SCRUFFY'S THIS N' THAT

Welcome to Friday! Here are the usual weekly thoughts running through my muddled mind, and as always they come in no particular order:

While out and about, people ask me a variety of questions. For the most point, they are valid ones so let's try and answer some of those questions that have been thrown at me

1, WHEN IS THE CFL SCHEDULE COMING OUT? -  I would think we are a couple of weeks away. The CFL schedule usually comes out in mid-February, and I have heard nothing to say it won't be coming out around that time.

2. WILL THE ALOUETTES BE THE FIRST TEAM TO PLAY THE RIDERS AT NEW MOSAIC? -  Yes and No.  Technically, they won't be the first team as the green-and-white will play an exhibition game against likely Calgary or Winnipeg seeing they played BC and Edmonton in last year's pre-season. However, I do think it behooves the CFL to have Darian Durant and the Alouettes come into Mosaic for the back half of a Saturday doubleheader in Week 1 which could very well be July 1. Why wouldn't you do this if you are the CFL.

3, WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH CFL WEEK? -  That's a great question and it's one I wish I could answer. The CFL brought the announcement of CFL week with a big splash at the Harbour Landing Brewhouse, but that has been it. When the CFL made the announcemnt, I said if they market it right they had something on their hands, but if they didn't they could let a golden opportunity slip through its fingers.  It would appear as if the league has chosen the latter.  The potential is there for something big, but the league doesn't appear keen on marketing it. If they do, now might be a good time to start.

4. IS THE MEMORIAL CUP COMING TO REGINA IN 2018? -- I don't know how it can't. Why wouldn't the CHL want to bring the 100th anniversary of Canada's junior hockey championship to the Brandt Centre.  It would coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Pats, the team's history with the military can't be ignored, the team is more than capable of being a good host team (unlike the last time when the squad had to be ripped apart and pieced together again) that could go in as the defending CHL champs, and the event would be played at arguably one of the top sporting facilities in Canada in Evraz Place. While the hockey would be happening inside the Brandt Centre, the potential for other activities in the Eventplex, the Agribition building and the new International Trade Centre makes it a hard no for the Canadian Hockey League.

5. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE SUPER BOWL?  -  Seeing your team in the big game is special. I have had that opportunity three times, but fans of the Atlanta Falcons have only had one chance. One of my good friends is a Falcons fan and I am hoping he can stay sober enough to enjoy it on Sunday, but I don't think he will go to bed a happy man. Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots want to stick it to Roger Goodell and the NFL over the deflategate. Brady has been waiting for this since his four game suspension was upheld. He is focussed and a focussed Tom Brady is bad news for Atlanta. The Falcons need everything to go right and then some. I see New England winning handily, I see Brady being the MVP and Roger Goodell high-tailing it off that podium as quickly as possible.

6. WHEN IS THE REVIEW ON COUGAR ATHLETICS COMING OUT? - Truthfully, I thought it would already be out. I am guessing they are waiting until the season comes to an end which will likely be when the womens basketball game plays their last game at nationals.  When that review comes out, I think it will be bad news for some programs----programs that aren't winning and haven't won for a long time. It also wouldn't surprise me if the Rams are asked to become the Cougars which is another debate for another time.  I also wonder if the report will lead to the hiring of a new director of athletics.

Tanya Reynoldson has held the Cougar ship steady since Dick White retired, but there is seemingly no rush to hire his replacement. Here's an idea.  Hire former U of R womens basketball coach Christine Stapleton to the position. Stapleton currently heads up the athletics program at the University of Calgary. She knows her stuff and she is what the U of R needs. She took a basketball team and started it on the path to excellence that it is on now. I think she could do the same with Cougar athletics as a whole. I know she loves Regina, she loves the University, and I think she would relish the opportunity and take Cougar athletics to the next level.  She was in Regina last weekend when the Calgary basketball teams were here as the alumni got together. I would hope some conversations were had.

7. WHAT SHOULD THE OILERS DO AT THE TRADE DEADLINE?  -  Four words.  Get a backup goalie.  Barring a complete collapse, the Oilers playoff drought should come to an end, but while adding a defenceman like Kevin Shattenkirk might be paramount, I don't think Edmonton can go into the Stanley Cup chase without adding to their depth at goalie. Cam Talbot has been a workhorse, but if something happens to him, they're done!

Talbot needs to have more nights off down the stretch and someone is needed to provide that and possibly play if something should happen. Who you get though is the million dollar question. Ondrei Pavelec would have been a nice addition, but he has shown the Jets that perhaps he shouldn't have been with the Moose all year. Jaroslav Halak is too expensive to be a number 2 and many other playoff teams won't want to give up their backup as they are in a playoff chase. This one will be tough for Peter Chiarelli.

That's all I got. Well, not quite!  You may have seen the Bombers are pulling a page out of the Riders playbook as they have put up a billboard outside the new Mosaic telling Rider fans its just 6 hours to Winnipeg.  That prompted the sick, twisted individual known as Drew Dalby from the WOLF 104.9 to come up with this retort.

Well done!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the Super Bowl!

Good job Scruffy, 7 questions and not one definative answer.

I'm a huge NFL fan and not into this year's SuperBowl at all. I guess I'd hope for Patriots to show Goodell up for Brady's deflate-gate suspension.

Curtis Atkinson was the acting athletic director before Tanya. You really can't remember squat, can you?

I hope Montreal don't get the first regular season game in our stadium. I am a riders fan more then a Durant fan, with the contract in Montreal he signed, he left for the money... Even though he was traded he was gone anyway. I hope he loses every game the bum, and not given the satisfaction of opening the new stadium.. The new stadium is about the riders and not Durant. We as fans to enjoy with our team...

I hope Brady gets his a-s kicked.

You asked...Why wouldn't you do this if you are the CFL? I think the answer is the CFL seems to be run as a part time job by some knuckleheads.

They don't know how to market. Their expertise is making the game unwatchable, ignoring the fans and trying to destroy our game. Watch, the next bright idea will be to institute fair catches and touchbacks for safety reasons you see.I dislike the way the league is going forward and I bet I am not alone.

Durant didn't leave for the money. He left for the respect. All Jones gave him here was disrespect and disdain.

Money, if he cant handle a little critic about his play, and stats don't lie he is average at best.... He don't know much about negotiations. Jones done the best for the riders.. I say BYE BYE to the next Henry in Riderville. I hope the fans all sing out DAARRIIAANN...Jones will succeed and you whiners better be ready to apologize.

DURANT LEFT FOR THE MONEY. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Get it through your fat head. He also bounced more passes of the turf than a basketball player

The Friday Scruffy hate is so amusing. What a bunch of nut-lickers!

I love how everyone belittles Durant for leaving for the money. He got TRADED and then signed a new contract. He wanted to be paid a wage which reflects his value to the team. That value was undermined by Chris Jones. Sure, Jones is re - building and working within the cap in order to fill other holes but he nonetheless devalued Darian who was subsequently traded to a team that wanted him and was willing to pay him what he was requesting.

If my boss told me tomorrow I wasn't in the plans but was willing to be move me somewhere else where they were willing to compensate me fairly based not only on my perception of what I was worth but also what they valued my contributions as I would do the exact same thing.

As for opening the new stadium, I read on this blog a while ago, and they were correct in saying if Durant and the Als open the new stadium it takes away from the Riders and the unveiling of the new stadium. Have a traditional rival in town to open the place. That needs to be a western opponent and in my mind all signs would point to either Calgary or Winnipeg.

Just my two cents....

The U of R would do themselves a big favour if they hired Christine.

They would also do themselves a big favour if they cut volleyball and soccer from the role and put money into areas like hockey.

I hope when the Als come to town Durant takes you guys to town and even gives Jones a wink to remind him that this was his fault in the whole situation. See people saying Jones is going to manage...my question is though at what cause it sure won't be football.

I would imagine that having Darian playing in the 1st regular season game at the new Mosaic Stadium is the LAST thing the Rider organization would want. Once you are gone, you are the enemy -- no matter how much you contributed to the success of the team. Nope - Montreal here for game #1 won't be happening.

I would expect it will be either Calgary or Winnipeg. Sure would be nice for the schedule to come out so we can get our summer plans in place.

Cut the hockey and put the money towards more worldwide sports like soccer.

Well, as per a suggestion yesterday I had Nabob today and feel much more positive about the upcoming Rider season.
Go Riders and Falcons
Roll Tide

I bet you are all wrong about who plays the home opener. You can take Toronto to the Bank. Fans will flock to the 1st game no matter who plays. Made for TV home opener. Appealing to Fans(?) in the Centre of the Universe first and foremost. No one else matters in Canada. Where do the schedule makers reside??

Ive been a life long, die hard rider fan. Tried and true. Season Tickets since I was a kid. Barely ever miss a game, home or away.

That said, I truly feel I may find myself pulling for Darian and the Als when they face the Riders this year. I will have to wait and see on Game day.

I disliked Jones before he got here, but was totally willing to give him a chance. My opinion of him since he arrived has quickly and steadily degraded back to my original view of him. His Lack of character and integrity is bothersome and makes it real hard to pull for the guy.

Count me as one who thinks Reynolds made a rookie mistake by inserting him as the head of football ops as well as coach and GM. Think about it-Jones has NO experience as anything but a coach, but in order to get him out of EDM, reynolds caved and gave him carte blanche. Not very often that you see a guy playing the roles of D coordinator all the way up through to Vice President, let alone someone with No experience beyond coaching. CRAZY.

The jones lovers can tell me to give up my tickets all they want. TOO BAD - Ill keep em, enjoy the surroundings of the new stadium and call out Jones all I want. Based on the moves hes made and the results weve seen so far, he gets nothing from me, until he proves he knows what hes doing.

Having Darian here would be the best thing for the Riders. Get it done early. Why have it extend into September or October. Once he has played here, he's not coming back unless it is with yet another team and if that happens, the Riders are the winner in the whole scenario.

Anonymous said...

"Nice Try". Yeah, that's usually what the receiver would say when he came back to the huddle.

They should leave the Alouettes visit until later on in the season when the riders are playing their home games in front of 8,000 empty seats. DD will spike attendance for one game anyway.

Get the Blades outta Saskatoon already

Anonymous said...

Hey Boner.

Having DD here in Wk 1 makes sense

1) Get it over with for both sides
2) What happens if DD is injured and can't play. Could happen!

The sooner it happens, the better it is for both sides. I am guessing DD would say the same thing.

Good read today Scruff!

GO FALCONS!

Doubtful the Bombers are the opponent in week 1. They played the Riders and Calgary 3 times each 2 years ago, Calgary and Edmonton 3 times each last year, and are likely keeping the pattern going by playing Edmonton and BC 3 times this season meaning the only 2 Riders/Bombers games will be Labour Day and Banjo Bowl, until next season where it will be back to a 3 game series

Esay now everyone, slow your roll down, easy now! Chris Jones and company need to hire Mr. Roy Shivers asap! He knows football inside out top to bottom with an astute eye for evaluating, signing long term player talent. A great addition to a Riders organization - check ✔

Has there been any mention about CFL week since the official announcement?

I was excited about this when I first heard it, but I admittedly forgot about it until mentioned here.

Once again, the CFL is guilty of an epic fail.
