VIGR RECAP: BRONCOS 5 PATS 4, 3OT (BRONCOS LEAD 3-1)

For the first time this season, the Regina Pats are facing elimination.

Glen Gawdin's powerplay goal at 9:54 of the third overtime was the winner Tuesday evening as the Swift Current Broncos outlasted the Pats 5-4 at the Innovation Credit Union I-Plex.

With the victory, the Broncos now have a commanding 3-1 series lead in this WHL Eastern Conference Semifinal.

Trying to tie the series up 2-2, the Pats came out flying Tuesday evening and assumed a 2-0 lead in the first period on a pair of goals by overage forward Dawson Leedahl. The Pats outshot the Broncos 15-6 in the opening stanza.

However the Broncos slugged back in the middle period, netting goals from Ryley Lindgren and Artyom Minulin to tie it up. The Broncos outshot the Pats 19-8 in the middle frame, and it was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.

A wild third period ensued, as Leedahl notched the hattrick goal 4:12 in to give his club a 3-2 advantage.  Swift Current responded with a pair of goals - from Tyler Steenbergen and Lindgren - to put the Broncos back up on top with less than three minutes to go.

Leedahl continued his heroic evening and tied the game at 4-4 with his fourth of the night with just 21 seconds to go in regulation.

Two overtime periods solved nothing and although the Pats were able to kill off a penalty in the first OT, the weary crew could not kill off another midway through the third OT and that's when Gawdin ended it with his fourth of the postseason.

Game over: Broncos 5 Pats 4

The shots ended tied 69-69 as Regina went 1/3 on the powerplay and 2/3 killing penalties.

Regina was again playing without injured forwards Adam Brooks and Filip Ahl who went down in Game 2 and have yet to return to the series.

Tyler Brown took the loss in the Pats goal making 64 saves while Jordan Papirny collected the win with a 65-save outing. Papirny is now 11-1 in career WHL overtime playoff games.

The Pats will try to avoid elimination when they host the Broncos in Game 5 Friday evening in the Brandt Centre.  Faceoff is 7:00 on 620 CKRM, Access 7 and Shaw.

'We aren't even going to have to worry about playing the Broncos since they are going to get crushed by Moose Jaw; the Pats are going to sweep the Broncos just like 2 years ago; now the Pats are going to beat the Broncos in 5; now they are going to beat the Broncos in six; the Broncos aren't going to win another game in this series; its men against boys out there'. I can hardly wait to see what predictions Pats fans have for us after this one; although they are kind of running out of possibilities at this point.

Sellout on Friday? NOT, but on the other hand if it is sold out there will be a lot of Swift Current Fans there . It just shows you as I pointed out at the beginning of the series, playoffs are so much different than regular season games are and it does not matter at all how great your record is, what matters is who is the hungriest in the playoffs and of course the team with the best goalie wins. Right now it is Swift Current and it will be a huge Mountain to climb now for the Pats to come back.

Oh,Oh. The Pats better roll up their sleeves and get to work. A little too much bragging during the year

Brown 64 saves Papirney 65, fantastic! Please don't blame the goalie for what sounded like an epic battle.

Wow! 7:30 am and not a posting on here yet? I guess the Pats fans couldn't sleep last night after losing to Swift Current and now are facing elimination on Friday in their own barn. Swift is simply outplaying them when they need to and the best goalie in the series is leading the way. Regina now has to win 3 in a row and I don't think it will happen. It just shows you that standings don't really mean much. Go Broncos Go !

Wow! ... another doozy in Speedy Creek. What unfortunate timing on Hobbs' broken stick, in a pass no less!
Well it is going to be funtie in Regina Friday and it's do or die for us Pats fans. Can we solve the Papirny magic? :))
Hats off to both tenders as they have been the stars of this series, although Dawson is a close 2nd with that performance last night.
Some soft defensive players caused most of the hurt last night so got to pick that up Friday or she's all over.
Go Pats Go!

Wow, what a heartbreaker.

So many people will be on here today saying the Pats are done. I refuse to believe that! It's not the same team without their captain and more players need to pull up their socks but I KNOW they will win Friday night and then look out!

C'mon boys, help Leedahl out a little bit out there!

GO PATS!! You can do this!!

If the great Rita MacNeil was still with us, she'd be warming up her vocal cords right now.

I never thought the Broncos could score that many goals.

I think the loss of Brooks, Ahl and Lechyshyn is absolutely crippling the Pats.

It's not over yet. One game at a time.

Papirny has been better than Brown. Soft goals once again. This is an embarrassment for the Pats. It's not that they lost in OT; the game should have never got to OT. Gave up two leads. Soft defensive plays and weak goals against. Three games in OT where they let them back from a lead. Paddock never had them pay any attention to defence all year so why now? The Broncos aren't much of a team but the Pats are playing down to their level and below. Paddock has kids playing in spots they shouldn't have to be in. He didn't obtain enough veteran forward depth or sent too many away in trades. Now they have a player like Brooks out (Cheap Shot) and nothing to plug in. It was Paddock's responsibility to have more forward depth, but he failed the team, fans and organization. The fat lady is warming up her vocal chords. She's all over but the crying.

Stay in Vegas Roddy, no need to come back to see the crying first hand.

Swift deserves to be where they are as do the pats. I sure do think the series would be a lot different if Zablocki, Woods, Smith and Cole were in that lineup.

One game at a time. If Lethbridge can come back from a 3-1 deficit, so can the Pats.

SURPRISED THAT THE FOLKS DUMPING ON BROWN ALL YEAR HAVEN'T BEEN GETTING MORE AGGRESSIVE AFTER THE SOFTIES. HOPING THE PATS CAN PULL UP THEIR SOCKS A BIT HERE. EXCITING OT. LOTS OF GREAT CHANCES AND UGLY CHANCES BOTH WAYS.

NOW TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO WIN TICKETS BY FRIDAY!

It's been a close series aside from game 2, so really the Pats could have just as easily swept the Broncos already. This is far from over, Pats are missing 3 of their best players in Leschychyn, Brooks and Ahl. I'm going to guess that we see Brooks and Ahl back for Game 5 and we'll see a very different Pats team on Friday night. Swifty has played well but their 3 wins have all been squeakers and you know the Pats will be hungry the rest of the way. Pats in 7

Didn't Brooks and Ahl play in Game 1 which Broncos also won? Might not make that much difference if they come back for game 5

Anonymous said...

pats will put up big fight the rest of the way!

Anonymous said...

Ahl has the mumps, Brooks was taken to hospital immediately upon injury. suspected high ankle sprain similar to Steel when he was a rookie.

Anonymous said...

isn't brooks going to be back for game 5?

Anonymous said...

No forward depth?! Are you kidding me? Barring all injuries, the Pats have a third -line that most teams would be envious of to have as a first line. Brooks, Lesychyn and Ahl would be first line players on most WHL teams. So to say they have no depth is a joke.

Anonymous said...

Fine line between losing and winning in this series. Give credit to the Broncos for playing a winning style and frustrating the Pats. But the Pats are not getting it done in the clutch however. Obviously need to get it done in 60 mins and not in OT.

Someone has to step up (other than Leedahl) and make a key play. Missing sandpaper and grit which is unfortunately what we did trade away. And hard to complain about the goaltending as it has been very good, but still a soft goal last night and the night before, while Papirny isn't letting those in. And stay out of the penalty box with dumb penalties.

We will now see if this team has the guts to dig deep and overcome and answer the critics. I certainly hope so. Let's go boys.

Just too thin at forward we went into playoffs with 11 forwards meaning we would be in tight if we lost 1 forward let alone two top 6 forwards. That being said it could definitely still be 2-2 or 3-1 for the pats . Hockey is a game of inches. We had two posts in game 1 and 4 in overtime. It's really disappointing to lose a guy like Brooks who I'm sure would have made the difference. We are just a one line team right now. I'm not counting us out. A team that wins 3 overtime games definitely does it with a little luck. Win game 5 put the pressure on them to win at home on Saturday. Game 7 all bets are off. Get to the rink Friday make a road trip to swift current Saturday to give the boys a lift.

What people are forgetting here is how well Swift is adapting to the Pats play, and getting pucks to the net, and just downright playing hard. Give them a TON of credit here. Although the 2nd OT was the sloppiest I have seen them play (and rightfully so...they faced a barrage of pressure in the 5th period of the night) the Pats just simply couldn't solve Papirny (who is starting to tick me off like Holtby did with Saskatoon..in a good way though..this kid is killing it!!)

Pats are far from done, but for Pats fans, get behind these guys! It's not over yet, play them one game at a time.

Too bad that Swift Current did not have a 10,000 seat facility as the place would be packed for a game 6 (if there is to be one). The fans who did get tickets to the two games witnessed something very special.

If the Pats players don't make $ playing hockey, they all should be able to have lucrative careers as choke artists. They have experience doing that type of work here in Regina over the years. Not sure what that type of work pays? But, I am sure it will be much more than what some of these players will make on the ice.
This series also definitely shows and provides many reasons why Paddock isn't in the NHL any longer. The reasons are glaring, he can't coach his players to play under pressure, he also put all his hopes in a goaltender that does not play well under pressure, and he also believes and thinks what a team does in the regular season means more than what a team does in the playoffs. Ummm just an FYI Paddock regular season victories don't mean Jack and teams aren't remembered for their regular season victories or how many records or banners you can hang from the roof. Teams are measured on performance in the playoffs. When the Pats lose at home on Friday night. It will be fun for fans over the years to reminisce with others over the years to sit around the water cooler telling stories "Hay do you remember the 16/17, Regina Pats who had the most points in the league and were the #1 team in Canada." Because when they are asked "Wow what a season, but how did they do in the playoffs"? Which will definitely be asked they will be able to respond "Well after a regular season in which they won the Scotty Munroe trophy for the most points, they actually choked and lost in 5 games to the Swift Current Broncos in the 2nd round." Wow won't that be fun and entertaining for people, but it's like a broken record in Regina where this team chokes yet again.
Brooks and Ahl not in the lineup are just excuses for why the the Pats aren't winning. The real reason the Pats aren't winning is because this team lacks goaltending that can handle pressure, they also don't play with heart, grit, and desperate hockey. They relied last night on one player to score all the goals. Goaltending has been good, but not great and was definitely subpar in game 3 on the OT goal. Then in game four, the third goal which Swift Current scored to tie the game was weak beyond weak for a CHL goaltender.
Nope this team will be remembered for an amazing regular season, and it's too bad championships aren't handed out for regular season points. But the biggest thing the 16/17 Regina Pats will be remembered for is the way the Choked in the playoffs...

Anyone who thinks these loses are browns fault don't know anything about hockey. He has stood on his head and has let in 2 weak goals in 8 games played. Some of the saves he made last nite in ot were sick. One game at a time now boys we can still force game 7 and then let the chips fall were they may.

Anonymous said...

They're not out of the playoffs yet so you can't say they choked. I wonder how many Hurricanes fans were talking about the team choking when they were down 3 - 1. Or Flin Flon against Nipawin in the SJHL. Now look at them. One game at a time they prevailed and I believe the Pats will too. If they are a championship caliber team, they'll figure this out. If not, it'll be disappointing yes, but this fan has still enjoyed the ride of this season and will continue to support!

GO PATS!

Tyler Brown is #1 in GAA in the playoffs.

You internet losers pulling drive by's here pretending to know things and drop told ya so"s can take a hike and get a hobby. Cheer for your team and leave the rest alone.

Remember that these are just KIDS. They are people's children. As a fan of the Pats, but also the league and game I find the bulk of the comments on the blog very embarrassing. I wish Rod would clamp down on the comments and limit it to anything thoughtful, but folks who actually read the column they are commenting on.

All the favourites appear to be in trouble at the mid-point of this round. Hopefully the Pats can pull this together. Brooks and Ahl back on Friday would sure help if that's going to be the case.

Pretty much all over but the whining!

Hey Pats, it's next year that you get a Free pass to the Memorial Cup! Get playing!!

Congratulations Swift current! As a long time Regina Pats season ticket holder, you should be proud supporting a team with such a small population and arena. Great support and a very young team built for next year in Swift, overachieving right now.

More like out working/hustling the pats, 1 or 2 players going down on a proclaimed "powerhouse" shouldn't be reason for a 2nd round exit.

The above post is spot on; these are not pros, and many of the players are still teenagers. Yet, they are playing, and we are not, so cut them a bit of slack. Yes, it is entertainment, and we pay for tickets and merchandise, but please keep in mind the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west, and this is not life and each stuff like the poor souls in places like Syria have to endure. So, being #1 in the WHL and CHL this year, I am not prepared to rule out Pats just yet, as they could climb back into the series. However, you can have all the regular season stats and the roster on paper, but it takes character, breaks, hitting your stride at playoff time and avoiding big key injuries to go all the way. If you are just a bit off, run into a hot goalie and suffer some setbacks to good players or leaders such as Brooks, the captain, it isn't actually not that surprising that Swifty has been able to squeak by with three wins. Brown has been very good. Even if Paper my has been better, the goaltending has not been an issue for Regina as much as the lack of a killer instinct and will to win. When they were in Brandon this year, they were enjoyable to watch with the skill and speed but I never got the feeling they would take control and win without question. Close but not close enough could be there mantra this year.

Nah this team will be remembered for coming back down from 3-1. If they don't I'll remember them as the best regular season team of my lifetime. Doubtful I'll even remember who beat them.

Anonymous said...

The Pats hitched their Wagon to Brown (for better or worse). Papirny was available, honest to God I think some teams fear making a trade with Brandon. Regina snickered when the Broncos traded for a goalie and laughed when Moose jaw lost but they aren't laughing nearly as much now.

Pats good regular season team, average at best in the playoffs, all sizzle little steak out in 5

bdunc said...

Lets be real about the situation the Pats are in...some people are calling it nothing but excuses, but lets look at the facts. The Pats are missing a total of 210 points from their regular season line up. 130 from Brooks, 48 from Ahl and 40 from Leschyshyn. That is one whole line that would have made a huge difference in these overtime games. Their fill in players have shown the Pats do have depth by taking a pretty good Swift team to 3 OT"s. Take those stats out of any team and the result will be pretty similar. Swift have played pretty darn good and came in with a solid game plan and have stuck to it, so hats off to them, but lets be real..head to head with 2 healthy teams and its a different series, and that's a fact!

Anonymous said...

bdunc spoken like a true rider fan. if we had this guy and this guy it would be way different. if my aunt had a d*ck she would be my uncle. someone said brown let in 2 weak goals out of 8. 25% are weak goals? and that's ok? papirny is a stud. regina has never gone out and gotten a legit #1. they will lose steel to NHL next year and what is left for a mem cup host? oh oh patsies will look worse than the blades did.
