RIDERS ACQUIRE EDEM FROM LIONS

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired national safety Mike Edem and a conditional selection in the 2018 CFL Draft from the B.C. Lions. In exchange, the Riders sent a conditional 2018 pick to the Lions.

Edem (6’1 – 210) was originally selected by the Montreal Alouettes in the first round (3rd overall) of the 2013 CFL Draft. During his third season with the Als, Edem was acquired by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at the trade deadline in October, 2015. He went on to sign with B.C. as a free agent ahead of the 2016 season.

Through four CFL seasons, the 27-year-old University of Calgary product has registered 91 defensive tackles, 29 special-teams tackles, six interceptions and five quarterback sacks while starting 33 of 60 regular-season games. He’s also seen action in seven career playoff games.

He was named a 2013 East Division All-Star and receives nomination as the Alouettes’ Most Outstanding Rookie.

Like this move. We get a bonafide national player for a draft pick. With a draft pick it's a crapshoot at least this way we know we have a proven player

Riders do not have any thing. If he does not agree to redo his contract he will be released - say good by

Astute football move, having a highly respected football background as does Mr Chris Jones only bodes well for the organization and the on field product.

Goodby to what? Its conditional. If he doesn't come, there is no transaction.

But they also got a conditional draft pick in the trade so it's a very low risk move in this case.

Great move. Like it a lot.

I love what the Riders are doing, but don’t we have to many good players? We are going to have to cut some pretty good guys. At this point I see the 7 starting Canadians (screw this National term). 1. Safety should be Brouillette and Edem. 2. MLB Henoc Muamba and Cameron Judge. 3. Defensive Tackle - Eddie Steele, Ese Mrabure-Ajufo or Linden Gaydosh. Pick one. Will there be a spot for Makana Henry and Ivan Brown or our draft pick Emmanuel Adusei (or can he go back to Carleton). 4. Offensive Guard - Josiah St. John (he has some growth to do, but we need him here) 5. Center - Dan Clark 6. Offensive Guard - Dariusz Bladek (I am thinking Brendon LaBatte is on the downside but why not keep him protected on the 6-game injury list? Use him the way we did Geroy or Jason Clermont. They played their last year mainly on injury reserve and won us the most important games in those seasons. Hiding his big Salary on injury reserve will pay off latter). 7. Canadian Slot back – Rob Bagg. Can we hide all our Offensive Linemen on Injury Reserve or will they go back to school? I do not see a future for Jeff Hecht now that we have Edem. Jordan Reaves, Tevaughn Campbell, and Kevin Francis will have major compition on Defense to back-up. Can we keep all 3? Dillon Grondin, Alexandre Gagne, and Draftee Alexandre Chevrier. Will be hard to keep, maybe the draftee goes back to school? On offense we need to find a spot for developing back-ups - Dillon Guy, Matt Vonk and Ryan White I can only see 2 of these guys there at the end. Nic Demski should keep his position but what about Joshua Stanford and Mitchell Baines. There is not a lot of room left. Only one of Spencer Moore and Aaron Milton will fit unless maybe they go injury Reserve? Finally do we really need Kienan Lafrance and Gregg Moris, with our American Running Backs Daniel Thomas or Cam Marshall. (They probably cost less than Lafrance)……Going to Quinn Van Gylswyk will give us another spot but the two kickers we have do a pretty good job……….Those saying Jones has not brought anyone in; must be Edmonton Fans they know nothing about our team………Yes I am drinking Jones ‘Kool aide’. He has set us up pretty good!

Have any of you actually watched Edem play the last couple of seasons ?

Wonder why the Riders are his 4th team in 4 years? Hmmm?

Edem has been a bust... there's a reason every team has given up on him.

Too many good players - okay this is a joke right? Bladek is ready to take LaBatte's place? Eddie Steele is a BACKUP on the Eskimos, started all of 5 games, Mrabure-Ajufo was on the practice roster of BC & they chose not to play him to keep him, Gaydosh has been a bust, always injured, has TWO career tackles in 10 games - PICK ONE. The Eskimos just signed a guy by the name of Bowers - big DT. If you never heard of him, here's his story. He was slated all year to go #1 in the 2011 NFL draft, got injured & dropped to the 2nd round. He won the Bronco Nagurski Trophy for US college Defensive Player of the Year, unanimous 1st team All-American & so on & so on. So what do you think? Should the Eskimos dump Almondo Sewell. Hmm - Bowers or Sewell - you make the choice, pick one. It means nothing. Those same Eskimos just signed 22 players, the majority of whom were stars at some point somewhere. Same goes for most of the Rider hopefuls. I love your enthusiasm but we brought in a lot of players last year. Are they all busts & let's get some fresh blood on board? The more changes a club makes, the more time it takes to gel & the less success. That is why the Riders won the majority of their games in the last segment & were 1-10 out of the gate.

last anon comment insightful. agree. you cant build a cohesive team changing players every week. its all on VY. Kevin Glenn will get you 8 -10 wins and maybe a first round playoff loss at best.

Not a Joke. I believe Jones has done the best job he could have done. There is not a lot of all-star Canadians waiting in line to come here, so scouting has to cover some extra territory. Interesting 2 of our Offensive linemen did not play a down last year. Scouting is gambling these guys pan out and I hope they do. With respect to Dariusz Bladek/ Brendon LaBatte; I saw LaBatte leave the field last year never to return. I hope and pray the fellow has had a good level of recovery, but I think at this point we need to cover off him not playing. The idea I put forward use him like we did Geroy I think has some merit. If he is not worn out in games we can hide him as a back-up like we did Geroy. At some point we may need a special player to finish one or two games. With last year’s injury he could likely end up on Injury Reserve. At the end of the day we need 7 starting Canadians. If Guard is not one of those positions we need to play an American, at this point possibly Jarriel King, but who will fill the starting Canadian? Possibly Kienan Lafrance and Gregg Moris at running back or Spencer Moore and Aaron Milton at Fullback, but these guys have not really played in the starting 7 consistently. At this Point I see Dariusz Bladek with a lot of upside……Another week point in our future is Josiah St. John and maybe Ryan White should enter the conversation, hopefully one can surface as a starter……with respect to Ese Mrabure-Ajufo and Dillon Guy, yes they were acquired off B.C.’s practice roster, fortunately we had room on our roster for these 2 who were front runners in their draft class, but I remember John Murphy saying Rules are Rules and that is how we got these 2, but you are playing with Wally B here and he does not lose a lot. Just think Chris Jones list of CFL fines start after this point. I would bet Wally had some role in those actions….interesting Chris Jones keeps saying now Rules are Rules and Riders have to follow them. I am just a fan wearing green goggles. Sorry I cannot comment on Edmonton’s players. Frankly I do not care about anyone but the Riders. Thanks for your comments. You show good insight as a fan!

Fully agree that LaBatte's health is a question but starting Bladek is not the answer. He needs to develop. Let's put it this way - St John was drafted #1 & wasn't ready. Bladek was rated #10 & drafted #11. So is he ready? Jones says he's really a #1. Well 3 OL in the East were their team's nominees for Rookie of the Year & started on better OL's than the Riders & St John is sill not ready to start. So how did Jones pass these guys up for St John. A couple of writers said prior to the draft St John was overrated. Why? St John played his senior year in a top notch football program - so far so good. BUT he started the 1st 4 games, was benched & never started again. This was a red flag to the experts. Two teams drafted on OL before Jones got Bladek. Toronto grabbed Woods who actually was rated #1 at one point. If Bladek actually is the best OL in the draft you'll have to take Jones' word on this. The jury's still out on St John. The problem I have with Jones - only Gainey is left from our haul off the FA list last year. I'd be hard pressed to find much in the way of "talent" out of all those mini camps that have made a difference. Isn' t that what he was hired to do? What happened to all those veterans who want to play here because of Jones? What happened to all those "diamonds in the rough" who would fill in the other positions. I do see a lot of backups from other teams. He's been a major disappointment. Now this year we'll have 16 coaching positions, the same # as New England - hope Reynolds is getting good bang for his buck? You do know we had a$4M+ loss in 2015? Wonder what it will be for 2016?

So if St. John and Bladek are not starting Who do you think should start? Also who do you think will be the starting 7? You are painting a picture of Gloom and Doom and not putting forward any possible solutions. Our opening 1-10 2016 record was created by the loss of LaBatte and Best and Dan Clarke to a lesser extent. These are 3 All-stars or almost All-stars. They were replaced by the rookie St-John, the back-up Vonk, and the aging Andrew Jones (also primarily a back-up). Many Games had Americans inserted into the chemistry which upset the Starting 7. After game 11 we went 4-3 and Jones systems started giving some better results. Always keep in mind we live in a Salary Cap world and the split of Canadians and Americans has to be considered in Any situation.

I would agree that last year’s Free Agents did not give the results we wanted, but have you considered why? If you are putting this all on Jones as a failure, You better put his success on him as well. We signed two Defensive End’s One Canadian one an American. Both were all-stars the year before. His Scouting and Free Agent Camps developed 3 brand new ends that out shone these high priced Free agents ( Jonathan Newsome, A.C. Leonard – an Offensive Receiver who would have guessed could develop, and Willie Jefferson-another FA). I guess Newsome and Jefferson are FA’s you are not considering here as well. Non the less I expect the costs of these 3 were less than the 2 we had started with. Also remember Cappicotti gave us 2 draft picks back so the true comparison need to be evaluated down the road.

Bladek was pretty well projected as the best Offensive Lineman on all Draft Boards. Because Masson Good was selected ahead of him means nothing. Everything the coaches are saying is that Bladek was competing against NFL caliber Defensive Linemen. I would agree that he has to step up if he is going to start from the beginning. I sure hope LaBatte can work out for us. I also hope St. John has grown enough……that’s what Training Camp is for to evaluate this……..the projection on Eddie Meredith sounds pretty good, so anything is possible…..remember Rob Bagg came out of Queens undrafted and was felt to be a starter. I would not put that on Eddie, but as much as you talk negatively the opposite is entirely possible. Remember the FA for last year are the same as this years…..they have to make the team and if the Camps down south brought a better player the ones we signed may be trade fodder as well. My original message showed Kienan Lafrance and Aaron Milton are possibly on the bubble. I wonder if Bakari Grant and even Duron Carter could also be on the bubble. All 4 have been given big contracts but will we be under the salary cap with all players? I am still drinking the ‘Kool-aid’ and I see things green…..maybe you should give it a try.
