FRIENDS OF THE RIDERS RECAP: WINNIPEG 43 SASKATCHEWAN 40 (2OT)

REGINA - Saskatchewan Roughriders kicker Tyler Crapigna summed up his team's 43-40 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday with two words.

"It's football.''

The game has been especially cruel to the Riders kicker the first two games of the 2017 regular season.

For the second consecutive week, Crapigna had an opportunity to put his team in the lead late in the game. A week ago in Montreal, he saw his potential game-winning field goal sail wide as time expired. The Alouettes prevailed 17-16.

On Saturday on his home turf, Crapigna heard his 33-yard field-goal attempt slam into the upright and drop short. It was the clank heard around the province and one that deflated the sellout crowd of 33,350 at Mosaic Stadium.

"Just unlucky,'' said a frustrated Crapigna, his team falling to 0-2.

"I'm pretty sure you saw (the ball) hit the post. That's what happened. It felt good ... it hit the top of the post, so obviously it wasn't a (bad) kick. It hit the post.''

The miss set the stage for Winnipeg's Justin Medlock. His 29-yard field goal just minutes later proved to be the winning points for the Blue Bombers (1-0). Medlock was 5-for-5 in field goal attempts.

"They were up early, we were up later. Both teams made good comebacks to get back into the game. Luckily, we made one more play at the end than they did,'' said Blue Bombers slotback Weston Dressler.

Prior to that miss, Crapigna was 4-for-4 in field goal attempts in the game.

"(Crapigna) missing that kick doesn't mean we hang this loss on him,'' said the Riders' Caleb Holley. "We had things that we could have done better so he wouldn't have to be in that position to make that kick.

"We're still with him. I'll stand behind him to make that kick every time. But that (miss) is what happens sometimes. It's football.''

Quarterback Kevin Glenn rallied the Roughriders from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to set the stage for overtime.

The teams were tied 37-37 at the end of regulation.

Matt Smith/CFL.ca
Trailing 37-23 early in the fourth quarter, Glenn hooked up with Nic Demski (27 yards) and Naaman Roosevelt (15 yards). The second touchdown evened the score at 37-37 with less than two minutes remaining.

Glenn finished the night with 377 yards passing and four touchdowns. His counterpart, Matt Nichols, was equally impressive with 331 passing yards and four touchdowns.

Nichols, however, felt his offence lacked a killer instinct that could have ruined hopes of a Roughriders rally.

"It's a roller-coaster ride, but at the same time I don't feel like we did our job as an offence,'' Nichols said. "We're up 14 and we need to go down the field and at least kick another field goal and go up 17. We didn't get that job done.''

Winnipeg trailed 17-13 at the half, but erupted for 21 points in the third quarter to take a 34-23 lead.

Dressler's two touchdowns - one for 87 yards and the other for nine yards - came 35 seconds apart in the opening minutes after halftime. The former Riders star receiver racked up 124 receiving yards. Dressler's second touchdown put the visitors ahead 27-17.

After a field goal from Crapigna, the Blue Bombers responded with their third touchdown of the quarter, a 35-yard strike from Nichols to L'Damien Washington, to restore a two-touchdown lead at 34-20.

"We could have come into halftime feeling sorry for ourselves and not responded,'' Nichols said. "We did come out and we did respond and put up points and it seemed like they were coming in bunches. I think that just speaks to the kind of team that we have.''

Roughriders head coach Chris Jones wasn't impressed with his team's defensive effort, especially in the third quarter.

"We can play good defence some of the time, but we need to learn how to play good defence all the time,'' Jones said.

Saskatchewan built a 17-3 lead in the first half thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Glenn to Holley (18 yards) and Bakari Grant (10 yards). Demski led all Roughriders with seven receptions for 82 yards. Holley caught five passes for 74 yards.

A 31-yard touchdown strike to Darvin Adams, followed by a Sam Hurl interception seemed to spark the Blue Bombers late in the half.

Medlock kicked a 17-yard field goal to close out the first half, with Winnipeg trailing 17-13.

In Week 3, Winnipeg will host the Calgary Stampeders, while the Riders will welcome the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to Regina.

CHRIS JONES POSTGAME COMMENTS

- I told them it's not necessarily the teams we're playing that are making plays, but we're allowing them to make plays. Montreal last week hit us on a 65-yard play because we didn't cover the guy. Same thing tonight. We have to do the right things 100% of the time, not just some of the time

- I'm not gonna throw guys under the bus. We have to play better defense consistently.

- It's unfortunate for the kicker. He's always magnified. I feel bad for the young guy but no one feels worse than him.

- It's very frustrating. For us to only play six coverages, and blow them, we have to coach it better and play it better.

- We can't say we should be 2-0. We played two good teams who deserved to beat us and we let them make enough plays to beat us.

- We gave ourselves a chance and that's the one positive I can see in all this. A lot of teams, when they give up a third quarter like we did, they'd be beat by 14 or 21 points but we didn't. We fought hard and came back.

- The kids fed off the crowd. But the guys just have to be consistent in making plays. It's not real rocket science what we do. We just can't let guys behind us.

- Kevin Glenn made mistakes like everybody else did. We've gotta block better, we couldn't run tonight against a team we should be able to run on. There's a lotta things that went wrong across the board.

- Anytime you let somebody run by and you let them throw in the endzone after a turnover, that's a little concerning to me.

- I think we've got the right people. I told them that. They're high character and athletic enough. You look at the teams who've won the past few years, we weren't earth-shattering schematically in Edmonton, but we lined up and made them beat us. You look at Ottawa, we beat them twice last year. Our personnel matches up with them great, but they don't bust as much as what we bust.  We just gotta be consistent defensively. If we play good defense, we win that game.

- We have to coach them better and make them understand the importance of everything we do and take it to the field. I'm gonna put it on me, and I gotta coach better.

Crapigna lost us the MTl game but tonights missed FG is irrelevant as the Bombers for sure would have tied it or maybe won it with their second possession of OT.. But turnovers, serious breakdowns in the secondary against a decent Wpg team done us in. I am not sure but It may be hard to equal last years ineptitude of 5-13.Glenn again had more passing yards than the winning QB but crucial interceptions at critical times is not acceptable. Lose a few more and put the young guys in to see if they can be the answer at the QG position. Sad to see. Polkabill from the Peg.

The Riders' BOD must show the fans that this level of incompetence will not be tolerated.

Reynolds, Jones, Murphy and O'Day have failed and are only regressing with each passing day.

Forget the fines. Forget the controversy over the treatment of veteran players. Forget the recruitment of known violent criminals and anti-Semitic lunatics. I have supported this regime from day one, through all of the embarrassment these individuals have brought upon the organization. But this is a results based business, and 5 -15 is the straw that broke the camel's back. Enough is enough.

The only reasonable arguement that could be made before yesterday to continue this farce was that continuity was needed to keep the Riders from becoming the Cleveland Browns of the CFL. Now you can argue if this continues, we will be there by Labour Day. There is no process to trust. This organization is a dumpster fire inside Chernobyl. Please end the humiliation of Rider Nation.

This team doesn't have a bloody clue how to play defence. It's high time the BOD step in a hire a defensive Coordinator. Brutal defence and enough already about how sorry the kicker is. With any kind of kicking game we wouldn't have a loss yet. Something has got to be done because what is going on out there is terrible. Brutal defence, just B R U T A L !!!! This game appears too cerebral for a lot of our players and the talent isn't near good enough…terrible.

Giving up 43 points against in your home opener??? This is a consistent theme of the Jones defences this year and last. No pass rush worth anything and DB's who simply can't cover. QB's can't function if they are under pressure and duress. We are not able to apply pressure and a three man rush does not and usually will not work with any regularity. Sorry but I think the time has come for heads to roll. Do it now or wait until your 0-5 or 0-6 ?? Not good enough by a long ways..

Holley over Dressler? really? Wow!!!

Glenn once again shows he is a backup QB and in fact always will be just that. They need some better personnel and a DC very badly. Need to find a QB soon, release Crapigna, attempt to locate some pass rushers and cover men. We're not even a very good flag football team...

Time for jones to go - like in fired and if reynolds does not fire jones than reynolds obviously is not the leader the riders need and he too must be fired.

My observations, which are no less but no more important than the opinions of others would be (1) The Riders once again teased their fans, playing very well in certain portions of the game but then making critical errors at the worst time or taking their foot off the gas pedal when they had momentum and a chance to pull away from Winnipeg.(2) Kevin Glenn is a journeyman who you put in the game off of the bench or when your starter goes down; he is not and has never been good enough to carry a team as a starter all season. (3) Going into the season with Kevin Glenn not being #2, but being #1 on the QB depth chart is inexcusable in a league where teams with a decent quarterback have an equally decent shot at winning the Grey Cup each year (4). Do not push the panic button just yet as it is early into this season and an overhaul of a team as Jones has embarked upon can take 2 or 3 years and be a process of ups and downs. However, if after next year this team misses the playoffs three years in a row, I would say the experiment with Jones should end at that time (5) There is so much player change over on the Riders but even with other CFL teams such that it is difficult to build loyalty to certain players when the roster is like a turnstile from week to week and year to year. And yet, there was Dressler tonight, with two TD's and someone we did previously identify with, season in and season out, but that was not good enough for the Riders anymore as they had to ship him out. (6) The game appeared to be slow tonight in spots with too many penalties and all of these challenges or reviews initiated by the command centre. (7) The CFL needs to market and brand better to bring back younger fans or attract fans of the younger generation to help avoid the concerns over dwindling attendance in a number of CFL cities, although an inept team will sure drive the fans away even if there is a new stadium (8) What is with the jerseys that with most of the players seem to be too tight, as some of the players look like they are wearing a hand me down? (9) When will the streak of losses end? Next week at home against Hamilton? (10) Hope everyone enjoyed Canada Day and the new stadium!

Good morning Rod

Defense:The 3 man rush with only 6 different coverage in the game plan scheme isn't working
total confusion in the D back field.

The Bombers had a better grasp on our D then we had.If the Bombers QB would of connected on just a couple of the other break downs in the backfield we would have been blown out.

3 receivers left side and we have 2 in coverage,no timeout called from the sidelines.that is on coaching.

Our lack of pressure makes for a great day of pitch and catch for the visitors.
Coaching needs to be questioned, running this D so the DBs get comfortable in coverage and still getting constantly beaten says it all.

Still can't believe we blew two games like we did. The fans did their job, the BOD did their job, the city of Regina did their job, and the province did its job. All we need is for the players to do theirs.

The blown coverages were obviously the biggest problem last night and the missed field goal was heartbreaking but this game was fun and entertaining and the atmosphere in the new stadium was as good as it gets. It's hard to get mad at Weston Dressler for having a good game and quite honestly he very well could have scored a couple more on us.I prefer to look at the progress this team is making even though it seems to be painstakingly slow. The offense scored 40 points, they are going to be fine. The defense looked unsure of their assignments at times, that is a worry. Hopefully that is corrected soon.

Was at the game, stadium is outstanding! Team was competitive. The difference came down to 4 plays. 2 looses by a total of 4 points. Have not been a big Jones and crew fan however overall this team looks better than last year's edition. Less penalties this week. Good aerial component. Run game seemed to flounder a bit except when Marshal receiving. Demskii had a good game. Consistent lane gap in the punt coverage team. Don't think we have time or need to go 'back to the drawing board', felt Glen had us in a position to at least tie. Other than the loss the biggest disappointment was the lame half time show,

Yes, dressler was way over paid.

Anonymous said...

The turning point in my view was the stupid penalty by #45 when he pulled Dressler down with a horse collar in the end zone after he already scored. The end result of this bone-head decision was to give the Bombers 15 yards on the kick-off which then saw the fumble near the goal line by Morris (who was fabulous all night otherwise) and another Bomber TD and more momentum. This was the killer, not a missed kick. It should have never got to OT. The Riders should be 2-0.

I thought the Riders looked pretty good especially when they had the ball. Defense was just not there when it had to be. Stayed close and again we could have won but Lady Luck as of yet just is not on our side. Can't just blame the kicker because to many mistakes by plenty of other players on this Roster. You just had to know that Dressler was going to break loose in the 2nd half and he should have been covered like a blanket and not left open like he was. Those 2 quick touchdowns and 2 interceptions really hurt and made me believe those were the turning points in the game. Not just the Kicker .Riders will get better.

GWil26 said...

I only question Jones' ability to be a GM... I watch this team and see a lot of talented INDIVIDUALS. However, we just don't gel. There is no cohesiveness.

@mrt_man said...

It had to be Dressler... Dangit!

The d in q 3 was not impressive. When their recrivers don't even have to attempt to make a move to be completely open it isn't a good sign.

Got decently loud from where we were sitting.

Tough that Tyler missed another one. He has been money, so I hope they don't knee jerk him outta there. Watching our old kickers outkick us is kinda frustrating.

The boys aren't getting curb stomped. Glenn put together the drives we needed... just shouldn't have needed so many. Did someone miss a route on those picks? Didn't look like much green around for the shorter one.

Fumble puts wpg in the red zone for free :(

Let's learn from this one and hope that inexperience in the backfield doesn't burn us as bad next time.

Anonymous said...

The defense probably hated doing the the three man rush as much as rider fans hated watching it, No QB pressure, defense very predictable, No identity. Cant blame Glenn, he played super, but i would bench Crapigna, he cost us two games. Time for him to sit out, we are losing with him in, might as well try that other guy Quinn out

“He’s a life-long Rider,” Jones began during an exclusive interview with the Regina Leader-Post. “When you strictly look at Darian’s win-loss record (58-54-1), he’s been moderately successful. He’s won the one Grey Cup. He’s certainly a guy that you can put out there if you surround him with great players that can lead you.

Please to those who do it; stop with the "we were close" routine. A loss is a loss and close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Crapigna missed a FG in Montreal and one here last night. If he makes them we are 1 win and one tie at worst. That's 3 out of 4 points and undefeated. I'll take it. Instead we are 0-2 with 0 points. Does anyone actually get it? If your kicking hame isn't up to snuff, you will lose in this CFL game. We have a better kicker waiting in the wings so activate him. Have Crapigna's bags packed with a bus ticket. If he were an NFL kicker it wouldn't even be up for discussion. How many more games are we willing to lose because of him. Those two losses may have taken this team out of a shot for a playoff spot in the tough west. No open for discussion!

Glenn does what he does. he can make some good plays but also has never been a leader and never will. For every good play there is a bone head play that usually impacts us negatively. He is not starting QB material, plain and simple.

For all of Jones defensive talent (supposedly) and all of the athleticism he claims he has, why is his defence so putrid? Maybe he needs a DC? because I'm not seeing anything resembling a defence out there.

When you lose consistently in any sport it's usually a true sign that you don't have the level of talent needed to be a winner consistently. We are short on talent starting behind center. O-line sucks as does the D-line. Players or schemes but likely players. A good reliable kicker and we are undefeated.

It's all about the level of talent.

Phil Stone said...

Only a fool would think that the Riders were in any way destined to get to the Grey Cup in 2017. Its all about building for the future once the next generation elite QB arrives to take us to the promised land. In the meantime, it is great entertainment, both watching exciting games, big plays and new talent emerge. Some people do forget, it seems, that at the end of the day it is all about the entertainment and staying behind your team through good and bad (like a marriage) and waiting for that rush that comes with a victory. (I do miss the rush I must confess).

But never once did Jones say Dressler wasn't any good anymore that's just people who have no clue talking.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda........................didn't. It's not all Crapigna. He didn't throw a pass right to Mincy on the Als 12 yard line. Lost points. He didn't fumble on the 30 in Mtl - no points. He wasn't the guy letting Dressler run by him for 2 TD's or left Washington alone for another one. Gift wrapped 21 Wpg points. Shouldn't the coach be saying something the 1st time a pass flies over the DB's to Dressler? How about next drive when they have 2 DB's on 3 guys? If you're not lined up properly don't coaches see this & call a time out? Wouldn't you think that the DC would be CERTAIN to make sure this doesn't happen again before they step on the field & for the THIRD consecutive drive leave a guy wide open? Crapigna is the least of our problems. Sorry 0-2 looks about right for this team.

You need a kicker who can make kicks under pressure. Crapigna fails there. As for DD, Dressler and Chick being overpaid, they were willing/ and did negotiate their salaries downward. Jones needs help on the GM side. Why can Hamilton pay Collaros $510K and also pay Chick? Whats Riders paying Glenn? $200K max? So there is $ if managed right. Face it Bakari Grant, AC Leonard and Glenn and NOT as good as Dressler, Chick and DD. As for Glenn, typical game, Accurate, great stats, just good enough to lose. When the game was on the line. 1 min 30 seconds to go, or the first OT first and 10 on the 20 he came up with zilch. That's why hes a journeyman. 6-8 wins max with Glebn as your QB. its not hprrible, but it is mediocre.

Most Rider fans have been fans since they were old enough to go to the games with parents and/or understand even just a little of what the Riders are all about. None that I'm aware of have been fans since birth. Cognitive reasoning doesn't begin that soon except I guess if your name is Robert. Get over yourself.

Nothing that DD did last week caused Montreal to win. Very little of what Dressler did caused Winnipeg to win. Both losses can be attributed to what we didn't do when the chips are down. Fumbles, blown coverage, poor plays happened … yes…but for both teams. In the end our kicker didn't kick a fieldgoal he should have. That was the point at which the game was either to be won, tied, or lost. The only reason we are not 1-0-1 is because at the point in the game where we had to do what it takes to win, we choked. In 1989 Ridgeway did't choke. Some guys get it done and some guys don't. We had a chance to seize control but didn't. Iy was 40-40 and we had a chance at a tie at least but again didn't get er done!. The ONLY thing that counts is the score at the end of the game. We had a chance two weeks in a row to come away with points but didn't. Winnipeg had a chance and they walked away the Victors cause that's the way it works.

Point to as many plays as you want but when it comes down to crunch time, it's the final play that counts.

This team has a ways to go before they can be called "moderately successful". Jones also said about Durant that numbers don't lie, concerning Doubles win/loss numbers. Those numbers don't lie about Jones win/ loss record as a GM, head coach and DC either. Not hard to keep up with the Jones in the CFL again this year.

You gotta to be Fn kidding, oday???? lapolice???? proven losers!
Mr. Jones here to stay with his 5 year contract, he's the man, get used to it.

Time to bring back Paul McCallum.

Will people stop saying we would be 1 win, 1 tie if Crapigna made the two field goals! Even if he had made the fg last night, Winnipeg could have still won with a TD.

Sorry I'm a girl... this week I have to disagree. Durant did not beat us in Montreal. He played an average game with lots of mistakes. His $400K yearly salary is not worth his performance last week or this week. He is good but needs to be in a performance based salary and he refuses because he knows his performance will not get him the money. Life is a guarantee for Durant in Montreal and the team will do average at best. The Riders lost the game. In no way did Durant beat the Riders.
As for Dressler... any slot playing in our second game would have scored those 2 TDs and if they were 6' tall probably would have scored a third TD when the ball was just out of Weston's hand. It was all blown coverages. Not Dressler playing outstanding.

Ok I will give Jones style points this year. As our loses seem to be more intriguing and have more style. Why lose in down right spankings. When you can lose with intrigue and ridiculousness. I never thought we would ever see a repeat of the loveable loser years in SK. However they seem to have reappeared. Pretty soon the song 11 years is enough ( not making the playoffs for 11 years) will have to be revived to 3 years. As social media has installed anxiety to the point of panic in Rider fans. I hate this as much as the next guy. Let's give the regime the first 6 games before the torches and pitch forks come out.
Remember it's a game people. Not a definition of who we are.

We get to see who stands alone in last place after that game. I would wager Austin will easily out-coach Jones for the win.

How is this a great team being built exactly. I'm over the players being let go and I'm over the fines. But I have not seen much improvement on this team since day one a bunch of no names that can't play consistently. With a very small handful of good players. The coaching has been horrible both games. The last Jones comment has me thinking he is a little worried about his job. Trying to look good by blaming himself but the problem is I don't think he actually believes it is his fault. Hopefully he can get it going so I can change my opinion on him. I feel very weird not being a fan of the coach of my team. I even still liked Chamblain before he got canned.

This team should have been winning after 8 games last year, this is taking way to long to get done .jones may have been ok at d. Coach on good teams, but this is completely different. We don't even have a q.b. And he's not even playing the younger guys to get them experience, he may as well, I don't see this going anywhere soon.

Any "good" team starts with a quality QB. Now we may be able to bring one of the young guys along but that's not where we need to be as a team right now. We need to win and win consistently hence we need a good QB. Right now Jennings is under contract with no likelihood of him signing on in Edmonton, and they know that. He is what we need and the sooner the better. He is worth a couple 1st round picks etc. and the Riders should be making a deal happen. Jones knows he can get him for free at seasons end but Jones may have to consider that he may not be here at seasons end to see that. Jennings would put the controversy aside regarding our QB and allow us to focus on other areas. We have some great receivers but we need someone to get them the ball consistently and accurately.

I am tired of all you negative nellies bagging about everything from fire Jones to slamming Glenn. OK lets hear who you would have hired as coach, GM and Director of Player Personnel. Go ahead and explain to me how you would improve the team. That should be good for a laugh. How about shutting up about Dressler, Chick, Durant and all the other bromance ex-players.
Well?????

well well well Mr.Pedersen I think I am finally begining to understand your derogatory Winnipegish euphemism..beating the Riders in the grand opening of there fancy new legacy building stadium..very "Winnipegish"..having a Kicker who may very well be considered this generations "ROBO Kicker" very "Winnipegish".. and finally opening the season with a win in a game you said yourself is a "must win"..very very Winnipegish..The only thing not Winnipegish Saturday night..the fact that 50/50 didn't go to a Friendly Manitoban..that I guess was very Albertaish!! From the Immortal words of Rick Flair "WHOO"

Some guy forgot to take his Midol pill today…….

anybody with an IQ over 10, rudimentary knowledge of football, and the visual acuity of Stevie Wonder could identify the areas the team needs to be better in…..

You either win or lose! We done far to much of the latter over the last few years. Some people don't like to face reality...

Blame dd for that one cause I think the football gods moved that post ever so slightly so no one would see and the ball would hit it! That's it those darn football gods..mabe Jones should sacrifice a virgin or something to appees those football gods cause he doesn't seem to be in their good books..How many God's is there anyway?

Until we get a legit top QB (and Durant was/is not the guy), there is no reason to talk about anything else.

Robert in Kelowna, you hit the nail right on the head.
I am SO FED UP WITH THE WAGON JUMPERS. They want to get rid of CJ & Reynolds. They think they should turn the team around in 1 or 2 years. Who in hell are they going to get that can do a better job???? Absolutely NO ONE. Further do they want management or the Board to ok paying AGAIN for fired people??
As Robert said, if you don't like it stay away & don't watch on tv.
Get rid of the kicker????? What a STUPID COMMENTHe is one heck of a good kicker with a great future. Get OFF HIS BACK.
It should NEVER come down to blaming one player. As many people have said there were many opportunities for the Riders to have been
In the winning position before that failed kick.
Regarding the QB , at least KG can read defences& look off one receiver to another. I dare say Mr. DD still has difficulty in that respect.
KG completion percentage is VERY RESPECTFULL.
TO SUM UP, GET OFF THE CJ. For U Anonymous people, have the gut's to say who you are!!!!!!!

Firstly I didn't have the opportunity to chose the candidates nor the chance to interview them. But I would of hired a gm then the gm would hire a coach and the gm would hire a player personal director. Then it would be up to the coach to hire his staff. Three separate hires. Because it's just to big of a job for one individual. Then proved out last year. The board keeps a eye on the gm and he on the coach. That way a lot of mistakes and fines are avoided. You would of made changes but not of the wholesale variety. In a rebuild it's necessary to drop about a third of the players a year. No more as we found out. Mr. Jones gave us a perfect example what not to do in the first year. Are you happy now!!!

The kick would have never happened if the Command Centre wouldn't have botched the so called incomplete pass call and ruled it for what it was, a fumble.

Jones is getting 3 years not firing him and paying him for another 1+plus years along with taman and chamblin who I think is off the books now that he's working again in Toronto. Give the guy a chance like when shivers took over a sh_t show of a team. I believe the quote was from shivers... "I looked at the roster and almost puked" this will take more than 1 1/2 years.
