JONES ON CUTTING NEWSOME, STICKING WITH CRAPIGNA

Newsome
Sophomore defensive end Jonathon Newsome wasn't at practice with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Tuesday and midway through the workout, the team announced the Ball State product has been released.

"Sometimes in pro football things are viewed differently," explained Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones after the workout. "Unfortunately we had a few views that we viewed differently so it was in the best interest of both parties that we part ways."

Newsome was responsible for the Riders' lone defensive takeaway in Saturday's 43-40 loss to Winnipeg, an interception in the first half. Jones declined to go into the specifics of the disagreement with Newsome.

"That's between me and Jonathon," Jones offered. "We appreciate his contributions while he was here but we decided to go in a different direction."

Meanwhile the team looked to be having a field goal competition between kickers Tyler Crapigna and Quinn Van Gylswyk prior to Tuesday's workout however Jones said that's nothing new. They held similar auditions last week.

Crapigna has only missed two kicks through the Riders' first two games but one was for a game-winner in Montreal in Week 1 and the other was in overtime of Week 2 against Winnipeg. Van Gylswyk has been sitting on the Injured List waiting for his opportunity.

"Tyler's going to be our kicker, unless something happens to him," Jones explained. "Tyler's going to be our kicker. He just needs to get back on track. He's been an 86%-87% kicker during his career so he just has to get back on track."

NOTES: WR Caleb Holley didn't practice on Tuesday and Jones said he's not certain of the severity of his shoulder injury, which was re-injured Saturday night ... Middle Linebacker Henoc Muamba was back with the starting defense, just days after being placed on the 6-game Injured List. Muamba said the injury wasn't as serious as feared ... Lineman Jeremy Zver practiced with the team after being signed Tuesday morning. The Regina Rams grad was drafted by BC this spring.

The Riders host Hamilton Saturday at 8:00 pm on 620 CKRM and TSN.

Lets all hope that 'different direction' involves winning a game, it would be a nice thing to experience.

If I'm van gylswyk I ask for a trade.

So what's new.? Jones didn't like Durant . Where is he ? Joes didn't like Dressler. Where's he? Jones didn't like Chick. Where's he? It just goes on and on . So we are all getting to not like Jones. Why is he still here ?

Wasn't Newsome a "project" of Jones, a converted tight end.......duh......see how that worked out ☹️

Why wouldn't Jones give Tyler Crapigna another chance. He only missed 2 crucial field goals this year and 3 last year. A total of 5 misses in 20 regular season games. Where as Jones is at the opposite end of the scale with 5 Victories in 20 regular season tries. If Jones sits Tyler than he better sit down himself with his own sorry record.

Differing views lead Roughriders to release --- who ??? that would be all of the riders best players

Jones is 5-20 why does he keep getting a pass especially from this pathetic media who are afraid to hold him accountable for anything!! When is the last time Calgary was 5-20?

The only guy with a takeaway last weekend but he's gone because he liked that hilarious tweet by a Jones impersonator.

It's time we sent Jones in a different direction. I guess he wants everyone to know who is the boss. I wonder who is going to pick him up so that he can be a sack leader and give Saskatchewan another loss. I cannot help but think he and the Trumpster are two peas in a pod.

No that's Ac Leonard that was a converted tight end duh

If Jones does not like what you say to him or disagree you are released that is complete Bullshit. Sorry Rod but the frustration is building and it should not be sugarcoated.

Jones said he is bringing another kicker, all I read into that is pressure on Tyler and miss another field goal and baby you are gone,Jones freaking style.
How and the hell do you refocus when their is a possible threat waiting to take your place.

As far as I am concerned the biggest problem for the Riders is Jones. The man thinks he is God and the unemployment line looks closer.

Does the Rider front office have enough courage to challenge Jones on some of his decisions or are they afraid of what he will do.Resign, not much of a loss now is there.

my guess is Newsome got into an argument with Jones on what schemes should be used on various plays.....for example blitz more, or rush 4 lineman more.. Jones tends to drop def ends on some plays into short pass coverage and I am thinking Newsome disagrees with that like Shawn Lemon did and he wants to pin his ears back and rush more. Unfortunately, the coaches coach and the players follow direction and is no different than an employee listening to their manager and doing what is told of them to do. When these disagreements happen it is not likely that the "boss" loses out, its always the employee, and in this case, see ya Newsome. Just my speculation.

Hey Rod, you are tight with Jones...ha ha ......what happened with the Jones/Newsome disagreement?? Enlighten us or give us your opinion.

Anonymous said...

Hey Rod, with Holley not practising and hurt, who took his place with the first teamers? With the depth of our receivers, hopefully we don't miss a beat with whoever takes his place....comments please?

I don't think Jones dislike Chick, Dressler, et al. Rather he, Murphy, O'Day and presumably Reynolds didn't like those individuals contracts. I would think some, if not all of those players might still be wearing green at the right price.
1 year and 2 games into a rebuild and people are calling for heads to roll. Most rebuilds take 3-4 years, at least in most other pro leagues.

Does no one realize that Winnipeg game was on track for a major blowout in the 50 to 6 range without the last 2 minutes of the first half and next 7 minutes of the 3rd Quarter. Something happened in that 9 minute gap to the Defense. We are OH so close to being a power.

I think it's getting harder to bring players in, after they see what's going on here

Anonymous said...

After all the players and and camps he's held and the high rating he has for football, he should have 2 teams ready to go by now, and he's still picking up other teams cast offs ?

What happened in those nine minutes and the rest of the game was Winnipeg adjusted to jones defense and jones couldn't figure out how to stop it. Pretty simple for Winnipeg the riders have horrible secondary and are only rushing three all they had to do was stretch the field our secondary couldn't keep up to their receivers. Bring te pressure and make them work for those downfield throws. Don't tell a young secondary ok we are going to rush three which means the qb will have all day to throw so you young guys have to keep your guy covered for 10 to 15 seconds without touching them. Like come on its simple pressure on the quarterback makes it easier on the secondary. You just can't cover guys long in the new CFL.

Hamilton will pick up Newsome before the game on Saturday night!
Jones is destroying the Rider Brand one player at a time!!

Anonymous said...

The thing with Rider fans is that they love to complain but are seldom correct.

Newsome was a defensive lineman from the NFL, not a tight end. duh!

Jones never said he disliked Dressler or Chick. He disliked the fact they both made over $250,000. If Hamilton loves Chick so much why did they just resign him for under 200? Dressler is a free agent after this year, will anyone offer him 250? How come?

Darian Durant is a career five-hundred quarterback. Bottom three starter in league right now and his first two games have proved. Not sure KG is any better but he is a lot cheaper which means in theory you should be able to sign more quality players elsewhere.

The Riders are junk right now. They've improved but still junk. I just prefer to deal with facts and realities.

Funny how entering the season the Riders def line was a weak spot because newsome was penciled a starter. Now he gets cut and hes a fans hero. hmmmm.

Anonymous said...

Very astute observation. I saw the same thing and of course all tje other teams do. 3 man rush will simply keep piling on losses. Simple fact.

Dictatorship! You can act like Belichek but you need to win first. Keep your better players!

I hate being a fan of this team. I like to read updates and follow the team I have had season tickets for 18 years for but I detest the people who can't keep their ridiculous thoughts to themselves. I feel embarrassed when I read what you say or hear what you speak. Narcissism at its finest.

Anonymous said...

Lol. Exactly!

Anonymous said...

Reading these comments just proves again that Rider fans are the best and the worst. Loyal to a fault, but want the moon too. What Buono and Huff do is pay less for good developing players, but realize it's a team game and you need quality at all positions and not just one. No coach is popular around here when the Riders don't win. All the Jones neh sayers will shut it up when these team begins to reach it's potential and it's not far off. Go Riders. See you Saturday night.

Anonymous said...

Cheap cheap cheap, you get what you pay for, the basement.

Anonymous said...

Different directions, fine, but maybe the wrong guy left and wrong guy stayed

Anonymous said...

Or the coach who can't seem to get players to see it his way (or the fans either) for that matter

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah. His ego is big, but fragile. Expect him to start weeping if anybody (say our soft media) were to point out his massive flaws once in awhile

Anonymous said...

"Rebuild" is still in demolition phase in year 2.

Anonymous said...

It appears the player talent is there. Coaching, not so much.

Anonymous said...

How is it then, that other teams, with as much, or more talent than the Riders are able to come to terms with Dressler, Chick and Durant? You said it yourself the Riders are still junk. So where are the benfits of all this money thay is being saved?

It's because Jones low balled them without the intention of keeping them, which is disrespectful to those Rider greats and has soured alot of fans on Jones and how he does things. Treat people with some respect.

When it comes to Durant, you said it yourself again "not sure KG is any better, but he's cheaper". If we had the "next one" lined up and ready, a la BLM or Jennings, people would be okay with moving on. But Jones let him go with basically no plan going forward. Watching KG as the starter sucks - it always has. Respect his utility, but hes just boring.
