RODSERVATIONS

Remember When?
QUICK HITS

1 - It's still the most oft-asked question here in Riderland: What are the Riders going to do for a quarterback this season? Starting behind centre in Week 1 could be any one of Kevin Glenn, Brandon Bridge, Jake Waters, G.J. Kinne or Bryan Bennett. Or, it could be someone else entirely if Chris Jones and Co. have someone else up their sleeve.

But rest assured about one thing: the Saskatchewan Roughriders won't go into the season unprepared or under-qualified at the most important position on the field.

Jones and Murphy's jobs - and perhaps just as important, their reputations - depend on it. They don't want to fail any more than you do.

2 - Somone texted into the SportsCage on Wednesday and said the solution is clear: Just wait until 2018 when James Franklin is available as a free agent.

Ya right! That sounds great on March 1, but Rider fans aren't going to be satisfied with throwing away a season "just because".

3 - These Rider fan worries about the QB spot would fall under the category of "anxiety". By definition, "a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome."

Doesn't that sum up Rider Nation in a nutshell?

We also suffer from abandonment issues, and I blame Kent Austin and Henry Burris for that.

3 - Just spitballing here ... but what about a Drew Willy-to-Saskatchewan trade scenario? In perhaps record time, Drew Willy was relegated to the bench on February 28 by new Argos Head Coach Marc Trestman. Does Drew still have starting QB qualities? The Roughriders, Blue Bombers and former Argo GM Jim Barker all thought so at one time. Do you? Would Chris Jones? Perhaps it's a road to examine.

4 - Meanwhile ... in Austin, TX ... Vince Young is telling people he will be quarterbacking the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2017. That's what my football sources in Texas - close to Vince Young - told me this week. This story is real, but don't scoff. Refer to Point 1, Paragraph 3.

5 - It's absolutely WONDERFUL to be a student again! I totally love it. When I receive my diploma, you'll be the first to know. These are great times for the MMG.

6 - What a sheer honour it was to attend the Celebration of Life for Gordon Currie at Conexus Art Centre on Wednesday. I got to sit with a bunch of Saskatchewan legends including Norm and Kathy Fong, Dale West, Mal Isaac, Tom Shepherd and Doug Alexander. How fantastic! I learned a lot too.

Legendary CKCK and CBC broadcaster Mal Isaac said every time we do the SportsCage at the Brandt Centre, the Pats lose.

7 - The Regina Pats are in a swoon but it's understandable and explainable. They are coming off a ridiculously gruelling stretch and are convalescing in the middle part of this week before hosting the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday (you can watch on Access and Shaw at 7:00 pm Sask Time).

The Pats should be fine but make no mistake; they are NOT the same team as the one before Christmas that was pulverizing opponents like King Kong and destroying everything in their path. Gone are Rykr Cole, Riley Woods, Luc Smith and Lane Zablocki and they seemed to be major components of the team just a few months ago.

But, we've got to trust John Paddock because he hasn't misstepped yet. Don't fall victim to Point 2.

9 - Join Tiger Williams, Miss Universe Canada Siera Bearchell and me on April 1 in Assiniboia for the fundraiser for the New Arena Project. Tickets are $100 and available at Nelson GM in Assiniboia. I promise you it'll be worth the drive!

10 - When the dust settled after Wednesday's NHL Trade Deadline, what did we learn? The pundits are saying the Washington Capitals emerged as the #1 Cup contender after acquiring defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk. But will YOU be betting on them in your Stanley Cup playoff pool? I'm still weary of a team who's led by Alexander Ovechkin. I'm liking LA.

THAT'S IT! HAVE A GREAT DAY

No to Willey and not sure about Vince Young. Why not wait and see how the QB's we have preform at least in training camp and exhibition games then panic instead of now?
If one looks at the backgrounds and success of these no-names we have, you will notice they pretty much all have had very successful college careers. Any of them could be better then Franklin who for some reason seems to be our saviour in most Fans minds. Glenn can play especially if he has an O-line to compliment some pretty good looking receivers.
I am not ready to write-off any of the QB's nor the 2017 Riders (yet)

I believe Kevin Glenn is the Riders 2017 starter. He has a good arm and can sling the ball out there. 2 years in a row in Calgary when Glen had a great Oline and fantastic receivers. He went on to win 14 games a season. He will keep the Ridets competitive until Jones gets his QB in 2018! Mark my words on this. Vince Young will not have anywhere near the smarts or the ability to pick up the CFL game in training camp. That idea has been nothing but a distraction. Watch for Vince to be a wash by the time training camp is over.

Come on Rod, LA? They've had their day in the sun and picking up Iggy/Bishop isn't going to change that.

Get over the James Franklin deal already Saskatchewan because that ball is in Edmonton's hands much more then you may think...you all figure wait until free agency but the truth of the matter is that if Edmonton can't resign him, he will be traded for probably next to nothing and I bet that Sask is not very high on Hervey's list of teams to deal with, call it a hunch for some odd reason. Also Hervey has more brains in his pinky finger in any term of football then Reynolds and Jones so you better get another 90 players on your practice roster again to find one...CHEATERS.

Hervey has brains. That's funny!

I agree with the poster above. Glenn will be very good if given protection and we really don't know what our young guys can do yet. Brandon Bridge could develop into a damn fine CFL QB if given some playing reps. I vote no to the Vince Young experiment. There's a huge cost in the form of him costing some of our young guys valuable camp reps even IF he signs with no signing bonus and backup money. If he actually does sign, I'd bet he'll wash out of mini or training camp so I hope the Riders aren't dumb enough to give a signing bonus that would count against the cap. (like they did with many players last year ie Price)

The large majority of QBs who come to the CFL have had successful, often standout, college careers. In fact, Id guess the same could be said for most CFL players regardless of position.

It means squat. Kinne and Waters looked weak last year and will be gone by end of pre season. Bridge is intriguing bit very raw. I dont recall seeing bennett play - not sure when he showed up. Glenn is reliable but uninspiring (ie a career backup). So - no, lets not "wait and see" with that group in the stable.

By dumping DD going into year 2 of their rebuild, Jones and co have in effect stated they can do better NOW - not to just wait for something to matrrialize down the road. Its Up to them to prove it.

If Vince Young shows up in Florida for mini-camp ..... I have no doubt he will be the worst QB there. Story will be done.

Hey Rod, the coaches have been real high on Jake Waters since they picked him up last year. He'll be given every chance to grab a hold of the starting gig. How about a story on Jake? Or G.J.? Or Brandon?

The CFL reporting the last couple of months has been right out the TMZ handbook. Good grief.

The pats are in a "swoon" but it has nothing to do with injuries or even the schedule since all teams deal with that. Smart is a #7 d-man, Holmes is 4th line forward and rookie, and Ahl has played insignificantly since he got back from Christmas. That's a far too simplistic excuse for the teams play. It does have everything to do with Zablocki, Cole, Smith and Woods being traded. Along with three very good d-men. All for very little and no betterment to the team. When you lose character and experience it's a problem. Replacing good talent with mediocre talent is a big red flag. Team cohesiveness dies. This team was caught flat footed without the required depth and they will pay the price. A while back Paddock was praising his squad and now he says there are teams just as good and some might argue even better. He has yet to bring home a pennant let alone a championship. A pennant is not even a certainty at this point the way they are playing. It's all about results baby…and to date he hasn't provided any.

Call it butt hurt all you want, I actually was one that didn't care Jones left bud...what I stated there is the actual truth that you fans in sask don't want to grasp and I stand behind what I said about Hervey...he has brains and a back-bone, not trying to be greasy by breaking the rules and then crying about it when he is caught and blaming others such as Mitchell for it...there is a quite simple way of not getting caught cheating, don't cheat. Jones is to busy signing guys and hoping the talent falls onto his lap rather then actually knowing what he is doing. In the last two years we have had numerous guys making NFL teams from the organization thanks to great scouting bringing in talent from camps...not signing an overload of free agents.

good to be an optimist but the Riders right now have the worst QB situation in the league.

I am not sure about Willy being the Rider QB we are looking for,If someone we have or find in the next few months beats out Kevin Glenn for the starting job,I think we will be in good shape.

As far as Vince Young goes, from my understanding he is on probation in the USA till June of 2018.

What is with Arish Madini,we get a feel good story here in Rider Nation and he feels the need to put a negative spin on it.

Give him a call Rod

Regina Pats will not be around come playoff time for long if they keep playing the way they have lately. Being on top all year can be very misleading to young hockey players and can spell Doom sooner than you want . They have to get over all the Hype of being so great and whatever else has them on such a High and settle down and play their game like they were earlier. They will do well if they group together as a Team and play solid Hockey like they know they can.

So vince young won't make it out of training camp if he even gets that far.

Anonymous said...

It's obviously time for the Riders to show the value of their scouting team. Other teams have shown the ability to find players outside the current CFL and it's FA's. Not all the QB's in the CFL are retreads. Some were actually discovered by scouting.

Vernon Davis, now no longer the starter in Durantville, is the guy the Riders need to focus on getting in Green and White.

Anonymous said...

I'd guess Vernon Davis is probably concentrating on returning for another year at tight end for the Washington Redskins next season.

Good luck with your classes Rod.

No to Willy. Had his chance to prove himself in WPG and TO, and couldn't cut the mustard. He's as fragile as Buck Pierce.

I think anyone who wants to play for the Riders and can back in up with skills in the pre-camp to get an invite to training camp, should get a chance. Nothing saying we have to keep them around if they don't work out in camp. How else do you find guys if you don't evaluate them, invite them to camp if they are good enough, and then put them thru the paces.

If a guy years out of playing wants to work hard enough to get into shape and hone his skills to playing levels, and learn a different style of game, starting as a rookie again. I like that drive. I want a guy leading with fire and drive to play and win.

I trust the Rider staff to decide who get's an opportunity or not.

I expect we'll see a lot of quarterbacks in camp this year. They will be really tested using some good receivers.

Fool me once, I'll trade you so Durant can continue to start.

Fool me twice - I'll grant you an extension with a fat paycheque so you can miss the playoffs again. Then I'll trade you somewhere else to dump said fat salary.

Fool me three times - I'll stick with you. Then I'll get fired.

Arash Madani reporting the Riders are in cap troubles..

Anonymous said...

The Kings? love Doughty Quick and Sutter but please! there not even in a playoff spot. Problem is they can't score! Kopitar and Gaborick are showing their age and adding another senior citizen isn't going to be enough to put them over the edge. Pedersen support local for once and get behind one of our Canadian teams! How about at least pretending to be the official unofficial fan of the Oilers. The west isn't as strong as in previous years say for Chicago and Minny. I actually think the oilers could win a round or two. So Pedersen cmon put your money where your mouth is and get behind them Oil!

Hey Pedersen I hope your taking a course in humility..although you'd have zero chance of passing, Mabe you could ask Jones to be your study buddy!

All the fans and media that continue to believe in Jones are becoming unbelievable. If he really believed that one of the young guys would become a starting QB, he would not be in full panic mode and talk to the likes of Manziel and Young. Don't bother telling me that the Manziel story was not proven, neither was it disproved and, with Jones' record, I have no reason to believe his denials. A lot of you still believe that Franklin or Adams or Young will ride in on a white stallion and save this team. Whatever you are smoking must be good stuff! Jones has stung Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. He makes enemies everywhere he goes. Has nobody noticed that he comes out on the bottom of every trade he has made here? Like the players he brought in that took the signing bonus and retired. Do you not think the teams those players came from did not know that might happen? Every team that Jones has stung is now getting their revenge and still laughing. There is no trade imminent to help Mr Jones. Yet a lot of you still believe in Jones' plan. I have a plan to be a multi millionaire. That probably won't happen either. Yes, Jones may sign Young. Nobody else wants him; a QB that hasn't taken a game snap in five years. But keep dreaming; perhaps you can keep the nightmares at bay until July.

I sometimes chuckle when I hear "Team is peeking at the right time" or "Bad time to be in a slump". Playoffs start in 3 weeks, not tomorrow!! Pats will be fine. They have more skill than anyone in the Dub. Just need to work at playing smarter hockey and limit mistakes. Earlier in the year, their skill alone would win games. Now, against good teams, they will have to play smart as well. The Pats played really good playoff hockey the last 2 years and I would expect them to play well this year again. If they are healthy, they will be very tough to beat in a 7 game series.

When was the last time that Moose jaw and Regina had the two best hockey teams in the whole CHL in the same year? As to who is better, that will be sorted out in due course!

Anonymous said...

just so you folks understand how the cap works. You cannot be in trouble with the cap this time of year. No one has made the team and likely only a bit of money has been spent already on bonuses. When players make the team and start to get paid then the spending starts. That is all part of the decision making who makes the team, how will their salary effect the cap dollars. So all you folks who say the riders are in trouble with the cap are nuts. No one is getting paid right now!!!! Now maybe look at teams who signed players and gave them huge bonuses to sign (like Durant in MTL), that spending has started already. So stop being idiots with rider abuse and understand how this all works before you spout off. Now post that will ya Rod!!!

Anonymous said...

Two years ago the Pats made a bunch of trades to get rid of vets for younger guys and they won just a single round of playoffs. Last year they had a better team but again just won a single round of playoffs. They have a good two line team this year and will likely win one round of playoffs. People who don't know a thing about hockey or a thing called "mo" keep saying they will be fine, they have talent. Paddock had them ready for playoffs before. They've won two rounds in two years, hardly impressive. This is about playing smarter hockey, this about playing with passion but mostly it's about depth or lack of it. It's about getting average goaltending when you need lights out goaltending.

This team needed depth at the trade deadline in a few areas and didn't get it.This was the year for them to really go for it and they didn't. Paddock failed to go all in and will no doubt pay for it.. You can't just turn it on and off. Right now the Pats are trending downward and false bravado won't fix that.

lots of posts abusing Jones for breaking rules and being sneaky.....well, Hervey has done lots of the same people acuse Jones for. How about signing players before free agency(Odell Willis), and got fined for that. There are lots more with Hervey so why doesn't people abuse him for his list. Well, because he doesn't work for the riders, that's why. Everyone, including some reporters, target the riders because they are a key link to stirring interest. They are the cornerstone franchise and people like to hear gossip about the leaders.

It seems like people are forgetting about Brandon Bridge. In the games he played last year he looked unbelievable. He also is a Canadian. I think that with a good OLine and a great receiving core, which the Riders have, Bridge will be ready to take the next step and start for the Riders next season.
