THURSDAY RODSERVATIONS

Our Palace Awaits
15 ONE-TIMERS

1 - It appears Thursday will be the coldest day of the year.  It's what everybody's talking about around here.

What shocks me is I've been through 43 Saskatchewan winters (one in Alberta) and people continue to be surprised at how cold it is and how bad the roads are.  Are Saskies expecting one of these winters to be totally different?  Tropical like Mexico?

Grin and Danny "Bare-It"!

2 - Wednesday's news that Jonathon Newsome has re-signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders is the type of "good news" stuff that the club can use right now.  But the veteran defensive end dropped another nugget on the SportsCage Wednesday when he said - as far as he knows - teammate Willie Jefferson plans to re-sign with the Riders as well.

Speaking from balmy Indiana, Newsome said he spoke with Jefferson that morning and Willie said his intention is to come to terms with the Green & White.

Jefferson is part of the "Big 3" players on defense that the Riders need to sign, including linebackers Jeff Knox Jr. and Otha Foster.

3 - Darian Durant is in another stratosphere as far as the importance of him re-signing with the club goes, and dare I say it's the #1 story in the CFL right now.  Scruffy was on the SportsCage from Edmonton on Wednesday and he said a Rider fan stopped him in downtown Edmonton asking, "Is today the day we sign Darian?"

That notion caught me off-guard, but it shouldn't have because I get the same question almost daily.  However that's not how I envision this scenario unfolding.  (i.e. the Riders calling a last-minute news conference and catching us all by surprise with the good news).

No, I suspect that whether Durant signs with the club or not, the news will have been leaked well ahead of time by one side or the other.  The ultimate news conference could be anti-climactic.

4 - Who the hell does Meryl Streep think she is?

5 - Of the Top 10 most-read stories on the website 3DownNation.com in 2016, FIVE of them included the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  If that isn't proof enough that the Riders are what pulls the CFL wagon then I don't know what is.  The other teams and head office need to quit fighting it.

6 - Would the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released quarterback Kevin Glenn last Friday if they didn't think starter Matt Nichols would be back?  To me, that's doubtful.  However if Nichols doesn't re-sign with Winnipeg, are the Blue Bombers contenders in 2017?  That's also doubtful.

7 - Twice now I've heard Kevin Glenn's named linked to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, at the very least as an insurance policy in the event that Durant isn't back.  How would that go over in the 306?

8 - The Leader Post's Rob Vanstone penned a masterpiece of a feature on old Exhibition Stadium, the former home of the Regina Pats, which is scheduled for demolition in the not-too-distant future.  Some local sporting types have winced that the aged arena hasn't received the hullabaloo that Taylor Field enjoyed across the street in 2016.

But it's hardly a surprise.  That Pats have toiled in virtual obscurity in this town for much of their 99 seasons and even the recent heroics of John Paddock have gone unnoticed up until the past month.

However that's about to change over the next year or so.  After having meetings with the Queen City Sports & Entertainment Group - the new owners of the Pats - over the past while, I can tell you that their plans for the franchise are literally mind-blowing.  My jaw dropped on the floor as some of the strategy was laid out in front of me.

It's true.  The Pats' future is so bright that Regina needs to wear shades.  In fact, all of Saskatchewan will if these plans come to fruition and I have no reason to think that they won't.

9 - The rumours of the sale of the Saskatoon Blades are getting more juicy and delicious by the day.  Remember, I still have the Twitter Direct Message strongly denying that a sale will take place.  It may come in handy!

10 - STANLEY CUPS: Maurice Richard (8), Alex Ovechkin (0).

11 - I'm taking the same supplement that Brock Lesnar does.  However somehow, I don't look like Brock Lesnar.

12 - LOVED the retro jerseys worn by the Winnipeg Jets in their 2-0 win over Calgary on Monday night.  It made me want to go out and buy one.  Errrrr, wait a minute.  No it didn't.

13 - The Regina Pats were once again named the #1 team in the Canadian Hockey League on Wednesday.  Out of 16 weeks, they've been nationally-ranked 15 times.  I'd love to know how many weeks they've been at #1.

As an aside, read this work-of-art by the Prince George Citizen on the state of the WHL in Prince George.  "Some hockey town". http://www.princegeorgecitizen.com/opinion/editorial/the-city-that-forgot-hockey-1.7101859

14 - I loathe the fact that I need to start getting in shape for Roughriders minicamp in Florida.  #pushups. Last June during training camp in Saskatoon, I shot back to the players that I'm a broadcaster in my 40's, not a finely-tuned professional athlete.  Defensive end Shawn Lemon shrugged and yelled, "Shut-up and get down there."  I did.

15 - Join us for a Cowboys Nation SportsCage/RodPedersen.com Watch Party Sunday at 3:40 pm at the Four Seasons Sports Palace to watch Dallas take down Green Bay in the NFL Playoffs.  The bash is for us Cowboy fans (including Luc Mullinder, Derek Meyers, Sharky, myself, etc.) but even Packers fans will be welcomed.  We'll have giving away SportsCage hats and SportsCage licensed footballs and having a grand old time.

After last week's successful event at Boston Pizza Emerald Park, local sports bars and restaurants (and even some in Saskatoon) have been clamouring to host one of these events.  However the condition is that you have to be a SportsCage sponsor.  That includes the Four Seasons, Canadian Brewhouse, all Regina-area Boston Pizzas, etc.

See you Sunday!

Hmmm... Meryl Streep. Isn't she the woman who stripped the bark off Trump?

#4... Who the hell does Rod Pedersen think he is ?
# 10... Alex Ovechkin couldn't even tie Rocket Richards Skates.
# 13..We have to read this every week on here ?

Meryl Streep knows exactly who she is and also knows who Donald Trump is!

For being awarded a life time achievement award, Meryl Streep can use the platform however she wants.

She is under the false assumption anybody cares what she thinks or her opinions. The people have spoken...get over it your horse lost the race.

Here comments about MMA were grossly ill-informed and an insult to the thousands who work in the industry.

Come on Rod, you go to Gold's Gym all the time and you're not in shape? What do you do there, casually pedal the bike while staring at all the scenery around? I guess they don't call you "the fireman" for nothing.

Perhaps in Saskatoon they see the success the Pats and even the Rush are having in attracting fans and they want that for the Blades as well. They've got the business connections to make things happen so it wouldn't be surprising if they make Mike Priestner an offer he can't refuse.

Hear! Hear! Roddy, Agree 100% with you on Meryl. What a slap in the face to MMA and football fans. Also the left get over it! I am so sick of their crying. Take New York and L.A votes out of the equation for both candidates and the Donald wins by 3 million votes. So yes the majority has spoken who they want for President. Move on and give the man a chance. Also I hope the Blades do sell was never a fan of the new owner there was something I don't like about him and his boy! I have not been to a game since they sold. The Pats success will do nothing by great things for junior hockey in this province and put it back on the map again. Here's hoping we are talking junior hockey for a Sask team come May.

Because Ovechkin doesn't have any cups means he is a bad hockey player...what a load of crap, he is very talented but surely would say the Rocket is above him but that is my opinion. Anyone that says Ovechkin isn't very good because of 0 cups means the riders have had very few good players also due to 4 cups in over 100 years...makes no sense what so ever.

Yep the same one that gave a standing ovation to a convicted peadophile (Roman Polanski)

Anonymous said...

Aw come on Rod, don't pretend like you don't want to look like that referee in the college football national championship. Holy smokes those guns were huge.

Anonymous said...

That's okay Rod I dont think Ovechkin needs the respect of a guy who essentially writes a sports gossip column. Very fortunate your the only game in town. Arguing with an idiot is like wrestling with a pig you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it.

City of Regina poorly designed stadium build sits empty deteriorating in the harsh Sk. weather elements, too bad no roof. What a shame, what a waste, part time venue generating nary a penny of revenue onto long term deficit.

Rocket played when there were 6 teams, the odds for ovechkin to win 1 Stanley cup are less than the rocket winning 8.

It's a sad state of the world that people care more about what famous people think, say or do than thinking for themselves and focusing on their own life. It's wrong for the media to put them on a pedestal and give these self absorbed individuals a platform to try and tell us how we should think.

Riders aren't signing Durant before Feb. 15

Loved your show yesterday Roddy, always love the Roughriders talk but also happy to hear you touch on curling and in particular the 2017 Continental Cup which is being held once again in Las Vegas, NV.

Thought you would be interested to know that in addition to Benny Hebert there is a few Saskatchewan connections to this event including Braeden Moscowy who along with Hebert will be playing on team North America. I have been told Moscowy still resides in Regina but plays on # 2 ranked team in the world....the Reid Carruthers team from Winnipeg, MB as teams are now allowed one import.

Are you REALLY saying that you think Trump will be a good president? How long before he crashes and burns? He's a buffoon!

Who's roman polanski (sports figure?) actually, who cares.

Anonymous said...

Are you hinting that the QCSEG is buying the Blades, or perhaps another club? New arena in Regina part of that strategy too? A lot of money in that group so I could see these things happening, and wouldn't mind seeing the greedy Evraz Place group getting set straight. All these sell outs they must be rolling in it, all thanks to the QCSEG and John Paddock.

Loving what the Pats did at the deadline. Tough to see a great kid and player like Zablocki go but as JP said, that is the price of doing business. Mahura is an top tier d-man at 18 and de Wit will replace some of the grit lost with Smith/Cole/Zablocki. Both guys with Memorial Cup experience as well.

Looking forward to the second half. Get your tickets now folks.

ya this coming from a woman who lives in the land of "make-believe"! she's probably never done an ounce of hard labour in her life besides exercising her mouth!..and for the rocket's cups, did he compete vs 30 teams? ....skewed stats!

Anonymous said...

The MMA? That's your issue? Another insignificant "sport". Really? Rod, you're better than that.

Anonymous said...

lay off the pipe bud. It took the rocket 18 seasons to get 544 goals compared to 12 that it took Ovechkin and goalies are far better these then back in the 50's.

Streep = who cares
Like everyone says, just get over it and deal with it (like we are with OUR own buffoon!) make sure you vote him out next time if he doesn't do a good job.

Pats = there really are some a-holes in this town that just keep chirping the pats ownership and roddy himself! how about taking a look at yourself and just try, TRY and have a happier 2017, like seriously get over yourself and just enjoy the show instead of being so negative.

Stanley Cups - not even comparable. back then if you just woke up you could win a cup, now its a grind and odds are way different.

Cowboys Nation - ??? really..there can't be THAT many in this city, I know 2 of them.

Supplements - what do you expect? hahaha, that guy eats probably 6000 calories minimum a day...your taking supplements and dieting. it doesn't take a personal trainer to tell you, but the results will not be the same! hahaha

Durant - if we don't sign him, we are done. unless there is some QB gem in the mine that we don't know about.

Spelling - at least 5 people will be raging before they read this line about Trudeau, Trump and Streep and will have posted a troll post!

Trump has already done more for the US economy than Obama has.

yawn... wake me when durant goes away and the Mr. Jones/Murphy 2017 sign a durable dependable qb with a capable back-up surrounded by recruited world elite teammates, were on our way and getting close. Can you feel it? Rider pride is back again. That's how you win championship titles consistently don't you know? rebuilding the foundation of the team. yawn ... well... back to bed, it's a tad chilly, not too bad. Saskatchewan Tough!

Sincerly,
wee Willy

Anyone know what happened to all the old pictures in the lobby at the old exhibition stadium? I hope they are stored somewhere and not just thrown out.

Anonymous said...

Swift Current 57's ??? I know there has been a team there for 57 years but so what. There is also is a term of "Heinz 57" which is used to describe many different types or varieties.
Surely they could have come up with a better name more suited to the area or the City of Swift Current.

Anonymous said...

So the Chargers are going to move into a stadium with less than the capacity of the Riders stadium? That doesn't make sense, even if its only temporary. Why not play in the Rose Bowl or something?

Anonymous said...

Kevin Glenn was a free agent in February. Don't over think it. He's a 36 year old back up QB. If he's not good enough for the lowly Riders to take why would the Bombers be any different in hanging on to him.

I do agree though that Nicholls will re-sign. If Winnipeg is smart they will be using DD as bargaining chip. The longer Nicholls waits the more of an option Durant becomes and my guess is he would go to Winnipeg before Montreal.

"That's the most sickest fakest rumour ever rod. So fake and phoney. Quit being a big meany. I'm telling my daddy and you aren't allowed to buy a car from us either so na na nannana!" - Colin Priestner direct message to rod.

Anonymous said...

So all the Seahawk fans are now Cowboy fans. Flavour of the day. Wish people would just pick a team and stick with it win or lose.

Anonymous said...

I hope (wish) you were right on the sale of the Blades, but you are probably just trying to stir the pot (and you do that so well :) ).

Durant best bet signing bbs the peg. World class stadium, management, team set to succeed very soon.

Here is hoping the Cowboys lose big time. It is one of the two teams in sports I don't like - Yankees and Cowboys.

The photo at the top of the new stadium makes one think how it would be perfect for a first WHL Winter Classic game. Regina Pats vs. Moosejaw should draw a few thousand.

Meryl Streep who cares about what these Hollywood nut cases have to say
Given a chance Trump will make America great again! Can't say the same about our situation here in Canada.
Hockey has changed so much that there is no way to compare old and new.
Sure hope the Riders sign Jefferson, IMHO he is the key to our defense.
Really sad to hear the poor fan support in Prince George, that is a really good team!

Anonymous said...

Meryl is right about Trump.........Heck, here in Canada, we have a PM who's a politician very busy trying to be a rock star, and in the US, they will have a TV reality star very busy trying to be a politician.

George Porge said...

"Take New York and L.A votes out of the equation for both candidates and the Donald wins by 3 million votes."

So in other words, Donald Trump's presidency is legitimate, as long as you ignore the votes in the two largest population centers in the country.

Yeah, okay. Your argument is not the least bit tenuous.

Hi Rod!

Announced attendance at the last Blades game was 2,600. Yikes!!!

If this continues, the current Blades ownership group might be re-thinking things...

I hope the Blades get sold. Don't like the idea of an owner buying the team and letting his son run the club. Didn't work all that well in Regina with the Parkers and it's going worse in Saskatoon with the Priestners.

I had a look at the recent coins issued for 2017 by the Royal Canadian Mint being sold at the post office wicket. The highlight is a $25 pure silver coin which is football shaped and curved with the laces and stripes on one side and the Queen on the other - basically a silver Canadian football (without any logo). They minted 8,500 of these coins. It would be a perfect birthday gift for someone who loves football. Of the many beautiful coins that they produce, this one stands out. It is however one of their more expensive coins at $162.

The billionaires are moving into more complete control and running the whole show below our border, and one of their most recent classic arrogant moves is by the Charger's owner to tell Charger fans "F You were moving to LA"

Thank You Rod! I was thinking the same thing about old meryl....I find it amazing that these "artistic" people like actors preach tolerance and inclusion...as long as you agree with their view on things, if not your not smart enough to have your views be valid. They really just act like bullies.

Anonymous said...

Huh? How gullible and easily led. Just because they read a story on Louis Philippe Ladoucour a Canadian who has played 12 years now in obscurity for Dallas they are now all Cowboys fans.

Anonymous said...

Streep was speaking out against Trump for mocking a disabled person. Your support of Trump disgusts many. Talk to the black players on the Riders, see how far you get. Smh

I would not mind Glenn. It could be a lot worse while envisioning another year without the cup (let's get real folks). He's the same stop-gap in the Franklin scenario and who knows? Maybe we'll get a couple more Tim Hortons! I'm thinking that WAS KG's plan in 2015.

No better way to celebrate the Pat's 100th year than an outdoor game in the new stadium. Regina tax payers are chipping in some real dough to build the beast, so hockey fans should get an opportunity to enjoy a WHL game at the new stadium for a Pat's vs Warriors game and birthday party in December 2017.
