10 THINGS I THINK I THINK

10 Things I Think I Think

1 - It's another pivotal match-up for the Roughriders this Sunday as they host the BC Lions (6:00 pm, TSN, 620 CKRM Network). As lineman Brendon Labatte said this week, they're "running out of time" at 2-4. The Lions are favoured by 2-points and the forecast calls for sunshine and 27 degrees. Bring water if you're too cheap to buy it at the stadium!

It's also the Purolator Tackles Hunger game so please bring a non-perishable food item and/or a donation for the Regina Food Bank.

2 - Labatte is saying they're running out of time to save this season, not to save anyone's job. As was brought up on the SportsCage this week, Roy Shivers and Danny Barrett got 7 years to turn this franchise around in the 2000s. And now people want to tie a can to Chris Jones after only 1 1/3 seasons? Nonsense.

3 - The difference in the two situations comes down to one thing: expectations. Shivers and Barrett took over a 3-15 team after the Decade of Decay which was the 1990s. Meanwhile Jones took over a 3-15 team on the heels of the Decade of Decadence (2005-2015). Just because Jones' rebuild doesn't meet YOUR expectations, isn't his or the Riders' fault. And FYI, Shivers and Barrett missed the playoffs their first two seasons. Maybe this is why Rider President Craig Reynolds is being so patient.

4 - "Ya but Rod - Jones cut our favourite players" many of you are saying. True, but Shivers also showed Don Narcisse, Dan Farthing and Curtis Mayfield the door. The similarities between the two eras truly are striking.

5 - But a TON hinges on Sunday's game. If they don't earn a split of this 2-game series with the Lions, I expect changes in some fashion. This club seems to be in the doldrums (as evidenced by the Labatte interview) and a shake-up may be required. What shake-up might that be? I don't know. That's not up to me to decide. But it's a talented team with good coaches that can't win consistently.
What's missing?

6 - My heart's still singing with the news that Shania Twain will be this year's Grey Cup halftime act. I love Shania Twain! She checks all the boxes and there aren't many: She's Canadian and she's a world-class talent. Why the CFL would EVER go with an American act for Grey Cup is beyond me.

7 - Thank you Brad Wall. To me, the outgoing Saskatchewan Premier will go down in history as the guy who turned us from a "Have-not" province into a "Have" province. Bravo and thank you for your service to Canada's GREATEST province.

8 - Our SportsCage/Marlin Travel Ultimate Sports Trip VII went on sale this week and within 24 hours, we sold 48 of 56 spots. This year we're going to LA from Dec. 5-11 to watch the NFL's Eagles/Rams as well as the NHL's Wild/Ducks and Sens/Ducks. You can add-on Disneyland, Universal Studios and some LA Kings games too. A special treat is two SportsCage broadcasts on 620 CKRM before a live audience. Call Terry at Marlin Travel at 306-585-0055 to book your seats!

9 - Meanwhile the 2017 Plaza of Honour induction ceremony is selling out fast! On September 22 we'll induct Rider greats Wes Cates and Roger Brandvold ON THE FIELD at New Mosaic Stadium! There are ticket prices ranging from $30, $150 and $250. You can purchase yours at Riderville.com or the Mosaic Stadium box office.

10 - Two questions answered by the Riders: 1) The inflatable helmet the team enters the field through is on its way to Regina. There was a hold-up getting it built in Edmonton, and 2) the 13th Man banner is being dealt with. There are some safety issues around that magnificent addition (mostly wind related), and the team is investigating where exactly the best and safest place is to put it.

Oh, and the Solar Eclipse really isn't that interesting!

Y'er welcome.

First time ever you spelled HONOUR correctly.

What about the Pats?

True Leadership from experienced winners at the CFL level is lacking. But those kinds of players cost wayyy too much! Cheap and interchangeable parts thats the Chris Jones way! In Jones we trust!

WGB ....

No, actually the Plaza of Honour use to be spelt as Honor. This year it was changed.

The people that want Jones fired are a bunch of basement dwellers who don't know their head from their butt. It's like the losers over at Riderfans who are ranting like idiots everyday of the week wanting everybody replaced from Reynolds on down.

There are some very obvious reasons why people were more patient with Barret and Shivers. For one thing, Danny was very likeable and classy. No one was bad mouthed on their way out the door. They were smart enough to not coin any phrases like "moderately successful" and "numbers don't lie". They did not rack up $160,000 in fines, neither did they dress 102 players in year one, with very few still being around in year two. They shook hands with their opponents, win or lose, and never told any other coach to learn how to win with class. In short, they didn't make fans as angry as a lot of fans are now. After 40 years of being proud of the Riders, again win or lose, I am no longer proud of this franchise. The antics of the regime now mean that I will not cheer for them no matter what their record. I value class and refuse to support someone who has acted like a goon. I realize this is not what you want to hear and so this will not be printed. You have your opinion, I have mine and I know that I am not alone in these thoughts.

Thank you, Your Honor.

It's STILL not hockey season.

Joe "747" Adams could throw deep to. Trouble was he couldn't connect with anyone.

Yeah, and they picked Nealon over Henry. Should have been fired for that alone.

This is so much better than the crap underneath it!

Anonymous said...

Rod you know better than this.
Barrett and Shivers were in a totally different era. They had no money and there was no salary cap.
Your logic is full of holes but just for giggles I'll ask you, "What did Danny and Roy win in those seven years?"

I agree with you on #6 and #7 and as for #5 when you ask what 'shake up' is required. I'd like to suggest Steven McAdoo and John Murphy walk the plank.

FYI WGB,
correct spelling is, - honor.
Hon our? What's that mean? Something to do with on the hour?

Anonymous said...

To the want to be Yankee; Honour is spelled H-O-N-O-U-R in Canada.

Danny Barret class is complaining about being disrespected when Higgins called an unsuccessful fake punt in the playoffs. Riders won, but his comments at half time were unnecessary.

Meanwhile you can't even get the argos n Montreal on tsn 1 2 or 3 due to riveting first day PGA coverage (head slap ) .. and this is our only cfl carrier?? Found it on tsn 4, at least it's not espn 8 the "ocho " right next to dodge ball. No matter Toronto is in a heap of trouble now that glass ray is out again sorry but tressman can't save you now (see Jay cutler lol) . Anyways . Why is Toronto still needed in this league ? Move them and Canadian media get serious about this league!! This troubles me now. Seems like times are only good when our loveable loser riders are pushing the needle . Nation wide. Find a solution please guys :-(

Agree with the comments comparing Danny and Roy to the current crew.
So they cut Narco, Farthing and Mayfield but did they cut them all at the same time and try and say they were overpriced and imply they would not renegotiate? Rod you know better than to compare apples to oranges but you sure are reaching with things at times. Quit drinking the Kool-Aid some times, the water is still okay.
I didn't care for Roy but he also wasn't chief cook, bottle washer, waiter, doorman and valet all wrapped up into one. Where as Jones may have bitten off too much this time. We have seen better men than him fail.

I miss Carm's Honesty.

You nailed it, at least there is some sort of entertainment value.

After attending a few games at new Mosaic I can honestly say I'm really disappointed. I thought this was going to be the best facility in the CFL. Anyone who has been to Winnipegs stadium can clearly see it has a higher end feel to it. The lack of water fountains is also unbelievable. We blew it.

If Danny and Roy had performed like Chris Jones they would have broke the franchise. There was no money for fines back in those days.

To the second last Anonymous, now that's really funny! Even the Bomber staff knows ours is the best. Nice try though.

Was cheering hard when Danny and Roy were here. Danny was likeable and a good compliment to Roy's personality. But I thought Danny was too nice to the players, a bit lazy, and not intense enough to motivate the team past mediocrity. Jones is an alpha male, totally in charge of everything. Not afraid to bend the rules. Very different than Barrett.

Was miffed by jones last year but got over it. He has my fan support now. Realy like how hard he works and his intensity. Here's hoping for some new Mosaic magic this weekend when the green and white humble the lions with a win. GO RIDERS!

I'm a different anon but Rod that statement shows how clueless you really are. OF COURSE your stadium should be nicer...it's the newest and you learnt from 3 other cities that built recently. Take off the green goggles bud, your drivel is wearing very thin. You want to know a real joke, you claiming Suckskatchewan is Canada's greatest province...that or this column, it's hard to tell

Rod Pedersen said...

So now you're admitting our stadium is the best. It's fun toying with your mind!

To point 3 about fan's expectations. Who fans the flames of those expectations? Let's be fair, Rod. Who was predicting Riders would contend for 1st place in year 1 of Jones arrival? Who is just this week mentioning juggernaut by Labour Day? Fans hear constantly what a great young team we have & when they lose you get "well, what do you expect"? How about some realism as.provided by LaBatte?

Anonymous said...

To point 3 about fan's expectations. (continued)

For most of us Rod, you are our eyes, we religiously read your appraisals and predictions.
Then comes game day and we can use our own eyes and what we're seeing ain't nothing like what we'd been told to expect, in print or on the radio.
That's why I appreciated Brendan LaBatte's interview, he leveled with us and warned us that we'll soon be out of time. No false expectations there.

That is not necessarily patience that Reynolds is displaying. He really can't afford to pay another coach to not be here, especially in this case with Jones also being GM,etc. and getting $750,000 a year reportedly. If Reynolds is not extremely frustrated and bewildered then that is another problem. With the amount of fans on this and other sites that despise Jones and what this franchise has come to and many no longer cheering for the Riders for the first time in their lives, Reynolds better be concerned. Jones can and does ignore fans but Reynolds is basically the "keeper of the gates" and that is his problem.

It gets people like yourself to the blog. Another fish realed in.

too "cheap" to buy water? wow,i think someone needs a "double"!

I agree with the blog re cheering for the Riders for 40 years and be thoroughly disgusted. I have been a fan for over 50 years and I feel the same way. I was initially in favour of hiring JOne, but now feel like we made a mistake hiring him as both GM and coach. I didnt disagree with letting some of our stars go, but he disrespected them and now everyone wants to kick the riders. I hope that the Riders did not pay the total $160,000 in fines. As GM, he was suppose to know the rules. And his recruitment system is laughable. 25 free agent camps last winter??? How much did this cost the Riders and what was the player recruitment result. Someone should be accounting for this. As for a weak spot in the coaching staff, these guys are all best friends and we will not see weak links go.

We cant afford letting him go yet, but the franchise is in a very weak spot. I for one and not interested in buying merchandise, as it is embarrassing.

And where is the dominating defense? We dont blitz enough, and look confused out there, moving around before the snap. And a team with Zero interceptions?? How embarrassing. We only rush 3 and the other teams pick apart our secondary???

We use to stand for integrity, but appears we are lost!

Good young roster??? The QB is 38. Our "young" talent brought in by Jones includes a 33 year old CB & 30 year old HB who got caught on a crack back block by a goal post on defence. On offence, there's 33 year old Dyakowski on the OL with 30 year old LaBatte & 32 year old Coleman. Bagg is 32, Grant 30. Now that's not all bad but all of these except LaBatte & Bagg were brought in by the current regime. Where is the "young" talent the Jones?Murphy duo were so praised for being able to discover? When they gutted the team the consensus feeling was Jones would easily fill these positions. Why worry? Look at all the guys they discovered in Calgary & Edmonton. Judging by the young talent brought in by those 2 clubs since Jones & Murphy departed, my guess is Hervey & Hufnagel had a whole lot more to do with the talent discovered than Messrs Jones & Murphy.

Brad wall did not turn this province into a have province........he lucked out in getting elected just when the upturn had already been started by the NDP.......then he rode the coat tails of that upturn but still spent the money like a drunken pirate.......and NOW the province is pretty much a have not province,,,,,,get yer facts straight Rod!! No......yer welcome!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Yeah right. Just check out how well Alberta is doing with the NDP. I suppose you are looking forward to the carbon tax too because Wall is one of the few willing to fight for this province.

Anonymous said...

Same thing in Alberta.......the NDP inherited a mess from the previous Conservative government......same as happened here when Grant Devine effed up this province's finances(Grant Devine being Brad Wall's mentor).......and for your information...Brad Wall no longer wants to fight for this province......he's taking the easy way out by QUITTING after effin up this province's finances like Devine did.
