10 THINGS I THINK I THINK

10 Things I Think I Think

1 - The Riders' performance in Saturday's 30-15 loss at BC is indefensible. To not show up in back-to-back road games in the West is mind-boggling to say the least. The Rider Nation is outraged and fans of other teams are using the Riders as a punchline. That hurts but until they prove otherwise, they'll have to endure the abuse. Perhaps they'll be mad enough to take it out on the Lions on Sunday at New Mosaic Stadium.

2 - Online fan polls have Brandon Bridge as the runaway favourite to start next Sunday's home game against BC. Stop it. He threw two almost uncontested TD's in garbage time against the bored Lions. Right now, Kevin Glenn still represents this team's best chance to win and therefore he will start against BC at Mosaic Stadium.

3 - Oldtimers were grumbling on Twitter that "How DARE you compare Kevin Glenn to Ron Lancaster!" after KG passed the Little General for #6 all-time in CFL passing yards on Saturday night. Hey, the numbers are the numbers dude.

4 - 2-4 is hardly catastrophic. In reality, the record should be reversed and although it isn't, we still believe the Riders are good enough to compete in the West. I've heard the term "mental block" bantied about. We've said many times a rebuild takes 1 1/2 years to complete in the CFL and the Riders are on schedule to potentially be a juggernaut by Labour Day. And if they wind up 4th in the West with a crossover playoff berth, we'd all gladly accept that.

5 - Hats off to both Edmonton and Winnipeg. NOBODY saw this coming. The Esks are off to their best start in 56 years and the Bombers are proving to be a ballsy, guts-out team. But we'll remind you that it's August. Early August, at that. Lots can and will change. However those two teams have made it a tough time to be rebuilding in the West.

6 - The Buzz In The League: The Eskimos WILL trade back-up QB James Franklin knowing full well they likely won't be able to sign him in free agency next winter. But they won't likely trade him within the West and probably won't do it soon unless the Argos make an offer they can't refuse.

7 - False Buzz: There was a rumour the Riders' Chris Jones is now being represented by agent Leigh "Show Me The Money" Steinberg. Jones tells me that rumour is FALSE, and he's still being represented by the same agent he always has. #FakeNews

8 - The attendance for Saturday's game was 23,415; a season high for the Lions. 10 years ago, the Riders and Lions attracted 55,000 for regular season games at BC Place! And crowds of 35,000 against other western opponents were routine back then.

The footprint for the CFL in the Lower Mainland is there. It simply needs to be marketed better.

Because let's be honest: the CFL spanks MLS in terms of the on-field product.

9 - An article on a blog which covers the Texas A&M Aggies reported today former NFL bad boy Johnny Manziel would like to get into coaching. The column said Johnny Manziel considered a comeback in the CFL this winter but declined when some NFL teams showed interest. None of it ever materialized. The disturbing thing about the column is that it didn't say if Manziel is sober or not, and it's his addictions issues which cost him his playing career.

It sounds like Manziel would like to coach if it means he could still drink! That's the trouble with us alcoholics: we're deal-makers.

10 - There's a saying with Southern Saskatchewan hockey people that says as soon as Buffalo Days are over, it's hockey season. So bust out that red, white & blue gear and flood the ice! I'm eager to use my four Pats season tickets this year and call a lot of games on TV.

Y'er welcome,
RP

Pt 2: if Glenn represents the best chance to win then the Riders are in big trouble.

Where's this poll? I want to vote for Brandon and Marquise.

2 , 3, and 4 are way off. Bridge was being brought down, he through a 50 yard bomb to Carter who was covered very well. Either our offensive line is that bad or BC was still bringing a lot of pressure. Even if our record was 4-2 it's those 2 losses that show the truth. Against the lower to middle of the pack teams we have played ok. Against the elite teams so far this season we have bombed and that is what shows where this team truly is. 2-4 might not be that bad if we competed against Calgary and BC, which we did not. Statistics are statistics... KG is not the same player as the little general. Does not have the same leadership, the same charisma....

I hope you understand that there is a difference between accomplishing the yardage milestone by Glenn and being comparable to Lancaster at this point. Aside from the cup (which Ronnie also won as a coach) he had so many more awards throughout his career whereas Glenn has what? Three? I don't think Glenn has enough years left in his career to match Ronnie. He sure won't playing for our current Riders.

"Riders are on schedule to potentially be a juggernaut by Labour Day."

Of what year?

Anonymous said...

The record should be reversed to 4 and 2...why because you think so, they lost these games straight up and there record is there record so accept it...but he missed a game winning field goal, yep your right zeds a loss you get for it.

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, they could be 4-2, they could also be 6-0.....BUT THEY ARE 2-4!!

You are correct.

Love the fact it is properly bring told finally that Franklin will be going to the east.

1.Time to start calling it "Mosiac Stadium and not New Mosiac Stadium.Everyone going there will still find it.
2.Sorry,we need to start Bridge or Williams, and bring KG in off the bench when needed.
3.Congrats to Kevin Glenn
4.4th in the west! ahead of who?
5.Would this NOBODY be the Riders coaching staff?
6.Lets give Bridge and Williams some starts this year, before Kevin goes down with injuries.
7.Good for Coach Jones either way.
8.Market it as "the place to be" for the teenagers, and they will come.keep them interested.
9.At the 19 minute mark, fog the stage with a fog machine for cover, shoot a tranquilizer dart, roll Scott behind the curtain and bring out the cheerleaders.
10.Great Entertainment, for the people who have never been to a Pats game.what are you waiting for.

If Glenn is a HOF candidate simply because few qb's have done something, then put David Archer in. He is one of a few that have thrown for 6000 yards in a season.

Glenn has only been an all-star once. In half of his 17 seasons he hasn't even been the best qb on his team. He has taken a lot of really good teams and guided them to 4th place finishes and early playoff exits.

The Hall of Fame should be for greatness and he just doesn't cut it.

#1 The Riders did show up for the Stamps and Lions. They lost to far better teams. Look, every team says they want to start off the game by coming out of the tunnel and outscoring the opposition in the first quarter including the Lions and Stamps. Who do you think will likely score first?
But I still see real improvement in the Riders game. At least they stopped Lulay in the red zone on BC's first two drives.
#4 I agree

Lancaster won games, Glenn more often than not loses. Who would you rather have - Glenn in his prime or Lancaster? KG is 2-13 since 2015 with the Riders. Your point is??? The Rides didn't show up in Calgary & BC?? Maybe they're just that much worse. NOBODY saw this coming?? For the record oddsmakers did. Marshall Ferguson had the Esks winning the Cup & everybody except you, Luc, Abou-Mechrek, 3 Down's Rider guy Gasson's & the Post had the Eskimos finishing higher than the Riders. Eskimo envy? Maas & Hervey still winning w/o Jones? Pining for Franklin? Glad you finally are stating the obvious. Yes Franklin will be traded. No reason to trade him till after the season in light of injuries. Why on earth would they trade him to Regina. TSN has said, among others, he'll have a bunch of suitors. Who in the East WOULDN'T want him? Argos & Als have expensive, older QB's, Collaros is highest paid in CFL, Franklin younger & may be better than Harris. So Edmonton HAS to trade him to Riders or Jones gets him for nothing in free agency??? That was never going to happen. You're spot on, Rod. Better start developing your ownQB unless you wanna bring in Vince Young again.

Anonymous said...

Dex says it right "the hall of fame should be for greatness".
#4. It should have said by Labour Day the Riders will have taken it in the juggernaut again. We've said many times that Corey Chamblins record could have been better, that John Herrera was an NFL great coach, Vince Young would be the starter on this team. That we have the greatest receivers in the league. That if our Oline stays healthy they will lead us to the promised land. If we believed what was professed by the pundits we would all be glass eyed.

Anonymous said...

I reality the 2-4 record should be reversed...????
The record is who they are....i believe you said yourself, sorry dude, thats the numbers.
The other teams are playing down to the riders game, only calgary and b.c. held the throttle to the floor.

Anonymous said...

This Rider team could score 1st 2nd and 3rd and be up 21-0 by the end of the 1st quarter and I still wouldn't get excited about them winning . They don't have it to get Started and they don't have it to Finish it. Any team that builds up an early lead on them just seems to change their game plan completely or they just throw in the towel. I really can't see them beating B.C. this week end and looking forward I see Winnipeg bombing them in back to back games. And again this year folks:: 'THEY JUST HAVEN'T GOT IT" !

Curt Dittmer said...

Even if Franklin gets traded to the East I don't see him signing a new contract. He knows there is interest in his services and it would be foolish of him to not wait until free agency kicks in to maximize his contract dollars. Glenn has always been a placeholder until Franklin gets here. Two questions:

1. What is the Riders plan if they can't land Franklin for next season? They have not demonstrated an ability to find QBs.
2. What happens if Franklin isn't as good as he is rumored to be? There is an inordinate amount of hype for a QB that has minimal game time under his belt.

Anonymous said...

It should be noted that when Ron Lancaster played the season was only sixteen games, not the eighteen games the season is now. Add to that, for most of the years that Lancaster played, he had George Reed playing beside him, still arguably the best running back that the CFL has ever seen. Ron Lancaster was AN elite QB; I would not put Glenn any where close to Lancaster's talent and "football smarts" level.
#4.. stop it....they don't describe the games; they just put them in the win/loss column. It is what it is.

Anonymous said...

So... Saskatchewan Roughriders inquiry to Collin Kapernick player service's... that would be awesome!

Keven Glenn = Jay Cutler.

RP doubling down on the green koolaid

While Hamilton realizes there is a problem and they make changes. Riderville stays the same because Jones has the best system. Glenn hasn't done a thing in the Cfl and this year will be no different.

Franklin will go to the highest bidder in the off-season, no matter what happens this season.

Prediction for remainder of the year's games:
BC Loss
EDM Loss
WPG Win
WPG Loss
HAM Win (maybe, we always have a history of losing to bad teams)
CAL Loss
OTT Loss
TOR Loss
OTT Win
CAL Loss
MTL Win (maybe, Durant will want revenge at Mosaic)
EDM Loss
End the season 7 - 11 at best

Time to start spelling "MOSAIC" right too there pal.

Rider math for you Rod ....

Riders need to go 8-4-0 the rest of the way if they want to make the playoffs. This would include sweeping Labour Day & Banjo Bowl. Winnipeg would need to be 6-6-0 at best. Both would be 10-8 and Riders would have the tie-breaker (2-1).

If we split LD & BB (more likely) then we need to go 9-3 (LOL).

Here is where we start "reaching";
We probably need to win at home Sunday. If not, we need to be 9-2 the rest of the way. Then we go to Edmonton. We will lose. What would make anyone think we have the ability to win on the road?

Reality is, we are not an 8-4 or 9-3 team. Not even close.

We need to win Sunday, probably lose in Edm and then sweep LD/BB. 5-5-0 with eight games left. 5-3-0 down the stretch would make playoffs (only two games in those eight against Edm/CAL/BC).

After Banjo Bowl, Winnipeg playes Edm/CAL/BC six times. Riders only have two more match-ups.

The above is all unlikely obviously. Lose Sunday, it's done. No debate. (Also, assuming Ottawa doesn't wake up in the east)

This team has lots of talent but no direction and leadership. None. You can come on here and talk about Glenn or Bagg or Labatte. Nope. Who's the leader of defense? Correct, no one. This is a me, me, me, me team right now. Again, lots of talent ....... lots of tools but no tool-box (no Little General, no Mike Reilly, no Elimimian/Lulay). Leadership can also come from the coaching staff......... well, umm, forget I brought that up.

To those who point out that the two TD's by Bridge came during garbage time, consider that Glenn's last series in the middle of the 4th quarter was also during garbage time. What did he do? A lackluster 2 and out. At least Bridge scored.

Always enjoy the blog. Good to stir it up lol. #3 - can't compare stats from different era's. Look at todays NFL QB's stats versus say Aikman. Rules are different now. No one would say Romo was better than Aikman but stats say he comparable. Everyone who watches football would say you cant put Romo in same league as Aikman. Same goes for Lancaster/ Glenn. Lancaster was ALL CFL and went to 5 cups, playoffs like 14 straight years. Has Glenn been all CFL once? Look at his winning % vs Lancaster (or other true greats). Riders wont beat the better teams until they get a GM who can improve the talent level especially on the lines. As for VY, wish he was here it would be way more entertaining. Lets face it, when Riders played CYG and BC it was a snoozer. In fact going back to last year Jones' team has been real crappy to watch. Save for a handful (like 5-7 out of 24) of decent games.

John Knight said...

All we need to do is get a new offensive coordinater and fire the defensive defensive coordinator so he can try to do his main job as Head Coach

Anonymous said...

First I can't understand giving the ball to the opposition to start the game then rushing 3 Dline. The opposition gets in a rhythm early scores first leaving the Riders to play catch up. That eliminates a balanced attack. I watched the Lions rush a minimum of 4 sometimes 5. The sports people mentioned the Lions had a "smothering" defence. Wonder why? Even when the Riders rushed 4 they couldn't sack Lulay. He is mobile and escaped many times when KG would have been sacked.

Time to roll with the young guns and build for the future. Most fans would embrace that. There is no sense in stating it should be this or that. It is what it is. The Riders are beaten by better teams. One play does not make a win or loss.

Jimywrink said...

As a life long Rider/CFL fan now living on the west coast I am often disappointed by the media coverage the Lions get. Global news is always all about the White caps and Bob lenarduzzi is often on the sports shows. The lions are rapidly homecoming a fourth tier sport in Vancouver losing # 3 to the Seahawks and it is due in a large part to their lack of face time and that is not good for them or the league. Wally and company are getting thumped in marketing like the Riders were by the Lions last week.

Hey Roddy, #10, is that your ad online selling your Pats tickets opening night for $200/ticket? I thought you were a fan. Can't wait for start of season, go Pats Go!

Anonymous said...

Ya right; The Argos will trade big time assets to get Franklin only to lose him in the off season! How idiotic is that? Considering what the Argos have tied up in Ricky Ray it's lunacy. Popp/Trestman won't give away his teams assets only to lose a guy for nothing.

Franklin knows that he is worth much more in "the off season" so he won't sign until he sees the dollars he might bring. The Argos would need to trade or lose Ray's contract somehow and that won't be easy. At any rate the highest bidder will get Franklin in free agency.

Anonymous said...

It should be noted that when Ron Lancaster played the regular season was sixteen games, not the eighteen game regular season played now. Plus Ronnie had arguably the best running back the CFL has ever seen in George Reed. Without Reed, Ronnie would have thrown the ball more. In short, Lancaster was just the far superior QB.

Does Michael Ball still think Addison Richards will be a better CFLer than Nic Demski?

Anonymous said...

Glen - yes he's hof. He's top ten passes so of course he's accomplished something. Career backup but wth how do you deny him? What teams jersey would he wear if he's inducted?

Bridge - amazes me how the fans anoint the backup of the day as the starter. In training camp there was a QB that had a good 1/2. In a preseason game. He was the new saviour. He got cut. Can't even remember his name.

Franklin - why the hype? He's thrown about a 100 passes in almost 3 years and 40+ games and somehow he's the next great one? Maybe he's good but I have no memory of him playing and I doubt anyone else honestly does either.

I think starting bridge is throwing in the towel for the year. Too early. Maybe let him play more but I'm not giving up hope and I have never really seen a rookie QB do very well his first season.

Curt. A team isn't going to trade for Franklin w/o already having a verbal in place. They get to talk to him prior to finalizing a deal. Sure he played for Jones 2 years ago but since then so have ex-Esks Chambers, Lawrence, Korrey Jones as well as ex-Riders Getzlaf & Steinhauer. Franklin is no dummy & I'm sure has noticed how many free agents have come & gone through Regina. Those players just mentioned all play for Edmonton now & can tell Franklin all about the gong show in Regina. There's no love lost between Getzlaf & the others & Chris Jones. Why would he sign with the Riders??? He'll have plenty of offers. Rod is right. The odds of Franklin signing here are next to none. It's time to stop obsessing over things out of our control

Anonymous said...

Curt Dittmer you state that Franklin won't sign a new contract after being traded to an east team and will run for dollars in Regina. I beg to differ and can tell you this, before any trade happens to an east team that the east team will ask for permission to talk to Franklin so they can work out details of a new contract or they simply won't trade for him easy enough...they aren't going to give anything up in a trade for zero back.

Now that there are NFL pre-season games in the tube, it would be good to know which players are on each team's neg list. Many of these players we watch will be cut and be available in the fall. I wonder which ones the Riders are looking for.

I used to wonder why Rod can't admit this Rider thing is not working then he answered me with the last sentence in #9.

I would start Kevin always, but if things don't progress then give one of the other young guys a shot, you don't necessarily have to start someone else, just have Kevin help them if he goes out. You can always put Kevin back in if the other guy gets schwacked.

Of course we gladly accept a crossover birth for the playoffs. We can't win in the West, so let's be the East champs. Then we would only have a one game playoff, winner take all, against a western team to win the grey cup which is being played out east for our benefit. I like those odds.

You do realize the ads you see reflect the sites or network of sites you visited?

These are not Rods ad's.

Basically when you visited the ? site it placed a cookie in your browser, which is placed there by their ad network. When you visit other sites that are part of that ad network, it uses that cookie to recognize you and serves up the ad. It's called retargeting.

It works presumably because since you have already visited the ? site, they assume you are interested in ? and therefore show you ads for it.

Anonymous said...

You accept the wild card birth...first you need to deserve the wild card birth and that means being ahead of Calgary, Edmonton, B.C, and Winnipeg, if you don't end up ahead of them 4 in the standings you do not get the crossover so good luck with that because them 4 teams will be the top 4 in the west.
