ROUGHRIDERS 38 ARGONAUTS 27

REGINA - A record-setting performance from Ricky Ray wasn't enough for the Toronto Argonauts to overcome the hot hands of Kevin Glenn and Duron Carter.

Carter's highlight-reel touchdown grab was one of four touchdown passes Glenn threw on Saturday that pushed the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 38-27 victory over the Argos at Mosaic Stadium.

Carter enjoyed a breakout game in green and white and brought the sellout crowd to its feet with his spectacular one-handed catch in the end zone that evened the score at 17-17 going into halftime.

"I just knew I needed to make a play,'' Carter said after his nine-reception, 131-yard, two-touchdown effort. "We were down going into halftime and I was already a little bit frustrated with how the game was going and I just told Kevin to throw it up to me and I knew I needed to catch it.''

Carter's second touchdown of the contest, although not as jaw-dropping as the first, was a big play for the Riders, who improved to 2-3 in the West Division. Carter's 14-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter put the home team ahead 27-24. They wouldn't relinquish the lead.

"You can call it a breakout game,'' said Carter, who managed just two catches the previous week against Calgary. "I'm just happy we won. I've been on a few winning teams in the CFL and I know it's really hard to win a game.''

The Riders immediately added to their lead in the fourth quarter after they recovered the ensuing onside kick. A field goal from Tyler Crapigna extended the lead to 30-24 with nine minutes remaining.

Ray knew the Argos had to answer and they had at previous junctures of the game. Toronto marched 70 yards to Saskatchewan's five-yard line, but that's where the potential go-ahead scoring drive stalled. Lirim Hajrullahu kicked a 12-yard field goal and the Argos still trailed 30-27.

"We had our chance ... we just came up short on that drive to take the lead and had to settle for a field goal,'' Ray said. "It's frustrating, we're all disappointed. We all wanted the win.''

Ray became the Argos all-time leader in passing yards, eclipsing Condredge Holloway's mark (16,619 yards).

Ray, now in his sixth season with the Argos, has 16,634 yards. Also on Saturday, Ray became the Argos' all-time leader in passing attempts (1,988).

He completed 28-of-38 pass attempts for 386 yards and three touchdowns as his team slipped to 3-3. He connected with eight different receivers, his favourite being Anthony Coombs. Coombs had nine catches for 97 yards. S.J. Green caught six passes from Ray for 68 yards and an impressive touchdown between two defenders.

"Everybody knows Ricky Ray is a Hall of Famer ... and we had our hands full on defence all night,'' said Riders linebacker Henoc Muamba. "We did just enough to win the game and we stopped them just enough times, especially with that drive in the fourth.''

Saskatchewan responded to the field goal with an insurance score - a seven-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Glenn to Caleb Holley.

Glenn has been the most consistent player for the Riders this season. He maintained his hot hand as he completed 24-of-37 pass attempts for 340 yards.

Bakari Grant was the second Riders receiver to eclipse the 100-yard mark on Saturday - five catches for 115 yards. Naaman Roosevelt also secured a touchdown catch.

Cameron Marshall became the first Riders running back to rush for more than 100 yards this season. He had 18 carries for 110 yards.

Must-win games are rare at this point in the season, though the Riders needed a win given their daunting schedule in August.

They'll travel in Vancouver next weekend for the first of a home-and-home set with the B.C. Lions. Following that, they'll head to Edmonton to take on the undefeated Eskimos.

The Argos return home on Thursday to host the Calgary Stampeders.

Pretty SICK anon #1.. Using your deceased Grandmother as a so called joke that you think you just made. Get a life and stay off of here .

A phenomenal performance by Duron Carter! So glad I was at the game today to witness him play.

Pretty sure I'm not the only one that notices how many posts occur after a win compared to after a loss

Guess some people are more passionate about losing than winning

So...........how many of you blowhards out there STILL think that Kevin Glenn does not belong in the Hall of Fame??????

Of course Carter still hasn't met a camera he didn't like

It's finally raining in Regina Saturday night!!! Amazing what a Rider win will do

I enjoyed the Victory as much as anyone. Here's hoping this will instil some confidence in the team. They are going to need it playing the next several games against Western opponents. Take 2 points and your Western opponent gets zero. Each game really is a 4 point game.
I enjoy Duron Carters play. I just wish the guy would take some P.R. classes. The things he says on Camera are just weird. Even commenting he's not his Dad when no one even mentioned his Dad or his Dads NFL Career.

Simply amazing this is the best riders team ever im in such awe ,better start planning the parade route monday morning lol

Anonymous said...

You guys will lose every game to the west teams playing like that...you get way to excited beating an east team. No wonder there are people on the sidelines...seeing Carter and a few others acting like kids on the sidelines...no professionalism there.

Anonymous said...

The Riders did just enough to win. The O-line is just barely adequate and Glenn's passes to Carter and a few others were not great passes just great receptions.

Once again the defence had some big trouble stopping anyone. A couple guys in our backfield were not good at all. Kacy Rogers proved he doesn't belong in pro football.

A win is a win, but it wasn't without a lot of flaws.

Mr simply amazing; best rider team ever comment shows just how dumb and ridiculous idiots can be. The Riders won their game. Why shouldn't Rider fans be happy. No one is saying anything except they are happy and that Carter had an awesome game. Why are you so petty and juvenile. Is your life that sad that you have to try and make yourself feel better by targeting fans for having simple celebratory comments on their teams victory. Has your Cojones not dropped down from your abdomenyet? Time to man up and grow a pair dude!

Stop with the flaws. The CFL is ultra competitive this year. Every QB is consistently throwing for 300 yards, even 350-400 on a game by game basis. Every team with the exception of Hamilton is competitive. Great for the league. I wouldn't want to be a DB in the CFL right now with the outstanding receivers and the rules the way they are. As bad as some of our DB's looked tonight, what about Toronto?!! They had blown coverages and several missed tackles, just like we have had that cost us in the Winnipeg loss. It happens. Enjoy the win Rider Nation. Great team effort. Sooner or later we need to beat an elite team and the Riders will have a chance in BC. The Lions are giving up a ton of points right now as well.

Now if the Riders could only play like that on the road. This team is so much better at home especially offensively with all three games scoring over 30 points.

Unreal. Riders win a big game over a good Argos team and yet some still whine and complain. It's almost like they want the Riders to lose because complaining gives them a sense of fulfilment. Must suck being unhappy people.

Also the Carter haters can go shove it too. He talks trash but so what. Narco was an expert at it and he never got the rap Duron does.

Once again this is the reason why riders fans lead the league in emergency room visits every year they play the east teams get a win and are on the wagon, than they play the west teams get a dose of reality get crushed and jump off the wagon breaking or spraining their ankles only in saskatchewan you will find this kind of thing.

and the New England Patriots are one of this decades bets teams in the world and they win every game 60-0! Or they don't because obviously every team has flaws.

'Twas an exciting game!

I'm not a jones fan or hater but I'm hoping we're not dumb enough to dump him yet. We can't afford to keep paying coaches and gms to sit at home and if we can afford it, I still don't want to waste more money.. The stadium (saskatchean never needed) is sold out. Why incur more expenses? Look at the leafs and ny Rangers. Terrible teams but great revenues!

I'm content to watch the year play out. I don't know enough about the future or I'd be a really rich man!

The same fans who are glowing over a win they should accomplish, will berate them when they lose. They will try to ride Jones out on a rail. Toronto was on a very short week and they still rolled up over 400 yds of offence. Good receivers can make a QB look good.

HOF or no HOF! It doesn't matter. One win against a tired team mainly because of an on-side kick and we have some idiot calling for Glenn in to the HOF?….right!

A win over Hamilton and the Bye was supposed to take us into Calgary where we would show our true metal. We sure showed a good club didn't we. No we can wait to see what happens to us when Wally and a ticked off bunch of Lions come in here next week.

Enjoy a win but don't start planning the parade over a game we were supposed to win. Most of our wins like always will be against Eastern teams. Even do that in our supposed good years.

Your wrong in so many ways, ankle band wagon jumper. I lived in Vancouver for 12 years and I have seen fans for the Cannucks react far worse than here in SK. Don't forget they trashed their City. Just because a team has fans saying good things after a Victory and bad things after loses or embarrassing loses. Dosent mean they are band wagon jumpers.
I have a North American Region Manager I have to deal with. When I do well I get positive feedback. When I don't do well, I either get constructive criticism or I get my ass chewed out. No different than what the fans do for their favourite team.
I havent read too many Rider fans saying after a loss. "Ok that's it. I quit being a Rider fan" Then upon the next Victory they say "Ok I'm going to cheer for my team again" That is a band wagon jumper. Giving "Criticism" after a game where your team was beat up in different areas is not a bad fan. It's a fan that cares and wants to voice their opinion hoping for better play next game.
Gunderson Narco never did stupid things that Duron has done. Like run over a competitors head coach Therefore people watch Duron much closer. Cool your jets man. There is nothing wrong suggesting Duron get himself a Public Relations Coach. That is both a pro active and professional comment. Some of the best players in the world as well as high ranking Statesmen have done exactly that.
I can't get over how some fans lash out when they feel hurt that their best sports buddy may have been disrespected. When in fact there was nothing disrespectful what so ever. Too many over reactions.

Hey Anon 1. The Riders had 5 sacks. Stuff it up your hole.

Speaking of stuffing it up your hole, there are some gutless trolls on here who just type up a negative because its social media and they can do so without having to identify.

Rod, I love the fact you put up your 10 things I think I think on Facebook. Those commenting can't hide and the conversation is much more civil.

There are a lot of people who are higher than they are on the food chain and it shows win or lose.

As for the game, it was outstanding. A great atmosphere, a great night and a great win.

Some are complaining about a lack of fillup stations for water. This just in, you knew it was hot and you didn't come prepared? My wife and I each bought a 1L bottle of water Friday night and put it in the freezer. Just before halftime, I bought two bottles of water and filled what I had. Problem solved. I don't expect to be catered to at the game. What's next, you will be calling for spritzers to be installed at the place.

Enjoy what you have folks and stop bitching about it. You really are somewhat amazing with your negativity.

The facts are Duron could be a superstar in this league. The fact is Carter has trouble containing his emotions at times at times and says very strange or weird things. If he truly learned from a Public Relations Coach. No different than a positional coach. Duron could become very likeable to everyone. NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB Players have often hired outside help when it comes to reacting to the cameras or giving an interview. Suggesting a professional fix to players inability or awkward situations is nothing but respectful. Some of us need to think before we comment.

Okay you call us haters and lead unhappy lives...nope you are incorrect due to the fact I am not a Rider fan and due to the facts that are being spoken of by us so called haters. The thing about this is are true facts that you rider fans can't understand or clearly don't want to but here is the reality check...the Riders are 7 and 16 in there last 23 games played, pretty horrible honestly, here is the funny little fact that stands behind the comments of the Riders having to prove they can beat the west which is proven right now they can't and won't, in the 7 wins of the last 23 games only one time they have beat a west team...yes one time so seeing pretty much the only way you win is against the east that won't let you bums even come close to play-offs...but keep drinking the kool-aide. Also by the way Carter has talent but his ego and attitude do stink and until he changes that it won't help him as a professional.

I still think kevin glenn does not belong in the HOF. If u think ONE game changes that, you dont understand what an HOF'er is.

Riders looked good. The onside kick was a smart call. They got help from a couple of bonehead plays by Sears - the roughing the passer to aid in the TD late in the first half, and the RIDICILOUS decision to let Grant get up off tge turf and run for an extra 30 yards and eventually the game clinching TD.

Now we'll see if they can hang with their western rivals over the next three games. Gonna be a tall order.

Most of the negative comments here are coming from non Rider fans and they are partially correct but Jones is still tinkering with the team and it is coming together. When will people realize Rome was not built in a day. Give Jones & company another year & then analyze the guy!!!!
I have 2 comments about last nights game, other than the fact it seems they knew how to win when behind at the start.
1. In my view, extreme ignorance when the Argo's were introduced & 1 only 1, player came out of the tunnel.Everyone waited & waited still no Argo's so rightfully , the Riders were introduced & came out. Then Argo's come out last. That was NOT A TRESMAN DECISION. GUESS WHO THEIR DEFENSIVE COACH IS & assistant head coach. Just showed Chamblin's irrogance , in my opinion. If Jones did that he would likely get fined!!!!!!
2. WHY WERE THE ELEVATORS NOT WORKING AFTER THE GAME?????????? Rediculous.
Oh, &
3. The gate on Westside at centre walkway to stadium, from Handicapped parking is to be OPEN, according to the Rider ticket office. Time to tune up the Security supervisor in that area.
Go Riders

I agree with the anon who said the short kick was a good call. I admit if it didnt work i wouldn not be happy BUT it worked and the timing of it was excellent. Did you see jones give that "stare" to the guys in the box after thay coaxed him into throwing the challenge on that non interference call? Loved it. And finally jones got the call overturned on another challenge for once. Riders made faster adjustments to limit rickys succeess imo. Gotta give credit to riders coaching staff this time around. Great to see the riders step on the gas and win ar the end. To the poor little boy anon who says the riders will lose to all the western teams, try to wait for the games and if the green and white lose, then you can say na na na na na.

Scott is 100 percent correct. There seem to be many "privileged" people going to games.

Clay, here's an idea. In fact, here is one for a lot of you. Stay at home or move to Winnipeg. Then your perfect little life will be better and there will be no distractions.

RP, I had breakfast at Smittys in Normanview this morning with the fam and there were a pair of couples around 65-70 having breakfast. Don't know if they were local or not, but I overheard their conversation about the new stadium. It was their first time in and they loved it!

There was no talk about water, no talk about elevators not working, no talk about buses. They loved it! Actually, there was talk about buses because they went to and from Normanview and had NO problems.

As for me, I came to the game with one bottle of ice water. I bought two bottles of water when I came in and I was fine. I walked after the game into Cathedral and was home 35 minutes after the final gun. Perhaps you idiots need to do some better game-planning. You bitch at Jones for not game-planning right so look in the mirror and be better.

Troll away suckas!!

Good you're not Administrator. Without the "knitters" this blog would be boring. I suppose your idea of having a blog would be only publishing comments agreeing with whomever thinks like you. You would soon be down to a diary of your own thoughts. Thank goodness this is a forum for independent views. Negativity about a team which has won 8 games the past 2 seasons - what's wrong with people? How dare they - haters one & all.

Anonymous said...

To those non-rider fans including last years games in their assessment of the riders give it up. It's a new season. For example EE's are hammering the league this year but not so much last. Stamps were really hot last year but have not played EE's yet and got beat by a lowly Eastern team. Last year is history, teams have changed, players have changed and been exchanged. Riders are not the cream of the crop but let's see where we are in a few more games and never mind last year.

First time at the new stadium last night. I was extremely disappointed. The beer selection was terrible and the stadium felt cheap. Pretty disappointing overall. I thought we would have the best stadium in the CFL. Honestly this ranks behind Winnipeg, edmonton and BC.

Dear Mosaic personal [via this blog] site in charge of songs/music during Roughriders home games,

Play some "Greta Van Fleet" music_ get the joint rockin. Some home side rockin touchdown music. New stadium, new music! "Highway Tune" a very good song to start off with from their play list. "Green is the color" played out, oId outdated, time for the trash can.

The Riders played a pretty good game but started off slow and still took some unnecessary penalties, both things that can be looked at and fixed. Still a ways to go to compete in the west but that game can be the starting point.

Absolutely fabulous new stadium. My first time there. And what a great and loud atmosphere. The game was close until the Riders pulled away in the fourth, and it was very entertaining with Glenn matching Ray, and some super grabs by Carter and Green. The referees were actually OK and there were so few challenge flags thrown which kept up the tempo of the game. What an absolute game breaker and brain cramp by the Toronto DB, by not tackling Grant and instead trying to strip the ball loose. We may not have won otherwise. Generally speaking, most of the games in the CFL this year have been close and exciting (if the referees had been more with it or consistent game in game out as well as the video reply personnel, and there were far less challenges, as well as a move to get rid of the ridiculous pass interference rule, where a DB basically gets a penalty for breathing on a receiver), one would have little to complain about with the state of the game. What a shame the TV audience is down as is attendance in some of the centres, because the product overall has been good. But here I go again, as I sat through half time on Saturday, looking around this beautiful new stadium;I put my business hat on, and wondered about the prudence of building a new facility at such expense, when it may get used for 10 or 11 Rider games a year. The same could be said with the other new or renewed stadiums across the CFL. Why not have multi use facilities, which can be used for so much more, and all of the year? Rider games plus practices and a few other events here and there, with the building sitting more or less idle and quiet for all out 5 or 6 months each year once football is over, raises concern. If one is in for a penny, maybe one should be in for a pound, meaning perhaps it would have been best to add to the budget, and out a roof on the facility, so it became a year round complex. In that manner, use of some public money towards the costs of construction could very well have been justified or been less controversial. All I know is that it is like buying a new convertible. Amazing to drive in the summer but worth the dough if you only drive the car 10 times a year? If you have deep pockets, why not?. And yet that is the problem these days, and that is government and the average Joe do not have bags of cash at their disposal. If you do not have the cash, do with out or scale back. As a business owner, if I did not adopt this approach, I would be out of business. What do so many folks associated with government or other special interests groups not fathom or understand that it will catch up to us all if we keep throwing around money which we did not have, when we should be putting the funds we do have available towards primary needs such as health care or education. I guess I made my point, yet I am curious as to the take of others here.

Anonymous said...

it's not a matter of whether building a roof on the joint is affordable... Heating the stadium would break the bank in the winter! As for the various comments, we are getting the "sky is blue" people this week. Next loss, the teeter totter (as usual) will go the other way on these comments. ..."fire Jones...cut Glenn..." It's a 3 year plan and we're not yet in the middle of year two, so be patient. As one person said...Rome wasn't built in a day. Carter is fine. Receivers are all kind of flaky (like defensive ends) so don't sweat the small stuff. I hate McAdoo's offense, but it fits KG's arm strength, so wide-outs might not get the ball much on deep routes. I expect that the Riders might win one out of the next three and that's OK. The main thing is showing some jam in the games. After that I expect the Riders to pick p steam til season's end. Was very happy to see the pushback at the end of the first half and also the 5-yard line stand in the 4th. We're not near there yet, but progress is being made. To the ones who are sticking forks in Durant...notice that a healthy O-line does wonders...and that is also why Marshall gets his 100 yards.

Are you freakin kidding me? The stadium seems cheap?? Its a complete gem. Stay away then loser.
