REGINA - It is now a reasonable debate: Are the 2016-17 Regina Pats the greatest team in franchise history?

The Pats set a franchise record for wins (50) on Wednesday evening with a 6-2 rout of the Swift Current Broncos before 5366 fans in the Brandt Centre. The previous mark of 49 wins was set during the 1980-81 season.

One night after clinching the WHL's regular season pennant, the Pats came out guns a'blazing against the Broncos, with captain Adam Brooks netting his 40th goal of the season just 54 seconds into the contest.

Dawson Leedahl and Sergey Zborovskiy beat Bronco goalie Taz Burman before the period was out for a 3-0 Pats lead after 20 minutes.

Swift Current's Lane Pederson got the visitors on the board early in the second, however the Pats responded with goals from Nick Henry and Connor Hobbs for a commanding 5-1 lead going into the third.

In the final frame the clubs traded goals with Regina's Filip Ahl and Swift Current's Riley Lindgren lighting the lamp.

Game over: Pats 6 Broncos 2

Regina outshot Swift Current 41-26 while going 1/6 on the powerplay and 2/4 killing penalties.

Jordan Hollett got the win in the Pats goal making 24 saves while the Broncos' Burman took the loss with 35 stops.

The Pats (50-12-7-1) look for a seventh consecutive victory Friday night when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Access 7 and 620 CKRM. The St. Patrick's Day clash is already soldout.

As for the debate on who's the best Pats team ever, it will take Regina capturing the 2017 Memorial Cup to get our answer. Until then, that honour has to go to the 1974 Regina Pats.

You've got it right Roddy!

I had the pleasure of watching the 1974 team as well as the 1980 team. Both outstanding teams however I think the 1980 team may have been a smidge better than the 1974 team but end result was that 1974 team has rings and the 1980 team does not.

2017 is a very strong team but the post-season will determine exactly how they'll be remembered. Regular season is the regular season. You need to finish it in the spring if you're going to go down in history and I sure hope they do! Championship rings last forever. Regular season pennants are soon forgotten.

Congratulations to the Queen City Kids on this exceptional accomplishment. It seems like they are hitting their stride again right before playoffs. Sold out crowds for the rest of the season, should make things exciting in the Brandt. Most likely Calgary in the first round of playoffs, should be good. GO PATS GO!

Congratulations all around to the Pats Organization!!!

Last night a total team and 60 minute effort and agree with Roddy in that we while have some "stars" with Steel, Brooks, Hobbs, the Pats have a lot of other players that have come into their own this year on this Team, and are exciting to watch. The good thing is that a lot of them will be here next year too.

I heard that over 3100 Playoff tickets have been purchased so far. While I am hoping there will be many home sellouts during the playoffs I don't believe that will happen. Hard to sellout week night games, playoff tickets are higher priced, and just don't see some of the non-season ticket holder fans putting out the extra dollars every game. Couple that with the possibility that all Pats playoff games will be telecast on Access Communications so some will find it more conveniant to watch from their couch (like I do for Rider home games).

Regardless of a Playoff attendance this has been a super exciting year to be a Pats fan and look forward to many more under this Ownership Group. Playoffs are a new season so how much of a run the Pats have is anyones guess but I will be with them for the journey.

Go Pats Go!

All games will be sold out the city is a buzz. My vote for the best pats team is the 83-84 team with the rat leading the way.
