RIDERS WORKOUT MANZIEL? TEAM, PLAYER SAY NO

REGINA - Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Chris Jones has denied a report that the Saskatchewan Roughriders illegally worked out former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel.

"The Saskatchewan Roughriders have not held or attended a workout involving Johnny Manziel,'' Jones, who's also the team's general manager, said in a statement. "With that, I will not be commenting further on the report.''

Football blog 3DownNation.com reported Thursday that the Riders worked out Manziel in Florida last month prior to the Senior Bowl. Manziel is an NFL free agent, having been released in 2016 after two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

But the former Heisman Trophy winner remains on the negotiation list of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which gives them CFL exclusivity to him. The report added the Riders didn't secure permission from the Ticats to put Manziel through his paces.

The CFL says it's looking into the situation.

"We are investigating,'' Paulo Senra, the CFL director of communications, said in a statement. "The Riders tell us that they did not work out Manziel.

"So at this point, it appears the report is false. Should other evidence come to light, we will deal with it accordingly.''

In August, the Riders were fined $60,000 and had over $26,000 deducted from their $5.1-million salary cap after being found guilty by the CFL of roster violations.

Is that surprising?? Chris Jones tried the same trick last year with his practice roster and was fined for it......when it happens again, he threatens to fine the reporter.

If he has his head on right and wants to come up here Jones would be a fool not to try to make a trade to get him from Hamilton

Fake News Exhibit A?

Anonymous said...

It must be big news, even Tim and Sid are talking about it. And they hate the CFL!

This will be an interesting story to follow. Someone's life is about to get a lot more difficult. If the story is true this becomes a big problem for the Riders and for Chris Jones who does have a history of not always being on the right side of established procedures. If it is false then 3DownNation loses alot of credibility as a source of CFL news.

hope this is just some alternate facts about Manziel, really just about had enough of all the crap that goes on in the CFL and am losing interest quickly. If it's false then we need to look at the power that media seems to have in reporting whatever the heck they want without being able to back it up. If it's true then let's have the proof before we fire Jones and kick him out of Saskatchewan, either way I'm tired of the drama

Holy Riders really grasping here! Anyone know what Tommy Maddox is doing?

I see Jonsie and the Circus haven't left town after last year.

I hope this isn't just semantics by Jones. Maybe he doesn't think it was a 'workout'.

Somebody needs to ask if anyone from the Riders have spoken or had any contact with Manziel or his reps, or if they spoke to Hamilton about him.

Jones threatening legal action over a news report stinks of overreaction. He has already shown his first reaction is to always everything.

I find it hard to believe Dunk would run the story without at least a couple of sources (Bombers GM). His reputation is all he has and one story would ruin his career.

TMZ is investigating now so we will know one way or another soon.

Johnny Football is perfect for the Canadian gam however, he would never survive in a small city like Regina. Send him to Toronto or Hamilton were he can go to the bar without people knowing.

I don't think it will matter what bar Johnny Football goes to in any city he will be recognized. The Riders might as well add Dieter Brock and Russ Jackson to the list.

Manziel's agent is denying any CFL workout.
Interesting day.

Jones over reacting by threatening legal action!
Same as the trolls are overreacting to this story?

Anonymous said...

Where's Jones' defense lawyer John Knight on this one?

Anonymous said...

"Leave no stone unturned" yeh, right. There's quarterbacks hiding under stones all over the place.

Anonymous said...

I predict this is proven true as we watch Jones's circus continue. He obviously has zero idea how to operate a team within the league's regulations. IN OVER HIS HEAD.

Anonymous said...

How the hell is it the same thing? He never denied he was bringing in guys. If he wanted to talk to or workout Manziel he would have talked to the Cats. Shut up if all yur gonna do is bash.

Anonymous said...

Hell. he could play in Toronto and nobody would know. ...or care.

The Editor of 3Down Nation says they stand by their story 1000%!

So, I am thinking where there is smoke, the fire will soon be found.

Anonymous said...

So if Dunk stands by his story then why doesn't he reveal the details as to when and where the workout was, who was all involved and provide some smoking gun evidence to prove it? All we have is his word and his reputation which in my mind doesn't mean squat without proof.

Unlessssss, Rod leaked the fake story to Dunk to stir up some media hype coinciding with the big Riderville party tonight? Could be!

Or...did someone at the league office that hates Dunk for his antics at last year's draft leak him the story to make him look bad?

Cheating again...enough is enough, throw the book at Jones so he understands he can't do what he wants when he wants. He is a disgrace to the CFL.

I say there ole chap, Mr Armanti Edwards the answer for the Rrs starting qb job 2017+. Pump up the guns Armanti, riderville needs a long term savior.

Did you know the Manziel family is originally from Syria. True Story.
Perhaps he is fleeing the Trump regime.

Burden of proof rests with "the sources" and the reporter. Odd that there was no photo of the event is this day and age with ubiquitous use of cell phones.

John Knight said...

Why are you hanging Jones over this? He said he didn't, the agent said he didn't, Why make Jones the story. Go after Dunk. I hope he gets his ass sued off and you idiots crawl back under your rock.

Anonymous said...

If this story is true or false look at the media coverage it garnered for the CFL across North America. That can only be good. Maybe Orridge put it out there.

Anonymous said...

If he gets recognized in Vegas while wearing a disguise do you honestly think Toronto or Hamilton will provide him anonymity? No of course not.

Anonymous said...

I wonder what 3downnations position was during last years CFL draft, Justin Dunk somehow had access to who was being drafted, well ahead of all media. Why did CFL.ca drop him? Yes Rob was dropped too but I expect that was his critisim of the commish. Has anyone asked what Riders had to gain in testing Manziel, if he is Hamilton's property. If they did test him what benefit to the team. If Manziel, his agent and the Riders say the accusations are preposterous, what creditable source is Dunk using?

IMPRESSED WITH THE DETERMINATION OF THE ARMANTI FOR PREZ POSTER.

AS FOR THE MANZIEL STORY... MOST OF WHAT WE SEE IS BS NEWS WITH NO/LITTLE BASIS IN TRUTH. THERE ARE VIRTUALLY NEVER ANY CONSEQUENCES FOR THE PEOPLE WHO PUMP OUT THE STORIES. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO DUNK OR 3D EITHER WAY.

IF IT IS TRUE, JONES SURE ISN'T VERY GOOD AT KEEPING HIS NOSE CLEAN AND/OR STAYING UNDER THE RADAR.

IF IT ISN'T JONES IS THE PERFECT SCAPEGOAT FOR A WILD STORY LIKE THIS... HISTORY OF BREAKING THE RULES... BIGGEST CFL MARKET... THEIR QB HAS BEEN THE STORY ALL OFF SEASON... SEEMS LIKE A GOOD WAY TO GET SOME HITS ON THE OLE PAGE!

I WOULD LOVE TO KEEP RODDY TO OURSELVES, BUT WITH HOW MUCH HE SEEMS TO BE PUMPING UP THE NEW HOCKEY TEAM IN VEGAS, IT WOULD BE COOL TO SEE HIM AS THE VOICE OF THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS/THE VEGAS SOMETHINGTHEYCANTRADEMARKS

To John Knight: All of us idiots can't crawl back under our rock. Haven't you heard? There are a lot of good QBs hiding under stones and Jones is overturning all those stones and releasing all of us idiots from underneath them. Unfortunately, he hasn't turned over the right one yet to find that great QB.

really nice attitude towards Jones. Guilty until proven innocent.Typical non Rider fans

If Dunk is standing behind his story 100% then why did he wait over a week to let it out of the bag? He obviously knew about it when it happened if he's so sure of himself right?? Something is fishy af here and this is far from over!!

Anonymous said...

Details have been stated somewhere, I seen it has been said it was in January with a 3ed party of the riders

Dunk should be blogging for the Hockey Buzz as well, both blogs are 100% accurate. 3down and Buzz are a waste of GB.

With the Riders, Manziel and Manziel's agent all stating that this report is false, I guess we all fell for the first 'fake' CFL news story of 2017.

I guess we will know better next time when we read an article posted by Justin Dunk.

Anonymous said...

"If Dunk is standing behind his story 100% then why did he wait over a week to let it out of the bag?"

Maybe because he took the time to verify it before going public with it? Maybe he wanted to be confident that he wasn't potentially hurting someone's reputation first?

People crap on dunk a lot, but I can't think of too many times when he's been wrong, lying or unprofessional.

Jones, meanwhile...

3downnation where Dunk wrote this article has taken down the article. I just looked and it is gone.......interesting!!!

Rod Pedersen said...

I don't think so. This article is still up: http://3downnation.com/2017/02/09/riders-workout-johnny-manziel-2/

Innocent until proven guilty. Where's the proof Dunk?

Someone is lying and reputations (maybe livelihood) will be toast.

Anonymous said...

So if this story is indeed true, is Dunk going to refer the CFL to his secret source for them to be able to fine and convict the Riders? If he doesn't because he doesn't want to reveal his source then the Riders get off scott free. And that makes Dunk look really bad.

Hmmm. Maybe Vince Young was added to the Riders list to be traded to the Ticats for the neg list rights to Manziel lol.

I agree that Jones's credibility is somewhat shaky considering the roster violations last year, but he would have to be a complete moron to work out a player on a different teams' neg list. Of course, Jones hasn't proven that he's a competent GM yet so I guess if the shoe fits. What could he hope to accomplish as he'd be unable to sign that player without alerting the Ticats by offering to acquire the rights via trade? It just doesn't make any sense, but then again, neither does belittling and trading your franchise QB without having the heir apparent on your roster. (With all due respect to KG)

Anonymous said...

what is your take on this then Rod? You must have an opinion.

Anonymous said...

very very simple to solve this. Have Dunk divulge his source of information. Why not?? Everyone else in this society has to back what they say about people, why not this clown. If you accuse someone of anything, you have to back it up and prove it. Especially when you attack someone's or a companies character. If he stands 100% by his article then back it up with some proof.

Anonymous said...

With Jones, where there is smoke, there usually is fire. His denial doesn't mean a lot. He may not have directly been involved but I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't something to this. IF they investigate and IF they find out that this is true, the Riders are going to be coughing up another huge fine. I sure hope it's not true but I don't think the reporter dreamt this up and I am sure he wouldn't publish it unless he felt very confident in the information he got. And the drama continues.....

Anonymous said...

come on Rod, give us some opinions instead of the same information all the other sites provide already. What do you think, what do you know, who, why?? Write something no one else does.

Anonymous said...

Johnny manziel, Vince young and ray rice were asked to try out for this new league.

https://www.thespringleague.com

If manziel and young did try out for this league and the Riders were at the try out sessions, how would this be any different than rider scouts being at an NFL training camp where players are trying out for an NFL team? Are cfl teams prohibited from watching players that are on other cfl teams neg lists in NFL training camps?

Anonymous said...

John Knight you could not be more right. It is absolutely disgusting to me that these people that call themselves fans are simply looking for excuses to hate on Jones. They cannot forgive him for cutting loose Dressler and Chick and now suddenly everyone is on the DD as the greatest QB ever train...despite a career 58-54 record. But hey people in Riderville need someone to hate...they booed Lancaster and Austin in 4 years tons of people hated Durant, now he is the most amazing QB ever? This shows you the mentality of some of these people. If they truly hate Chris Jones that much then get off the bandwagon but don't try to get back on in September when they have more wins than losses and are headed to the playoffs.

Arash Madani: "The Riders are probably denying Charles Oakley has ever been to MSG. Which means CFL PR says because the Riders said so, it must be true."

Really?? What an irresponsible quote. Just another reason why I pay little to no attention to that whiny-sounding blowhard.

Anonymous said...

Very odd that the sources do not specify a date or day or even a specific location of the alleged work-out. A low-rent P.I. could fish out some facts.

Anonymous said...

Just had a thought if Manziel has been on Hamilton's Neg List since 2012, isn't that a long time. Did they ever make him an offer. Suggest the CFL review their rules. Just seems leaving him to rot on one teams list, seems unfair.

Anonymous said...

He stays neutral to appease everyone

Anonymous said...

You want Dunk to name his sources...I believe he did, it's just not to you or me which makes sense because unless you work for the Cfl this information is probably classified until the investigation is complete...is your last name Orridge, didn't think so, now quit whining that you need to know.

Anonymous said...

For now, Rod's opinion is the part line.
Then after Jones is finally fired he'll say he knew about it before Dunk did.

Nice try!

It is hard to stand behind Jones for letting Durant get away when he has no heir apparent on the scene. If he seriously thought that one of the young guys on the roster was an up and coming great QB, he wouldn't have to "turn over every stone". And to throw away an entire season because he might get Franklin next year is ridiculous. No guarantees there. The job of a coach and a GM is to put the best team he can on the field, certainly keeping an eye on the future. In the meantime, while Jones is busy turning over stones, he has signed very few of our free agents and we are about to lose some more Canadian players and some international players. That will affect the Riders depth even if he manages to sign some starters in free agency. They have way too many holes to fill through free agency. The free agent pool has shrunk considerably this last week because other CFL GMs have been busy signing contracts. And it still remains that we have no QB that can take this team anywhere. Jones has a lot to prove to Rider fans. He has had one year and promises of what might happen with his plan in another two or three years doesn't cut it. Nobody gets three or four years to produce substantial results. I would suggest that if the Riders don't make the playoffs this year, they could very well be turning over every stone in search of a new coach and GM.

Anonymous said...

Dunk can specify a day and a location without revealing his source. These insiders have to protect the identity of there sources, I get that. Day and location would add credibility.

Anonymous said...

Seeing that if it wasn't for his drinking problem he would be in the NFL so rules are rules...that is why trades can happen. Quit trying to suggest changing things because of being caught breaking rules

Welcome to the circus! Jones says "fake news" or is Dunk simply presenting "alternative facts"? Amazing what one can find when you turn over all the stones.
