10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR AUTO EXTREME REGINA

10 Things I Think I Think for Auto Extreme Regina. Celebrate the relaunch of Auto Extreme with a trip to the Caribbean! The first 20 customers this week with $2000 of work or SGI claims will be entered.

1 - We said Saturday's Roughriders-Stampeders game would tell us a lot about both teams. It did! The 27-10 Calgary victory showed the Stampeders are still the class of the West and the Roughriders still have a ton of work to do. The youngest team in the CFL has to grow up FAST.

2 - I asked Rider Hall of Famer Dan Rashovich on CKRM's halftime show what Chris Jones has to do to wake his team up. Razz responded "It's not Jones! It's the players!" It's true. Right now 1-3 is on the players. However when all is said and done (in November), Jones will be responsible for whatever transpires. That's how it works.

3 - In the aftermath of Saturday's lopsided loss, CKRM colour man Luc Mullinder explained, "We learned a lot about the Roughriders tonight and right now ... the truth hurts". The performance was inexplicable. Hopefully come Saturday when the Riders host Toronto, they'll be adequately ticked off enough to go out and prove they ARE a good football team. It's time.

4 - Trailing 17-0 at halftime in Calgary, my first thought in the broadcast booth was "The bye week killed this team". The week off stalled any momentum coming out of the win over Hamilton on July 8, and it was the culprit for the team coming out flat against the Stamps. It's no excuse, but it's a reason.

5 - Despite the pain of the loss, I'd still rather lose with Saskatchewan than win with Calgary. That may not be a logical stance - or even a popular one - but it's honestly how I feel. Even the bad times in the 306 are better than the good times anywhere else!

6 - The attendance was poor at McMahon Stadium and without Rider fans, the place would've seemed empty. The fact is Stampeders fans have been spoiled by their team's excellence since John Hufnagel showed up. Winning has become boring for Calgary football fans. In a very twisted way, try to ENJOY the drama associated with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Dallas Cowboys have thrived on it for 20 years.

7 - This Saturday when Calgary hosts Hamilton, the Stampeders will hold a 25-year reunion for the 1992 Grey Cup champs. Doug Flutie will be there but Wally Buono won't, even though BC is at Edmonton the night before. The message from Wally basically is "I'm a Lion now". Please discuss.

8 - Cory Chamblin is coming to town with the Argos on Saturday and even got a message to me through a mutual friend on the weekend. The simple fact is, I love Cham! It didn't end well but I think he's a FANTASTIC coach and appreciate all he did for this franchise. He's also cool as hell. The past is the past and I, for one, will be real glad to see him.

9 - Rider fans are justifiably hot right now but some are going overboard with their ridiculousness. Cutting Rob Bagg? Trading for James Franklin at this juncture? Give me a break. EVERYONE is in this together so let's cool off and see how it all turns out. It's still JULY.

Oh, and the best seats in the house for Saturday's game against Toronto are still available in the AGT Lounge. A tad pricy? Yes. But why not enjoy the CFL's finest stadium in luxury with food included? Call the Rider ticket office this week or visit the Mosaic Stadium box office in person.

10 - It was an unsightly crowd in Toronto on Monday as Doug Flutie was honoured by the Argos. They said there were 15,801 there but I don't believe it. Did the 27,000 seat facility look over half full? Try 25% full, at best.

The biggest culprit for lagging CFL attendance this year? Over-priced tickets in many markets.

Meanwhile CFL TV ratings in the GTA remain golden for Argo games. The Argos are the girl who Toronto calls at 2 am for some lovin', but won't take her out on a date.

Just my $0.02.

Y'er welcome,
RP

The tv comment is right on. The game vs. T.O. hinges on both lines. Smashmouth rules on Saturday. We drive 1600 kms for each home game. Please show some jam, big guys. Show some love to us fan type idiots who pay for their Rider love in many ways.

The players are at fault but i blame Jones for bringing in the wrong players and cutting players at will! Im not convinced we have enough talent here to win.

Anonymous said...

The talents there, you could see it in the first 3 games. They are young, we just need a little patience.

There is a staggering long list of events that GM's and coaches miss during the season. It would be a bigger shock for Wally to be there. None of the players that will be there will be surprised be his absence. It is a testament to his commitment to excellence, I sure it would be nice to go get smoke blown up his butt reflecting on past but that wouldn't make the Lions better for their game against the Riders the next week. I would guess every GM in the league would skip under the same circumstances (including our percieved glory hound Rider GM/King)

The attendance was poor at McMahon stadium...just over 30,000 seats sold is poor, what a stupid comment. Just trying to dig at the Stamps because they walked on you from start to finish...poor sports is what that is. Not a Stamps fan either but you guys in Sask are ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

2: So who recruited these players that are at fault.

Anonymous said...

Losing with the Riders is better than winning with the Stamps? Bad times in the 306 are better than good time anywhere else?…OH MY! Those type of comments reference far more than any number of analogies possibly could. These were the very things the Riders brass said they wanted to distance themselves from. They want sustained excellence and being in a place where this entrenched mediocrity was no longer a "thing".

Calgary starts out with better management over the last decade. They follow it up with better scouts recruiting better talent. Then they have better coaches coaching up this better talent. The final product is therefore bound to be superior to what we have. If they are short something they go out and trade the extra talent they usually have laying around and get what they need. They don't wait.

We had a great GM but he was run out of town by the "moral minority". We deserve what we got. Nobody will ever be a success here. If he's from within the fan base will say we should have gone outside. If he's from outside then he will never be as good as the home grown type. The Rider fans for the most part are the team's worst enemy…Fact! We run out excellence for one reason or another. Probably because we relish the title of "The CFL's loveable losers". I truly believe that it's a moniker that many in this province dearly love and relate to. That sustained success crap is for Calgary or BC but not for us…no siree Bob. We love commiserating over our incompetence and lowly team. Hell it's who we are and it's ingrained. The two opening lines of this post are testament to that fact.

It's reasonable and rational to want a high end QB. We tried this Gleen thing a few years back where he won a number of games in flukey manner until he got hurt and the wheels fell off. Even after he returned we were in the tank. It didn't end well and never will….it never has for any team. Even his injury of 2007 may have given us the GC. We need what we don't have. It entirely reasonable for fans to want that. In fact it should be a priority to get that. Winnipeg has done much better since they found one. A guy brought in as a backup should understand his role. We are trying what 8 other teams and ourselves have tried before with no cigar…Isn't the definition of insanity "continuing to do the same thing and expect a different result" ????

CFL FACTOID;
QB Trevor Harris could have been a Saskatchewan Roughrider, sadly both gm's, Taman and O'Day-(interm gm) shot that down during their tenures at the helm.

Nowuknow.

Anonymous said...

5: So you'd rather lose with the Riders than win with the Stamps. Think about it Rod. If you were the Stamps PxP man you could say all the nice things you say about the Roughriders, except they'd be true.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Point 7 - great you like Saskatchewan & you'd rather lose than be anywhere else. Thanks from the rest of the CFL cities. Point 4 - yes, of course the bye week is the culprit, nothing to do with the state of the team. Let's see, Winnipeg had the bye in week 1 & beat the Riders the following week. Edmonton had the bye week 3 & also won the next week. But whatever. Point 2. Of course it's the players - why not throw them under the bus one more time. It's NOT Jones. Er, who brought the players in? Who holds them accountable? Who's game plan was it to throw only 6 passes longer than 11 yards (4 incomplete) - not exactly stretching the field. Why again are we giving up TD's on defence to wide open receivers? Shouldn't the DC have corrected this by now? Point 6 - what would the rest of the league do w/o Rider fans to pump up the attendance figures? I know - that never gets old. Point 1 - nothing to prevent Jones from bringing in older players - poor us, we have the league's youngest team. Point 9 - let's all cool down. Hmm, good advice. Perhaps we should all not panic, yes? Just the opinion of an outsider. No offence, Riderville.

First 3 games were against weak teams, I don't think the taken team is anywhere near what it needs to be, they were pummelled in Calgary, and I also don't think Kevin Glen will get us anywhere. I don't know why they keep pushing him. I like Kevin , good guy .but not going anywhere with him. , to slow getting rid of ball, where durant had that legs to get out of trouble, he also beat jones in playoffs twice.against Calgary, knocked them out of the playoffs. Durant could make it happen when it counted.

Jones has one big problem ... "Friends with benefits", benefit being you have a job with me no matter what.

He has people in coaching positions floundering. Popp/Trestman crew showed up late in Toronto, missed free agency and they've still managed to coach their team into a position to win. QB situation aside,we on the other hand seem to have an issue with mental mistakes, players get confused easily and seem ill prepared in comparison and to mean that is all in the preparation.

Hopefully our coaching staff can figure it out but I'm starting to feel like our problems go deep, to deep to turn around mid season for a bunch of men with to much ego and bravado.

Blame the Toronto media for not helping marketing the Argos in the news! All you hear is the losing Blue Jays and the Toronto FC. Also there's little to no marketing from Argos front office. Blue Jays had a game in Toronto last night too.

Anonymous said...

You call the stamps still the class of the west? By beating a last place riders team? Are you for real lol what about the FIRST place 4-0 Eskies or the 4-1 Lions wow just wow I guess the Riders one game Grey Cup parade is O-V-E-R

Anonymous said...

Argos are going to put you 1 and 4...they have it going on defence and Ray is 5 times the Qb Glenn will ever be.

Anonymous said...

Last time I looked, it wasn't the job of the Toronto media to market football games. Maybe that should be up to the team? Just sayin'!

Anonymous said...

All these excuses I hear from the radio crew sound like the excuses they used last year. I think we were supposed to be a playoff team each year, well I don't know what they were smoking. The teams around us didn't get weaker and we didn't get substantially better so bottom of the standings.

So Winnipegish.

Anonymous said...

Ricky Ray about to go 50 for 50 for 500 yards in Regina.

Anonymous said...

Jones should hire himself as a consultant to figure out what is wrong. Of course this job comes with a substantial salary.

Anonymous said...

According to CFL Stats, the Stamps average crowd last year was 27,474. According to their stats for the first 2 games of 2017 the average crowd is 27,443. Pretty much on par with last year. I remember when the Riders won the cup at home in 2013, the following off season and early into the next year there wasn't much buzz. Fans don't complain when their team is winning, they sit back and enjoy the good life. That's why Sask fans love the Riders, gives them something to complain about besides the weather and poor crops. Since the Riders only grace us with a winning team every once in awhile we complain more.

Anonymous said...

The fact is that there is a lack of talent on the Riders. And Jones spent a lot of money trying to recruit in the US. What the heck has Murphy done? Everyone else is able to find good quality players but not the Riders. It is all on Jones.

Anonymous said...

Bring back Taman! At least his ego wouldn't get in the way of improving the Riders!

Anonymous said...

Harris = overrated. Now u know.

Anonymous said...

Wow...just finished listening to the cage podcast from Monday...Luc and Aboo sure get defensive when their feelings get hurt. Aboo says "Im NOT YOUR BUDDY" AND LUC GIVES A SPEECH ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL THEY HAD BEEN MISREPRESENTED ABOUT THEIR COMMENTS. Chill out boys....if ya cant take the heat.........

Wes Cates said on CTV that he was "quite surprised to be honest that it took the Riders coaches so long to make to the necessary adjustments to prevent the mismatches on the line that led to all the pressure and sacks Glen took in the first half. I totally agree. The coaching by this regime is sub par so far. Last year Carm mentioned it over and over. Undisciplined penalties and poor clock management were common.

Still have high hopes for this team. Its a work in progress and I see slow improvement. Of course Calgary won but the Riders were there near the end of the game. They did not get totally blown out. Cant wait to see how the Riders fare against Toronto's great coaching and Ricky Ray. It will be another good test.

I don't have a problem with trying to build a perrenial winner here in sask. That's what we want, we just want to do it with someone else.

CM said...

Coaching matters! Look at Ricky Ray this year vs the last 2. He looks and plays 10 yrs younger under Trestman. Look at Matt Nichols (a pretty avg QB) under LaPolice vs Bellefeuille as OC. We have a lousy OC, and the QB isn't a miracle maker like Reilly.

Anonymous said...

One of the main keys to Stamps success is CONSISTENCY in coaching. We fans etc always want a different coach/QB. And I suspect mgmt listens to that. I liked Chamblin as well. But the pro sports mantras of 'lose and you're gone' 'only as good as your last game/season etc' 'winning is the only thing' (improvement, building, etc doesn't matter) etc. And remember ... all those Stamps numbers are regular season. How about another mantra ... 'Winning the last game of the season is all that counts'.

Fellow Rider fans: I don't like you.

Firing Jones will change nothing. You know who fires coachs a lot? The 49ers and Sabres. Are they any better because of it? NO!!! Coaches cannot and will never ever ever be able to make players better. Y'all are saying this is a rebuild right? A rebuild takes longer than 22 games!!! Like jeez takes three full years at least. How about we fire the fans who don't know how football works.
Oh you don't like Jones cause he cut or traded Getzlaf, Dressler, Chick, Durant? News flash for ya, I don't even know if Getzlaf has a contract. Dressler has had one good game since he was cut. Chick has played awful this season. And DARIAN DURANT is mediocre. Ya that thing called mediocre that y'all hate. He is that. Kevin Glenn won the Hamilton game. Darian Durant hasn't carried a team since the 2013 playoffs. For a bunch of farmers you'd think y'all would have some patience. 4 grey cup appearances from 2007-2013 is not mediocre. 10-8, 3-15, 5-13 are not mediocre. Tell me were the mediocrity is.

Please remember Toronto has 4 professional sports teams. In Regina we have one. Look at the jays over 40000 for a last place team. CFL is tier two sports league.

Anonymous said...

I can see a bye week being an excuse opening week. But week 5? Two weeks to prepare, a closed practice once each week allowed? A well rested team? Where's the disadvantage? Argos come in on a short week with their 2 top d-linemen out as well as Bear Woods probably. No reason to lose this game. But if we do, what's the excuse this week? They had game action 4 days ago & we were rustier?

Anonymous said...

Lose and you're gone doesn't apply if you're midway thru your $700K contract.

Anonymous said...

Meaning? Sarcasm or just well, can't figure it.

Anonymous said...

Are you gunna be ok? Need a hug? Mommy's here sweetheart!

Anonymous said...

I sure hope the City didn't put any beds in that new stadium, cause the Riders are soiling them and I might just soil my new seat if they lose to T.O.... Than who cares about all those fancy new washrooms.I'd rather win and piss in a trough than lose and sit on a throne!

Anonymous said...

Well, as much as I admire your loyalty Rod those were some of the strangest points you've ever made. The Riders are one of those teams that, like the Leafs or Habs, once you cheer for them it's really hard to walk away. No matter how pathetic they become. Lucky me, I cheer for 2 of them.

Anonymous said...

I despise jones and how he runs this team - but Im not calling for him to be fired. I am certain he'll be here until at least the middle of next year.

What I will do is call out all of the moves he makes that I disagree with, until he shuts me up. We'll see if he's actually got what it takes to do that.

Anyone who thinks a CFL team should need three years to rebuild, especially one with the resources the riders have is delusional.

Jones chose to sever ties with a bonafide CFL qb, IN YEAR 2 OF THE REBUILD with no viable replacement. He does not get a pass on that.

Anonymous said...

Rod. It's only July? Trouble is success is the result of preparation and the time for preparation was the off season.

Three years my butt. Nobody told Poop and Tresman that. They have three wins and two losses. We have one win and they had the same record we had last year. When are you going to admit these coaches just aren't good enough.

Anonymous said...

Dressler had over a thousand yards last year and Chick was tied for second in sacks in the CFL last year. The Riders had no thousand yard receivers and no one leading in sacks. Getzlaf has a contract.
I am a farmer. We are not a patient group. This year we are restricted by a lack of moisture, which we have no control over. But we have no patience with bad seed or a bad bull or a bad piece of equipment. We also, as fans, have no patience with bad coaching and second rate players. We do not accept excuses about our seed or our bulls or our tractors. Perform or you are replaceable. We cannot afford anything else and likewise, cannot afford bad coaching or bad players. There is no three or four year window for improvement. Trestman seems to understand that.

Anonymous said...

Newsflash Easternfootballisajoke. Getzlaf does have a contract with the Esks & if you want to know what he contributes to the team, check out TSN's pre-game interview with Maas, Zylstra & Reilly prior to the Hamilton game. Zylstra gives a lot of credit to Getzlaf for his own progression & Maas & Reilly laud him for the professional he is. You know, I follow the Riders too & I understand why Jones didn't want to resign Getzlaf. But he is just the kind of guy the Riders are lacking - a veteran presence to teach the young players what it takes to be a winner. Nice to know so many Rider fans write their former players who brought so much to the team off. As for Eastern teams being a joke, last time I looked 3 of them have more points than the Riders. A rebuild may take 3 years but this is not a rebuild. We have as many changes on the roster this year as last when the previous roster was gutted. Whereas last year Jones gutted the 2015 roster, this year he gutted the 2016 roster. This is Complete Reconstruction, Part B. A rebuild is when you add pieces one year, less pieces the next & in the 3rd year augment the roster here & there. Sorry, it doesn't look like that here.

I agree with Wally. He's a Lion now. He takes the approach I take to High School Reunions. - In pro football you are supposed to win and he did - they fired him anyway. High School you are supposed to graduate and you'll never see me go to a reunion ever.

Life moves on.

Ronny Jr said...

When the Riders are in last place once again, there should be no extreme worry about experimenting with a degree of change. The worry should be more about maintaining the status quo, or doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. So, if I may suggest, as true Riders fans through more lean than glory years, we should all stick together. Debate is healthy. However, instead of commenting upon other teams or other markets in a negative way, expressly or impliedly, and rather than spewing constant criticism, let's all come up with some solutions. I will start it off with (1) the team needs a bona fide number 1 QB. Period. So, to the administration, go and get us someone who can do the job now or is worth the investment for the future. And one more recommendation (2) regardless of how good a coach or GM is or is not, treat others with respect. It can be reciprocated and build strong team bonds. Other ideas?

Anonymous said...

Shows how much you know...Getzlaf has been with Edmonton since start of the year...Dressler one good game, he was a 1000 yard receiver AMD will easily hit that again this year. Chick 14 sacks last season and still playing well just numbers aren't quite there yet this year. Durant is Durant...not a star but is a Qb that can win you a Grey Cup. You sir are very uninformed.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I'm losing confidence in Jones et al. With these receivers we have we should be displaying an arial show, instead we run some simple rinky-dink offense. Defensively, very simple scheme, yet players ALWAYS out of position. Stupid 3 man rush. Don't know how to run a blitz. And on and on. I just don't think these coaches can adjust and critically self-evaluate. And they are all buds, so Jones would never fire one of them. Not a good situation. Losing interest.

Anonymous said...

No, it's so saskatchewanish as you put it. Don't throw shade at other teams cause yours is circling the drain AGAIN
