CHICK DEALT TO ESKIMOS

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Sunday that the football club has acquired a second round pick in the 2018 CFL Draft from the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for international defensive end John Chick and a fifth round pick in the 2018 CFL Draft.

Chick, 34, has appeared in all eight of Hamilton’s games this season, posting 16 defensive tackles, two quarterback sacks and a forced fumble. The 6-4, 253-pound native of Gillette, Wyoming, has registered 56 defensive tackles, 16 sacks and five forced fumbles in 26 games with the Tiger-Cats over the last-two seasons (2016-17), and was named a CFL All-Star and Hamilton’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2016.

In eight CFL seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2007-09, 2013-15) and Tiger-Cats (2016-17), Chick, a product of Utah State, has registered 226 defensive tackles, 69 quarterback sacks, one interception and 15 forced fumbles in 117 career games.

Chick and Getzlaf now in the hunt for another Grey Cup ring in their twilight year. Could a Durant for Franklin now be in the works??

Anonymous said...

I wonder who Durant will be going to next after last nights display.

Anonymous said...

So sad to see him decline. Should have hung up the cleats three seasons ago as should Dressier in Winnipeg, Durant in Montreal. Sen'ior Jones got it correct.

Haha, yes, Chick must be declining, sincse he first place eskimos wanted him to join their team. Nice logic youve got there.

The unemployment line!

Anonymous said...

Wow! A second round pick (Canadian) for an import. What is Edmonton doing?

Anonymous said...

Your joking right?

Anonymous said...

Maybe Chick can bring some of that bad karma from Hamilton and deliver it to the evil empire!

Anonymous said...

Esks only want him because of injuries. He will be unemployed next year or later this year. All the players Jones let go will be unemployed next year

Edmonton isn't building they are there. Their window is open.

BC and Sask will be the ones to watch in the battle for the cross-over to the east. Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg locks in the west.

I wonder how many fans got on the blower and went on an anti-Durant rant on their post-game call-in shows .... but the problem for Montreal is that they are an aging team with a bleak future. The need to get on with what the Riders have done in terms of revitalization and fast if they want to compete in the next few years. Chip Cox, Bowman, Lewis, Logan, Hebert, etc like old Riders Chick, Getzlaf and Dressler are not where the future is at.

I'll bet Chick performs in Edmonton, different DC, different schemes. The same thing happens on the other side of the ball too.
Zack Collaris was almost unbeatable when Tommie Condell was Hamilton's OC.
Condell moves on and Zack can't buy a win.
It's not always the player's fault but for some reason the player always gets the blame.
John Chick still has a motor that won't quit, he'll be back.

Edmonton is not that dumb!

The other way around, "The Sk. Footbal God Mr. Kent Austin" a football guru/genius. He fleeced Edmonton for a aging player past his primetime for the valuable 2nd round pick next draft.

desperate for d lineman it showed on Thursday

Anonymous said...

Great! Get to see one of my favorite d ends on friday in edmonton. Should be fun.

Ye Ol' Sk. Football God Mr. Kent Austin will be long gone from Oskeeville by the time it comes round to use that 2nd round pick.

At least all those kids can switch schools before fall. Otherwise a great deal for Chick going to a cup contender.

No, he''ll just step back for a time off the field of play and concentrate on his other pressing duties, righting the good ship Ti Cats.
PS,
Riders be draping another big azz banner of the Ye Ol' "Sk. Football God Mr. Kent Austin" over at New Mo Stadium soon. He's personally responsible for 3 of 4 Grey Cups in Riderville.

Yeah he is such a dismal player that he is usually the captain of his defence and past 3 years...2014 - 15 sacks, 2015 - 11 sacks, 2016 - 14 sacks...explain where the drop off is? It is more you rider fans throwing a yet good player under the bus to make you feel like you did something right. Jones has done nothing right for you yet and you defend him, proves the pride stands before the intelligence...guess that is what you expect from rider fans.

Also a CFL all star of 2016 but yet no good to you guys...you guys are funny. Hope he plays this week and makes your line look like crap

Chick was traded bc Hamilton is having a fire sale. Their season is over. Chick is a veteran, a respected leader and all around good guy. If I had a dollar, I'd bet that they shipped him off out of respect to him as a player - give him a chance at a ring.

My two cents.

I'm a long-time Roughrider fan but I'm not sure I'm sure I want to admit it.

There's a bunch of so called Rider fans that just can't help but crucify (in their postings) John Chick, Weston Dressler, Darian Durant and Chris Getzlaf. What's wrong with you people?

Every one of those men won two Grey Cup rings while playing for the Roughriders. These athletes helped win exactly half of this franchise's championships.

Like I said, I'm not that proud of being a Roughrider fan because I don't want to be categorized in the same column as you guys.

players get old some point in their life not matter how many championships or player awards.....im sure the trainers dont wanna be changing depends every quarter....lmao...just saying

Yes, some of the complainers on here constantly berate our better players, and then they wonder why we have only 4 cups in 100 years. I honestly think that they enjoy it when we lose, obviously they have no lives, or there from diff. Sites trying to bring us down so their teams can prosper.??????

Anonymous said...

To SWC: I totally agree with you. Why do our heros become villains the day after they leave here? Does it make you all feel bettér to badmouth them? Can't you just hope that they do well with their new team? I do not see the same attitude coming from the fans of other teams when their great players move on to another team. Even if any fan here stands up for someone like Chick or Dressler, we are chastised and criticized. But some of us will always be fans of Chick, Dressler, and , yes, even Durant. It is indeed embarrassing. They are a part of Rider history that won a Grey Cup here and I will always be proud of them in the same way that I still have respect for Lancaster, Reed, Elgaard, etc. Some of you make it very difficult to be a Rider fan because I do not want to be a part of that mentality.

Anonymous said...

Lol did someone suggest Dressler should retire? He sure looked like he still has it when he burned the Riders secondary there in the home opener. Can't see Weston hanging his cleats up anytime soon. He still has a solid shot at cracking 1000 yards despite being injured

Anonymous said...

I agree with SWC
This fan base has to stop verbally bashing players that gave their blood, sweat and tears for this franchise.
If your hurt that bad that they continued to try and make a living by playing for the competition. Go to the games and cheer as loud as you can when their teams offence is on the field.
All of the players in question have spoken fondly of their time in SK as well as the support they received from Rider fans. Why sour that relationship. All of them will one day be in the Riders Plaza of Honor. So why disrespect them now.

Anonymous said...

I agree SWC but a sane Rider fan also knows that their is time when teams must move on from aging and over paid players. That's not disrespect. Criticizing the coach on the sole merit he cut or traded their favourite player but not listening to reason is just as disrespectful.

Is Chick a $260,000 player?
Is Dressler a $225,000 player?
Is Getzlaf more valuable to the Riders than Bagg and Demski?
Would you sign Darian Durant to $450,000?

With all that money in the lineup the Riders were 3-15 in 2015. Just two years after those veterans led the Riders to the Grey Cup. That Cup is now four years ago. Regardless of our current direction, the right move was to move on from those players.

The Tiger-Cats are a solid 7-19 since signing Chick. They too see he is aging and likely on his final season, at what cost?

Anonymous said...

The difference is that your comments were all logical and respectful. No problem with them. But if you have been reading comments on this and other sites, you know that a lot of comments have been leveled at Chick, Dressler, Getzlaf and Durant that have been rude and denigrating. It is not necessarily that these players were cut or traded but the manner in which they have been treated since they left that are embarrassing to some of us.

Anonymous said...

One of the reasons we only have 4 cups in our history is we couldn't afford to buy cups like BC, Edmonton and Toronto did

Anonymous said...

So letting Chick go because of contract but then yet sign a couple players with paying them a bonus to watch them leave soon after makes sense also.

CM said...

You guys are off point from a Riders perspective. Signed to reasonable contracts, Chick is worth a second round pick. Not sure on Dressler. Durant at a reasonable contract is worth far more than Willy, and he was traded for a first. Bottom line, Jonesy could have renegotiated and signed all 3 of them to reasonable deals and then traded them if he wanted to go younger. At least get assets back, rather than a donut. Jonesy needs help on asset mgt. An experienced GM minimizes taking goose eggs for established players.

Anonymous said...

Wake up CM. Their agent wouldn't renegotiate their contracts so they were deemed to expensive to keep. End of discussion

Anonymous said...

CM you are mistaken......what makes you think the 3 you speak of would have taken less? ditching Durant was the best move the team made, just look how pathetic he is in Montreal, why even at a lower wage would anyone want him?

Anonymous said...

You guys couldnt afford to buy more then four cups...that sir is a personable problem because every team had the same opportunity.

Anonymous said...

Edmonton needed some quality on the D-Line, leadership and skill, since they have been ravaged with injuries - Chick will help in many ways. Yes he is older and in his twilight years of his career, but look at Edmonton's record - they know talent.

Quote from Marshall Ferguson - "Guys respected Chick in Hamilton. His resume demanded it and his play confirmed it. In trading Chick the Tiger-Cats have parted ways with a special man who I believe was of the highest character in the locker room."

Good Luck to Chick, just not too much luck on this Friday.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda ... YAWN!

Anonymous said...

Kent sticking it to the riders, Pissed jones right off.

Anonymous said...

Hey coulda woulda shoulda

COULDA beat Montreal - but Durant won. WOULDA beat Bombers - but Dressler laid 124 yards & 2 TD's on you. SHOULDA had 2 more wins. But you DIDN'T. That's Kharma. Fact is, some of these Riders still got game. Do I blame Jones for dropping them - no. I get it. But the way he did it was low class. And it's come back to bite him in the rear end. Those losses may cost you guys a playoff spot & it may cost Jones his job. Have a little respect for the guys who did a lot for this team & brought you a cup. No guarantees Jones will. Until he does, all it is is talk.

Anonymous said...

Time will tell but I think that Chick can contribute to the Eskimos. I would love to see him with another Grey Cup ring. Guys with Chick's character and talent are not exactly a dime a dozen.

CM said...

To the Anon who told me to wake up. The players, except Durant, ended up signing for less elsewhere! So they did renegotiate. Riders could have signed DD then traded him to get a better return. Given they all wanted to stay of course they would have negotiated with Jonesy. You gotta look at the facts before you comment.
