10 THINGS I THINK I THINK

Matt Smith/CFL.ca
*Originally posted to my Facebook page on July 9/2017:

1 - Now We Roll? The Riders' 37-20 win over Hamilton on Saturday was huuuuuuge. It moved them out of the winless club (only the RedBlacks and Ticats live there now), it built crucial confidence and above all else, it gave us ALL reason for hope!

2 - The Riders did it with generally the same roster from the past two weeks (including embattled kicker Tyler Crapigna). Chris Jones showed confidence in his players by sticking by them and they rewarded their coach with the win. Btw NO ONE was ever worried about Crapigna's mental state.

3 - The Riders did fairly little differently than the other games other than scrapping the 3-man rush. They simplified the game plan a bit but overall, they just turned 'em loose. DE Willie Cinco Jefferson did admit however, that the 4-man rush made his life a lot easier.

Their communication on defense seemed a heckuva lot better than last week against Winnipeg too. One or two slips, yes, but not ones which cost them the game.

4 - You say the win only came against the lowly Ticats? Stop it. The Riders had won only 10 of their prior 47 games. Again, this victory was huuuuuuuge.

5 - Next up, the Riders visit the Calgary Stampeders on July 22 in the CFL's oldest stadium. Let's take it over! It will be great to see the Tractor Factor come out in full force that night and turn McMahon Stadium into McMosaic Stadium (again).

6 - There are TONS of things to be excited about in the CFL right now: amazing games, electrifying players, beautiful new stadiums and a fantastic Commissioner! The 2017 season is a blast to be a part of.

Now, to get Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal engaged. They're missing out! Although Southern Ontario is full of "closet" CFL fans.

7 - All the pressure will be on the Calgary Stampeders in that July 22 meeting with the Green & White. They're "supposed" to win because they're the CFL's best team. But the Riders are coming back from the dead. I feel the worst is over.

Thanks Toronto Blue Jays for the distraction the past couple years, but the Green Canada's Team is ready to regain centre stage again.

8 - It won't take much for the Rider Nation to warm up to Chris Jones. Sure he cut their heroes, but the Riders were 3-15 in the last year with all those guys. A few more wins this summer and Jones will be the toast of the town. And he'll be able to wear whatever shirt he wants on the sidelines.

Having said that, I think the Chris Jones impersonator is infantile, childish and insulting to the head of our professional football team. IMHO.

9 - Walking into New Mosaic Stadium NEVER gets old. The TSN guys call it "the nicest facility in Canada and it's not close". On the radio side, wiring it for broadcast has been like constructing an entirely new radio station (I'm told) so it's been a massive undertaking. But so worthwhile to call the finest stadium in the land, "home". I just love it so, so much.

10 - Congrats to former Rider Therapist Schad Richea for being named the new Head Athletic Therapist at Brandon University on Friday. Way to go Schad!

*BIRTHDAYS* Happy 35th Birthday on Thursday to Rider alum Tad Kornegay (DB, 2007-2011)!

This part of Rider Nation will never warm up to Chris Jones, regardless how many games he wins or what he wears on the sidelines. For me, he can never erase the fines he racked up or the disrespect that he has shown to both players and fans. It is as not as simple as having cut our heroes but rather the manner in which it was done. Even some players who were not here long enough to be heroes were treated badly. I cannot cheer for that, in spite of the criticism that I get for it.
As for the impersonator, suck it up.it is humorous. The guy is infantile, childish and insulting? Oh and Chris Jones is honourable and intelligent? Those three words, infantile, childish and insulting, kind of sum up how Jones handled some of our heroes.

Considering that's taken 3 games into season 2 to go away from the 3 man rush, when both fans & Rider bloggers have been calling for it, Chris doesn't seem to like change from his system. Now he has simplified his system to a few basic fronts, he says. That sounds a lot like it's not my system that's the problem but the players don't get it. Why not just admit that his 3 man rush hasn't worked as has been commented upon by lots of people.

Blah...blah...blah! Get over it! Go be a fan of lawn bowling, its more your speed and you won't get so butt hurt sunshine!

Chris Jones may have hurt a lot of people's feelings with the way he does business but quite frankly there is not a good way to tell a fan favorite he is not wanted anymore. He is not going to win any prizes for his gentle nature but we are talking about grown men who are doing a job and being evaluated on that job every year. There are some things he probably wishes he did differently but he walked into the job of rebuild and faced many unforeseen obstacles. This year has been a much more normal scenario for him to build a team and if people would just give the man a chance they might actually see he has done some good things already. Do not spend the year looking for ways to be negative and you might actually have some fun enjoying some good football. It's your choice.

As an aside NFL Network ran a show about the 2006 Rose Bowl. In depth about how everyone feared VY and Pete Carroll had fear in his eyes watching VY take over. Wonder if he will ever show up in Rider green again. Just watching him play that game you can just hope. Glenn is doing well but watching VY run untouched on a small field you would think he could dominate up here if he was in half decent shape. Glenn still has too many killer crunch time plays for me.

Great column as usual Rod. I totally agree with you that the CFL should retain the West and East divisions and Scruffy should get his head out of you know what and forget his idea of one 9-team division. The East/West rivalry is one of the best in sports and the dominance by one division or the other is cyclical. I do have to disagree with you about the section 28 not being allowed to stand in their seats. Sure NMS has great standing areas to view the field from almost all areas of the stadium, but I have season tickets (not in 28) and I'll stand and cheer all game long if I want to. That's why we go to the games!! I appreciate that some fans can't stand and I'll be respectful as possible, but I have to say they should give up their seats and sit in their Lazy Boy at home if they can't stand up and cheer. Lastly, little Bo peep should utilize social media as much as he wants, but he should be subject to fines just like any coach who criticizes officiating, regardless if he's playing in the game or not. Can't wait until the Riders front seven play the Stamps and knock him on his kiester...all game long!

Next week all the confidence you gained from Calgary is gone gone gone...Stamps are going to make you look like a high school team.

I'm a big fan of Chris Jones. He's a good ol' boy who's a football fanatic. He's Friday Night Lights. He's eats, breathes, poops football. The people who don't like him would rather have clowns like Brendan Taman and the old boys club running things again. You cut my little Dressler, my John Chick, my Darian Durant....suck it up ya bunch of nancies, they're gone.

There are lots of great new players that will become your new favourite. Willie Jefferson, Duran Carter, Henoc Muamba, Derek Dennis, Naaman Roosevelt, etc, etc, etc...

Get on board while you can, the Riders will ride high once again!!!

Anonymous said...

I hope the 4 man rush eats the Calgary O Line for dinner and Bo has a horrendous game. Riders 28, Calgary 19.

Anonymous said...

I knew the criticism would come. Lawn bowling really? I love the CFL. Why are you so hurt that I dislike your hero, Jones? We all have the right to choose our heroes.

Anonymous said...

Its about time that CKRM moves to being a 24 hours Sports radio. Now-a- days logically there is should only be music on FM, and talk on AM. The Sports Cage should be a full 4 hours in the afternoon and there should be a morning show from 8 am to noon on sports hopefully done by Mitchell Blair (maybe called 'Sports Talk with Scruffy'). Between then would be national and US feeds.

Anonymous said...

I like Chris jones too but I don't like the way that people on here throw out name calling to people that don't instead of just putting facts out to prove their point. It sounds like high school students arguing just name calling no actual debate on why their opinion is different. Everybody has a right to their opinion and shouldn't be name called for it. This is Canada a free country. If you don't like someone else's opinion don't get so upset over it just be happy we have our great game and can debate about it.

Anonymous said...

It took him this long to figure out his stupid 3 man rush wasn't working
And we lost one of the best d lineman
Because of it (ShawnLemon)

Anonymous said...

The only way the score will be 28-19 is if the Riders start the game this week.

Anonymous said...

I don't care if Chris Jones goes undefeated for the rest of the year, I still can't wait until he's gone.
I won't be supporting the Riders until then, because he doesn't deserve any support.

I gave the man a chance and he gave me 160,000 reasons to not like him. Some unforseen obstacles? Like following league rules? Like not playing enough Canadians? Like having too many players around? Like accumulating $160,000 in fines? Like telling George Reed that he wasn't welcome at practices?
I still enjoy good football, just not Jones' football. Being a good coach and having some class are not mutually exclusive. I am very positive, about other teams.

Anonymous said...

The people who whine about Jones aren't REAL fans. I don't care what kind of excuses you naysayers come up with, the comments are bush league. Fine, go away until Jones is gone - we don't need you! This is professional sports, not your kids pee wee team. Winning is the business.

Anonymous said...

If winning is the business Chris jones isn't much of a business man. I I don't get it Cory chamblin won us a grey cup on home turf and people couldn't wait to get him out of here now people love Chris jones like he has done something worthwhile here. News flash he hasn't done anything but collect fines for cheating and still lose but les let him keep running the entire show and losing.

Name one single available coach you would rather have here right now. Ray Jauch perhaps? In Jones I Trust!

You know it was real nice that we beat Hamilton last Sat. but enough is enough. Hamilton has not got a great football team and neither do we. Tons of penalties ( Especially against Hamilton) and some bad plays , that is really why we won the game. Yes, Glenn had a pretty solid game but every time you go on here or look at the sports in the paper all you see is Vanstone blowing his lid about how great the Riders played and how much better the Riders looked. Same on here with Scruffy and Pedersen.
AND NOW THE REAL STORY... Wait until next Sat. July 22nd when the Riders are in Calgary.
I hope with all my heart that the Riders come out on top against the Stamps, but lets just keep it a little lower until that happens, and then we will all know just how good the Riders will be for the rest of the season. " Go Riders" !

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty unhappy about the fines. He's either incompetent or a cheat. I don't buy the conspiracy theories. But the players seem to love him and I think we're close to becoming good.

Cutting the heroes? Not a big deal to me. I've seen it before and heard all the complaining.

I'm excited about our new players! I always said glen was doing better than Durant when we had hem both here.

Glad some people love the new stadium. Hopefully il get to see it someday. Great stadium but it really only benefits those that have a direct stake in the riders for about ten days a year. The other 1,000,000 people in the province won't get much benefit from it for the other 300+ days a year.

But it's done so might as well quit whining about it. Just please quit with the routine that "anyone not excited about the new stadium is against progress" routine. I built a new house but as most of us do, I never went over the top on it.

Get over your hero worship! VY is done and never really had a chance to begin with. Long shot at best.

Anonymous said...

Not bloody likely.

Anonymous said...

Boo hoo, people dont like Chris Jones. Suck it up buttercup.

Anonymous said...

Jones is not my hero! I don't hero worship like you! He is the coach and I support him like a real fan should! Hero's fight and die for their country, they don't play football!

Anonymous said...

I dispise Chris Jones. Ive been a die-hard my entire life. Anyone who calls someone else a fake fan is usually the type who knows zip about football.

Anonymous said...

Here is a basic fact for you that you jones lovers will love and can start making your excuses now - after the next 5 games the riders record will be 7 loses and 1 win

There is no one in the next 5 games that they can beat with jones around.

Anonymous said...

It will be sweet to walk into Calgary and bring those cocky Stampeders back down to earth. BLM will be running for his life all night! Perhaps he should get off twitter and actually worry about football! Go Riders Go!

Birddog said...

The Jones haters sound almost like the Durant haters of the past they have to hate someone. Go Riders.

Anonymous said...

I guess if I have to accept without question some of the things that Jones has done, you are right, I am not a real fan by your definition. I will not support a coach that has behaved as Jones has. I will support and respect a coach that doesn't cheat and deserves respect.

Anonymous said...

Ooooohh! That really hurts.

Anonymous said...

I do not feel compelled to hate anyone. Neither do I feel compelled to trust and support Jones in whatever he does. He has behaved badly, in both words and actions, compiling an unprecedented amount of fines. One win should make me forget all his cheating and become what you refer to as a real fan? Another fifteen wins won t make me a Chris Jones fan.

Nice post Rod, this is why I come to this blog, plus the local sporting news. I don't understand why the Craft Brewers Association think they are entitled to beer sales in New Mosaic Stadium! Molsons has been a fantastic and important sponsor of the Riders for years. Without Molsons and other sponsors the new stadium and possibly the Riders would not exist. The CEO of Great West is on Gormley whining about the deal. The option of serving craft beer in Confederation Park was fair and reasonable. They turned it down are you kidding me!

Anonymous said...

According to some of the posts on here, I can't be a Roughrider fan unless I like Chris Jones. Is that the official party line?

Anonymous said...

What is the difference between not liking the coach and not being a fan. Some of these idiots on here and because you're anonymous I don't know if you're one of them however the people that cannot wait for them to lose games so he will get fired cannot seriously consider themselves Rider fans. A true fan cheers for the team no matter who the player or coaches are you want your team to be successful. Some of these idiots just hate Jones so much they want the team to lose. Do you consider that a fan?
Brady

Anonymous said...

There is no official patty line. Follow your head and your heart and be a Rider fan or not, and like Jones or not. Fortunately, in this country, we can be a fan of whoever we want. Having said that, be prepared to be called some derogatory names if you confess to not liking, respecting or supporting Chris Jones.

Some people who post here are just disturbed perhaps should seek professional help

In the grand scheme of things nobody, and I mean nobody gives a crap whether any of you clowns like the coaches or not.

Great Western is sold at the Brandt Centre. Suck it up boys. You had a chance to have some product sold at the building, and you didn't want it. Tough luck!

1) Don't get me started on 24 hour sports radio in this town. CKRM could kill it with the likes of Rod and the old Scruffdog. What they do and how they cover sports is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than the pretenders at CJME that it isn't funny. I'm sure the ratings show that. It would make me listen to the old 620 more than I do now. (stop when Flea Market comes on and come back for Cage)

2) Speaking of CJME, they should be embarassed to have Mike Sweeney working for them for what he is doing. Then again, Wray Morrison has embarassed them for over a decade and they haven't realized that yet. I think it would be highly entertaining to have Fake Chris Jones interview Chris Jones after a practice. Perhaps Arielle Zerr can hand him his microphone and then just stand there and look pretty while the real CJ does some "lip rippin".

3) The Jones haters are slowly starting to see that some of the moves were made to improve this team. I think he might admit with no microphones in the vicinity the Dressler release was a bad one, but he has shown he isn't going to pay big money to older players. Didn't Wally do that for years? How did that turn out.

4) The CFL shoots themselves in the foot again. That woman should be getting a cheque for one million bucks, but some idiot calls a penalty for no reason. Good job!

5) Ballsy SUCKS!

6) Passed Big Bird in downtown Regina this week. That looks to be a sweet ride!

Some of you wonder why we post as anonymous. Just in the comments of this article, anyone that doesn't like Jones have been called idiots, clowns, nancies, fake fans (certainly not "real fans") and, how could I forget, sunshine. We have been told to get lost and to seek professional help. Absolutely no facts as to what makes Jones so great. To quote the article, "infantile, childish and insulting". Still wondering why we post anonymously?

I think I would feel a lot better going up against Calgary with durant , I'm not to confident in how glen will do against the stamps . Cautiously optomistic

Anonymous said...

On one hand they want to force t he rider to support local craft beer , and then on the other foot they are trying to sell off Sasktel . Yeah, can't have it both ways, you either support local with local or you don't. Free enterprise, isn't that this gov'ts motto

I understand both sides of the argument over Jones. Yes as solid fans we should back what ever regime is in place. Simply because it's the team we cheer for. Not the coaches. Keep in mind we all love the "S" Players and coaches will come and go but the "S" lives forever. So much so that upon the passing of some of the Riders avid fans. They are buried in Rider clothing. I know this as I have seen it 1st hand.
For those of you choosing not to like Jones because of cheating. Honestly the only difference between Jones and every other Head Coach is that Jones was caught. The reason for the insane fines was due to the amount of people and fans that pay attention to this franchise. If the Riders are both the most watched team and the self appointed top franchise in the league. Then they are going to be held to the highest of standards. Toronto could cheat day in and day out and the chances of anyone saying anything is pretty slim. Get use to being under a microscope as every decision for the Riders; be it good or bad gets the most response. If anyone wants something to travel through the league as fast as possible. Hit the Rider's with it.
I'm sure the Bombers would be a very close second. As they too have a lot of attention with a great fan base.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, I don't believe in the conspiracy theory that the Riders are picked on. I believe other teams are just smarter and not so blatant. Jones thought he was untouchable and found out he was wrong. The "why is everybody always picking on me" is getting old. The truth is that Jones is not smart enough to be GM.

Every market in the CFL has a sports radio station except Regina. That needs to change! TSN620?

You can validate (or invalidate) your theory tonight. Durant does seem to have Calgary's number in the playoffs anyways.
