DUNK: RIDERS ADD VINCE YOUNG TO NEG LIST

From 3DownNation.com's Justin Dunk:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added former NFL quarterback Vince Young to their negotiation list.

A third overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by Tennessee, Young played six NFL seasons with the Titans and Eagles and a member of the Bills, Packers and Browns. He’s thrown for almost 9,000 yards in his NFL career with 46 touchdowns and 51 interceptions while adding 282 rushing attempts for 1,459 (5.2 yards-per-carry average) and 12 touchdowns. The 33-year-old hasn’t taken a pro snap since 2011 with Philadelphia. He announced his retirement from the NFL on June 14, 2014.

Young, who won a NCAA national championship with the University of Texas in 2006, has had bumps along his pro career. Distraught by poor play and injury, he disappeared for several hours in 2008, leading then-Titans head coach Jeff Fisher to phone police. And in 2012, the Associated Press reported that Young had spent much of the $34 million he earned in the NFL. In January 2014, Young filed for bankruptcy.

The Riders currently have veteran Kevin Glenn as well as youngsters Brandon Bridge, G.J. Kinne, Bryan Bennett and Jake Waters under contract at quarterback.

Adding Young to the neg list does not necessarily mean that he will sign with the Riders, but given that the 2005 Heisman Trophy runner-up was added on Jan. 30, the timing is certainly curious.

LMAO!!!! Keep em coming Jonesy!!
FYI, Young is on probation for a recent DUI.

That Jones is an absolute football genius....LOL.

I am assuming that comment is sarcastic as I am not reading anything in Young's profile that sounds promising. Injuries, age, poor play which are all supposed reasons why Durant was offered a crappy deal. Issues with the law and not sure what it says about anyone that can blow thru $34 million in 6 to 8 years.

He is 33 years old with personal problems and injury issues. I thought Jones didn't want Durant because of his age and injury history?

Anonymous said...

Maybe the coach can see something in this quarterback. Let's see what he brings to the game. His personal money issues are absolutely none of our business. It's too bad that is deemed to be important. How about we quit ragging on Chris Jones and go out and watch some games this year before we write the season off.

Peter King long ago and I will never forget this. Vince Young I think only lost two games at Texas they were so dominant. He washed out of the NFL and King says he thinks of the song Glory Days by Springsteen when he thinks of Young.

No no, that's not how the trills on here work. They hate Ji es for getting rid of their beloved Chick and Dressier and now Durant so rather than support him at all it's just the in thing to do and you slam him because you're an educated football people. That's what 99% of these posts on here are.

Anonymous said...

The money issue suggests a lack of responsibility or good judgement. Just what you need in a leadership role!

Anonymous said...

So this is Jones' plan to bring the Riders back to respectability.

John Knight said...

No matter who Jones brings in, there will always be idiots ragging on him! If he brought in Eli Manning, these idiots would say he has too much experience. Time to give up on some of the trolls who comment here.

By the time he learns the ins and out of the Canadian game, he will be North of 35, not a guy for the future. Onward with the Franklin Expedition!

Anonymous said...

The main problem with Vince is that he is not Young ...

Keith Pottruff said...

Well if he does sign it's either going to be a brilliant move or a horrible move. There's really no in between. And having Kevin Glenn there in case it's the latter is a smart move. Assuming he's in shape he will have very little right now in the way of wear and tear to deal with.

Should be interesting!

Evan Wiome said...

But then how can they have their irrational hate for the man who took away their heroes?

Anonymous said...

Well said Evan Well said.

Anonymous said...

Hasn't taken a pro snap in SIX years!

In the history of sports, when has an athlete gone away for six years and come back with any competency. Forget about all of the off field weirdness, a six year hiatus is a pretty big obstacle to overcome.

What kind of shape is he in?

Anonymous said...

OMG!!

Anonymous said...

Oh boy, getting hard to defend these moves more and more.

100% American made = Vince Young, Keystone XL pipe, Budweiser, Apple pie.

Evan, please list all of Jones' accomplishments in the last thirteen months.

Obviously Jones and Durant didn't see eye to eye or Durant wasn't "yes sir" enough for Jones. My sides hurt from laughing right now.

Anonymous said...

Bwaahahaha!! The Jones lovers can't seriously defend this move as Jones has clearly lost his mind. I can't even get upset at this move as it's just too damned funny. And those same Jones lovers probably used to make fun of Taman recycling all of those old bomber players lol. What a joke.

Saskatchewan Roughriders long term starting qb is on the current roster, his name ... Armanti Edwards. He just has to warm up, load the on field plus yardage guns, and good to go is the next CFL phenom superstar.

Anonymous said...

Hilarious. Who's next? Enquiring minds want to know!Me, I'm waiting till June. ....maybe longer.

Anonymous said...

John Knight Eli Manning LOL

He was an extremely gifted athlete, but who knows if he still kept up the training past few years.

Wouldn't be surprised if he was here as a #3 guy and only in to run the QB option series similar to how Edmonton uses lynch.

Trying to trade for franklin will be cheaper after the draft if the riders do try and obtain him this year, and signing older players provides the Riders options for this season to hint to franklin they still have an opening for a young up and coming QB next year in fa

When did Jim Popp become the Roughriders GM?

It's a neg list folks, settle down. Ps, he would be great up here!!

Name a football player that came back to play after being out of football for 6 years?

Get serious Jones!

It's a negotiation list thing. When did that ever matter? All you haters, take a deep breath and realize this has as much immediate impact on the team as who wins the soft drink contract at the new stadium. Lighten up.

Clay said...

Who in hell said Young was being signed????????
Wake up folks. Teams put ALL KINDS OF PLAYERS ON THEIR LISTS, THAT NEVER SHOW UP IN THE CFL!!!!
Every time Jones makes any move, the NAYERS are all over him. Forget it & get on with your lives & stay home.

I remember a QB coming out of retirement and he was in awsome shape, ready to play and he was fantastic (in his day). Poor old KJ.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, you're right. 8 years ago.

I graduated grade 12 back in 1979, played high school football, all city champion, scored 4 touchdowns in a single game. I came back this past summer and played football at Wascana Park. Good to go! Once you've got it, you never lose it.

Gotta love the persistence shown here often by the fan boy of Armanti Edwards with his campaign to have him pass instead of do what he is best at - catch and run. No way, no how Edwards will be a CFL QB at this stage.

Evan Wiome said...

1. He won more games in 2016 than the team won in 2015. Surely you won't dispute five is more than three.
2. Cleaned up the roster mess. Got rid of the players from 2015 who were just not good enough, and dealt with those players who were being overpaid.
3. Proper management of the salary cap.
I know there will be some talk of the fines from 2016, but consider this for a moment: the 2016 fines were $90k-ish in total. Since the enforcement of the salary cap began the Riders have been fined $208351.00.
That long history of excess and irresponsibility is a huge factor in the failure of 2014 and 2015.
So his biggest accomplishment his running the Riders as a proper professional sports team should be run.
And he did all that in only 13/14 months. Relax your naive and unrealistic expectations and let the man do his job. Rome wasn't built in a day and contenders are not built in 13 or 14 months.

The Rider office needs to find that mouse that keeps squeaking this stuff out the green door.
Vince Young on the neg list isn't really a problem, the question is why would you as a GM even bother.
Vince Young carries more baggage then the cabana boy for the Kardashians.

Somebody need to stop free pouring the liquor when the Rider management comes around.

This is the part I don't get at all,by the associated press dated Jan 12/2017... 18 months probation? must be a neg list plan for 2018/2019.

AUSTIN, Texas — Former Texas and NFL quarterback Vince Young has pleaded no contest and been sentenced to 18 months of probation for a 2016 drunken driving arrest in Austin.

Young was also fined $300 Thursday and ordered by Travis County Judge Elisabeth Earle to complete 60 hours of community service, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

He also must attend a drunken-driving class and install a device in his vehicle that won’t let it start if it detects alcohol on his breath.

According to the county attorney’s office, Young’s blood-alcohol concentration was three times the legal limit when tested after he was pulled over last Jan. 24 for erratic driving.

Young played six seasons in the NFL, most of it with the Tennessee Titans, after a brilliant career at Texas that included a national title in 2005. He now works for the University of Texas promoting diversity and community engagement.

Chris Jones Conspiracy Theory #08956

Chris Jones purposely drew the ire of Durant in negotiations because Vince Young was his guy all along! He knew calling him a mediocre QB was going to cause him to bolt, thus freeing up cash to bring in Young. In fact, he also brought in Kevin Glenn cause he knew that Young might struggle to learn the game and who better to teach him the ropes than the CFL veteran. It is also believed that Young's time away from football has helped his body heal, and while he is 35 years old, his football body is actually 29. I would even go as far to suggest that Jones has invested in a Vince Young Steak House as an unwavering show of support.

So there you have it, everything everyone was thinking, every conclusion jumped too has just been laid out. The planned progression here is, Neg list, Mini Camp, Training Camp, Open New Mosaic with number 10 running the rock into the corner in OT for the win ala Rose Bowl!

Print it!..... cause how could this not be the case?

ps. I am not a robot....

Getting Franklin cheaper after the draft? Sorry for your luck, I believe all of Edmonton plus the organization would rather see Franklin stay for one more year then help the Riders out at the most important position...if anyone gets him cheaper as you say it will be a team from the east. I think all outside of the rider fans want to have another good laugh this year and by the looks of it we are in store for a good one bahahaha. Bring Manziel in also at least this guy will have someone to go to the clubs with.

Anonymous said...

Only #1 is a verifiable achievement, and its a pretty weak one. The other two are just your opinion, and theyre also pretty weak.

Anonymous said...

#2 Got rid of the players who weren't good enough and brought in a record number of players who also weren't good enough. LOL
#3 Besides the fines, the CFL also cut back the Riders salary cap by $25,000. Don't forget that.

Evan Wiome said...

So you would have been happy if he had kept the exact same roster as 2015 and not tried to improve or change anything? Wow, that is some management genius right there.

I added the $60k fine with the reduction in the salary cap and the $5k I think it was for going to midfield in Calgary during the player introductions.

Morgan said...

Vince Young would destroy the CFL. He's huge, fast, and has a cannon or an arm. I don't know if he has his mind right but if he does, then look out CFL!

Anonymous said...

I find it funny how everyone is going after Jones.

He blew up the secondary, every single DB from the year before did not start the season for the Rider's. How many of them were signed to another team? That tells me that these players were not good enough to play in the CFL. How can you argue with that? He did what he had to and found some great young players to play in the backfield, that will only get better with time. Made some great signings out of the NFL cuts! Free agency will be upon us soon and we will see what is available and who he is able to persuade to come play for us!

We will see come opening day and the team that is assembled before us.

Go Rider's Go!

Off topic I know but I don't know where to post this. For those who haven't heard, Ronald Gasser indicted by grand jury yesterday in shooting death of Joe McKnight.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article130375039.html#storylink=cpy

They are not giving details, but I understand the Stand Your Ground law and can read between the lines, short story is Gasser must have initiated the conflict on the highway, and that's what I expect will come out during the trial. If convicted, he's locked up for life. So unnecessary.

Anonymous said...

So would Joe Montana...wait he is old too.

Anonymous said...

The Armanti Edwards agent or fan who posts here to pump Edward's tires as an elite QB (LOL) may be right about the town of Riderville, but Rider Nation is an opened minded and open ended bastion of reason.

Evan you are doing a poor job of trying to replace Obama.
