SCRUFFY'S THIS 'N THAT

Welcome to Friday! Here are the usual weekly thoughts running through my muddled mind, and as always they come in no particular order.

- "Spy Games" goes Saturday night in Calgary, and I can't wait.  The Riders don't like the Stampeders, the Stampeders don't like the Riders. A green wave will once again descend on McMahon Stadium, and both coaches are treating this Week 5 game like a playoff contest by closing practices so things don't get "leaked".  It's a little far-fetched to think fans are divulging secrets, but hey, whatever sells tickets works for me.

The Riders are better than last year, and Calgary isn't as good as last year.  While it is early, the Stamps seem to be missing something from last year when they ran roughshod over the league until the Grey Cup game.

Will this translate into a Riders win? One would have to think the Stamps will win at home, but I will say the Riders will cover the 11 and a half point spread.  Yes, Calgary could add a late TD to make it a double-digit win, but I think Bo Levi and crew are in for a tough game against an opponent that gives them nightmares no matter their record.

- Riders head coach Chris Jones has the quote of the year in the CFL so far this year for his "We had more fans in the stands today (for Tuesday's practice) than Toronto has fans. Some have said that was an unnecessary shot against the Argos and are condeming him (surprise, surprise!) while others are taking it for what it was which was humour.  It was a well-played dig, and he wasn't really wrong was he? We all know fan support in Toronto is disgraceful.

- Can someone please tell me what Dave Dickenson was trying to accomplish when he told Calgary radio station QR77 on Monday night that he thought the Riders had  a good team last year with the exception of their QB play?  Why is Dickenson taking a shot at the now-departed Darian Durant. The same Darian Durant that beat his Stampeders one week ago!  If he had said, they had bad o-line play or a bad secondary I could understand it, but taking a poke at a player who is no longer here. I don't get it!

- Another thing I don't get is fans (smokers) who are railing on the Riders for the fact they put out an edict this week reminding people Mosaic Stadium is now smoke-free. Why is that? It's a City of Regina bylaw.  A city of Regina bylaw and not a Riders one. It's also a bylaw this non-smoker wholeheartedly endorses.  If it's a city bylaw, the Riders are simply adhering to it. Do you want them to not abide by this?  The hate of the smoker is being directed at the wrong folk.

- There is also a furor over the fact once you leave,  you can't get back in. IT WASN"T LIKE THAT BEFORE!!! claim many.  Guess what? Things change, deal with it! Many other stadiums have this policy in place. Every NFL, NHL and MLB game I have seen over the last few years whether it be at Rogers Place, Bell Centre, Target Field, Wrigley Field, CenturyLink Field, the now no-more Metrodome, you are not allowed to leave once you enter. Its a safety thing!!  It's the same reason you get your bag searched, and its the same reason many venues give you souvenirs in a clear plastic bag. How easy would it be for someone to say oh, I forgot something and come back into the stadium whether it be here or anywhere with a weapon he or she has hidden hoping security will go "Oh I remember him/her. you're good and then chaos breaks out.

Yes, the chances of that ever happening in Regina are slim, but if it did, questions would be asked about why fans weren't protected. Things change! Get used to it. It could be worse. Once again, the anger for this is a little unwarranted.  Do you say the same thing when going through the airport? Yes I do, but I understand why it's being done.  Bottom line, settle down and don't let the little things consume you as they seemingly are with some.

- Through 4 1/2 weeks of the CFL season, as a fan you can't say you are not seeing good games. Wednesday's game in Ottawa went right down to the wire and so did last night's game between the Eskimos and Ti-Cats. What a letdown by the Tabbies.  Despite another night of shoddy o-line play, Hamilton had a chance to win until late in the 4th quarter when Mike Reilly said enough was enough.  A win by the Ti-Cats (or Spy-Cats as RP has joked) would have tightened things up in the East and he West.  Perhaps Derek Meyers wasn't wrong when he said the gap between top and bottom in the league has shrunk significantly in the last year.  There seemingly isn't a lot between the top team and the worst one in the CFL.

Of the 18 games in the league this year, 13 have been decided by 8 or less. You can't ask for much better than that as a fan. A majority of the games including the two this week are coming right down to the end which I think is what you want in the end.

- Football of another kind comes to Mosaic Stadium on Saturday. I'm looking forward to seeing the New York Cosmos take on Valencia CF in the first ( and what won't be the last) international friendly. Say what you will about the game, but its popularity is increasing in our country by the day with more and more kids playing.  There is talk about a new league setting up a franchise in either Regina or Saskatoon. Former Rush prez Lee Genier is one of the people trying to make it happen. That guy knows what he's doing, so don't bet against him. Lee is scheduled to join me in the Cage at 605 Friday nightt to talk about it before a meeting at O'Hanlons at 7.

- It would only be fitting if Al Cowlings picked up OJ Simpson once he is paroled and drove him home would it not?

- People are talking about the home runs being hit in baseball and whether or not the ball is "juiced". How about the fact there are many more young stars in the game than before who can make you pay for a mistake.  Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Kris Bryant, Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge, Miguel Sano and Jose Altuve are just some of the names that will carry baseball for the next many years. There is a lot of talent on the field, and that is being shown by the increased numbers and interest in the game. You won't see me complaining about it.

- That's all I got. Have a great weekend! GO RIDERS!!

Only in Saskatchewan do they like to make their own headlines in regards to the so called "spygate" when the rest of the CFL does not care about little things in life like that. But i guess to be fair i can see why some team would "spy" on a last place team just to see the secret recipe to being a successfull losing team .

I think Dickenson's comment was a jab at Chris Jones. Jones has acted as though a lot of last season was the fault of qb play.

It seems to be year to take a shot a Durant. Why not? Jones took a shot at Durant on his way out the door. That one wasn't as surprising because Jones has no class but apparently, I gave Dicky credit for more class than he has. The satisfying thing here is that Montreal, with Durant, beat both the Riders and the Stampeders. I hope that Durant can continue to play like he did in the last half of the Ottawa game and show both Jones and Dicky a thing or two.

Scruffy, the smokers are mad because they can't even leave the stadium at halftime to leave the property to have a smoke, that my friend is on the Roughriders...get your facts straight!

Encore scruffy, encore

I don't think it is the fans that they are afraid of for divulging secrets - I think it is some media and some bloggers who think it is their right to be able to report whatever they want from practices.

One thing should be clear, Durant did not win the game against Calgary. The Montreal defence did.

Dickenson's comments were made so his team doesn't overlook the Riders

Just last week my friends went through airport security ... forgot something ... came back out ... then back in through security. Why security at a gate can work my first entry and not the second is baffling. Marketing is all about serving customer needs PERIOD. Can't please all but a good marketer never lets authoritarian rule makers impose 'because big cities do it'. They need to be addressing an issue of importance and then explain to the customer the problem being solved.

Riders aren't in last place bud. Their 1-2. Hamilton is 0-4

Anonymous said...

To be clear: DD 2 - Jones / Dickenson 0.

EasternFootballisajoke said...

Well if you watch Durant at any point after2014 you realize that he simply can't win games for you. Unless given a world class defence you can't consistently put up under twenty points a night and expect to win

Durant is getting better every game, I suspect they will be fight in the mix for grey cup. The more he gets to know his players and their tendencies, they will evolve. Montreal b.c. Grey cup.

Im a former smoker and think these rules are a little over the top, but they arent secirity based so much as they are a push by lawmakers to make smoking in public more difficult in general. It maybe unfair, but its not going to change. Smokers will have to adapt or quit-thats it.

You know I have seen many times Rider fans posting that the Eskies let Reilly go for Franklin but let me make this really clear...you will never see Reilly in a Green and White jersey or any other jersey but the Green and Gold for that matter...I know you all want that and is why you all state this but give it up because he is the Eskies franchise QB and the best QB in the CFL and he is going no where...you guys can keep signing Kevin Glenn's all day long and keep your football mastermind Jones that can't figure out the difference from his own but hole to a hole in the ground...enjoy.

Ticket prices are up and the Riders want to make money from the concessions but some people can't afford the new prices for food. And so far I have not found great quality in the food being offered but it is similar to other stadiums - not great. Why not let a family bring in a sandwich or snack to the game? Riders are trying to go big time like New York or Toronto. The Riders have a lot of lunch box fans that they are turning off. No sense complaining as they really don't care.

Waaaaah!!! Can't have a smoke at half time!!!

Every non-smoker doesn't want to smell that crap, and even in a large stadium you can still smell that stench. About bloody time.

Quit already - your bithing and smoking.

Jones cutting down a cfl team lol.

Couldn't agree more on your take about the smokers Scruffdog!

I am going to let you all in on a secret. There's a big club out there and none of you are in it or ever going to be. This is also a good lesson to show the Terrorists won as none of us are free anymore. It gave corporations and governments a great excuse to mandate top-down what you will be doing.

You can bring in water, up to 1L. You can bring in individual snacks. If one takes the time to read the list and be prepared on game day, there won't be any issues. As for the in/out policy, that's been implemented across North America in most stadiums. It's a safety concern. Just because something hasn't happened here yet, doesn't mean that it can't. I'd rather be safe, wouldn't you?

Jeff said...

Drinks and bringing in your own food is still permitted. I'm positive. Check the new stadium policies.

Anonymous said...

Yes you can bring your own food to the game, just not liquids - much like the airport.

I am with the 2nd comment by Dex

I think Dickenson was being sarcastic - as it stands on Monday, the "exception" had beat both Calgary and Saskatchewan....so I think this was too rub salt in a wound to say Jones didn't know what he was doing....

My thoughts

Sure would be nice to beat the Stampeders!!!! Montreal found a way with them missing some pretty big players from last year not their this year, and they stopped Bo...

RIP--Kenny Shields......You were the ABSOLUTE best!!

Smokers. If you can't sit for a few hours without a smoke, it's a sad day.

Anonymous said...

Wow, still in the 1950s eh.

Anonymous said...

Seriously?

Joking or not, Dickenson is authorized to speak on the evaluation of QB's. Except that he works for Stampeders, he is a standup guy. Never thought much of him until he humbled Riders in Western final in 2006 with 45 yards rushing head first and only 1-month post-concussion. Even Riders' Barret had to acknowledge the performance of the so-called "pocket passer".
At least we have his brother...

I want to bring my home made beer to rider games.

Jeff said...

Water and pop up to 1L is allowed as long as it hasn't been opened. Also, can bring in your own water bottle (empty) and fill it inside.

I think the policies this year are very reasonable.

Dicky definitely making fun of Jones. Needs to learn to win with class, lol.

So the defence won the game against Calgary...how dumb are you? It took all of the TEAM of Montreal to beat Calgary...no way Durant or just a defence is going to beat Calgary let's be clear here because Calgary is way to good for that. I know you Rider fans want Durant to fail to make you all sleep good at night but he did have a good game...he isn't the only QB giving picks out and he had over 400 passing yards that game so let's be real. Keep drinking the green Kool Aid guys and girls.

Anonymous said...

The smokers think they are entitled much like the craft beer groups. Perhaps the two should go over to the old Taylor Field with a TV and they can gather round and smoke and drink to their hearts content while going back and forth.

Anonymous said...

Scruffy's Cubs are getting back into the thick of it, yet he remains quiet. Can't be that way for too much longer.

Anonymous said...

Jones talking bad about players or other CFL teams...maybe he should go look in the mirror and realize he should be talking bad about himself because he sucks.

Anonymous said...

Uhhhh...in 2015 he didnt play. Last year he did better than most would with the team Jones put together.

Anonymous said...

Would Saskatchewan really support a minor-league soccer team? I don't think so. In Regina, it's all Riders at this time of year. Just ask the Red Sox. I'd love to see it, but I don't realistically think its feasible.

Anonymous said...

rogers place has the same smoking policy. still think its just the riders enforcing that policy.if you want to kill yourself stay home and save everyone else the hassle of dealing with your desire to look cool. small minded sasky fan, still good to laugh at. then you build this brand new state of the are stadium and still want to bring your samiches and fruit roll ups. classic

Anonymous said...

Then some stinky smoker comes back an sits beside you.

Anonymous said...

Sorry scruffy, but glen hasn't played any good teams yet, we'll see tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

I love the new no smoking policies. It will be easier to fine the pot smokers next year when it's legal.

My pop in sealed bottles has been confiscated the last two games. Pissing me off.

Water fountains dont have enough preasure to fill and bottles

@mrt_man said...

Yes, despite the keyboard warrior saying pop is allowed, if you actually read the list on the riders page it is only sealed bottles of water (not pop) which are on the permitted list.

Sounds like the security guys taking your pop are following the rules.

As for the smokers, let's just open things up and sell them with 10x the current strength so that natural selection takes its course a Lil faster.
