners thus far, and a Canadian to boot. Could be hard for Chad to get back the position.

When did people get a sense of entitlement?

So it goes. The always humble Duron Carter reminding us of his charisma & how things always happen when he"s around. Just as predicted - no distraction to the team. Once a boy, always a boy.

You idiots once again put the other guys to shame with Watergate. OMG!!

Really! You read way to much into stuff. Enjoy the games and cheer.

Always needing to try find a way to spin the negativity.

This guy obviously isn't a Rider fan. Trolls be hatin'

I don't understand all the comments about Carter being volatile, what has he done?
Ya he pushed a coach down during the game should not have happened but who hasn't done something stupid in their life?
Dude doesn't get into trouble with the law, and by all accounts seems to be extremely positive and engaging.
Sure he is confident in his abilities, I don't get people they bitch when athletes are controlled and just repeat catch phrases, yet here is a guy that injects some life and for some reason people want to hate him..... I don't get it.
Honestly over the last few years I am becoming annoyed as a rider fan with the attitudes and opinions of what feels like a large portion of this fan base. Everyone wanted to run Darian out of town till he was gone then all you hear is whining about how he was the greatest QB in franchise history......

I agree with Duke yesterday just SHUT UP! (and now I am going to take my own advice)

Lived in Estevan for 19 years. Get the whole miserable day thing. Glad the cage helps you out.

Is there a more obnoxious fan base in pro sports than those that cheer for teams from that frozen wasteland known as Edmonton. We sympathize with Rider fans on that. Our fan base is way less annoying for both our hockey and football teams.

Perhaps the people that feel the need to trash Duron all the time should take some advice from Kacey Musgraves. Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy.

I agree! I think Owens loves the atmosphere here in Saskatchewan. I wish him the best!

Myers was as excited as a little girl at a Bieber concert! My ears are still ringing!

You wonder why so many people get tired of the Riders. Burnham makes a fantastic catch which trends for a day or two, commented upon on CFL website & everyone moves on. There are no less than 5 articles involving the Carter catch in the local news & you're still talking about it. Kinda sad.

Hell there are still talking about the Carter catch South of the 49th Parallel.
Just an FYI for the EE fan. The 49th Parallel is the Border between Canada and the United States.
There is still discussion about the catch in Eastern Canada as well.
Dosent matter what team Carter plays for. That catch is going to be roughy up the rest of the year. Or until someone makes a better catch.
Besides the Burnham catch was anti climatic. The referee didn't even signal a TD. It looked like it had hit the ground.

Nice to see Canada's team at the top of the standings... Good for the league.

Anti-climatic because it was a BC catch?? What makes you think it's an Eskie fan commenting on the Carter catch? WRONG!! Some of you Rider fans have to get over your inferiority complex about the Eskimos. You boasted how stealing Jones before the Cup had barely been hoisted & gleefully talked about how the defection would bring a string of Eskimos along with the whole team of coaches & start the demise of the Eskimos. Well, how is that working out for you? Must hurt so obviously it MUST be Eskie fans rubbing your noses in it. Turns out the jilted bride is doing well. You don't have to be an Eskimo fan to see the irony & the angst over the Esk success which only magnifies the Rider lack of same. What's next if Jones doesn't work out? My guess is Hervey will be looked at as the next saviour. You guys can't help yourselves. Funny, really funny.
