VIGR RECAP: PATS OFF TO EASTERN CONF FINAL

Keith Hershmiller Photography
REGINA - For the first time since 1993, the Regina Pats are headed to the WHL's Eastern Conference Final.

The Queen City Kids finished off the Swift Current Broncos with an emphatic 5-1 victory in Game 7 of their second round playoff series before 6484 in the Brandt Centre Monday night.

It was the Pats' 20th sellout of the season, and the fans witnessed a remarkable comeback from a 3-1 series deficit.

And Regina wasn't to be denied in this one. Sam Steel opened the scoring 2:19 into the game and teammate Filip Ahl made it 2-0 at the 4:57 mark. This was all before Swift Current had registered a shot on goal.

Steel buried again in the second period while Austin Wagner chipped in with his 9th of the postseason for a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

KHP
The Broncos broke Tyler Brown's shutout bid at 14:33 of the third - on the powerplay and with their goalie pulled - to make it 4-1 however just over a minute later Austin Wagner won a race to the puck and slammed home a shorthanded empty-netter with 4:24 to go.

Game over: Pats 5 Broncos 1

The Pats outshot the Broncos 43-24 while going 0/5 on the powerplay and 5/6 on the penalty kill.

"We took it in small pieces," Sam Steel said postgame of battling back from being down 3-1 in games. "One period at a time. We did a great job and showed a lot of character.

"I'm proud of the guys."

It was the first Game 7 the Pats have hosted in 45 years and the first-ever in the Brandt Centre/Agridome.

The Pats now await their opponent in Round 3. The other Eastern Semifinal is going to Game 7 Tuesday in Medicine Hat as the Tigers host the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Wow......the Brandt Centre is the place to be for the coming weeks in Regina! Kudos to the team for one heck of a game. All of you people complaining about goaltending or deadlines moves......jump on the WAGON. It will continue to be one heck of a ride.

What an awesome game by the Pats. Tyler Brown was amazing once again. Can't wait for round 3 to begin. GO PATS GO!

This was a great game played by the Pats tonight. They actually took control in the 2nd period of game 6 being down 3-1 in the game on the road and 3-2 in the series, they turned the tables in that game and this series which seemed to be tilted up until then in the Broncos favour.
The Broncos played one Heck of a series and battled the Pats hard up till that point in the 2nd period and then I think the saves Brown made when it was 3-1 took something out of them and possibly they may have ran out of gas. They had played a great series against Moose Jaw that went to game 7 and then they forced the Pats to the brink. The Broncos and their fans can be extremely proud of their team for one heck of a playoff run. Tonight, however the Broncos didn't look to have anything left and the Pats were not going to be denied and didn't give the Broncos any opportunity this evening.
I think the Pats learned in this series some valuable lessons and they learned how to overcome some huge obstacles and they did so with flying colours. The Pats were tested and battled hard in this series and overcame the adversity. I believe in the next series they will not want to have to overcome the obstacles they had to overcome in this series.
Great Victory tonight Pats and in this series Pats GO PATS GO starting Friday night. Keep riding the momentum you will have at the Brandt Centre and the entire city...

WOW IT LOOKED LIKE 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT TEAMS OUT THERE, COMPARED TO THE LAST COUPLE SEESAW GAMES. NICELY DONE.

Well that was sweet! Great jump right from the drop of the puck and never looked back. Hats off to Tyler Brown - the MVP of this series for sure.

Pats have now won 19 of their last 22 games and have not lost in regulation over that period (last 11 reg. season and now 11 playoff games). They are still a Team to be reckoned with even without Captain Brooks...ya think?

Broncos looked a little ragged tonight but have had 14 tough games so nothing to be ashamed of that is for sure. If the next series is as entertaining as this one who knows what the scalpers will get for a game ticket :))

Get some rest Boys...and Fans...going to need it against... I am thinking the Tigers.

Go Pats Go!

Now that was the Pats we have seen through out the year. Came out flying and said early this was our game. Kudos to Swift for a tough battle but in the end the Pats were still too much. Came back from a 3-1 deficit not only in game 6 but in the series. Way to go. Let's ride this momentum for two more series. And the atmosphere was AWESOME!!! That energy in the Brandt Centre was had to help this team too.

I'm so happy brendan mcguire turned me into a pat fan, without him on the cage i might have missed the entire thing.

Where are the twin•• who said they were done? Paddock should've got a big game goalie.

The Pats hitched their Wagon to Brown (for better or worse). Papirny was available, honest to God I think some teams fear making a trade with Brandon. Regina snickered when the Broncos traded for a goalie and laughed when Moose jaw lost but they aren't laughing nearly as much now.

Wanna put your name to it now goof?

'We aren't even going to have to worry about playing the Broncos since they are going to get crushed by Moose Jaw; the Pats are going to sweep the Broncos just like 2 years ago; now the Pats are going to beat the Broncos in 5; now they are going to beat the Broncos in six; the Broncos aren't going to win another game in this series; its men against boys out there'. I can hardly wait to see what predictions Pats fans have for us after this one; although they are kind of running out of possibilities at this point.

Ya we ll win in 7 Andy

If the Pats players don't make $ playing hockey, they all should be able to have lucrative careers as choke artists. They have experience doing that type of work here in Regina over the years. Not sure what that type of work pays? But, I am sure it will be much more than what some of these players will make on the ice.
This series also definitely shows and provides many reasons why Paddock isn't in the NHL any longer. The reasons are glaring, he can't coach his players to play under pressure, he also put all his hopes in a goaltender that does not play well under pressure, and he also believes and thinks what a team does in the regular season means more than what a team does in the playoffs. Ummm just an FYI Paddock regular season victories don't mean Jack and teams aren't remembered for their regular season victories or how many records or banners you can hang from the roof. Teams are measured on performance in the playoffs. When the Pats lose at home on Friday night. It will be fun for fans over the years to reminisce with others over the years to sit around the water cooler telling stories "Hay do you remember the 16/17, Regina Pats who had the most points in the league and were the #1 team in Canada." Because when they are asked "Wow what a season, but how did they do in the playoffs"? Which will definitely be asked they will be able to respond "Well after a regular season in which they won the Scotty Munroe trophy for the most points, they actually choked and lost in 5 games to the Swift Current Broncos in the 2nd round." Wow won't that be fun and entertaining for people, but it's like a broken record in Regina where this team chokes yet again.
Brooks and Ahl not in the lineup are just excuses for why the the Pats aren't winning. The real reason the Pats aren't winning is because this team lacks goaltending that can handle pressure, they also don't play with heart, grit, and desperate hockey. They relied last night on one player to score all the goals. Goaltending has been good, but not great and was definitely subpar in game 3 on the OT goal. Then in game four, the third goal which Swift Current scored to tie the game was weak beyond weak for a CHL goaltender.
Nope this team will be remembered for an amazing regular season, and it's too bad championships aren't handed out for regular season points. But the biggest thing the 16/17 Regina Pats will be remembered for is the way the Choked in the playoffs...

The only ones cheering for the Pats are those that live in Regina. Arrogant and cocky...team...fans
..media. We remember what was said and how the pats mocked other teams when they beat them. Cheering for the Rockets all the way now.

So proud to be a Pats fan!! I knew they could pull this off! Just when I think the Brandt couldn't get any louder! Just wait until round 3!

Hats off to the Broncos for a great series and playoff run.

GO PATS!!!

Nice win boys! A tough test lies ahead no matter who wins out of Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, Lethbridge is more a top 6 team while Medicine Hat is the deeper team both will be as challenging if not more so than Swifty, so buckle up everyone it's going to be a fun Eastern Final regardless of tonight's outcome!

I'm surprised Raider fan is still paying attention to the Dub after his team was eliminated from playoff contention in January! :o Go cry somewhere else ya sore loser!

Lots of Pats haters eating crow today! Hope it tastes good boys!! I hear it gets tougher to swallow the further into the playoffs the Pats make it!! Better grease up your throats for the Eastern Finals because the Pats are in this for the long haul! Wooooo Go Pats Go!!!

Nice to see two Sask teams play great calibre hockey. Swift Current can be proud of their season. Great motivational coaching on their part. We should thank them for making the Pats step up their game. They will need to bring everything every game for the next series.

Man what garbage have you been reading Raiders Fan? I read the articles as well as these Posts all the time. I read far more slamming from Swift Current fans after going up 3-1 then what your talking about.

Papirny is a very good goalie, but not great when he needs to be great. With all of the talent in front of him last year, he had a chance to prove it in the Memorial Cup, but didn't. He will have his name in the WHL record books but may never be a pro.

Great team effort and atmosphere last night. I don't expect we'll hear from the goal tending experts and Reggie Dunlop and his we need more grit comments. Thanks to the Bronco's for a hard fought series. Your efforts have made the Pat's a better playoff team.

What a game it was last night! Pats dominated once again! Nice try swift current! Maybe next year!

WTF are you smoking?? You realize the Pats WON last night, right? Total domination and off to Round 3. How the hell are they choking?? Wake up dummy!

I don't understand why fans of the Broncos, Warriors, Blades & Raiders come on to a basically Regina site and rip the Pats and their fan base. Just slink off boys & girls, STFU, and hopefully your team will be good enough to take a run next year and join the Pats in the 2018 Memorial Cup.

I'm hearing we lost Davidson for the rest of the playoffs, Rod can you confirm?

Raider Fan-Oakland or PA? Guess it doesn't matter, lot's of losing either way.

Try a Saskatchewan site nimrod...another guy that thinks that the world revolves around Regina. What goes around comes around..
Can't wait till next year.

The Tigers are deeper then the top 6 Hurricanes and should be tougher then Swift...I would hope so seeing they were second to the Pats and in the top 10 of the CHL.

I AM FEELING A BIT CONFLICTED HERE... WHILE BROWN DEFINITELY MADE SOME GREAT SAVES IN GAMES 6 AND 7, THAT WERE KEY TO KEEPING THE PATS IN IT... THEY STILL GAVE UP 3 GAMES AFTER HE LET IN SOME SOFTIES EARLIER.

I CHOOSE TO BE OPTIMISTIC, AND HOPE THAT HE WILL STAY ON A ROLL.

It must revolve around Regina, your on it all the time Raider fan. They just keep winning folks! Too bad the narrow minded, small time towns attitude keeps showing up when it is anything to do with Regina. How about getting behind the Pats, a "Saskatchewan" team and cheering them on....nimrod. Yeah, next year.

Raider Fan is full of all sorts of nasty feelings, if you come to Regina I'll give you a hug bud!

I see some loser on usedregina has 48 tickets between the two games that he is selling at $100 a pop. Is ticket scalping legal? I know there is a rule about selling within 48 hours after tickets have went on sale to general public. Who would you report the guy to.

You realize this post was reposted today and was initially posted on April 12th right? Not to stick up for the post, but at that time it didn't look good after the Pats were down 3 to 1 after beating beaten in overtime for the 2nd time in consecutive evenings and 3 times in the series. Nobody would be talking about a team choking after a win in game 7. Maybe read the dates of the post before responding and Wake up dummy...

Anonymous said...

It's simple, do NOT pay over face value for any tickets (watch it on tv) and make the scalpers loser their shirts.

The true fans have their tickets bud, we are called "Season ticket Holders". Go Pats!

Congratulations Regina. I posted here previously that if the Pats could dig deep down and climb back, it would the type of adversity which was overcome that should propel them to the WHL Final and possibly the Memorial Cup. "It ain't over until it is over". Recognition to Swift Current too as they played so very well. And to "LF", who posted above about Papirny, sorry, but I disagree. He was the MVP of the series. Without hi., Speedy Creek would not have come this close to eliminating Regina or beating the Jaw. Brown played very well, but to me, it was like A- to Brown and an A to Papirny. He was also very gold last year for Brandon. He was not the reason the Wheat Kings imploded once they got to the Memorial Cup. He may not play pro, but he had a stellar WHL career. Period. Good luck against Lethbridge (the Hat had a number of smallish quick players, and I thought were actually a better team than Lethnridge, but one never knows at this time of year, and the Hurricanes made up a lot of ground in the standings over the last half of the regular season, relying on their goalie as well).
