RIDERS VERSUS ALS ALL ABOUT DURANT? TEAMS SAY NO

REGINA - The Roughriders held their final practice of the week on Tuesday morning and afterwards HC & GM Chris Jones announced WR Rob Bagg and KR Chad Owens will miss Thursday's season-opening game at Montreal.

There are online reports Owens has been placed on the 6-game Injured List.

Bagg was injured in a practice at Saskatoon's SMF Field after Preseason Game 1.

Also on Tuesday, the team released non-import receiver Joshua Stanford and import linebacker Myke Tavarres.

The Riders arrived in Montreal early-evening on Tuesday and will hold a walk-through Wednesday at 11:00 am at Concordia.

We'll be eager to attend the Alouettes' walk-through, also scheduled for 11:00 am ET, to get the pregame thoughts of Alouettes quarterback Darian Durant.

Frankly, the hype over this "Durant Versus The Roughriders" scenario isn't nearly to the level I expected when Saskatchewan shipped their franchise legend to Montreal on January 13.

In the days leading up to Thursday's season-opener, both sides have downplayed any bad blood.

“The hype and drama is from the outside. It’s the first game of the season," Durant told Herb Zurkowsk of the Montreal Gazette. "This is an opportunity to get out on the right track. It doesn’t matter who we play. We just want to win. There’s no extra motivation. This is a new regime. It’s a new beginning for myself and a lot of guys. We want to get this thing started right.”

CKRM football analyst Luc Mullinder says this game isn't "all about Durant facing the Riders" for the first time.

"No," Mullinder surmised Tuesday in Montreal. "When you look at the team aspect, and this Rider team in general, they look really good on paper. I think they're beginning to start their own journey and that doesn't include Darian Durant unfortunately.

"As much as people in Saskatchewan want to focus on Darian, you don't talk about him in the locker room. You talk about your special teams battles and the offensive threats that they have and their defensive capabilities.

"If you make it about one player, you're literally taking the focus off of 23 other guys. You don't want that. The Alouettes are lions lying in the grass right now and if you focus on only one lion, the other ones will come out and bite you."

We'll discuss Wednesday's happenings from Montreal on 620 CKRM's SportsCage at 4:00 pm.

With Bagg on the 1 game injured list and now with Stanford being released, does that mean the Riders going into Montreal with only 1 Canadian receiver on the roster ? If so are they looking at other teams castoffs to potentially fill a void ?

Owens will never see the playing field this year he is banged up and injury prone. Possibly time to call it quits.

So that leaves Van Gylswyk (only plays if Crapigna gets injured) & St. John from the 2016 draft. How bad is Stanford if Bagg is injured & Demski & Awache are the last men standing? Our National depth @ receiver is concerning.

Someone needs to give Bagger a Rider plaid shirt and an axe and go do some old spice commercials!

Beard makes him look completely different.

I see 3Down Nation has our beloved Riders in Spot #9 in their Power Rankings. Yikes!!

Scruffy, the riders don't have a q.b. 5 and 13 , unless bridge comes through

Saskatchewan Roughriders easily 12 - 6 team 2017.

Rod's uncle, Mr. Grumpy.

Wasn't Stanford the receiver that prevented an interception with his hustle? That was impressive.

Riders lose in mtl on thurs. Go 10-8 for season. Good for 4th in the west.

Riders look so good on paper that tsn has them picked to finish last in the cfl - which I agree with.

To me it's all about Darian winning and Jones losing.

7 wins max. I still don't understand why Durant isn't a Rider this year......

It is because Darian wanted $350-400 GUARANTEED money. The Riders are paying Glenn and Carter about the same, likely not guaranteed. Simple salary cap distribution. Why do you think Mtl. had to let Bear Woods go?!! Can't pay all your good players huge money!

You mean our team, the Riders losing. Some fan.

The 46 man game day roster is out and there are 11 rookies and 4 sophomores on the depth chart. Also, there are 4 2017 draft picks on the roster. Hopefully, the rookies can step up and perform as there is a fair amount of veteran presence, especially on the o-line. 3 Cdn starters listed on D and 5 Cdn starters on offence. Can't wait for kick-off and if the d-line can put some pressure on DD, then it should give the secondary some time to settle in. Limit the penalties and the turnovers and we should end up 1-0 after tomorrow evening! Enjoy the season!

I wonder if Durant will stay healthy until half time.

He wanted more money than Jones was willing to pay it's pretty simple and been explained numerous times. It's time to move on

All about dd for me. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if we got thumped 46 to 10

RE: "CKRM football analyst Luc Mullinder says this game isn't "all about Durant facing the Riders" for the first time."

WRONG!!!! THAT is what it is ALL about. I told Durant at CFL week that Jones was wrong about him and you will prove him wrong. THAT is what is going to happen.......Good Luck Doubles!!

DD isn't a Rider because he wanted more money than CJ was willing to spend on a player with injury issues and average play the last couple of years. (p.s. I'll let you in on a secret, DD quit on the Riders before the last game of the year in BC....and you want the HC/GM to just give in?)

Montreal paid DD what he wanted but it cost them an all-star receiver, an all-star o-lineman and the top defensive player in the East division.

Would you rather have DD or Dennis, Roosevelt and Jefferson?

Demski is being backed up by national receiver Denzel Radford. He beat out Stanford.

Riders win Thursday night.
Will be low scoring.
I doubt either team scores 20 points.
Riders will win because Montreal won't be able to keep the Riders front 7 off him.
6 sacks by the Riders and the win 19-15.
Jefferson and Tull game stars.
Carter takes two stupid 15 yard penalties and gets benched.

I agree with 2nd post Owens either misses year or see very little of him with injuries and playing time. I would like Riders to be 12-6 this year really would but realistically hoping for 9-9. Got to stay healthy this year.

Honestly the sooner this game is over the better. I want to see improvement from the BC game but I am not foolish enough to believe our team is so good that we can walk into someone else's stadium and dominate, not yet. July 1st I do expect the first win and will be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

Dear Dittmer,

He got traded.

It will be one exciting game...I'll be screaming at my TV...wish I was in Montreal for this one.

Give me a break then how does Calgary and Edmonton pay there qbs big money and still keep there star players

Anonymous said...

Jones low balled him and then publically insulted him - Dont ever forget that. Ill move on after Jones produces a better long term option at qb, not before.

Hear! Hear!

Your math is suspect.

Anonymous said...

So what you're saying is that it is your wish for your Riders to lose so DD can win?

So you must be a part time fan?

The team should always be before the individual. Just sayin'

Anonymous said...

Pretty obvious to me that they aren't a fan. Probably a stamps fan

People make this all about Durant vs the Riders and the naysayers all want Jones to be a fall guy here if we lose. Facts: Jones was hired to build long term sustainable success, not re-sign overpriced injury prone veterans. If you want Jones to fail at his very clear mandate - then you're not a fan of the club and maybe you're only a toadyaso bandwagon jumper. Basically, we have two less injury prone players in place of Durant. That's wise football.
