WILLIE JEFFERSON EXTENDS WITH RIDERS

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today international defensive lineman Willie Jefferson has signed an extension to remain with the team. As per team policy, details of the contract were not released.

Jefferson (6’6 – 245) joined the Riders in September, 2016 after attending training camp with the Washington Redskins where he played three NFL preseason games, registering two defensive tackles.

In five regular season games with the Green and White last season, the 25-year-old Texas native picked up eight defensive tackles, three quarterback sacks and one forced fumble.

Jefferson spent his first two CFL seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, picking up 43 defensive tackles and ten quarterback sacks in starting 16 of his 35 regular season games played. He won his first career Grey Cup with the Eskimos in 2015.

“It was important for us to sign Willie to an extension and keep him with the Riders going forward,” stated Riders Vice President of Football Operations, General Manager and Head Coach Chris Jones. “He is a young, athletic and explosive player that is a key piece of our defence and overall team foundation. He has the ability to change the course of a game on every snap as Riders fans witnessed over his short period with the team last year.”

Jefferson was eligible to become a CFL free agent on February 14th.

Make the Roughriders great again!

Should be fun to watch him pound Darian to the turf! No mercy Willie!

We're really rolling... were on out way now...
We got that Rider pride, a feeling you just cant hide, Rider pride... Rider pride...

Very astute signing by Jones/Murphy setting the team foundation for the long term.

We have to assume a one year deal as no terms were released, unlike Newsome's 3 year deal.

Can Willie throw a football :)

Massive signing for riders! TEAM starting to take shape vs. over paying for a single position.

more good ones to come.

YUUGE SIGNING!

Not sure if people even get how big this signing is. Might arguably be the best rush end in cfl right now. and like 24 or 25 years old.

Can he play Quarterback? If not, then Jonesy with all his evaluation camps should be able to find a bunch just like him.

Riders don't sign #5 if they caved and signed #4 to what he wanted

how many cfl alstar awards does he have
that would be "0"
does not matter who jone signs - unless the riders have a starting cfl grade qb and a good back up and there is none available in the cfl - well the riders should lose all their games this year.

Durant got what he wanted in Montreal.. which was a similar dollar amount to what he was offered here (if the reports are accurate)... he just got guaranteed money, a huge signing bonus, and gets his money whether he plays well in MTL or not (or gets injured or not). Durant's signing would have no impact on money available to sign free agents... although, now that he's gone, it might?!?!

Well don't pay decent or big on a qb and see what kind of Qb that gets you....oh I forgot you should already know due to the great qb depth you guys have right now...pretty much 0. The Denver Broncos proved how important a Qb is this year...a superbowl talented team left with rookie qb's and didn't make playoffs...right now the riders have a worst team in the league record with a decent qb to a rookie? Should make it fun to watch haha.

If the Riders sign #4 they don't sign #5 or anybody else.

Funny how every wants Riders to improve but aren't willing to do what it takes to improve. Whether you think Jones was right or wrong it is true the team has been crappy with Durant. So if he isn't willing to take a pay cut so team can add players how will they ever improve.

I'm excited for what's shaping up!

Wish I could up vote Christopher Evans comment.

You're assuming Durant plays the entire season. If that had happened, then you're right, the dollars would have been different. The "guaranteed cash" vs. "incentives" on the contract are not minor differences (obviously, as they turned out to be the deal-breaker for both Jones and Durant).

It is pretty clear Chris Jones is looking to find and develop the next generation quarterback for the Riders. This would require whatever young pivot he signs to have some pretty significant playing time. Even if healthy, Durant would have to split his time on the field with the young guns.

Regina's contract offer would reflect that reality. You don't pay a quarterback guaranteed cash to sit on the bench.

Durant showed his true colours in his interview. He's a big whiner who is all about himself.

The Riders were banking on him to carry the load while the defense gel'd and he couldn't put points on the board.

When the defense gel'd he still couldn't put enough points on the board (other than against TO who wasnt highs school calibre).

Durant is no better than Jones. The only year he threw for over 5000 yards he threw his OC under the bus after he got fired because he didn't like the play calls.

The last of the entitled players brought in during the Shivers era and we're coddled in the Miller era are finally gone!

This is the first significant signing of this off-season.

D-line is about #3 in priority this year behind O-line and QB.

Jones fan, NOT

Tired of the Durant talk. He's yesterday's news. Move on people. If you have that much of a man crush then by all means, cheer for the Als.

I'm just glad that all the will he or won't he is over, we now have Willie!

Anonymous said...

I will Dave, I will and I'll buy as many tickets to Allouette games as I do to Rider games. Zilch.

Good signing, but he's not a quarterback, durant will burn him.

Anonymous said...

who?

Anonymous said...

Of course they had crappy seasons, Durant had 2 flukes injuries but I can tell that he's back, with a good team behind him I wouldn't be surprised if they go to the cup this year

There is certainly a need to sign good defensive players because , with no starting QB, the defence will certainly be out on the field for the majority of the game. Good luck with that. The worst defence in the league in 2016 will need all the help they can get.

Anonymous said...

why yes he can, he's a football player.

Anonymous said...

Great signing. Jones seems big on the "defense wins championships" philosophy. I sure hope that defense can also score touchdowns...

Anonymous said...

Dont evn try to compare the last place riders to a defending superbowl champ coming into the year last it,lay off the kool aide

Anonymous said...

This is a huge signing! Well done, team!

Anonymous said...

Wrong. Just plain wrong.

Anonymous said...

Wrong. The team has been crappy WITHOUT him, while he was injured in 14/15. 2016 is on Jones, not Durant.

Anonymous said...

Ill tell you this, I am as die hard a rider fan as they come. But, I feel no connection to this version of the Riders. And see right through Jones BS. Until he puts something on the field I feel is worth cheering for, Ill be pulling for DD to do well in MTL and I think, that may even apply to when they play the Riders. Ill feel that out on Gameday - wearing my #4 Rider jersey.

Cant wait for Willie to make mincemeat out of Durant. OOps sorry, not supposed to talk about Darian any more......

Anonymous said...

Darian? He won't even last two games before season ending injury.

It's pretty sad when the 'face of the franchise' has played five games for them.
